Beholding Fine Freehold's Nine 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 17, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

+ Every single tee pad, while on the small side, is made from tiled concrete. They feel sturdy and level underfoot.
+ Each and every basket has a 'next tee' sign attached to it, even though the following tees are very close to the previous baskets. Some 18-hole courses out there could learn a thing or two from this course.
+ All nine tee pads have tree trunk benches. For a tiny course like this, that's a nice surprise to see.
+ The colorful tee signs clearly indicate the par and distance on each diagram.
+ Gentle elevation changes.

Cons:

- I did not see any of the other tee pads for the longer layout, despite some longer measurements on this course's page. Did I miss something?
- Mostly flat, always wide-open, and brief distances make for an under-stimulating round.
- No wooded holes at all.
- The course plays too close to athletic fields. It will not be playable during sporting events or if there are students around.

Other Thoughts:

My favorite hole here was definitely 3. The tiny stream combined with the raised basket made the hole feel like it was just an ace-run hole at a much larger park. My least favorite hole here could be hole 5 because of how plain it was.

As for the course as a whole, Freehold High School's 9-hole course was a surprise. All of the tee pads, signage, baskets and benches were present and in decent shape. The course is very consistent, which I liked very much. That just by itself earned the course several marks. This is just the course to go if a new player wants to learn how to throw far. There are no trees to get in the way (for better or worse), and the fairways are large enough to accommodate a novice's errant tosses.

Holes 4 - 8 play around a soccer field, however. There are bleachers and athletic equipment to avoid. During a game, this course will be full of players and spectators. During school hours, this course will be full of students.
Also, the holes feel too similar. Numerous flat and wide-open throws dead ahead are good for the beginner to get a feel for their discs, but more seasoned players will undoubtedly be more focused on getting birdies. There are some gentle elevation changes like with holes 1, 2 and 9, but, like with everything else here, they are more for the beginner to overcome than the multi-year player.

Bottom line: Freehold HS has a nice gentle collection of holes to play featuring good tee pads and signage. Understand going in that it is only meant to serve as a kind of wide-open training ground for novices, and you will have a leisurely time trying for birdies.

Good Practice Spot 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 12, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Good local spot to get in some practice. Open field school course. Very short holes, wide open, very little to challenge the avg. disc golfer, but an excellent quick stop to get some discing in. Great sign board at the beginning of the course, good info and course map.
Basic 9 holes, good putter/midrange course to work on your upshot accuracy. Good to know there is a practice in central Monmouth Co.

Cons:

So many baskets within each tee...short course. Uninteresting to play as designed. I mix up the tees/holes to make it challenging. When school is in progress, unplayable. As it is on weekends when the ball field are being used.

Other Thoughts:

Nice to see a highschool working to promote the sport. I like the option that this course provides to get in some practice when I'm in the Freehold area. Now....will Turkey Swamp pick up the ball and lay down a disc golf course, now that Ocean County Park has put in a new 9 holes...soon to be 18.holes. Perfect spot for an 18 holes!

a good way to kill time if you're only 15 minutes away 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 3, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

If you're in the area, I'd recommend giving it a try. There isn't much exciting here, but it isn't a bad course. There are holes that vary from 160ish feet up to around 280 feet.

Cons:

The fields behind the school where the course is look pretty dumpy and there is a fair amount of trash in the woods.

Other Thoughts:

I wouldn't drive more than 15 minutes to play this course.
