Devilishly Ingenious Design 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 13, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The course designers did a great job of creating an 18 hole track with only 9 baskets and utilizing two very distinct tees in most cases to make the holes seem utterly different (on all but #4/13 which is only 20 feet longer and 30 feet left, which doesn't change the angle at all, and #8/17, which is merely 100 feet longer and takes out of play the trees that make the shorter location more interesting).

#1/10 is a brilliant design, utilizing a single tree on each tee to force the player into an uncomfortable line.

#3/12 should be easily reachable in two for a player who can throw 280-300, but a slope forces shots to the left and makes the hole play much longer (another reviewer said this is the only elevation, but #9/18 has a fair elevation that must be calculated to throw an accurate distance).

#5/14 is my 3rd favorite hole, owing to it being lefty friendly and having a nicely guarded green.
#9/18 is my 2nd favorite, owing to the elevation and a magnificent use of the trees to obstruct the tee shot and force an angle on a player.
#7/16 is the signature hole, with the most magnificent guarded green on the course (and one of the best I've seen anywhere).

Cons:

The tee pads are far too short, but I see this often on courses with shorter distance to force a player into fewer step and shorter throws. I'm not sure I agree with this tactic, but it's OK in this case for the most part.

#13 and #17 could use a re-design to change the angle more significantly and truly make them seem like different holes.

The sign after #2 is ridiculous. You can't see it until you've exited the green to the path and look BACKWARDS. Then, you see an arrow pointing perpendicularly across the path that it SEEMS to be telling you to take. The roadway is so narrow that you might mistake it--running parallel to the arrow--for the path you should take.

This sign should either be removed or placed on the front side of that post with the arrow pointing parallel to the path, so that a player sees it when exiting the green. Other than that error, the course is super simple to follow and needs no signage.

Other Thoughts:

A lot of signs were missing/stolen when I played.

Horicon Resident 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 27, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

1. Good flow to the course overall.

2. Great course for beginners and intermediate players.

3. Great park, right by the Rock River.

4. Nice baskets and signage.

5. Fairly low traffic on weeknights, which means you can reasonably play two rounds (18 holes) in about an hour.

6. Each hole presents it's own set of challenges (Hole #2 excluded).

Cons:

1. Could probably use a couple of "Next Tee This Way" signs.

2. Agree with the reviewer above that Hole #2 is a snooze. That said, it's probably the most "ace-able" holes on the course.

Other Thoughts:

As a resident, I'm just happy that Horicon took an under-used park and put something cool there to bring people to it.

I've played a TON of disc golf courses in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area, and as a 9 hole course, Horicon can easily stand with the 9 holers I've played in the Twin Cities.

Is it the greatest disc golf course in the world?

Of course not.

Is it a pretty challenging 9 hole course that gives people a reason to get out and have some fun at a park they didn't know was there or never used?

Absolutely.
