Located on joint base Pearl Harbor Hickam at the historic Fort Kamehameha, this 19 hole disc golf course overlooks the entrance to Pearl Harbor with breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. Although a temp course, like most of Hawaii, this course is played regularly by military and civilians alike.

Designed by Joe Royer and David Combs, the course offers a combination of wooded to tightly wooded holes as well as some wide open ones to truly air it out. Holes range from 180-380 feet and are all par 3's, making par for the course 57. Tee pads are semi-permanent, using string to distinguish where the lines are, and the baskets on the majority of holes have multiple pin placements to keep things fresh. Targets are often protected by foliage but also include bunkers, old naval housing, a playground, and tennis court. Hole two throws over the ocean for an ace run but other than that, there is little to no water that comes into play during the round. The terrain changes as well throughout the round, starting near the beach with palms and base housing, then grassy fields and bunkers, to eventually desert terrain with wicked thorn bushes and blistering heat. The course was extremely diverse both mentally and physically, making for a challenging yet very enjoyable round. It helps when you have great company as David and Joe are very passionate about their course and disc golf in general.

As the review prior to mine stated, this course can only be accessed if you are sponsored on or are in the service. And even if you do get on base, one of the course designers must be present in order to help navigate as well as have access to a basket. Because of this, availability to play the course entirely depends on their work schedule, and whether or not they are deployed. This course, although accessible now, may not be around for too many more years considering it's only a matter of time before they transfer or get out of the service all together so if you do get the chance to play this course at some point...count your blessings.

What makes Fort Kamehameha DGC so unique is the history that took place during WWII right on site. I took my father in law out with me, a retired Major in the Army who did three tours as a combat nurse overseas, and he along with Joe and David spent time sharing with me many of the historical events that took place in the area. It brought me chills thinking about the sacrifices that were made and the carnage that took place only feet away from where I was enjoying a game of disc golf. I felt honored to play where the Fleet Admiral and his officers once lived and know that a lot of memories, both good and bad, were had here at one time. The whole experience was truly amazing and one I will never forget!
