Fun downhill throws but doesn't live up to potential

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 2, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

The elephant in the room; elevation:

This is of course built on ski resort with the disc golf course using the ski runs as fairways. The elevation adds to what would otherwise be a fairly open, easy course. The uphill holes at the beginning are open and short but difficult to get to because of the steepness and bad tee pads but more on that later. The downhill and cross hill holes are much more fun with many of the holes crossing across having the basket placed in the trees with the tee pad starting out in the open. The downhill holes while fun could have been longer and more challenging but overall they are far enough and downhill enough to get out your drivers and throw big hyzers at but not flex shots; big risk of overdriving the baskets even for noodle arms. I really enjoyed throwing my putter out there on crazy lines and seeing how much airtime I could get - really wish I would have brought my Zephyr!!!!

New holes and modified layout for 2022:

There are now 23 holes at this course with 5 new ones added in just this year. The new holes start after hole 13 where you walk back up the mountain through the BMX track, find a walking path, follow it and find hole "A". I hate to advertise for Udisc on this site but it made finding these extra hole much easier. Hole A throws over a new ditch to a basket protected by trees and bushes then hole "B" throw up hill and in to trees again. Hole "C" is a short one but on a ridge with trees and nasty tree kicks looming on either side, making you throw very accurately and straight. Hole "D" is a really fun downhill throw situated just in front of a massive tree line in an open field but to your left off the tee is guarded by obstacles. Hole "E" from my understanding doesn't have a tee pad yet so you are throwing from the previous basket to the basket for hole "E" which is another longer but more open downhill hole. After this you make your way back over the BMX track and hook back up with the original course on hole 14. I really enjoyed these new holes, much more technical and through out compared many on the rest of the course, hope anymore improvements continue to actually improved the course.

There is also a new hole "1" at the beginning of the course and also the old hole 1 both being labeled hole 1 which is confusing but I think it's to make up for the lack of tee pad for hole "E".

Course infrastructure:

Baskets are mostly temporary but I was told they are slowly replacing them with permanent baskets, as is I didn't see a problem except for a few that were mounted low but no biggie. Tee signs look really nice and do a really good job of showing you the basket, providing distance and shot shape, etc. On almost every basket there was a wooden "next tee" sign attached showing you the general direction of the next tee pad and little wooden skinny signs in the ground that would say "hole 14" and then an arrow reinforcing the signs from the basket. Not too many blind baskets but the few that there were had pink, white, or red ribbons tied to the nearby trees or bushes indicating the location if the tee sign didn't give you enough information. We didn't get lost the entire time and only used a phone app once to find the new holes which don't have signs pointing you in the right direction and aren't obvious from the cutoff.

Aesthetics:

Nothing captures beauty like mountain courses IMO and this course does it too. Stunning views of the Teton mountain range and the valley as well as the other ski resorts that surround Jackson Hole. In early October the mountain peaks across the valley had snow on the top of them and made for really good pictures. Pretty much anywhere around Jackson Hole does. This ski resort here is quite swanky, they have their own little village with coffee shops and cafes, adventure gear and two shops with disc golf equipment even if the selection is quite lacking and the prices are very high, still cool.

Cons:

Tee pads:

They are atrocious! I don't mind rubber pads if they are long enough, flat, and don't have any sticks, rocks or roots in them. These things are maybe six feet long and when you fall off the edge of them you're tripping and falling most likely as there is a drop off on them some 1-3 feet down. I learned to throw standstill off the tee when I played here let's say that. On top of that they aren't even and many are sloping up or down hill depending on where you're throwing to. Some of the worst pads I've come across in my 20 years of playing - enough said!

Difficulty and lack of variety needed to score well:

Although the course has a few holes with trees and tight lines, the majority of the course is wide open and course length is really lacking. I found myself throwing the same understable turnover uphill and the same hyzer shot going downhill. Very few times was this pattern broken up and by the back nine I noticed I had only used 3 discs the entire round. The funny thing I got par or birdie on almost every hole out here. I'm already willing to walk up a damn mountain to play disc golf so why not challenge me a little bit?

The design does not match the potential:

Although I do like the new five holes that were put in this year, I don't like the current design of the other 18. My friend who was playing with me after the round said "It was fun but I feel like it missed something?" I replied " A top of the world hole". I feel like they could have implemented one of these types of holes but went with so many filler holes and short holes instead. Can't help but feel like many of these could be merged or redesigned altogether to make a challenging, more diverse course. I want my downhill holes to be farther than 300 feet so I can really rip a disc hard and see how far it can go!

Other Thoughts:

Huge shoutout to all of the fine people of this resort as we experienced nothing but hospitality. Lady at the hotel desk showed us all the best shops in the village and drew a map for us to find out way as we were not sure where to go to at first - it's a really big place. Talked to a few guys in the shop and they are excited about the club doing more work up here and couldn't be nicer. Talked to a local player and club member for about 10 minutes and got all sorts of information. Although I trashed the layout a bit it was still really fun and worth a trip up here. There are lots of activities to do even in the summer/fall like taking a gondola ride or biking, hiking, ropes course, multiple playgrounds for kids, site seeing, etc. Just know that if you want to stay in the hotel it's like $800 a night after taxes and no I'm not joking. Also the area has a 22% tax rate or something crazy like that. We got fast food after our round cuz we were starving and two combos were $28!!!!!!

Fun little course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 8, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Nice elevation changes throughout.
Well marked, nice signage.
Trash/Recycling every ~3 holes.

Cons:

10 holes.
Mostly open, only two technical shots.

Other Thoughts:

Overall a fun course. I don't think it could be called extreme in any sense of the word. It does make good use of the elevation changes for uphill/downhill shots. Would be nice to have some more holes that used some trees to make them a little more interesting and challenging.

Your in for a work out 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 6, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

Challenging course on the slope of a ski resort. Great atmosphere and mountian air. Some extreme elevation change going up and down. thought out basket placement.

Cons:

Lots of hikers and bikers, some bugs and even though I was playing in mid-summer, it was still slightly muddy toward the base of the mountian. Some tall grass so losing a disc is possible.

Other Thoughts:

I enjoyed playing this course. It was a work out. definitly worth playing if your in the area.
