One of the Classics in Ohio 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 26, 2022 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Would like to preface this review with my experience in discgolf. Now 10 years into the sport. Somewhere around only 80 courses played in about 16 states. About 930 rated. I have been lead designer on 1 course, co-designed 1 course, and did a significant amount of work on several others.

-Design (3/5)- This course is beginning to show its age in regards to design. Things that you wouldn't typically see are now showing up. For instance the Story Book trail now walks through Hole 1 fairway. Not the club's fault. Oversight from Parks. Several holes that were a par 4 around 20-25 years ago are now a mid grade par 3. Lots of holes at 200 feet and under. Overall, the holes do not tend to favor BH or FH throws. Well balanced.

-Tees (3.5/5)- Tees are adequate 5x10. Many of the tees the frame was left attached for some reason. But overall, grippy and serve the purpose. Just nothing fancy.

-Ammenities (2.5/5)- They get bonus points for having the old school Innova logo on the baskets. Single row of chains just isn't the standard any more. The 9 newer holes have newer baskets, but they are pretty beat up as well. Very few benches. Bathrooms near hole 1.

- Signage- (3/5) Holes are equipped with basic small signs. However, no next hole signs. Some baskets have next hole sharpied on them. I've played the course enough to know the groove, but I know the first time I was out there I got lost on a few occasions... for instance where is hole 1 teepad, where is hole 2? Where do you go to after 9? 13 to 14? etc.

- Replayability- (4/5) There is a reason that I play here on occasion. It is just fun. The short ace run holes are fun compared to the grind of big courses. It is a quickish play at about 90 minutes for 2 people. A couple of the par 4s are unique to the area. My favorite hole is probably 14. I like trying to hit that perfect turnover .

Cons:

As noted above, the course needs TLC. Trees down everywhere. Baskets need some love. Probably needs a trim in some places where the trees were probably just saplings when the course went in. Maybe adjust the distance on a few of the short par 4s to allow for better score spread.

Probably just needs club attention and maybe a yearly tournament to get this place back in good shape. Maybe consider alternate pin placements on some holes.

Other Thoughts:

16/5 = 3.2 average for this course. Which feels about right honestly. I think clean up some trees. Trim some fairways. Add some alternate pins. Hold some regular meets. Update some baskets. per usual, I will round my review to the nearest number that DGCR will allow, which is unfortunately a 3/5.

This course could easily become another 4 star course like many of the other courses in the area.

Fun little play in South Central Ohio. Highly recommend giving it a try as well as places like Paint Creek, Pike Lake, and Black Bear.

Long! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 30, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Long course with all types of holes
-A lot of elevation changes, I prefer them but depends on the player
-Nice baskets with good hole information at the tee box.
-Good test of throw power

Cons:

-Very easy to lose a disc on all holes.
-No hole location given at the tee box
-Not very well kept being a state park

Other Thoughts:

This a very challenging course that will test any player. Many risk/reward shots. A good mix of short a long holes. Tunnel shots and open shots. If you like holes in the woods, this is your course. Recently a tree fell on hole #5's basket, dented it up a little bit. All in all, a good course that is very challenging. I highly recommend writing your name and phone # on your discs before playing!

Great Seal State Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 28, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Beautiful scenery. The "Wooly Mammouth" hole is really awesome. Parks scenery was used to create the Seal of the State of Ohio. Wasn't at all crowded.

Cons:

Can lose discs if you don't have someone spot for you. Back 9 is not nearly as nice as the front 9.

Other Thoughts:

Pretty much all in the woods, and very challenging. Worth a play for the scenery alone. Front 9 is a lot more fun and scenic.

Split Decision 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 3, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

The front 9. A great mix of everything you want in a disc golf course: varying degrees of difficulty, great use of elevation changes, a mix of wooded and open holes, etc..

Cons:

The back 9. Less effort seems to have been paid. The paths are less navigatable and somewhat overgrown in places. One or two holes are hard to find.
Overall the course could benefit by improved signage.

Other Thoughts:

Will definitely play this course again...even the back 9 to give it another chance.

worth checking out 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 23, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course is quite scenic with elevation change through out the course. A good mix of long and short holes and also some very technical holes. It is an enjoyable course with the majority of holes being wooded with only a few open holes. No open crush holes but controlled distance is an advantage on the longer wooded holes.

Cons:

There seem to be many things that come to mind. The course had innova discatcher baskets but on many of them they were missing the inner chains. The baskets seemed to catch ok but couldn't understand why the inner chains were not installed. The course has natural tees but for the most part footing was good. A couple holes were quite tough to find a distinguishable fairway. Not knowing where the pin locations were made for a much longer round by walking up on many holes to find the basket then going back to tee off. The course has many leaves on the ground in the fall which leads to losing discs. Having someone spot is definitely recommended.

Other Thoughts:

This course can be frustrating. You could play even one day and not hit any trees but the next day play 10 over because of a few bad holes. After thinking back through the holes I did really enjoy my round even though I played poorly. A few improvements with the baskets and maybe concrete tees would make this course more appealing.

Great Seal State Park 2+ years drive by

Pros:

scenic. Hole 9 and 10 are back close to the parking lot. Am beginner to inter player. Has a practice putting hole. Most of the course is in shade, keeps you out of the hot sun.

Cons:

Walk up hill to hole 13 rough, but does have a bench at the top.

Other Thoughts:

Nice layout, overall good. Will get some exercise. Picnic area's, bathroom, water fountain.

Trees, trees and more trees 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 24, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

Nice setting in the woods and relatively easy to follow. Also, scorecards/maps available near the first tee.

Cons:

Tee signs lacked maps so knowing where the baskets were on longer holes was difficult. Also, some wooded holes lacked a defined fairway which made shot placement/planning a challenge.

Other Thoughts:

Great Seal had a decent mix of holes with a few open shots, many wooded holes and some with really tight fairways. Having a friend spot would be recommended as there is some really thick rough to be found in a few spots and the longer wooded holes will often have you throwing around a corner or up/down a hill with the landing not easily seen from the tee.

I can't say that I found any one hole to be an epic, stand out hole. There were definitely some fun holes to be played but overall nothing terribly memorable.

Things that would have helped this course are some more informative tee signs. A little map on there to give you an idea of where to throw would have been really nice on many occasions. Some indication of where the next teebox was would have been really nice to have as well. Also, I mentioned the lack of defined fairways on a few holes in the cons. Maybe that is supposed to add to the difficulty (and it certainly does) but it does so at the expense of making the hole less fun/interesting.

So.. the question comes down to should you play this course. There are a lot of faults to be found but if you generally enjoy wooded courses, it's probably worth your time to stop. I doubt the course will blow you away but it won't necessarily leave you disappointed. If you tend to gravitate towards more open courses then I'd definitely take a pass on this course. There are a few holes you might enjoy but they're probably not worth a long trip.

If you only have time for one course in this area, I'd recommend driving the 17 extra miles to Pike Lake. If you don't feel like the extra drive, this certainly isn't a bad course and is quite good in a lot of respects, just don't go in expecting an amazing AAA course and you won't leave disappointed.
