Nice Open & Rolling ,,,,Park Style 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 14, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Floral City Park is your normal park style disc golf course . Or is it ? The park has ample parking space , and a bathroom near hole 1 ( or 9 ) . There is a picnic shelter area also near the lot . There are 2 large cement tee pads per hole that are painted in the back of them , blue for pro and red for ams . The signage is basic , with small metal signs that give the hole number , par and distance . The baskets are basic Chainstars , but seem to catch well . There are also color coded NEXT TEE signs hanging on the bottoms of the buckets . A nice touch . I didn't see a kiosk here ,but with the signage on the baskets , it is a very easy course to navigate . The park was mowed and seems to be well cared for . Besides disc golfers , the park is shared with joggers and dog walkers . This 19 hole course has some length to some of its holes . Disc Risk : About zero , unless one comes out of your hand in the back of the park , goes over the fence and gets squished by an oncoming car . The park is so clean and free of rough that you can play all the way up til dark . Also , , holes 9 and 18 end near the parking lot , so you can play a quick front or back 10 if you are pressed for time . The park lacks a lot of trees , but of the ones here , many are the large oaks with the Spanish moss hanging from them . Course designers here utilized the trees to whatever advantage they could . The course face page said " rolling " which normally means flat outside of Florida , but this course actually has some elevation to it . The course is still easy on your legs , because of the care of the park . These holes won't remain etched in your memory forever , but there were some pretty decent ones . #1 is a good starter hole , a 284' right to left drive that goes between 2 large oaks in the beginning . #6 is a long 573' par 4 ( 414' from the reds ) with a dip in the middle of the fairway . 7 is 318' , goes across a maintenacne road and through or over a fence to the green , which sits under a canopy of trees . 8 is 458' from the longs , goes slightly downhill , with trees protecting the fairway and basket on the left . One I liked was #12a , 320' where you had to bend your drive around some plants and a few trees to a semi protected basket . Signature Hole : #16 , 594' ( 437' from the reds ) with an elevated tee , into a wide but canopied tunnel of large oaks , to the basket out on the other end . Not a fast play , it took me just over an hour to play , but since it is so open , a group of 4 should be able to finish in 2 . An enjoyable round , it was nice to open a few drives up .

Cons:

#1 Challenge . Some will think that the holes run on with straight hard drives to the basket with little or avoidable obstruction . I don't think that the course design had championship style holes in mind . However , they still hold local tournaments here . I met the young guy that won the last one . He was throwing with his father , and easily drove 400' + , and likes the course . #2 Safety . You don't need to keep your head on a swivel , but you do need to be aware of an errant throw from a newbie that might cross a fairway here and there . Also , since there is a walking path that cuts right through and around the park , you need to be aware of walkers with dogs , or kids on bikes , etc. Wind might be a factor here . You might be confused on hole 12(s). There is a 12 , then a 12A . When they added a 19th hole , instead of rearranging the holes with new numbered signs , they frugally just added the hole in the back with 12A . Bring sunscreen . The sun can be brutal .

Other Thoughts:

This is the kind of park that I learned how to play disc golf . Rolling and open . A perfect compliment to Whispering Pines , or if you hated that course , then you will love it here . A great place to buy a to go meal in town , then eat at the park shelter before playing . It just seemed so calm here . Shot variety ? Not as much as you will see other places , but being rough free , you are playing the game of disc golf instead of playing the game of finding your disc . My Recommendation : Even though the better players might become bored , this course can serve them as far as driving , approach and putting . It is also fun enough for the newbie , the family ( there are also many other things to do in this park ) , locals , casuals , and travelers . Perfect for a Course Challenge or Trilogy Tournament . Even a Night Glow Tournament . Play It !!

Floral Park DGC Has Some Uncommon In Florida Elevation! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 1, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Floral Park would be considered flat as a pancake in Colorado or New Hampshire but it's minimal elevation is a treat nice after all the Elevation always challenged Florida courses that I've played over the past three weeks. The park is a large sprawling county park with all the usual county park amenities such as BB courts, picnic shelters, tennis courts, skateboard park and a wonderful slightly hilly walking path that meanders throughout the park. It's roll makes for a delightful bicycling circuit as I watched one family racing around the path. One does have to be a little cautious and watch for someone flying over a hill.

The course's hilly nature, scattered trees and mostly open fairways make for a very pleasant golfing experience. It's not overly long nor is it overly challenging. From the longer Blues, many of the holes play around 300' while the shorter Reds are more in the 200' range. # 16 plays longer at 594-437'. It's just a very enjoyable recreationally course.

The amenities here are solid. The concrete pads are nicely long, level and both are clearly marked with either the blue or red paint. The signs are simple green metals ones which show the par, distance and hole #. Hanging on the Discatcher baskets are next tee arrows in either Red or Blue. As always, they save you a lot of steps.

I don't think there was any one signature hole here. There were a few where you got to throw down a gentle slope, a couple of tunnel shots and few where trees served as obstacles.

Cons:

Not many Cons but I promise to try and dream up a couple.

Why in the world in the middle of a perfectly good disc golf course would you suddenly have two holes in row called # 12? It it just a sick joke inserted here to confuse and bewilder players? When arriving at the second # 12 hole in a row, how many players walk back to the previous basket to check it's number?

You have to be ever alert when throwing here due to what come flying over the hilly walking path.

Definitely recreational distances.

Mostly recreational challenges.

I drove into four separate park entrances trying to locate the first tee.

Highway is on your left the entire length of the course's longest hole, # 16. @ poorly thrown shot could hyser into the traffic.

Other Thoughts:

Mainly, this is a most comfortable round. It doesn't place any undo pressure on the player. There are no scary water carries, almost no chance hunting for your disc and even less chance of actually of losing a disc. There is no underbrush and only one fence to even consider.

So you have a lovely county park with a little elevation, little to no chance to losing your discs and lots of open spaces to throw in. It's possibly a dream course for some players. Others, might it a little boring or lacking in challenge. It was a tad too open for my tastes but I enjoyed my round here, none the less.

Long and Long and...did I say Long? 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 18, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

First I want to say that this course is in a beautiful park, with tons to offer for the non-golfer. So you really have to watch out for walkers. As for the golf, in my humble opinion, for the short-arm throwers, it's not the best.

If you like throwing really long, mostly low shots, this is the course for you! If you like dodging Spanish moss and not having a ton of variety, this, again, is the course for you!

Now there are a few nice aspects of this course. The tee pads are fantastic - wide and long. The trees are gorgeous - nice old oaks with swinging beards of Spanish moss. There's also a nice pavilion and playground for the little ones. And its soooo easy to navigate that Stevie Wonder could do it blindfolded!

But as for variety, it ain't got a whole lot. It's either a long anhyzer shot around an oak tree, or a long hyzer shot around an oak tree. Some of the shots are long hyzer/anhyzer shots up hill, and some are long down hill hyzer/anhyzer shots. Sigh. But it is a big, wide open park with tree interspersed through out. There is some decent elevation and a couple of cool down hill-slope shots. But for the most part it's a 2-3 disc course - putter, stable driver, stable fairway/mid-range driver.

One of the plusses of the course is the wind...and today there was puh-lenty. So it was an excellent test of you full power wind shots. And since there is -0- brush, it didn't matter where you ended up, you had an angle back to the basket.

Cons:

Lack of variety...just not much you can do with a wide open piece of property.

Other Thoughts:

If you need a place to practice the art of gripping-and-ripping, you've found your home.

Decent 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 20, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Navigation and flow are splendid and be prepared to grip and rip. Signage is perfect, tees are well pronounced, and 9 and 18 land you in the same area if you need a bathroom break or a quick rest.
Very friendly people playing in the park; always a plus

Cons:

The only true challenge stated by other reviewers are the low ceilings

Other Thoughts:

Great course for beginners and others to work on shot making .First timerswill never have issues with course navigation

Didn't Disappoint 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 28, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Concrete Tee Pads. Holes are marked well, for the most part. Not crowded. good use of the sparse amount of trees in the park. Short course from either set of pads which made it easy to get multiple rounds in from both pads. Good facilities at the park; restroom, picnic area, play areas, walking trail. Good place to take the family and turn them loose if you wanna get a few rounds in.

Cons:

Confusing to navigate the holes between 9-16. Better placed directional signs would help, or the print out of the course made available at the Pavillion near hole 1. Not much variety when it comes to scenery, or varied shot selection. Found myself throughing the same disc on a majority of holes even after playing multiple times from the different pads

Other Thoughts:

It's a typical course set up in a local park. Very slight change in elevation for the most part. Most holes are ace-runable with the exception of the 2 bombers.

Was worth the 1hr drive I had to make while visiting parents in The Villiages.

open yet technical 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 8, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is a great grip'm and rip'm course seeing as its a wide open municipal park with mature trees with plenty on spanish moss. The low hanging spanish moss comes into play on many holes which will make you keep it low and fast to accomplish the distance you need.

Cons:

nothing really showing where the next hole starts but not much of a con if u know how to open your eyes and look around

Other Thoughts:

this is a really nice course to play at to get in a fun round if your on vacation in the area. i liked this course for its beautiful landscape, technical nature and freindly locals. met up on the back nine with one of the locals who had given me and my brother the low-down on each hole.... thanks for the fun round Bill!!

Florida Fun at Floral Park 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 19, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Upkeep, appearance, hills

Other Thoughts:

Floral Park is a well maintained, well laid out city park style course, but oddly, in a mostly rural region of Florida's Gulf Coast. This mostly open course features concrete teepads, good signage, some excellent trees, a couple of longer than average holes, and unlike most Central Florida courses, a legitimate bit of elevation to enhance your round.

Country roads lead to Floral Park no matter which way you come, yet when you arrive you'll see it's a classic municipal park, with bathrooms, a ball field, walking trail, and other typical amenities, so a bit of a disconnect, but in a good way. The course starts off right next to the parking lot with a good sign and a nice concrete teepad. It has two tees, and typical of the other Florida courses I've played, regular and beginner might be a better way to think of the choices than pro and am. The course maintains the personality it sets on hole #1 throughout in terms of tees and signage, and straightforward and mostly open holes but with enough live oaks (some of which are truly impressive) and other trees to make you think. Most holes are in the usual 250 to 400 foot range, but there are a couple legitimate par 4s out here, from the long tees at least. Disc loss is not a concern on this course; there's no water, and none of the palmetto stands that sometimes make Florida disc golf a special challenge. Unlike any of the other courses I've played in Florida, there are some little hills on this course, and this is one place in Central Florida where you can get at least a taste of a bona fide downhill chuck, and an uphill grind. Wayfinding is also not too tough, but painting the basket rungs to indicate which way to the next tee would make wayfinding much easier.

Overall, Floral Park is one of those courses that is just a nice experience throughout, and leaves you with a spring in your step. A bit lacking in terms of length and varied challenges, but above average in terms of tees, signage, upkeep, overall appearance, and that intangible relaxed Florida sunshine vibe. Overall, a Good course, and worthy of a roadtrip if you're anywhere nearby.

Pros:

Ease of finding course : 4
Fun factor : 4 All in all a fun couse. I really liked the Pro and AM tee pads for most of the holes.
Beginner friendly : 4
Lost disc recovery : 5

Cons:

Layout : 2 From many of the tee pads it was difficult to determine which pin to shoot at.
Ease of finding next hole : 2 This course was difficult to navigate
Terrain management : 2 They really should cut the grass more and several areas were just flood ponds

Other Thoughts:

Pin and tee box quality : 3 This course would greatly inprove if the pins had the hole number clearly marked on the top of them.

nice city park 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 25, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice traditional city park course meandering through live oaks with lots of Spanish moss. No schule whatsoever. Decent elevation change for Florida- course designers have made good use of available obstacles/terrain. 2 legit par 4 holes, no tweener holes. Excellent place for a beginner to learn the game or for an advanced player to hone their shots.

Other Thoughts:

Signage was a little off but that was due to recent addition of concrete pads according to a local. I would expect this to have been rectified by now. Low ceilings galore.

Worth the trip 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 8, 2006 Played the course:once

Pros:

Attractive park with old growth trees. Virtually no schule. Easy to navigate. Two sets of tees. Friendly to both beginners and advanced players. Course flows well with other park users.

The course gives lots of opportunities to air shots out and offers many roller opportunities to those that enjoy taking the low route.

There is a bit to think about with the sidewalk OB coming into play on many shots and low ceilings have been incorporated as much as possible to add more technical challenge to a mostly open property.

The course gets a good turnout for local handicaps and is very visible to the adjacent main road, giving the sport lots of exposure in the area. It's only ten minutes from the new Belle Park course and the Sun King Disc Sports store.

Cons:

The course could be more technically challenging. It tends to favor big arms a bit too much.

There's not a lot of shade.
