Pros:

Freeman Lake DGC is a lightly wooded 18 hole course that has one water carry over an inlet of the lake on the back nine and some pretty views of the lake.

The baskets are older Mach's. Not the best baskets on the market anymore but they still get the job done. One basket and pin placement per hole.

The tee signs are solid. They feature a basic hole map which shows any OB that's in play. There's also a more detailed description of the OB on the right side of the map. In addition to that they have the hole #, par and distance. Basic but they get the job done.

The designers did about as good as could've been done with what they had to work with. There's only one hole which is even slightly "wooded", which is hole 3. It's basically just a tunnel shot with a treeline on each side. They do have a few other baskets tucked into the treeline or at least a group of trees to make approaching and putting a little trickier.

The tee pads are nicely done. Plenty long and grippy. All are poured level and in good shape. One tee pad hole.

The course is free to play and the park itself was in great shape during our visit. The front and back nine each start and end by the parking lot which is always appreciated when possible.

Cons:

The walking trail comes into in a number of areas on the back nine. A few of the baskets were a little too close to the path for my liking.

Lots of similar feeling holes. Especially on the front nine. There's just not much for unique features to be utilized honestly. Very generic feeling park course imo. If it wasn't for the lake there's no chance that this course would be rated as the 6th highest in the state. I don't even understand how that's possible.

There's only one hole that even throws over the lake. Two other ones come kind of close to it I guess.

Hole 13's tee pad is not facing the right direction. I'm assuming that this was because of some prior iteration of the course. All the other pads where good though so I'm not sure what changed for this hole exactly. Definitely felt like an ad libbed hole though.

Other Thoughts:

This is a decent course for sure. I've only played it once and never any of the older versions. I was surprised that this one was rated as high as it was though. Good course but nothing really stood out. It's worth a spin if you're nearby for sure. But don't expect to be blown away.

Make Freeman Lake Great Again!

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 7, 2024 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Excellent rolling hills in a nice large park setting. Teepads are the perfect size with gentle scoring that grips well enough when wet. Mature trees shape the fairways throughout this course. This course gives you the opportunity to grip and rip some bombs while still being forced to shape shots. I never got a repetitive feel due to the varied shaped fairways, water, and artificial OB that comes into play (roads/sidewalks).

Cons:

This course always had potential to be a great one, but never realized that potential. Low ceilings throughout the course rob the fun of shot shaping fun. Time to trim up these trees.

The silo on the first water hole (hole 13) that was a unique feature to this course is now gone. That hole is barely playable with the brush growing up into tall trees along the shore. Holes 15 and 16 play through a busy area of the park that could be unplayable in the summer due to non-disc golf park patrons. A walking trail was added that butts up right next to hole 16's basket.

The transition from hole 3 to 4 and back across from hole 6 to 7 crosses a creek where the concrete ford has started to wash away around it. Hole 18 does not finish at the parking lot. This course must've changed in the last 15 years, because I do not remember this huge flaw. It now requires a long walk back up hill to your vehicle. What a bummer to cap off such a fun round.

Other Thoughts:

Time to revamp this course and fix the design issues. There's plenty of great land at this park!

Formerly even more glorious

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 14, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

In a really scenic, large park, with rolling, well-manicured, lightly wooded acreage and six holes adjacent to the beautiful Freeman Lake, you get an opportunity to stretch out your intermediate arm a little bit, without usually pressing you to be technically accurate (exceptions on the water-bounded 13, 14, and especially 15!). Excellently sized, level concrete tees and good signage (glance at the next tee arrows before you throw), and slightly older DGA baskets constitute the amenities. There is a good deal of variety in available shot shaping, and hole distances range from the 280's to about 580', so don't here come looking for putter ace runs. For variety, the course signs indicate either alternate basket positions (or dual tee options) about 7 times. For tournament play, there are plenty of opportunities to 'bound' the fairways and greens with path and woods lines OB, but played casually, this course remains a good mid-level challenge, and a pretty nice 'day in the park'.

Cons:

They've obviously had to undergo a couple of redesigns over the years, but the replacement for hole 13 (lost to a path and dog park) mean mostly just another chance to put a disc in the water, as the mid-fairway gap looks to be only about 15' wide, and right at the water line, then there is a park bench in the middle of the approach fairway! I really think the ruined course flow they ended up with in combining old 13 & 14, renumbering from there, adding the uphill 17, and finishing back down and away from parking on 18 is odd. I wasn't clear on the intent of the 'extra' basket out beyond the first tee pad, and near the wood line. Practice?

There were several other places with hazardous interactions with other park patrons, such as the picnic table currently sitting 7' left of hole 14' basket, 16's basket being about 3' from the path, and the strong likelihood of a fading, downhill shot getting away from you on 11 and hitting folks on the drive/path left and long. And I know this is seasonal, but they were installing Christmas lighting displays on the sunny November day I visited, with electrical lines, and 'stay cables' very often immediately beside some baskets and tees. Is the course technically closed for the holidays, and if so, would a local please keep 'course conditions' updated so folks (like me) don't play when they shouldn't?

Other Thoughts:

In all, this course has historically had some higher ratings, probably because it plays more 'open' than some others in the region, but I felt like, when they were forced into a redesign, they could've used more of the woods to add some technicality, rather than creating the overly demanding hole 13 or the flow issue down 18.

Course particulars: After the first open hole, you have a tree to guard your approach on 2, then the only wooded lane shot on 3, followed by the longest hole rounding the wood line and back into a gap on hole 4. Both 4 and 5 technically have mandos to keep you in each of the generous fairways, situated on the north acreage of the park, where you actually may park during the off season, about 100 yards northwest of the fifth tee, in the back corner of the Target parking lot. 6 throws downslope to the wood line, making it more reachable than expected. Then 7 through 9 use scattered trees and rolling elevations to good effect, then you cross the drive to 10 (just past 11's tee and before 18's). 12 is across the driveway intersection, and throws out to a pine-guarded basket. Walk to the path on your right and look at the abandoned tee and the basket over towards the lake before taking the path to the lake side of the dog park, while choosing your sacrificial discs for the next three holes (all of which can easily wind up in the lake). 14 plays dangerously close to the water, while 15 forces a carry to the peninsula. Walk all the way to your right to the bridge, and around, before throwing 16 uphill to the basket literally within reaching distance of the path. 17 is across the path, going uphill, then you finish coming right back down on 18.

Not bad but...over-rated 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 19, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

-This is set in a nice municipal park with gradual rolling hills. Not a lot of wooded or technical holes but some really creative pin placements.
-I liked the 14 pin placement. Right next to the water.
-The holes next to the water were quite scenic showing off the beauty of Freeman Lake.
-Tee pads are concrete and finished nicely. They could be bigger if I am being picky but they aren't horrible.

Cons:

-Navigation is a bit tough here. You will definitely need UDisc. Going form 5 to 6 is a great example. There's a path that leads off into the woods from the 5 basket but the 6 tee is off toward the road.
-These baskets are old Mach 3's. They're a bit rusty but still catch like your typical Mach3. However, these are impossible to see from many of the tees. A hi-vis tape on the center pole or flags on top of the baskets would help tremendously.
-I do not understand what happened to the 16 basket. There is a paved path about 2 feet from the back of the basket. The sign indicates that the path and everything beyond is OB. This is STUPID. I have the feel that the basket was there first and then the path was built recently. Really piss poor course management on the part of the park or whoever is in charge. Whoever green-lighted the path did not consult with any disc golfer.
-15 needs a drop zone. The water carry isn't horrible but A LOT of disc golfers are not going to make that. There should be another option here.

Other Thoughts:

I know I have a lot more cons than pros but don't let that discourage you from playing here. It's not a bad course by any stretch that's just how reviews go sometimes. This is good example of a municipal course that will appeal to everyone except for those blessed with a 970+ rated game. It's not terribly hard but it is fun.

Nice Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 10, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Course was well groomed, with nice tee signs, tees and baskets. Lots of different types of altitude variation, and hole variation - open to woods to water. Navigation between holes was not too difficult. Lengths of the holes allowed for good score distribution, that is, most holes were not ones that almost everyone would get the same score on. Not crowded - only saw three people playing on a Saturday morning,.

Cons:

The course in general was partial to the right-to-left shot. The course had too many mandatories. At least one mando, on hole 5?, was difficult to locate from the tee. If I had to guess, I would say that some to most of them were put in after the course was installed because of people who threw left-to-right shots that went over street/sidewalks/other fairways instead of the intended right-to-left fairway. Note: I am a RHBH right-to-left thrower. As others have said, on a few holes near the lake, there is bird poop all over, including the concrete tee boxes.

Other Thoughts:

I liked the course. I am a pro GM, and I know that with some more practice on the course, I could double or triple the three birdies I got when I played. I talked to the twosome I saw, and they were visiting from Chattanooga, so I don't know if that means that the locals usually play somewhere else or not. I would have given the course a higher rating if it had less mandos, and a lower rating if my predominant throw was left-to-right.

But as I said, it is a nice course, and a pleasant diversion for a fun round of golf.
