Course doesn't live up to the epic name

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 30, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Good course infrastructure (pads,baskets,signs,etc.)
- Small amount of elevation used very well
- A par 4 hole and many longer par 3 holes for big drives
- Also some shorter par 3 holes so some variety here in terms of distance
- The river is in play on many holes (could be a con depending on who you ask)
- Easy navigation for first timers
- Loved the suspended basket

Cons:

- Most holes are too open for my taste
- Lots of holes in the ground make for some treacherous walking
- Some of the fairways have fairly long grass making you watch your tee shot extra close
- Lots of opportunities out here to lose a disc in bushes, grass, or water

Other Thoughts:

This one feels kind of meh. Had a really good time here with our group but that wasn't because the course is awesome. It's certainly not bad or anything just not really my style or what I look for in a disc golf course. That being said it's the only game in town other than Cross Creek (which is far superior IMO) and I've played far worse. I'd say if you're already in the area this place is a worth a stop but only after Cross Creek.

Pros:

Hole in the Sky DGC is a rather unique course. It has plenty of water in play in the form of the river and a couple little irrigation ditches. There's a couple island holes in 2 and 18, a hanging basket on hole 4 and a big long par 4 on hole 5. The rest of the holes are more straightforward but have a little bit of variation among them, not all wide open shots.

The baskets here are yellow Latitude 64 Pros. These are solid baskets. I've only played on these a handful of times before and I don't mind them. They stand out nicely and catch pretty well. Two to three pin placements per hole and a single basket on most. Holes 1 and 2 had two baskets for whatever reason.

Concrete tees on every hole. These are nicely done. Level, grippy and plenty large enough. I think there were three holes that had two tees, the rest just a single pad. No complaints with these.

The design is pretty well done for the amount of space they had available to them. They did a good job of fitting 18 holes in here tbh. The flow is pretty straightforward. We didn't have to use the map more than a couple times. They used the few wooded areas pretty well. There's not much for trees out here but what is out here is incorporated for the most part.

The tee signs are really nice. There's a detailed hole layout map showing all the pin placements and any applicable OB, hole # and distance to all the different baskets. There's also bag holders on the sign post and best of all a metal circle with all the different placement on it. The letter on the top under the "today" placard is the current basket placement. This was very helpful since not all baskets are visible from the tee. Very nice signage.

Cons:

Very real potential for lost discs out here. The rough on the first couple holes is pretty gnarly. Couple that with the river and creeks and there's a real good chance of coming out of here with a lighter bag.

There's some walking trails that wind around the course. Be aware of pedestrians. A few of the trails aren't obvious from certain tees either so pay extra attention to the signs.

A few of the holes towards the end of the course feel exactly the same. Holes 10, 13 and 16 to be exact. Straight wide open shots crossing the same open field.

Hole 1 is kind of a joke currently. There's a hallway sized "gap" up the middle, but the only realistic play is going up and over. Not a good hole.

There's tons of what I'm assuming are prairie dog tunnels all over the place. I almost tripped in these a number of times. The course could just as easily be called Hole in the Ground.

Other Thoughts:

Even with all the cons I listed it's still a pretty decent course. Not a must play or anything but you can certainly do a whole lot worse than this one. I'd recommend bringing a few discs you don't mind losing. Only a minute or so off the highway so this one makes for a good place to stretch your legs if you're on a long trip through the area. Not terrible, not great.

Real good start. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 12, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Spectacular scenery (mountains and river). Easy navigation by looking at the tee signs. Variety of distances. Special features to increase interest. Quick access off I-70.

Cons:

Prairie dog holes. A lot of playing across one big field. I hear the course is still being reconfigured to find the best layout, so not all the tees are permanent yet and the numbers on the baskets don't match the hole numbers. This is not a big problem, because the tees are well-marked and level, and the tee signs have maps that show where to play.

Other Thoughts:

When I first saw the location of this course, I thought that, to people living in the mountains of Colorado, a flat open field must be the most precise and rare type of terrain. Perhaps they put the course here as a break from all those huge downhill bombers they do everyday in their backyard.
But, then I played the course and found they were doing everything they can to squeeze every bit of fun from the land they have to work with.
Also, they're doing the little extras that make all the difference. For example, the artificial "island" is marked with string and has a drop zone. As many holes as possible play along the edge where the trees and river are. One hole has a hanging basket - and it's hanging on its own zip line!
You'll get the feeling the course is improving right before your eyes. If you're going by on I-70, play it and update the reviews.
