Nice Water Hazard, But Still Below Average 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 11, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

- respectable length fitting in as many holes as the park could support
- well maintained park
- plenty of street parking
- practice basket
- great incorporation of water hazard
- Discatcher baskets generally in good shape
- designer tried to incorporate elevation change wherever possible

Cons:

- may be some crowds from nearby baseball diamond, but this seems unlikely to be an issue most days
- several low lying water retention areas likely to cause wet feet if you aren't careful
- walking paths throughout park could pose safety hazard
- practice basket mount height is super weird
- natural tees
- tee signs are worn and have no maps
- limited obstacles on most holes, except near water hazard
- elevation change is very limited
- openness of most of course could case significant challenges on windy days
- pars are way too high, with several par 4s and hole 12 as a wide open par 5
- no additional amenities (benches, garbage cans, restrooms, etc.)
- no next tee signs

Other Thoughts:

This course is currently pretty low on reviews and appears to be a bit overrated. I agree with The Valkyrie Kid that the course description needed some updating - so I went ahead and did it. With the first hole being 141 feet, I thought "this is going to be a really short course!" However, this is by far the shortest hole, and it's a modest but respectable length after that. I think hole 1 could have been made longer anyway.

I almost want to give this course a 2, but it's not quite there. The 12 holes instead of 9 is nice, but I feel like hole 2 shouldn't even exist or should be relocated, as its in a low lying area that will almost always be wet - it looks designed for water retention. Alternatively, I feel like the walk between 7 and 8 along the river could have had another hole worked in.

The biggest issues with this course are the natural tees, mediocre tee signs, and lack of obstacles. It's an ok course, but not very exciting to play. Navigation was mostly easy enough, but I always find this a bit challenging in a wide open course with baskets everywhere, no real tees, and small tee signs - which direction should I head next? Next tee signs would go a long way towards correcting this.

Hole 3 throws over the river but there's really no line through the trees to do this. It can be done, but I feel like there's a lot of luck involved. I'd rather see a clear line to try to hit.

The design of this course is pretty good for the space, it just doesn't have any wow factor whatsoever. I played because I was out in the area; I wouldn't go out of my way to seek it out. Some of the rough down by the water holes can get a bit thick, but mostly this isn't a major issue.

I don't think any of the holes on this course should be above par 3, except for perhaps hole 12, which is 454'. It is still wide open for the most part, but perhaps could warrant a par 4 due to length (it's currently a par 5). As a final note, the practice basket had the basket part mounted really high on the pole, so the opening to hit the chains was maybe 12" - it was really strange. I've seen plenty of baskets installed too high or too low, but usually the rim to basket distance is pretty constant. I guess it will force you to pinpoint your accuracy during warmups!

There are walking paths and a baseball field in the park, although there was virtually nobody there when I was (Sunday mid-day). I suspect this park isn't terribly busy, and most of the disc golf has an area of its own, but there could be safety concerns if a lot of walkers were out, etc.

I Just Didn't Click With This Course! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 29, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course description states that Fox Hill is a short, open pitch and putt course. I think it's probably time to upgrade the description. I don't believe a course can be listed as a pitch and putt when the last hole is 454 feet long.

The course sits in a medium sized park. The park is flat except for a drainage ditch which runs down the middle of the park. This ditch area does provide for some of the elevation loss/gain. On the side away from the street runs a creek. The rough here is very thick and nasty. Avoid it if possible.

The course has a nice course map along with the usual disc golf rules sign. The baskets are Discatchers with the yellow band. There are no tee pads, just worn places in the grass. The # 1 pad was rutted. The signs are simple little posts which give you the hole #, par and distance.

The course starts with a simple little 141' open, ACE run. I thought OK, the course description is correct-pitch and putt. But then holes began to get tougher, with nasty rough running the entire length of the hole.

Cons:

I had a little trouble negotiating the course.

Too many holes were just wide open throws in the field.

Windy.

Harsh penalty for finding the rough.

Other Thoughts:

I guess the designer did a nice job utilizing the entire park. Unfortunately, it just didn't excite me. I would say it's just another typical Chicago 12-er. That may be a unfair comparison because I've found many Chicago 9'ers that I've really enjoyed. This just wasn't one for me. You may like it more or it might just suit your game. Try it and see.

i have had better 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 5, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

- always mowed
- good warm-up course before you go to a real one.

Cons:

- all the holes are in the open.
- poor signage
- odd layout

Other Thoughts:

I couldn't bring myself to throw more than two holes before I got completely bored. The designer did the best he could with land that was available. It seems to be a waste of 10 good baskets to be placed on this land, just not a good place for a course.

Good for what it is 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 20, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course starts very short the first few holes (the 1st hole is maybe 150' ace run with no obstacles), but the holes get long as you proceed through the course. It runs along a small wooded creek that has some good risk/reward type throws, but most of the holes are open. The course is right next to a neighborhood and the course designer did as much with it as he/she could. there are a few wooded holes that require tight shots, but most are open. A great place to work on your game. There is a practice hole near the road (which is always nice) that makes for a decent 14th hole on your way back to the car.

Cons:

This is obviously a beginners course, but is fun none the less. The tee boxes are dirt and could get muddy if you come after a good rain. Navigation can be difficult as there are no signs as to where the pins are nor where the next hole is. If I hadn't been there with people who had played there before I don't know if I would have found some of the holes.

Other Thoughts:

This course may play a lot harder in the fall and spring as many of the holes play along retention ponds that are currently dry, but will be serious obstacles is full of water. Given the area and land to work with, the designer did a really nice job creating a course that is both fun and geared for beginners. Quick rounds add to the fun and should be a decent local course for kids in the neighborhood to get to know this sport we all love. the third hole is fun, as it is a blind shot over a small creek to the left. The creek is shallow enough that if you hit a tree you can get your disc back (as I had to do).

Open course but fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 4, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course plays around a medium sized multi-use park with some minor elevation changes. Some holes play near a creek at the edge of the park, and this presents a hazard to errant throws. Much of the park is open with some scattered young trees, with some brushy wooded areas along the edges of the park. The holes against and in the wooded area add a nice complement to the open holes, and offer a bit more challenge.

There is an ok mix of longer and shorter holes, with most holes reachable on a good accurate drive. Around the edges of the park, you'll need right and left turning shots to have runs at the basket. Two holes stood out, a tunnel shot through the woods, and a shot through a gap in the trees over a creek, and these two holes helped make the course more memorable.

The baskets are nice new DISCatchers that are easy to see, including a practice basket at the beginning of the course. There are small posts as hole markers with the number and distance, and most holes are visible from the tee. Navigation is fine throughout the course, especially if you check out the course map near the practice basket.

Cons:

The tees are grass, and don't always provide the best footing especially on the longer holes where a drive is required. The areas that were worn and obviously used as the tees were right on top of the hole markers, making it difficult to do any kind of run-up on the tee area at times.

Though there were some cool holes, many of the open holes felt very repetitive. The designers did a nice job with what they had in the field areas of the park, but there wasn't much to work with until some of the small trees grow up.

Hole maps at the tees would be nice, as there are a few blind holes that you might have to scout the first time through. A couple holes played near or over busy walking paths, so be prepared to wait on pedestrians to clear the fairways.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great beginner course, with lots of reachable holes, some more difficult shots, and not too many places where discs will really disappear. More advanced players will enjoy a couple of the more challenging holes, but find the open field holes a little easy and similar.

This is a fun little course to play if you're in the area, and it's great to see a nice course that had neighborhood families out playing. Stop by if you're in the area, but don't drive all the way out here just for this course. If you've got some extra time after Jericho Lake and Oswego, this is a nice easy way to end the day.
