Alright nothing to write home about 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 4, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Inside the city course with some trees however you can hyzer over a lot of them. Easily reachable by public transport. Well manicured park and they recently had the tee pads upgraded to concrete, which is a huge improvement. Course design is alright mostly straight throws with a left or right curve at the end. Some elevation which makes for a nice contrast on the course.

Cons:

Busy park. Becareful to look before throwing. Certain times of the day foot traffic can make it a wait to throw or just skip the hole. Forrest Lawn is not the best neighbourhood however the course is a perfect activity for all ages in this area.

Other Thoughts:

This is a good course for the neighbourhood but not worth going out of your way for. I would rather play the other courses in the area over this one.

Pros:

- Great tee pads.
- Decent variety considering the limited space the course is set up on in an urban park setting.
- Baskets are in decent shape.
- Park is keep decently clean considering the area.

Cons:

- Forest Lawn is known as one of the shadiest/dodgiest areas in Calgary, though we've played the course a dozen times and never had problems with anything or anyone.
- It's a smaller course in an urban public park setting, you get all the stuff that comes along with that (high pedestrian traffic at certain times, noisy at times, etc.)
- Confusing layout for first timers, especially the Back 9.

Other Thoughts:

As others have said, this isn't a "go out of your way to play it" type course, but if you're in Calgary it's an enjoyable little course to play with a few little elevation changes that are fun.

We have a soft spot for this course as it's one of the courses we first started playing on and will sometimes go there instead of Baker or one of the "better" courses just because it's quick and easy.

A typical, decent DGC. 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 25, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course now has 18 concrete tees which play to 9 baskets for effectively 18 unique holes.

There are a decent number of trees which are well utilized to require a variety of shots and keep it challenging. And the big hill in the centre of the park is utilized well. There's enough space here for some long par 3s, with the occasional opportunity to rip a long drive. The baskets are great and the sunken tee markers are in good shape.

The park will take it's knocks being in such an urban area and not that hidden away, but truth be told it's actually clean and I've seen both city crews and local disc golfers cleaning it up.

As mentioned the trees create a challenge on most holes, but by the same token it's a forgiving course because when you miss a shot, you can approach the hole from any side to save par. You're not going to wind up deep in bushes with a lost disc here.

Cons:

The park is definitely not isolated, with a bit of traffic through it but a lot of traffic around the perimeter on the streets that border it. Frequently kids and/or homeless people hang out in the bushes on top of the hill, but not so much during the daytime.

You don't want to play here during the school year during lunch of after school, as there is a huge influx of traffic through the course at that time.

[UPDATE Sep. 2014: The natural tee pads are now concrete tee pads, and they're nicely done with circular pads on top of the hill. Upgraded my rating +0.5 as the pads are a nice improvement over the dirt pits.]

And figuring out the layout will certainly require a map your first time through, but at least you have the tee markers there once you've found the spot.

Other Thoughts:

It's not going to wow anyone, but it's worth playing to be sure. If you're a local, you would certainly play this once in a while for variety. If you're from out of town, I'd put this behind the other 3 courses (Baker Park, Old Refinery Park, and even 9 hole Thorncliffe)... but if you wanted to play them all there's no reason not to play this course, it's definitely decent.

Nice Little Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 9, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Well-kept park; nice elevation changes. Good mix of short and long holes, left and right turns. For a course with only 9 baskets, the 18-hole layout works well. The locals have several other configurations for play and hold a mini every Sunday afternoon, barring blizzard conditions.

Cons:

Hole numbers are on sunken concrete markers and can be difficult to find. Natural tees can become muddy and slick. Occasionally pedestrians will slow your play.

Other Thoughts:

I have played several 9-basket courses in city parks. This is probably the best.
