Flint Hills falls flat

Pros:
1) Small, easy to navigate, well manicured short course on the Flint Hills Community College campus. There is ample parking, located right next to downtown Emporia, and the course is hardly ever crowded.
2) In typical Dynamic Discs fashion this course has excellent large 5' x 12' textured tee pads, relatively new but in great condition Recruit baskets, full color tee signs with hole map and OB rules, and a nice course Kiosk sign with multiple layouts and all relevant information.
3) Very easy to see where the next tee pad is from the previous basket making navigation intuitive.
4) Very beginner friendly with short to medium length distances, mostly flat landscape with a few spots of OB (mostly paved areas). There is a chance to throw one onto the highway on the back side of the course if you hook shank one, but otherwise very minimal risk of losing a disc here.
5) Small bit of elevation come into play on holes 3 and 7 that do provide a small challenge and potential roll aways, but for the most part the course is flat and devoid of anything really challenging.
6) I believe only two holes were over 300 feet (Holes 3 and 8) and most were in a comfortable 250 foot range. Great for lower skilled players.
7) Tons of Ace Runs on this course (I aced Hole #1 right off the bat first shot with a Harp) with very little in the way of punishment for going for the ace and missing.
8) Sets the bar high for "school" style 9 hole courses with the top tier equipment and maintenance. And I'm certain this is an amazing stop for Glow events.
9) A stones throw from the line of Hotels on the main strip and very close to travel staples like Wal-Mart, I-Hop, and Applebees.
10) Quick warm up course for those staying in the hotels when in Emporia before heading out to face what else Emporia has to offer

Cons:
1) Very little in the way of trees or obstacles to defend itself. It doesn't really force any lines outside of maybe holes 1 and 5, but they are subtle at best. You can pretty much play hyzer golf the rest of the round.
2) Holes 3 and 8 border a pretty busy road and though unlikely, you can toss one into traffic. Hole 5 borders above I-35 with only a fence protecting it. Though unlikely, you can shank one over the fence and probably not get the disc back.
3) Multiple bland uninteresting holes with no real signature hole that stands out or is memorable.
4) Though a great warm up course and a wonderful course for lower skilled players just starting out, this is an easy pass unless you are pressed for time, need to warm up to play Jones of CC, or just want to bag this course as played.
5) My first experience here was negative (so I went back and played it later to give it a fair shake). We signed up for a DDO side event called Flint Hills Under the Lights (where it was supposed to be a bunch of portable lights lighting the course and you play a rated round at night). Instead There was only the street lights, we weren't allowed glow discs (because it was considered an advantage) and we literally played 18 holes in the pitch black of night with only the ambient city lights to help and a few flash lights. No disrespect or ill will at all to the vendor hosting the event, the company they rented the lights from failed to deliver them and they couldn't find replacements quick enough. They offered to cancel and refund everyone's money but most of us stayed and played anyways for the experience. It was terrible, but memorable. lol The course is only slightly better in the day light.

Other Thoughts:
Quick round warm up course in my book. You won't be missing anything if you skip this course on your trip through Emporia. If college is in session you may have difficulty finding parking and there are no bathroom facilities (outside of the school) available. (We just used the gas station a block away). More courses, especially with all the right amenities, for all skill level is wonderful. This course does what it is intended to do and does it at Dynamic Discs professional look and quality level, even if it is meant for newbies. A welcome addition to the best little disc golf city in the US.
