Pros:

Outstanding pro quality course. Just like playing on one of the best ball gold courses. Long but FAIR fairways, challenging your game at every level. A must play course for all. The accomodations were high class and comfortable. Our hosts treated us like long lost friends. I can't say enough, they went out of their way to make us feel at home. I will return as soon and as often as I can.

Cons:

I have tried hard to come up with something to qualify as a "Con" but there is really nothing I can come up with that would'nt me meaningless.

Other Thoughts:

This course is a labor on love and I was honored to be allowed to share it with Kelly and his parents, Thanks Kelly!

Nothing But Smiles. 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Everything. There is nothing about this course that I didn't like. The hospitality was second to none. The course was in great shape. Lots of great details. Great signage. Lots of challenges, lots of variety in shots and holes. Kelly is the most gracious and awesome host and playing partner. I brought along three newbies, and he encouraged them and gave them advice the whole time, never once getting impatient. I, myself, had two birdies and lots of pars on the day, including a sweet shot over the lake on #3 I will never forget. This course is simply the best I've ever played, hands down. I will be back.

Cons:

Too far for me to play more? It's a beast when it's almost 100 degrees?

Other Thoughts:

The hospitality from Kelly, his parents was amazing to see. You just don't see this kind of thing. His mom made us lunch, and his dad gave us tomatoes to take home. Just amazing. And the course? It is THE BEST.

Simply the Best 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 14, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

When I woke up Friday morning and headed out for Orlando, the first thing I began thinking about was what was wrong with the experience. So I thought... and I thought... and I thought. The honest answer is that I could have kept thinking and I still would not have come up with a negative.
So I immediately switched my thinking to what was right about the course: everything. From the incredible hospitality that you experience as soon as you step out of the car (and subsequently until you leave the next morning) to the incredible course design, there is nothing that this course doesn't lack.

Strangely enough, all of this considered, I am speechless, unable to articulate the impact that this experience had on me. Luckily, I really don't need to review it. Everything I would say has been said. In fact, my experience was VERY similar to gcrussell (I played the course the following day and Kelly was still tired from his flight.)

So en lieu of rewriting what he said, I will just make a few notes of my fondest memories.

+Hole 3 is quite simply the most beautiful golf hole I have ever played. Emphasis on GOLF (Ball or Disc--I have played both). It's 780 feet, tall, mature trees line the beautiful grass fairway for 400'. After that 400', you have another 80' to the lake. When you get to the lake, you still have a 300' to a narrow peninsula.
+The bed & breakfast is so awesome. I had never stayed in a bnb, and was expecting floral quilts, squeaky beds and out of touch hosts. Quite the opposite. In fact, if my wife ever gets sick of all my discing and throws me out, this is what I am modelling my bachelor pad after!
+The dogs. I love dogs. They are the best people. The Flydogs were no exception.

Other Thoughts:

If you love disc golf, and really want the experience of what disc golf is, I urge you to play this course. In fact, make a night or two of it. The bed & breakfast would be good for a group of guys to come down and make a weekend of it.

YOU MUST PLAY THIS COURSE!!!!!!

Man Crush 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 13, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

I've been pretty lucky in the few years that I have been able to play disc golf. I have family on both sides of the country and I live in the middle. This has meant plenty of great road trips getting to see and play some of the country's finest courses our sport has to offer. Last summer I took the ultimate road trip playing 21 rounds on 17 courses in 11 days. I got to play Flip City, Idlewild, Kensington Toboggan, Holler in the Hills, and several others. I thought I had reached my personal disc golf mecca. I was wrong.

Earlier this week I got to see the Flyboy course for the first time. I was in the Atlanta area visiting in-laws and I emailed Kelly to see if it would be possible for me to come by. This leads us to:

Reason No. 1 you need to play this course: The hospitality.

Kelly emailed back a few hours later to say that he would be glad to have me if I didn't mind him being a little tired when we played our round. He invited me to the course to have some lunch around noon because that would be the earliest he could get there since he WAS FLYING IN FROM DUBAI. It didn't matter that he would have been away from his wife for the last few days and that he would have just completed a marathon flight halfway around the world...he was still willing to come out to host a single disc golfer who he had never met. Classy.

We had lunch (half of it fresh from the garden), took a tour of the B & B which Kelly basically built himself (awesome--at this point I am beginning to realize that he is just one of those guys who excels at everything), and started off on our round.

Reason No. 2 you need to play this course: The setting.

Looking around as we started playing it was pretty clear that the area was about as picturesque and ideal for disc golf as I have ever seen. Green everywhere. The woods are healthy and full. Thick grass covers rolling hills around lakes and ponds. Kelly told me that the course really just kept evolving over time and it is easy to see how. Have you ever heard an artist say that they are trying to discover the final product, to let it reveal itself? This land had to reveal the course that was made to be there. Each hole fits perfectly where it is. No throwaways.

Reason No. 3 you need to play this course: The golf.

As the round went on, the hospitality and the setting faded into the background as the quality of the disc golf showed itself. I don't think I have ever played a course that so excellently balanced length, technicality, slope, right and left handedness, risk, reward, challenge, and fun. You would be satisfied playing this course no matter what you are looking for, it has something for everyone. Best of all, it is fair. There was not a single place on a single hole where I felt like luck was the prevailing factor. The most skilled player will be the most successful player out here (provided they keep their head on straight) 9 times of 10. I could go on about every hole like some others have, but just know that the golf is the best part of the whole experience, and that is not meant to diminish the rest of the experience at all.

My day at Flyboy will be something I will remember for a long time. I have played a lot of great courses in my time, and I always had a hard time singling any one out as a favorite. That problem is solved as Flyboy is my head and shoulders number one. I officially have a man crush on this course.

Even though it was tough the course it isnt supposed to be hard its made for people to enjoy and have a great disc golf experience. I loved the rubber mats on every tee box as well. The course was in great shape and conditioned fairly well! I would recommend this course to any decent disc golfer! I plan to play it again in the fall!

Glad to See Flyboy on Top 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 21, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

My three buddies and I were traveling south to Florida from Wisconsin and spent a night at Flyboy on the way. I have never had a better experience in my life. Coming in with no expectations, Kelly and his family showed us true southern hospitality. Not to mention the most beautiful B&B and disc golf course ever. Being amateur disc golfers with a passion for the game it was a bit intimidating heading out to play with Kelly and his buddies, but I have never played with a greater group of guys. Strangers felt like friends in minutes.

The course itself is beyond words. It is an environment unlike any other. A non disc golfer would be in awe of the scenery. The holes were challenging in the most fun of ways. There were a couple of holes mixed in for an ace run, and a couple that required multiple drives. In 27 holes of disc golf there was not one hole that I was disappointed with. I have played 7 of the top 10 rated courses on DG course review and I personally do not believe any of them come anywhere close to Flyboy.

Cons:

I don't live there.

Other Thoughts:

If you love this game and want to experience it in a way that nowhere else can offer, you must contact Kelly and make a reservation to stay at and play his disc golf mecca. Thank you Kelly for your hospitality and beautiful disc golf course.

Disc Golf Heaven 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 17, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

"When I die I hope Heaven is just a little bit like this place." -Brock Woodall, 2011 Atlanta Open.

This is the course to end all courses. Future disc golf development need not attempt to improve upon what has already been laid down in Whitesburg, Georgia. Just do your best to mimic what you see here and you'll be doing just fine haha!
This fantastic disc golf course incorporates everything, and i mean E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G that you would want if variety, entertainment and a challenging yet uber fair test of skill is your thing. Length a plenty, elevation galore, scenic surroundings, water hazards, tight/ short, tight/ long, open/ short and open/ long fairways, gimmicky yet interesting and very fun putting greens with everything from a elevated basket to a basket in the ground, mandos, peninsulas, par 3's, 4's and 5's... HAHAHA! Just literally everything. Its funny how awesome this course is.

Cons:

The cons are simple. On a rainy day the rubber tees might prove to be a little slick, especially for those holes that you really want to open up on. This is an issue that most likely will never change due to the course being located throughout an aviation community. Also the course has a mix of baskets from Lightning DB-7's to Innova Discatchers. The Lightning baskets are definitely not my favorite by any means. They have his inverted shaped basket that seems to not catch anything higher than midway up the chains. This will be most likely be addressed over time as more people play the course and more money is raised for Kelly to improve to an all Discatcher course.

Other Thoughts:

I have been playing disc golf for 5 years and I have played 137 courses across the country. I have made my living from this game for the past two years so every time I see a new course I am highly critical of it. I have never left a course with the feeling I had after the first time I played @ FlyBoy. I have no problems saying that it is the best course I have ever played. Typically, if you design course that has only 3 or 4 'ehh...' holes you're not doing too bad, this place has none of those. And its 27 holes long!
A lot of people like to hypothesize what we can do to grow the game in the public's eye. Well i believe I finally have the solution. We somehow get an imprint of this place and stamp one in every state in the country. Texas and California can have two because they are pretty big. The nation will see what disc golf is all about and people will realize how marketable our game really is. Stamp one in every country and BOOM- Disc Golf is now an Olympic sport. Unfortunately this might be very difficult so until we find a way to make this possible, make a reservation with Kelly to stay at the bed and breakfast, get a plane ticket to Georgia and come experience disc golf in a way that would have made Steady Ed proud of the game he invented.

A weekend to remember! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 21, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Starting off we were able to play the short 18 hole course Friday evening that was just pure fun. A mix of short holes, with a few long holes, and water shots. Very fun course.

Now to the main course.

This course has so many signature holes that it would make up its own 18 hole course. Hole 2, 3, 9, 13, 15, 22, 23, 25, 26, and 27 are all amazing. Hole 3 is the hole that defines this course, amazing 780ft par 5 across water with an awesome view.

This is by far the best course I have ever played. You need every shot in your bag and you need to execute every one of them. There are annys to hyzer to side arm shots all in a single hole. You don't need a huge arm to shoot down even with it being 13,000ft which makes it good for every player. That is what makes this course even better, everyone can play, have fun and shoot good.

The baskets are slowly all becoming disc catchers but even the Db5's are awesome with double chained by Kelly. The tee pads are rubber mats with a lot of grip. There are great tee signs that are very detailed and even tell you how far it is to the water is if it in play. Kelly had brooms at the tees just in case of sand or pine needles on the pad.

This course has so much innovative ways to make a hole that you never get tired of saying WOW THIS IS AMAZING! Hole 22 with an in ground basket, hole 24 with the Climo pin placement, hole 25 with the peninsula green, hole 26 with the tunnel 300ft shot, and so many more.

Cons:

There is nothing wrong with this course I can to find. I would say one thing that would make this course even better would be having water coolers (like ball golf courses) around the course. We decided to play all 27 through and we were dying for some cold water. Which I would pay extra for.

Other Thoughts:

When my buddy and I arrived Friday afternoon we were speechless at the hanger, B&B, and the personal tour of the course from Kelly. Kelly wanted to show and play the course with us Friday night but had previous engagements. Instead he gave us a map of the short course he came up with for the Fly Girl tournament and told us have at it. He even allowed us to go fishing in the lake by hole 3 Friday evening.

We had 5 of us staying at the B&B and were feed by Kelly's mother breakfast and lunch. I slept on the couch and Kelly went above and beyond to show how bad he felt I had to sleep on the couch. Amazing place and amazing people, watch out for Morgan the loveable terrier that opens your bag and steals food out of it.

I did bring my dog but be sure to ease your dog into the course dogs. Once they know each other they are best friends.

If you plan on playing this course watch the ATO on you tube and study the maps and you will be very happy you did.

I will for sure be going back to play this course whenever I get a chance.

Deserving of the Top Spot! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 22, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Where to begin?

1) Kelly is the most gracious and amazing host. This course is under constant care and tweaking at his hands. It was my privilege just to be able to play the game I love on the greatest piece of disc golf property I have ever seen. Kelly constantly offered us refreshments and took care of us like no other...and we were not even overnight guests.

2) Epic signature holes...they're everywhere. #3 is the single greatest disc golf hole I have ever seen. I am not ashamed to admit that I went in the water on my 3rd shot...but I almost cleared the water. Additionally, #2, #5, #7, #9, #13, #15, and #25 should all be considered for a Top 50 list of best disc golf holes.

3) Even the holes that are not on the list I just mentioned are well-designed and serve to add challenge and diversity to the course. There is not a single "filler hole" at Flyboy. Each hole is well thought-out, carefully planned, and nicely implemented.

4) Creativity - Hole 22 has a buried basket...I'm thinking roller ace. The CTP "dock shot" adds some spice in the middle of the round.

5) Equipment is in excellent condition. Tee pads are rubber but provide an ample amount of support and grip.

6) There is enough diversity in the design to keep everyone interested. Beginners will definitely not enjoy most of the course. However, there are a few ace runs mixed in to give them challenges they are used to handling. Big arms will definitely enjoy the length. Seasoned players who don't throw particularly far will enjoy using a variety of shot-shapes and flight paths.

Cons:

This is nit-picky, but relevant...and also a positive. (see "other thoughts" below) This course is difficult to review because it changes so often. The course that I played is different from the course shown in the pictures due to the necessary removal of the runway hole. I understand that for the recent FlyGirls tourney their was some redesign as well including a shorter 18 hole course. So...obviously my review will not expound on that.

Other Thoughts:

I listed only one con...and I want to further clarify this issue. I think it is amazing that Kelly is able and willing to alter the course. While I see this course as "The Best of the Best", I believe that Kelly sees improvements he can continue to make. I can't imagine how it could get much better.

The amenities and atmosphere were sensational. I didn' think about anything other than disc golf for nearly 5 hours. I soaked in the course as best I could...but I doubt I could learn every nuance. Having played 100+ courses, this is easily the most challenging round I have ever played. The sheer beauty of the terrain, the design of the course, the hospitality of the hosts, and the available pro-shop and refreshments make FlyBoy the greatest disc golfing experience I have ever encountered.

I got to play a majority of the course with Kelly, Brad, and Bill. They are all excellent players, and I learned a lot from them since I am really a novice/intermediate player. Some might say that the appointment playing schedule is a con. I disagree. I was truly happy with playing the round with guys who love the game and love the course.

In conclusion, there is nothing I can say that will do this course justice. It is the best course I have ever played. I have played Flip City and Idlewild (and will play Blueberry this summer) and while they are great courses, FlyBoy is in a league of its own. My friends went to the IDGC to play and on their way back home were going to FlyBoy. I left at 6:00 am and drove from Nashville to Whitesburg on a Tuesday morning just to meet them and play this course. I would do it again in a heartbeat. I conclude most of my reviews in the following manner: if you are in the area, give Kelly a call and try to set up a time to play this course. This is one of the very few "destination courses" in the country. It merits a trip solely to play this gem. I would drive many hours simply to play this course again...and I plan on doing so in the near future.

Thanks to Kelly for designing and maintaining a world-class disc golf facility and for letting a lowly duffer like myself enjoy his work.

Only problem was were going to arrive the night before (Easter). Kelly said no problem, his parents waited up and even had Easter dinner for us. In the morning another awesome meal. Man Kelly's mom can cook! The course had everything, elavation changes, ace shots, height changes to the baskets and of course water. #3 was my favorite and I birdied it. Every hole had brooms to sweep the tees and every water hole had poles with scoop to retrieve your disc. The hanger/house is only for the coolest of disc golfers. Pool table, model planes, jacuzzi tub and big screen tvs.

I can't help but judge courses on their beauty and Flyboy Aviation is spectacularly beautiful with pristine maintenance, grand trees and peaceful ponds. The course is challenging and demanding as I believe good golf should be. It has true par 4's and 5's as well as reachable par 3's. It is apparent that significant thought was put into the design of every hole. There are no two holes alike which is rarely the case. I've had some great opportunities in this sport which have allowed me to play disc golf in every state in the Union as well as many other countries. I do not hesitate to say that this is now my favorite disc golf course.

The Perfect Disc Golf Destination 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 27, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

The Design:
Kelly has created a course that is quite literally "Alive". As more and more big names come to play this course; names like Ken Climo and Barry Schultz, not to mention design legends like Chuck Kennedy and Fred Salaz, all have left their mark. Kelly is the kind of guy who is always seeking advice and open to change, striving for the next level. As we played throughout the day he told us multiple stories of how holes had been changed and modified over time thanks to the advice of these disc golf legends. He has kept a beautifully humble spirit and is open to new ideas and suggestions, always looking to improve the course and players experience.

The Challenge:
This course will demand every part of your physical and mental disc golf game. Coming to play shortly after seeing footage from the Atlanta open I knew that the course would be long and difficult so I had made mental preparations as well as what I call "side bag" preparation. Basically that means that I had about 5-7 good/dependable discs (of the 23 I carry) set aside that I was prepared to lose. It's hard to describe what it's like, standing on the edge of the lake on signature hole #3, heart pumping, disc gripped tightly in hand... You've just thrown the perfect tee-shot, mashing it out to the 470' mark. Now you've got 310' to go with nothing in-between you and the basket but water... lots and lots of water. You're going crazy... park this and you could have a drop in eagle... duff it into the water and you'll be lucky to save par... Amazingly I didn't lose a single disc that day, however the sad end of this story is that I froze on my Eagle putt, and then my birdie putt, and walked off with the most disappointing par I've had in my entire life. I will be back to set the score straight with hole #3 as well as several other of the holes at this beautiful course. That's the effect it has on you, it gets in your head. I ended up shooting a 92 at Flyboy, but it was a "Drive for show putt for dough" kinda day as when adding up my missed short putts I could have easily saved 10 strokes. Each hole on this course is framed in my memory as I strategize a plan of attack for my next round at Flyboy. I can only hope it will come sooner than later.

Shot selection:
Holes ranging from 190'-1080', par 3's 4's and 5's, hyzer, anhyzer, roller, big air, and placement shots; uphill, downhill, sidehill, through the woods, over the water and through the triple mandatory (not kidding, that hole cost me my only bogey). This course has fantastic variety. I used nearly every disc in my bag as well as nearly every shot in my arsenal (don't think I threw any forehand rollers or tomahawks though I managed to stay in the fairway most of the time and those are typically scramble shots for me).

The Scenery:
The course is set in the beautiful rolling hills of Georgia. There are 3 large lakes that come into play as well as adding beautiful scenery. The red Georgia clay is quite striking, and adds beautiful contrast to the lush palette of greens in the hills, and browns in the forest.

The Maintenance:
Kelly spends more time every week picking up trash, pulling weeds, adding wood-chips, and mowing fairways then playing disc golf. He keeps the neighborhood happy by keeping the area immaculate. That's the trade-off, he is allowed to escort players all around the community's property to play the course as long as he maintains all the land. Make sure you thank him for the time he has put into making this dream course.

The Company:
Playing the course with its owner, designer and guide certainly has its benefits. Kelly and Brad were a joy to play with and I would gladly throw plastic with them any day. I played the round with 2 of my younger brothers and my father so with Kelly and Brad we had a group of 6, ages 13-53 all with different styles and skill levels. Never once though was anyone made to feel awkward or out of place. It felt like we were all good friends out for a stroll and a chat, surrounded by beauty enjoying this very special experience together.

The Accommodations:
We (my 2 brothers, father and I) spent the night in Kelly's parents Bed & Breakfest... I would recommend this to everyone, it is well worth the stay. We were treated to more than adequate space for the 4 of us and true southern hospitality. My dad and I stayed up late shooting pool in the airplane hanger (how cool is that!) while my brothers helped themselves to homemade cupcakes made by Kelly's mom. In the morning we woke up too hot coffee, sausage, eggs, fresh fruit and the best biscuits I've ever had (they just don't make them like that up in Wisconsin!)

Cons:

This course is not in my backyard

Other Thoughts:

When I first started seeing this course rise up in the ratings as quickly as it did I will admit that I was skeptical. However after being there and experiencing it for myself I now understand. I don't see how anyone can come, spend the night at the B&B, play the course with Kelly and walk away disappointed. If you don't believe me, then you'll simply have to go see it for yourself. Trust me, you will not be disappointed.

I almost feel like a different kind of review is needed for a place like this. So many of the typical problems with courses (poor markings/navigation, litter, over crowdedness, erosion, danger to pedestrians etc.) are just total non-factors at Flyboy. You eliminate all of that when you're being escorted by the owner/designer himself on private property. This was truly the most unique disc golf experience I have had to date. The only thing I can think of that would come close to comparing is High bridge. Perhaps we will need to create a new category to judge these "Destination Courses" against each other. I just can't see how a typical, "county/city park" would ever be able to compete against this caliber of course. Private and pay-to-play courses are definitely (in my opinion) paving the future of disc golf.

Kelly and family, thanks again for a wonderful experience.

Pros:

It is rather difficult to know where to start because there is such a WoW factor involved here. From the moment you drive onto the property you suddenly realize that this is no ordinary disc golf park. Who else has a disc golf basket at the entrance of their house and on top of a hangar with a wind sock as a flag?
About the course: 27 holes of disc golf bliss, requiring every shot imaginable. The true par 5's and 4's will remind you of ball golf (playing for the next shot). There are monster holes, elevation changes (virtually every hole), water holes that eat discs like the Cookie Monster (if you throw poor shots), wooded and open crusher holes: Your disc golf hunger will be satiated. The signage was great, the rubber pads were fine, and the layout flowed well. Bring your A game and alot of junk discs.
What makes Flyboy unique if not surreal is the fact the you have Pro course juxtaposed upon a private airstrip, nestled in verdent rolling hills dotted by beautiful homes and arching aircraft hangars. Furthermore and most importantly the whole experience is orchestrated by Kelly Leggette, his parents and his compatriot course manager Brad.
The course alone is a 5 star tour d'force. I'd have to say what marks this trip for me is the personal attention and professional approach taken by Kelly. The bed and breakfast is awesome and a must. The Pro shop was cool. What impressed me was Kelly's love for the game and his relentless pursuit of perfection. This course is as close to that ideal as you can get.

Cons:

None

Other Thoughts:

If you plan on visiting Flyboy, please return all the hospitality and generosity you receive back to Kelly, Brad, and Kelly's family. They have worked extremely hard to create something most of us could only dream about. Upon playing Flyboy, you will realize that the experience should be cultivated, cherished and not just consumed.

5* Course 2+ years drive by

Pros:

The atmosphere this couse provides from airplanes taking off and landing, long 1000' holes, signature water shots, elevation change, tight shots, open shots, risky shots...I could go on, all these add up to make one amazing and super fun to play course. Kelley and his family were VERY hospitable. I was there for the Atlanta Open and during the tournament round the wind was very heavy at times gusting upwards of 35+ mph, this makes the course way more challenging. I did have a chance to play it the day before the tournament with calm winds and it really tests your skills. Hopefully the recent tournaments held there will regain some trust in the neighbors to allow this course to be more freely played, but as of now you have to play with a "guide." The rubber pads were great in my opinion. I didn't play them in the rain but had no problems with footing or slipping on any hole. Mulch surrounding teepads. The neighborhood kids were selling snacks and drinks around hole 17!

Cons:

The heavy winds during the tournament round! But nothing with the course.

Other Thoughts:

Call ahead of time to set up a time with Kelley to play, but he is a very nice guy who loves showing people around.
If you don't want to risk losing a disc on hole 3, toss it in the water just on your side of the lake and get it then take drop from DZ across lake.
