Great course in an area that doesn't have a whole lot of courses nearby. I grew up in this area and would have never guessed that one day disc golf would come to Morris County. Great to have a course 10 minutes away from where I grew up. Now when I visit relatives I will have a great place to play.

Signage from basket to tee could be a little bit more conspicuously marked. Small yellow arrow markers and yellow squares nailed to trees are little bit hard to spot, but not that bad. We were able to find the next tee without too terribly much trouble.
No concrete tees. Natural tees. I'm sure that is just since this course is new and the local club is probably trying to raise funds for concrete tees.

Can't wait to come back and play this one again. Thanks to the local club and parks department for putting this one in.

*placement of water hazards in relation to greens. i love the risk water adds to the 6, 7, 8, 14, 15, & 17 greens.
*teesigns on every hole (except red tees). there is also a course map for the Blue & White Tees on UDisc!
*course flow. course designers did well balancing course flow between open & wooded areas. front 9 returns to parking lot.
*aesthetics. course offers scenic views with memorable shots (hole 5 blue is an awesome top of the world drive. hole 14 is the same with a wooded vibe.)

*the natural teepees are being resurfaced with retaining logs & fresh stonedust. when all teepees have been framed with fixtures & dusted, cons will be tough to come by for this course

after seeing the progress of the course & club after year one, the future is bright for Greystone. the course has improved after the recent removal of trees from select fairways (notably hole 11 & 14), and is definitely coming into form. it is the perfect addition to an area much in need of courses, and will teach players the game for many years to come.

Greystone has 18 Discatcher baskets with Blue, White, and Red tees that serves a challenge for different skill levels and variety of shots. There is a exceptional use of the elevation, water and woods. A whole crew of 10-15 people come to the course several times a week to check on holes. I love that the holes are all wooded, but none of them are unfair and tight. A pro would probably shoot under here. It is still a challenge, and challenge is also good. It is also a great use of property. It is a long course and it is not crammed into a little space. Greystone rewards good shots and punishes bad shots so you have to bring your A game when you play.

*There are gravel tee pads but course maintainers are working leveling them out each day
*The tee signs are laminated paper stapled to a wooden square on a wooden stick in the ground. First of all, the sticks are going to fall out soon. Second of all, The tee signs will rip or fall off. Lastly, they will get damaged by rain.
I think that both the gravel and the tee signs fit the course in a weird way though
*Hole 10 is sort of a luck involved shot, where you throw under the tree line and over water and hope your discs skips up for you to have a birdie chance (or a 5 if you hit the basket and roll down the hill, which happens many times)

In a couple of years, this course will be supreme, but it still needs to grow in a bit. Hopefully some of the flaws will be fixed soon and then this course has a possibility of being in the top 25-50 courses in the country.

Challenging 18 hole wooded course (except for two open holes) across from the old Greystone Psychiatric Hospital. Both a blue tee (long) and white tee (short) are offered with several red (rec) tees on some of the holes. Tee pads are of adequate size and there are laminated, colored signs with par, distance and flight path at each hole. Small yellow "next tee" arrows assist with navigation. Course makes very good use of water and elevation on multiple holes. The mid-part of the course is especially strong: holes 7 and 8 (short anhyzer and hyzer shots respectively to a basket near a stream), hole 9 (long shot over a large pond from the blue tee) and hole 10 (mid-range distance shot over the stream to a basket enclosed by a stone wall) are all excellent. Holes 14 (long downhill shot then left turn to a basket by the creek) and hole 16 (nice uphill anhyzer shot) set you up for two nice field holes to end your round. Course design and layout is well-conceived with good lines and pin placements. Pathways are getting worn in nicely with continued play.

As others have stated, most of the cons are all reflective of this course being newly built. The tee pads (loose stone) are OK but should be eventually upgraded, as should the tee signs. A few fairways need to be tweaked: 15 is a very good hole but you're throwing blind over a huge downed tree with no true flight path. Disc loss off hole 9 blue tee is a very distinct possibility- and is an awfully tough shot to land safely if you don't have the big arm. Parking during the winter months is limited to the grass area outside the main lot. There are no glaring course weaknesses which should prevent you from playing here.

Greystone Woods represents another quality course to appear on the NJ DG scene in the last 3 years and an essential venue to the Morris County area. A wonderful experience playing here. Greystone could quite possibly become the best course in NJ when permanent tees and signs are installed. This course offers great balance and variety. And while it is tough, it is not oppressive, rewarding great shots with birdie opportunities. Nothing seems repetitive. The property is magnificent, with the spooky main building of the old hospital (unfortunately slated for demolition) looming in the distance. Jeff, Eric and the many volunteers are to be given huge thanks for such a fine addition to the sport. The extra half-star represents the work put into this venue and the promise it holds. Can't wait to come back!

There are two teeboxes per hole that each offer a unique experience. Discatchers are in fantastic shape and the property is gorgeous. This course has a variety of shots that will make you use every disc you have, from tight hyzer lines to flicks to uphill/downhill bombs,and tunnel shots, this course really does have it all. Water is in play on a variety of holes so be careful! Also, contrary to belief, the course does NOT cross over itself. I can see how a first timer may think this, but don't worry, navigation is simple and you won't be walking unknowingly across any fairways.

The cons of this course are simply reflective of a brand new course. Teepads could be better (and will be). Unfortunately, there are no amenities on the property but there are garbage cans, bathrooms, etc. across the street. The designers are still toying with/solidifying where a few of the awkward teeboxes will go (Hole 10 for instance).

Greystone is a course worth traveling to play, without a doubt. Hole 1 is a great start to the course that plays through somewhat tight woods. Holes 2 and 3 are long, uphill par 4's or 5's that will punish you if you throw off fairway. 4 and 5 are fun, downhill shots. 6 and 7 are lefty friendly holes that have fast greens sloping into water. You'll want to birdie 8 and probably 9. 10 is a bit awkward but they're working on it. 11 is a long straight par 4. 12 is an uphill birdie opportunity. 13 is lefty friendly. 14 is an awesome par 4 with a great downhill tee shot that turns to a super tight fairway. 15 is a lefty friendly downhill par 3 with a creek in play. 16 is like throwing up a wall and is a lot of fun. 17 is my favorite hole of the course, especially from the Whites. Do not air out your drive or you're going swimming. 18 is a perfect finish with a huge downhill air opportunity.

Excellent flow of the course and variety of challenges from hole to hole. Two loops of holes back to parking lot. Beautiful park and course.

I played this course the first weekend it opened and as such the vast majority of my cons are simply from being a brand new course and I'm sure things have already improved and get better with more time. There was a fair amount poison ivy when I played, but the grass hadn't been mowed which I'm sure would get rid of it with regular mowing in the field. The woods were in much better shape as far as the rough which was surprising. Lacked signage and navigation was a bit rough even with map, although once paths get beaten in I think it will be much easier. Hole 7 and 8 lack a legit fairway IMO, 7 is pure pine plinko and 8 calls for a ridiculously tight line shape with the basket right by the water.

Not really a con, but it was a little weird passing the tee for hole 9 to get to hole 1. There were a number of non-disc golfers roaming the woods/fairways and fishing. Course might be a bit too tough for novice disc golfers.

Greystone Woods is not just going to be one of the premier courses in New Jersey, but one of the best courses around the region. The property is pretty ideal for disc golf with the water, elevation, woods, open space, and natural beauty. I was reminded a lot of Iron Hill in DE while playing here, but the holes here are quite different and unique, I'd say Greystone has a higher fun factor with more diversity. Greystone also has a couple gut wrenching shots with water hazards.

I played the long tees and starting at hole 1 I wasn't quite sure what kind of course I was about to play, but I was exited and with good reason. Hole 1 is a fairly innocuous par 3, a 270' BH hyzer through some woods and sloping elevation left to right and basket behind a ridgeline into the open. It's a tough 2 and not that hard to bogey. Next up is hole 2, I'm playing the course blind and can't see the basket from the tee but I see a fairway through the woods and throw a Boss as far as possible uphill through the gap. I finally see the basket as I approach my drive and I'm looking at still another big driver shot to get near the basket, wow this is a big uphill par 5! Next I walk into the the huge open area in the middle of the woods and find the next tee in the middle, and I spot the fairway going into the woods and uphill again. I huck my Boss up the gap and again looking at another driver approach to tough par 4. Next is hole 4, another par 4 but this time it's big downhill bomb through heavy woods, very fun hole. Next up hole 5 I walk back into the open area to tee off again and this time is a fun and tricky downhill par 3 that goes back into the woods and you want to make inside the gap. Hole 6 is a downhill wooded par 3. Hole 7 is a downhill par 3 with pine trees providing a thrilling dose of plinko to the basket on a fast sloping green. Hole 8 is another heavily wooded downhill par 3 with the basket next to the creek. How did they get so many downhill shots in a row!? So after hole 8 you have completed the first loop of holes, you have already been put through the ringer, right?

Next up is maybe the signature hole, good ole #9 a reachable par 4. The long and short tees are vastly different shots. Playing the long tee you are overlooking the massive pond that sits between you and basket and the line of woods around the pond ready to knock your disc into it if you miss the landing area. This hole is probably more bark than bite, it's thrilling and intimidating! Next is hole 10 a short par 3 overshooting the dam with the basket on a very fast slope and trees around, another fun hole. Next is hole 11, a 534' downhill par 4 through heavy woods, I managed to have a decent look at a deuce, but my putt rimmed around the basket. Hole 12 is winding par 4 through the woods with some rolling elevation, another solid hole. Hole 13 is a par 3 straight tunnel shot with a protected and tricky basket. Hole 14 is downhill par 4 through heavy woods. Hole 15 is a short downhill wooded par 3 with the basket across the creek. Hole 16 is a short par 3 uphill shot through woods with the basket around a fast green. Alright now you have made out of Dante's 16 holes of wooded hell and back into the light of day and you will hear the angels singing hallelujah for the last two wide open holes and both happen to play downhill. Hole 17 changes quite a bit from the long and short tee. From the long tee it's a long par 5 that starts out from a tunnel of woods into the open and then turns to the left and there is water to the left and the basket is almost on a peninsula and guarded by trees to the sides. The short tee is a straight downhill bomb, but the water is just behind the basket to the left and you have the basket on a peninsula with the woods guarding shots from the left or right. Hole 18 is par 4 downhill bomb with the basket nestled into the right side of the woodline. Fantastic way to finish the beast of a course. So if you are into this kind of masochistic disc golf, this is the course for you and me!

Outstanding property very well utilized by the design team of Eric Robbins and Jeff Mahler. The use of large mature forest, rock outcroppings, elevation, scenic views over the two ponds is very well done.
Each hole plays unique and the course plays fun yet challenging - a tough balance. Two sets of tees for White and Blue skill levels play quite different (and they should), offering the player an option to choose how hard of a course they desire to play on a given day & allows tournaments to separate divisions and keep up pace an even of play.
Inside the forest offers some great throwing lanes, and the designers nailed many of them!! Love the challenge to shape you shots, there are great fairways, and tough rough. Not much chance of losing a disc in the forest as there is minimal dense undergrowth.
Awesome stone work!!! One of the baskets sets atop just an amazing rock foundation to level off a small landing zone on a very steep hill!!! Hats off, as some of you know, I like stone work and this example is first class. I imagine there might be more in store along this front...

Yes the tees are lose gravel, BUT they have plans of two sets of all concrete tees. While the tees are a con now, they will be a pro when completed.
Also, the rough is rough, long grass can eat discs in the field holes, and there are some stickers in the holes at the edge of the forest.
I have no doubt that this will be cleaned up over time, and have heard some of the plans for fixing this. Its new, give the course a chance to get finished. Overall, I see the cons list shrinking as the volunteers and county have time to complete the course.

Potential, potential, potential...
Amazing landscape and design of the course itself lends to some outstanding potential over time, just like any other course - they take man hours, sweat, blood and tears to realize the designer's goals. I can't wait for this course to continue its growth. Its a two hour drive for me, and will be well worth the trip.
I applaud the designs and volunteers, the work already poured into the course is far beyond what many courses require to get completely installed. Just making some of the tee pads level was monumental work, so recognize that and appreciate what is done already.
As the course matures, work continues, and tee pads get poured, I see my rating of this course just continuing to rise.

The course is very challenging. Rewards good shots and punishes bad shots. You will use almost every disc in your bag and a variety of shots. Hazards come in to play on about half the holes. Good use of elevation to create interesting shots.

The course is brand new so there is an ongoing effort to clean up decades on trash. It is miles beyond what it was just a few months ago. There are many rocks along the walkways and fairways that can lead to a very fatiguing day. The rough is nearly impossible to navigate. Make sure you have a spotter to prevent the loss of discs. Sharp thorny thorns are thorny. Not the typical thorns that are easily visible but the tiny ones that surprise you and sting a little. Teepads can be inconsistent but that comes with funding and time.

This course will get a 5 after a year or so of regular maintenance and cleanup. The layout is amazing. The challenges of a new course is getting it seasoned so everyone can play without dealing with the little things. Jeff Mahler and Eric Robbins should be proud of the course they created.

-It's a very challenging course that can frustrate players of all skill levels
-By presenting an intense challenge, your game will improve rapidly.

-The course is new, so the paths between holes are still getting worn in, and if you get off track, can be a little tricky to get back.
-Long drives make you want to really rip it on your drive, but the ocean of trees and branches are liable to put a healthy ding in your disc.
-Thorn bushes are brutal, and everywhere.
-The larger water hazards on 9 and 17 are deep enough that you'll never see your disc again
-Debris on 16 and 17 gives you the impression you're playing in a landfull

The course sits on a great plot of land that makes the course very fun to play. It is a very mature forest so there is little underbrush and few low limbs in the way. Which also makes finding disc rather easy while in the wooded sections. The course has nice variety of different types of hole. Including about equal up/down hill shots, as well as about equal L to R and R to L shots. The is also a beautiful over lake shot on the longer tee of hole 9.

I don't have many cons about the course, but right now there is a high risk of loosing a disc on holes 17 and 18 due to some high and very thick grass as of 8/10/14. (But this can be managed if a spotter is down the fairway). As the course is very new I am sure that this will be taken care of as time progresses.

The course has been playable for a couple weeks now but, the course had the official opening day on 8/10/14.

Water comes into play on a number of holes, but besides 9 long it is just a small stream and disc can be recovered easily.

As this is a wooded course, it is going to be a bit more technical course then one that has open field shots. I personally really like this course in the about 10 times I have played it I still find each hole enjoyable every time.
