2nd home course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 8, 2019 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- location. minutes from OSU. Makes for a great lunch break course for me. disc shop just down the road on Riverside is a bonus.

- i personally find the park to be aesthetically pleasing. The scioto along the western edge of the park brings ducks, geese, herons and other wildlife. Even though you're pinned in between the river and a major road, I find it a peaceful distraction, especially around 11am on weekdays.

- The course used to have a lot more trees. Emerald Ash Borer devastated the park, and the City cut down a great deal of trees, which has really affected the challenges presented. New trees have been planted, and in about 10 years, it will be more interesting.

- practice basket available at the entrance, plenty of parking.

- I think this is overall a good course for my skill level (beginner rec) with enough challenge to make me think of the different shots I can use and apply basic strategy. holes 8 and 18 give me a little panic playing close to the river, but the rest of the course is very forgiving.

-local club does a good job of changing the pin placements from time to time. when 10 is up in the woods, it's a little harder to find if you are new to the course.

- local players are extremely friendly, happy to let people play though.

Cons:

- lots of dog walkers. some are more oblivious than others, so you need to be aware of others. Also watch your step, lots of dog poop, especially near the parking lot.

- Erosion is a large factor on this course. The Scioto floods a few times a year, enough to overtake holes 6,7, 8, 17 and 18 especially. If you see this, there is also a good chance that there has been sewage overflow as well, so personal health risks are a factor. Play smart, and avoid the water during floods.

- 6,7,8, 17, and 18 all play really close to the river. I've also found a lot of discs thrown from 4 that hyzer out into the river around the 18 tee.

- When the river is high, OB means your disc is likely gone. Lots of beginners means lots of missing discs, and several people walk this course and the river to retrieve discs. One or two are honest and will call a number, but most of them end up at Play it Again Sports.

- If you're not used to the course layout, it can be confusing as to which basket you're aiming for. From tee 5, you're looking at 16. 5 is buried in the woods to the right about 10 meters out of sight. the map attached to this page is extremely helpful.

Other Thoughts:

As a developing beginner, I can appreciate this course. It's a great course for building confidence.

For 18 holes, it plays quickly. I can run through the course with just a Comet in less than an hour, which is perfect for lunch breaks.

Lots of comments that this is crowded course. going at lunch on weekdays, I've maybe had to share the entire course with one person max. Afternoons and evenings are quite busy.

This course has high sentimental value, as it's the first course I ever played while still in college as it was near my girlfriend's apartment. 12 years later, I decided to actually get into the sport and it's a nice trip down memory lane.

Classic Par 54 (+2) 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 1, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ Griggs is a classic park style course that plays along the banks of the river. It's tailored to intermediate level players with a few scary shots along the water.

+ I'm a fan of simple, easy to follow courses. I'd rather play a course like this rather than an overcomplicated course with four different pin positions, 100 sets of tees, crazy twists and turns, etc. Griggs is straight forward with one tee and one basket, perfect for a casual round.

+ All tees are concrete and in very good shape. The tee markers don't have maps or anything, but they serve their purpose and are easy to spot.

+ Surprisingly there's a decent amount of distance variation. Holes range from about 180' all the way up to the 600' monster for #18.

+ My two favorites were probably #4 and #18. I just liked the pin position for 4, backed up against a huge rock. You can barely see the basket on the approach because of how dark the green is.

+ #18 was almost 600' along the water. The sign reads "Go Big or Go Fishin'" in sharpie, and I was the latter of the two options. My brand new Escape is on its way to the ocean.

+ Parking lot is massive, and the kiosk is decent. There's a restroom and practice basket near the start: Makes an 18 Hole loop from start to finish.

Cons:

- Griggs isn't the most challenging course in the world. There's not much shot shaping so it may get easy to get bored of the somewhat repetitive nature of the loop.

- If you don't know the people on the course with you, I bet you could describe them to someone better than their own mother after the round. Just about every hole plays right next to another, especially after the first 3 holes.

- Baskets catch decent, but they're rusty and may be hard to spot at times.

Other Thoughts:

Griggs is a Columbus Classic that makes for a decent casual round. While most won't find a ton of challenge, there's enough mature trees and water to keep it interesting. Overall, just a decent 18 holer.

Cons:

Park can be crowded with walkers down the path that lines the course. Simple long narrow course that you play down and back. Very open not many obstacles.

Other Thoughts:

Very nice disc golf course in a nice location not too far from city. Hard to not love the site of my first ace! Hole 14

Riverside "Drive" 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 27, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

1) Concrete tees
2) Multiple pin positions
3) Good mixture of lefty and righty holes
3) Highlight holes: 18

Cons:

1) Not a lot of obstacles to shoot around (trees cut down)
2) Crowded with pedestrians and dg traffic during warmer months
3) MUDDY when wet
4) Tee signs need updated
5) Navigation issues - bring map. Eg. ,hole 5's basket in B position in woods to right - visible basket is 16, not 5.

Other Thoughts:

Griggs is sandwiched in between Riverside Drive and the Scioto River on a relatively small rectangular piece of land. It plays in a giant loop, so by the time you get to hole 10, you are far away from your car. It is flat for the most part, with a few slight elevation changes on a handful of holes. The land is dotted with mature trees, but for the most part, it is open.

About 5 years ago, the course received a makeover which greatly enhanced its appeal for the intermediate to advanced player. New target positions were created, and for the most part, the course has stayed in this layout ever since. The tee signs need to be updated to match the new positions though. If you haven't been here before, you should bring a map because there are a few holes that might trip you up. (See above for example).

The course has an OB road that follows the length of the rectangle, creating some more challenge on quite a few holes. There is a nice mix of lefty and righty holes. I would say that the lefty holes are truly lefty holes, not only because of the shape of the hole, but because of the OB road on the left of the fairway...holes 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 and 18 come to mind.

There are a few ace runs and some long holes to navigate as well. Since some of the targets have been moved, the narrow strip of woods in between the course and Riverside Drive is being used to create more obstacles to shoot through/around. The river comes into play on a few holes as well...7, 8, 17, 18, which adds some challenge.

The course is (or was) fun to shoot, but unfortunately, they cut down a lot of the trees on the course (they were infected with the ash borer) from what I heard. The last time I played there was last April and they had already cut down 3 or 4, but there were a lot more that were marked for termination. I haven't been back because I've heard it isn't nearly as much fun now. I'll update my review when I go back this year.

That said, the Columbus Flyers have done what they can to prepare the course for the future by planting new trees...and the placement of those trees will make for a very challenging course someday. Until then, though, the course is in a transitional period.

Because this is the only truly challenging course in the area, it draws a lot of dg traffic, so be prepared to do a lot of waiting (or playing through) during the summer months. And be prepared to wait for walkers (not zombies) and joggers too, as a lot of people come here for R&R as well.

One more thing...this is one of the worst courses to play when the ground is wet. The ground has a lot of dirt exposed and this dirt is very clingy and clay-like when it gets wet. It will stick to your shoes like glue and you will gain 5 pounds in 1 hole because of it. Bring an extra pair of shoes to change into when you're done or drive your old car to the course if it's springtime, or any time you think the ground may be wet.

For now, I give this course a 3, but that is based upon my memory of it before the tree massacre.

Good Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 24, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Concrete tee pads
-Distance for each hole
-Lots of trees
-Good variation of throws

Cons:

-Trees are slowly being cut down because of the emerald ash borer.
-You can easily lose discs in the bushes
-No maps on holes

Other Thoughts:

I probably play this course the most because it is the closest to my house. Good variation of throws. You can throw a 2 on most all holes or ace. Holes 4 and 5 are much harder now that they are more tucked back in the woods making it almost impossible to ace. Trees are being cut down because of the ash borer but they are planting new ones. Course may be bad for awhile once all the trees are cut down because there is a lot of them. The bushes make it easy to lose discs because they have a canopy which they land on and you can't see your disc. There are a few holes in which water is in play. When the water is down you can find discs. Don't come on Wednesday nights unless you wanna play in a tournament with the columbus flyers, they take up the whole course.

Has Great Potential 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 21, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Adequate teepads and baskets.

-OB road makes your round more exciting if you choose to use it.

-Although the tee signs were primitive, they were all there.

-A block away from Disc Golf Mart, where you can grab scorecards.

-Challenging holes, but not frustrating. There were newbies and experienced players in my group today and no one thought the course was too easy/hard.

-Great use of the woods for protected baskets.

Cons:

-I've experienced a "fishy" smell when playing near the creek.

-It is very difficult to find the course the first time, as you don't see much of the course from the road.

-The course gets muddy and eventually floods while it's raining (See http://www.dgcoursereview.com....php?t=30456)

-Parking lot has lots of pot holes

Other Thoughts:

If this course was fixed up a little, It could easily be rated a 4. It is a refreshing change from the rest of the Columbus scene, although I would not put it on the same level as the Brent Hambrick course.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 9, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The course has been updated to make it a little tougher and conceal some of the pin placements further into the trees. It's a nice park with big mature trees and it's right off of a main road in the city. It's real easy to get to.

Cons:

It's always busy. There isn't enough shot diversity, nearly every hole forces a certain shot. The first (roughly nine holes) go in one direction and the next (roughly 9) come back the other way so the shots all go left to right and then vice versa. The course is heavily travelled and it shows. There seems to always be a problem with people breaking limbs to improve a shot or manipulating the course. A lot of the holes are straightforward and forgettable.

Other Thoughts:

This is a course we tried to play every once in a while because it's so close but other course play faster and better in the area. It's just alright.

Convenient and Clean 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 13, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Well maintained grass
-Local disc club is proactive in upgrading course (ie cement pads)
-Shortest drive for 18 holes on the west side
-Random doubles twice weekly always have a good draw
-Good for beginners (especially if you have to loan your discs to them)
-Non golfing pedestrian traffic is thin and usually aware of the activities around
-Locals have pro pads for a few holes (not cement when I played last)

Cons:

-Straight and narrow park lends to a lack of hole diversity
-Flat
-Hole 8 can be swallowed by the river after heavy showers
-Usually crowded

Other Thoughts:

I played this course consistently out of convenience 5 years and it grew on me the more I played it. I always pay it a visit when I am in town. Occasionally the river can make the park smell awful since the Scioto is not the cleanest river.

High Exposure 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 14, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

+ Visible/accessible off a major road
+ nice tees with benches
+ most holes require line placement to avoid trees
+ right to left, straight on, and left to right shots all needed
+ Pretty good flow that has you finish near where you started

Cons:

- Signage needs updated
- layout means that a few holes have fairways and baskets that get very close to other holes' fairways and baskets
- many baskets missing number plates

Other Thoughts:

Got to love that this course introduces so many people to disc golf as its the only course in the area that can be seen and accessed from a major road (33/Riverside Dr.) Even if it isn't necessarily the best course for a beginner to learn on.

I quite enjoy the first 3 holes as they feature elevation changes and a healthy amount of trees to avoid. After that though none of the holes strike me as all that memorable until you get back around to 18. Not to say they are bad holes by any means ... just that they aren't anything special. The park is pretty darn nice and well shielded by trees from 33. The river adds a nice scenic touch but never really comes into play and is also pretty well guarded by trees.

My two main gripes are with the signs and the layout of a few holes in the middle. The signs don't share any information on the layout of the hole other than what number it is and the distance. However most of the baskets have been relocated so the distances are no longer accurate. Also once you get past hole 4 a good number of baskets are in view from the tees and while its mostly logical which one you are supposed to be shooting at, if you haven't checked the map or have someone who knows the course with you, you don't know for sure as many of those baskets lack number plates and the signs don't show you what kind of shot it is. Also, some of the holes in the middle run too close to each other for my taste. But not much to do about it as every bit of land available for the course has been utilized and there just aren't enough trees to make every single hole feel secluded from the others.

Overall its a quality course and worth playing if you're in the area. I can't honestly say its one of my favorites but if someone asked me if I wanted to go get a round in at Griggs I'd go without hesitation.

The Digs at Griggs 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 2, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice park along the Scioto River, well mowed/maintained complete with signs on most holes and benches. Terrain and nice, big deciduous trees make for some attractive and fairly interesting holes. Some of the holes run along a busy road (Riverside Rd.) but the trees that line the road are perfect for blocking discs, nevertheless I managed to grip lock a midrange completely over the 4 lane highway into the opposite ditch. Fortunately a passerby courteously informed me that "I suck" as he drove by as I was unaware. Hey, I hadn't played in a while, give a brother a break.

Baskets are in nice shape and there are plenty of other discgolfers to hang out with and the Scioto is a nice sized river. Occasional boulder and ridge add to the quality but holes are pretty open with the occasional old growth tree dotting the fairway. Great big cement tees with plenty of benches make this a chill course. Trash cans too.

Cons:

Pars are assigned poorly. There were more than a few par 4's that were ~ 300' or less which led to a -10 my 2nd round (I'm not that great, Int. level). All holes should have been a par 3 except for maybe #18 which had some length. The biggest con is safety related because the course is very popular and the holes are really close to each other which led to some hectic rounds. Hole variety is fairly lacking, they tend to be either straight ahead, and straight and slightly left/right. Multiple pins in sight can lead to confusion as to what basket you are throwing to on a few holes. I didn't see a bathroom but you're not far from civilization.

Other Thoughts:

This course is a little too crowded for my tastes, I'd have to hit it up in the morning. It's popularity isn't its fault though. It is a very charming park but the close proximity of fairways and tees next to each other can make it a chore when you have to do safety checks every hole. It doesn't require a great amount of skill to score well either and that makes it fun but also tedious after a while. I'd play it again though.

Fun fast-paced course in a nice park setting. Open but has some well placed trees to make it a bit more interesting. Easy to find and close to quite a few other courses.

Cons:

Crowded with a chance of power-walkers. A lot of the wooded area is full of a canopy style tree that can hide your disc up in the leaves

Other Thoughts:

A great course to hit up if your playing Hambrick. And its always a good confidence builder if your playing the course par. In my opinion this is a par 3 course. The holes are all fairly open but do require a good bit of accuracy. With some good/hidden pin placement you will need to avoid some well placed lumber to hit a good approach shot. Always a good time and you can get a round in in less than hour

Pros:

Easy to Navigate
Recent upgrades, almost all of them are an improvement
Well Kept

Cons:

Crowded
Most holes are similar, open field and flat with some trees in the way.
The Park Floods a lot in the spring

Other Thoughts:

When I try to describe this course I make it sound bad. But nothing could be further from the truth. I like this place a lot. It is mostly open and flat so it would not be the kind of course I typically enjoy, but I like playing here I'm just not sure exactly why

Most of the hole are in the 250-300 range so you don't have to have a huge arm to do well. You should have no problem finding the next hole, (you can see the next 7 holes most of the time) The Park itself is pretty nice, free of trash and always mowed. Being right next to the river you would think there would be a bug problem but that's not the case, I've never had a problem.

More than once I've seen the course flooded when the river rises. I've even been there and seen hole 18 completely under water.

It's a popular course and it's usually crowded so be ready for lines. Also they have tournaments there on Wednesdays at 6pm and Sunday at 11am. Open to any skill level.

Also just down the Street there is a Disc Golf Mart. It's easily the best Disc Golf store in the Columbus area. I always buy my stuff there. Lets try to keep the owner in business. he seems like a nice guy.

Griggs - Renovated 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 21, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

+ I consider Griggs Reservoir an excellent course for those learning to play the game. It provides the opportunity for the new and inexperienced player to hone their skills without an obsessive amount of difficult shots along the way. This is not to say, however, that the experienced player should skip this course. While it is not at the level of other area courses, it can still provide a challenge and can require the use of various shots (and an excellent spot for practicing hyzers).

+ The parking situation is excellent. In three years of playing here, I have never experienced any trouble.

+ Concrete tees are a bonus and the course itself is very well maintained.

+ Even during the peak weekday evening hours, the a round can be played in less than ninety minutes.

Cons:

- Lack of facilities.

- Can be crowed during the weeknights and weekends. Along a popular walking/bike route and pedestrians can be a problem.

- The course can feel overly-compacted in some areas.

- No practice basket (though it is common to see people using the #2 basket to warm-up).

Other Thoughts:

While not a championship caliber course, Griggs is a great place for recreational disc golf. After the first three holes, the terrain is flat and easily walked. Be aware of the river height as it can/will come into play on multiple holes.

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 5, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I've played this course many times in visits to Columbus (I'm from Chicago) and have to say that the new pin placements have definitely improved the course. Almost every hole with the exception of 3,10, and 18 were to my memory longer and more challenging than the previous pin placements. I really like the baskets tucked up in the bushes. It means a well placed drive is essential to ensure a 3 and only great drives will get the 2.

This is a great course to get out and play an easy round with little elevation change and relatively short holes. Just a walk in the park.

Cons:

There's only so much land to work with and the course designers have done a nice job, but more variety would be nice. The tees don't always point toward the basket which is a little akward. Some of the tee signs have been updated with a sharpie but many show the distance for the "A" position only. I'm sure that will change with time.
Course was crowded on Sunday afternoon, just be prepared.

Other Thoughts:

Definitely worth the stop, especially with the new variety. Check out the disc store before your round and test out new discs. Great course for beginner to intermediate players.

Nice neighborhood course. 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 16, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a good neighborhood course.

It is laid out well considering the shape of the land they are using. The park is well maintained and does offer some amenities.

This is the type of course to spend time with the family or friends and shoot the breeze. It offers enough for a experienced player but allows a beginner enough grace to enjoy the game and learn.

Mostly an open course with some big trees. A couple of blind shots that require some finesse. It is marked well and the pads are concrete which is nice.

Parking was not a problem.

Cons:

It was busy the day I played but not bad enough to slow my game or have to deal with rude behavior.

The course is not the easiest place to find. The park is real long and it is at one end.

A map is needed in order to find the tee on the blind baskets and determining which tee was next on a couple the map is needed.

Some of the fairways come close to tees. A little off on a drive at 9 and it could go flying at someone teeing off on 12. This also happens on several others.

Need something in place to tell which basket you are throwing to. Whether it is A or B.

Other Thoughts:

If you just want to go out and throw some and its close by it is a good place to go.

A good place to learn.
