Pretty parkland course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 24, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Pretty parkland space that is not quite lightly wooded but certainly not tight, except for a few holes and never for the entirety of any hole.

Quiet and not crowded, but players do come through as do some walkers and runners. For those who like to play in peace but don't want to feel isolated, this is a nice balance. Nevertheless, a woman and her dog expressly came down the lane while I was trying to putt on the island of 5B and totally broke my concentration... Damage done, they promptly left!

The main challenge is staying off the pavement, I think. Which is not an issue for some holes and difficult for others. It's a good challenge, and I mostly moved back inbounds when OB (penalty stroke taken). All except the fairway of no. 11 from the red tee. That fairway is all pavement essentially. I just took the penalty stroke and played from the pavement, as if I was playing from a ball-golf course's bunker.

You feel most of the holes are get-able. If not the current round, some future round. You see yourself learning how to play this course with some real success, if you are not already an ace player.

There are some tees that have a tight shute to get out of. Some greens are totally guarded by trees and bushes. However, there is always a line and angle to play. Never felt in jail.

Cons:

The worn-out roadways are something of an eyesore and detract from the green beauty of the place. However, I truly don't expect the county etc to spend money repaving roads not meant to be driven on.

Unless you are a local, it is a true trek down the road to this place. So I played two rounds, one from the blue tees to the short baskets and one from the red tees to the short baskets. The next time I come, I will be leaving home a lot earlier and inserting in side trips to the PAX River Aviation Museum and the Point Lookout State Park. Make it a true day trip!

Other Thoughts:

You may alternatively want to pair this course with a round at Turkey Hill or the like. That would make a good day trip as well, with lunch in between.

Currently, most holes have a basket at the B and C pins. I believe holes 2, 3, and 11 have pins at A and B. Holes 9, 14, and 16 have pins at A and C, I think. Hole 10 has a temporary setup to accommodate massive ongoing construction. The temporary tee is just beyond the basket A location, and you play to the C pin.

As noted earlier by Sully, neither course map is totally correct. Perhaps print both to cover the bases!

No. 17 is totally redesigned now. It's tees are near the 16C basket (on that side of the street) and the baskets are across the street not far from the 18 blue tee (A), on the same side of the road but down the way and around a turn (B), and on the opposite side of the street near (I suspect) the old red tee.

Pars here on DGCR are for blue tee to long baskets, I believe. I assume all other configurations are all par 3s (??).

Pros:

Out-of-bounds on every hole that will add strokes to your score if you don't avoid it, but will not hide/wash away your disc, nor scratch you/give you a rash/add parasites, as most typical ob tends to do.

Two tee locations per hole. Each hole has a rubber tee pad, 6'x12'. Thirteen holes have concrete teepads, 3'x12'. The other five holes have their second tee location painted on the road.

Two nine-hole loops Three pin positions per hole. Signs at teepad indicate current position of the basket.

Practice basket. A few benches. Bathroom on site. Plenty of parking. Not far from food and petrol options.

Cons:

Half the teesigns were at the longs, half at the shorts, and some of the distances didn't seem correct. Some of the teepads which didn't have signs at them were difficult to find, although we did eventually discover them all. An update to the map and signs would be a great improvement.

Not a whole lot of elevation changes. Nothing tight/wooded for any significant duration.

Other Thoughts:

Course plays at the back of a public park, located in a former housing area. While the houses are gone, the patches/lines of mid-sized trees and the roads remain. The treelines will typically line one side of the fairway, and the ob-roads the other, creating fairways of a variety of width, but nothing extremely tight. Scattered trees are used to create early windows to be hit, or force right/left turns at the midpoint, or to somewhat guard the basket late.

Variety in distance is good, as the pin positions and tee locations, for the most part, differ quite a bit. The day we played, the course was in a B-C-A rotation, so six of each position. Ace runs/birdy opportunities were common for the 'A', scoring a '3' on the 'C's was quite challenging, even when throwing well, and the 'B's were fairly standard pars, but with opportunity to birdy - or bogey!

Variety in shot-shaping is also good - balanced blend of lefts/rights/straights needed from the tee. Many holes will offer you choices of how to attack the basket, often narrower-but-away-from-the-ob, or broader-but-ob-nearby - makes you consider your options before you throw.

The designers did a very good job with the resources they had to work with when creating this course. Although a bit out of the way/not near any other courses, it is a good play - find a reason/excuse to be in the area, and give it a play!
