One of St. Louis' Best 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 21, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Jefferson Barracks is one of, if not the best course in the St. Louis area. It's very easy to find in south St. Louis County, accessible from both sides of the river via the Jefferson Barracks bridge. The course is set in a moderately wooded park with rolling hills, offering an excellent variety of tight, short holes as well as open, long ones. It's almost impossible not to enjoy playing this course!

Cons:

The course does get close to some lower-income housing areas on the west side of the park, and there are a few holes with a fairly long walk between them, but other than that you'd have to be awfully nitpicky to find something wrong here.

Other Thoughts:

The leaves get a bit heavy in the fall in many of the lower spots on the course, so be sure you watch your disc, but this David McCormack design is a must-play!

One of STL's Absolute Best 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 14, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- This is my home course, and how lucky am I!! Great course playing through a majestic tree filled park with hills and big valleys to throw over.
- Each hole has excellent concrete tee pads (with new tee pad signs!!!!!!!!!) as well as multiple pin locations, at least 3 on every hole which are changed quite frequently. This adds an excellent amount of diversity to the course because you could potentially play a different course each time you play.
- The course demands near perfection on most every shot. If you dont need to weave through huge trees, then you must clear long valleys and turn your discs perfectly to execute and score well here. Every hole is a par 3 and all but 2 give you a very good possibility to birdie or par on most locations.
- The people here are excellent. Very helpful, very understanding, very outgoing and polite. If you are new and need directions to a hole just ask anyone on the course and they will gladly help you and most likely offer to play with you to help you along the way.
- Every shot in your bag will be tested: hyzer, anhyzer, overhands, touch shots, deep bombs, controlled midrange/putters, everything you could want. And with the pins moving frequently, you get a great variety of shots every time you play.

Cons:

-Now that they have FINALLY put tee signs in, this, in my opinion, is a PERFECT course. I love nothing more than spending a day out here and playing as many rounds as I can.

Other Thoughts:

Wide variety of distances and shots, you will never be bored playing this course. One of my favorite holes is #3, when you have to shoot through a tunnel and over a valley at least 300 feet to just reach the first position. Believe me, until you step up to the tee, you dont really comprehend the hole and its difficulty. If you live in the STL area and havent played this course, get out there and play this course today. I guarantee you will be impressed.

The Enigma 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 18, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I love the terrain variety and the general layout of most of the course. The long concrete tees are a plus and there are benches at every one. Short walking distances from basket to the next tee. There are many opportunities to use a good variety of discs and styles to get the right approach and there are so many shots that tease you to take a gamble when you know you ought to play it safe.
It's nice that there is a decent restroom between 5 and 6. Good place to meet lots of other DG players.
Brand new (well refurbished to new condition) baskets with great, custom number plates.

Cons:

This course is almost always way too crowded. I have frequently had to wait for more than 10 minutes to throw at each tee because of the crowds. This will often lead to other players trying to get you to 'group-up' with them which usually ends up making your game take even longer. Much of the time, the people inviting turn out to be drunk or subject you to unwelcome/inappropriate jokes and comments. Another "con" to this course is the very thick, overgrown vines that are almost completely choking out all the smaller trees and bushes around the course and make it near impossible to find a disc that goes even a few feet off the fairway on any of the holes. It's evident that people lose a whole lot of discs here because I keep finding other peoples MIA discs while looking for mine (which I almost never find). Another con is the bog that has formed in the valley in the middle of holes 9 and 10, but the folks from the local club have built two very nice little bridges across most of it (thanks).

Other Thoughts:

There IS a lot to love about this course, but you ought to go at odd times when everybody else is either at work or still in bed - the course is much more fun then. I'd probably avoid this course during the late spring, summer and early fall unless you are cool with losing discs or are good enough to always throw exactly where you want and as far as you want. Wait until all the foliage has fallen off and/or go in the early spring before it all grows back to have a much less stressful game. Seriously, the parks dept. here needs to get the vines and underbrush cleaned up before it gets any worse and goes beyond the point of recovery.

St. Louis Best 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 1, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Gorgeous and dynamic course in all seasons. This course has a variety of pin positions that are moved weekly by the local club. There are always locals on the course who will point you in the right direction. Front and back nines start and finish at the same parking lot with ample parking, restrooms, drinking fountain, and a shelter for group events. There are trash cans on nearly every hole and benches on all of them. Plenty of shade in the summertime from the massive trees and the grass is well maintained by park services. There is a great mix of tightly wooded, mildly wooded, and open fairway holes that keep the course exciting.

Cons:

Cons would include poor signage which according to the kiosk will be upgraded soon. A few holes of the back nine are by a trashy apartment complex that discards a lot of garbage into the woods. Their kids may also give you a rough time picking up your disc or just mindless yelling.

Other Thoughts:

This is my home course and the reason I got into disc golf as big as I did. In another year when the new signs are in place, I could see this course becoming a big contender for a top 10 spot on DGCR.

Nice variety! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 4, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course plays through a sprawling park with no other park uses in the way. There is a great mix of park style holes with mature trees, tight tunnel shots through brushy woods, and a few pretty open shots mixed in. The pin set I played had a really good balance of lefty and righty holes with a great mix of hole shapes that keeps you trying different lines. There was also a good mix of short holes where an ace run is possible with a good drive and some longer holes where you'll want to take a good rip with a driver through the trees.

The alternate pin positions do a great job of changing up the course. Apparently they move pretty often, and are usually in a nice balanced mix, which would really keep the course interesting and fun. The tees were good concrete pads with an ok surface and enough room for the most part. The current pin position was marked with a bolt on the basic hole signs, a nice plus as long as you know the course.

Cons:

There is a bad lack of signage here. The tee signs have only distance and current pin position. They have no clue as to the direction to any of the pin locations, and many holes are blind so you do a lot of extra walking to figure out where the holes are. There are a lot of spots where the next tee is not at all obvious, a map or guide is a big plus here if you don't want to do lots of extra wandering.

The grass was a little long when I played, and a local told me that was a continuing issue with the parks people who won't mow and won't allow the club to do the mowing. There was also trash, especially on the more wooded areas of the course.

Other Thoughts:

This is a fun course with a ton of variety. The elevation available is used superbly to add challenge and some great downhill shots. There is enough danger on some of the holes that errant shots are punished, but it didn't seem like a disc eating course at all. Beginners might find it a bit long, but it's not too tight. More experienced players will find it a bit deuce or die, but in a fun way with some good challenges. In a tournament set up with more of the longer pin placements it could be a great challenge. The club obviously puts in a ton of work, and it shows, with even more pin placements in the works.

JB 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 5, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

JB is one of the best courses in the STL metro area. It plays through big old oak trees and over nice elevation change. Every hole on this course is remarkable, but I'll just give you a taste. Hole 1 is a downhill reachable 400+ feet. Hole 3 is my favorite. You have to split two sets of trees and clear the bushes at about 300' in order to hit the island of up hill putts. On hole 5 you have to hit a window to reach the fairway. Hole 12 plays left to right over a valley with bushes at the bottom. Hole 15 is a hallway. Watch out for hole 17. Go DISCover the rest of the great holes, you won't be disappointed.

Each hole has one concrete tee pad with 3-4 pins positions. The amenities are nice; bathrooms, drinking fountain, and shelter with bbq at the 1/10 loop (parking lot), benches at every hole, etc. There are some very knowledgeable players here that you can learn from.

Cons:

The flow from basket to tee is confusing the first time, but you can usually get a map at the kiosk near the first tee. Also, the signs are not helpful unless you already know the course. This is a popular park and can be crowded.

Other Thoughts:

The tee for hole 10 has a view of the arch in the distance. There is a league on Tuesday. They will let you play, but it's slow going.

wonderful jb 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 3, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-JB is set in the rolling hills and mature hardwoods of a large county park. It offers a wide variety of shots off the tee: hyzers, anhyzers, and straight shots. Holes range from semi open short and a couple bomber holes to tight, technical short and long holes holes.
-Some decent elevation changes, several throw over the ravine holes, some downhill holes, and a couple uphill holes. JB uses the elevation it has very well.
-A large number of holes play over heavily roughed ravines that can be treacherous if you miss your line.
-A lot of amenities: course loops back to the parking lot after 9, bathrooms, water fountains, nice concrete tees, benches at most if not all tees, and teepad brooms on some holes.
-Some nice fast greens on hillsides and a couple par 4s depending on the pin placement

Cons:

-The neighborhood around the course is kind of sketchy, there are a lot of odd folks just wandering around the course and people in the parking lot of the apartments next to the course, occasionally kids try to pick up your plastic...but they usually are curious youngsters, not kids trying to steal discs.
-Signage is terrible. They only have the placements (A,B,C,D) and distance. No maps of the holes.
-Navigation is a problem for first timers, there is some back tracking and road crossing involved to navigate this course.
-Due to heavy use the course is starting to get a bit worn. It's still a beautiful course, but a lot of the areas around the pads and pins are worn and several big trees were removed for electical lines and possibly storm damage.

Other Thoughts:

Overall JB is a great, tough par 3 golf. The only real reason it isn't higher rated in my book is the relative lack of distance. There are only 2 or 3 par 4s in the longest placements. But, I'd recommend this course to anyone traveling to the STL area. It's always a fun round here and they are constantly changing pin placements, so the course changes a lot and often. It probably falls a bit short of Sioux and Alton and Collinsville from the longs but it is top 4 in the metro area.

Pros:

Concrete pads, good distances on the each hole. Many obstacles on each hole also known as trees and there are lots of them on every hole. Challenges your throw and and accuracy as well as throwing strength. Can't really unleash a drive on any hole but have to throw drive for distance and place it well. Locals seem nice.

Cons:

Tee boxes were very narrow and when teeing off some tees were restricted due to the bushes on either side were either in front of the tee where they were not supposed to be or on the sides making it difficult to achieve the throw i wanted (felt crowded). VERY hard to navigate if you have never played it before, got to hole 6 finished it and couldn't find hole 7. No maps or signs that tell where thew hole is located just a sign that has hole number, a pin placement letter and distance (ex. A 325 ft) thats it, nothing else. I thought hole number 9 was the practice hole until i figured out fast when a disc landed close to me that it was actually 9. From tee 11 we threw at hole 12 because we did not know where hole 11 was until i looked found it by mistake looking for my drive.

Other Thoughts:

I would play it again if it wasn't wet and if i was in the area, i only rated it a 2 because of the navigation troubles. If u can find a map of the course to carry with u by all means do it. there is one at the beginning of the course but its difficult to remember where everything is.

Very big course. Nice paved road. Lots of very open holes and a few narrow ones. Bathroom and water fountain and benches. Multiple pins. Good concrete tee boxes.

Cons:

I can't remember which hole (3 or 4) that has a huge clump of trees and underbrush that if you throw into, it will suck trying to find your disc. Over half of the holes are out of sight from the teebox. Since the place is so big, you have to walk 600 feet to find the hole, walk 600 feet back to the tee, then walk the 600 again after you throw. One hole's placement is completely unreasonable. The map shows hole in one pin placement which was the wrong one at the time I played. I had to ask a local where the hole was and still couldn't find it until I explored a little. Must be a massive disc eater course because when I played there, I found 4 discs.

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 4, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Jefferson Barracks is a great course designed over rolling hills through large, mature trees offering ample challenge to all skill levels. There is one tee position and multiple pin positions for each hole. The DGA MachIII baskets were in great shape and the concrete tee pads were level, in good shape, and appropriately sized for the course. There were tee signs at every hole, but the signs only listed the distance for each of the pin positions with no indication to where the baskets were located and did not give any indication as to the layout of the hole.

The course had a nice flow to it and was comprised of two 9-hole loops that returned to the parking area. There were no crossing fairways, but there were a couple of fairways (No8/No11) that parallel each other in opposite directions. The course was very clean and appeared to be maintained very well. I didn't notice much underbrush or excess foliage, but it is still very early in the spring season. There were a few benches and trash receptacles throughout the course.

The course design takes advantage of the rolling hills in the park offering a great variety of uphill, downhill, and side hill lies. The slightly elevated tees on Hole 1, 5, 10, & 17 were a great opportunity to get some extra distance off of the tee, and provided a great view of the course. The holes have a lot of variation in length from one position to the next. Some of the other reviews mention that the baskets are moved frequently, so with the variation in length between the alternate pin placements, I can definitely see how this course would constantly provide a new challenge each time.

All of the holes are designed through the large trees in the park, but I would really call any of them technical holes. There are plenty of lines off of the box for varying types of tee shots, but there are also plenty of trees to knock down shots that miss their line. This course with its rolling hills and large, mature trees offered great visual appeal and a challenging layout throughout.

Cons:

This was truly a great course, but there were a few challenges for someone playing this course for the first time. The tee signs only list the distances for the alternate pin positions. The signs did not offer any indication as to the layout of the hole, or even where the pin was located in relation to the tee box. The basket could be seen from many of the tee pads, but there were several holes where I had to walk and locate the basket before throwing my tee shot. The other issue is that several of the tee pads are located a pretty good distance from the previous basket, but again, there is nothing to point a player in the right direction. Updated tee signs would be very helpful. The only other issue was the tee shot for hole 4. There was not much of a line that I saw off of the box, more of a throw it and hope for the best type shot. This was my first time at JB, so maybe there was an alternate route that I missed, or maybe there were obstacles in the way that normally aren't there, but I just thought I would mention it.

Other Thoughts:

All in all a great course that is both challenging and picturesque. I was in the area visiting some friends and only got to play 2 courses, but I was very pleased with my decision to play at Jefferson Barracks. In an earlier review of this course by Three Putt, he said that "The area has several very good courses, but this is still the course that best represents disc golf in St. Louis." The old saying is that you never get a second chance to make a first impression, so if this course best represents St.Louis disc golf, then I was left with a very good impression of disc golf in this area, and am looking forward to playing this course again, as well as other courses in and around St. Louis.

Great course, but... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 26, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Let me start by saying that I have not read any other reviews on here. That being said, I really enjoyed the layout of this course. When you figure out where you're supposed to go, everything fits together pretty well. (More on that in the Con section...)
There were several different lines off of almost every tee, and some of the baskets are reachable for an ace run, even for a guy that can't throw over about 320. The tee pads are pretty nice, but a little shorter than I'm used to.

Most of the holes meander in and out of a not very dense woods and there are uphill/downhill shots, both in the putting game and in the drives/approaches. I don't even think it's really wooded, there are just trees on the course. Not golf course open, but definitely there will be branches and trees right on the line you wanna throw sometimes.
I will definitely play this one again, hopefully this week. I really liked it even though I was alone on the course and it was 22 degrees!

Cons:

The signage is terrible. The only thing they tell you is the distance, unless it's in the "D" position, which says nothing at all. There are no signs saying where to go from hole to hole and the only map there is near the first tee and it looks like it's been there since the course was opened. The "D" locations aren't even on there. I took a picture of the sign with my phone and that helped some, but it doesn't even tell you when to cross the roads, which it does several times. On some holes, it's pretty obvious where to go, and sometimes I had to really look around as the next tee was not near the basket. Of course, this won't hurt me as bad next time, but it can be a little frustrating for first timers. Hole 8 was in the "D" position and I threw twice before I knew where the basket was! It was pretty long and over a hill/behind a tree.
So, really all of that will only matter to first timers probably and if you don't play at 3:30 on a Monday when it's 22 degrees, you'll probably be fine.
Now, the real Con: I was putting on 18 and a group of kids from the apartments next door threw a rock that zinged right over my head. It's not in the best of neighborhoods....

Other Thoughts:

Great course. It was everything I've heard - challenging and fun.

Pros:

Get your cards at the kiosk. The holes are very long for par threes. Each one has it's own character. Watch out where you throw but even at that you will find your disc. Like hole #10, the vegetation on your left down at the bottom of the hill looks like your disc will be lost if it lands there, but take it from me, I was able to find mine easily. Apparently lots and lots of people use that section of hole 10.
Gateway store is right there too so stop in and get you a putter. Wizards and Warlocks rule.

Cons:

Getting there can be tough so google you a map or gps it. Finding the holes are hard even with the map on the back of the scorecard. The alt. pin placements looked random to me but it was my first and only time there. Finding the next tee was tough too.

Not up to hype 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 1, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great signs to point you towards the course.

More parking than any other course i've played in St. Louis.

The 4x4 at the tees have hooks for bags/coats, ala Endicott.

Good course map at the sign by the first tee, plus plenty of scorecards at that same sign which have maps on them as well.

Nice big concrete pads.

Plethora of trees make shots a good challenge. Errant drives WILL be punished.

Great pin placements for holes 3 and 4 in particular.

Layout is a little awkward, but it flows rather well.

A fun variety of obstacles to throw around.

Great shot variey as well. I used every disc in my bag when i played.

Popular park, but pedestrains are kept out of the way of golfer traffic and vice versa rather well. Good exposure point for the game.

Cons:

Could use a couple more benches and trash cans, but what is supplied is better than most courses.

A couple of baskets (6 and 8) were placed in the "D" placement, but the signs provided only listed A,B,C pins. Someone (appropriately IMO) filled in "D"-umb for the yardage, since there is no official measurement.

No signs between pins/tees. A problem that would easily be solved by the map on the back of the scorecards were that map a little more detailed so you could gather your orientation easier.

Hole 7's pin placed too close to the adjacent road, especially if cars are parked closer towards the pin.

Needs a porta-john or two somewhere on the course, especially when the bathrooms by the first tee are closed.

Unsightly pile of fallen trees/debris in 16's fairway.

Pars underestimated. Every hole is supposed to be a par 3, but some are 400 feet and a few are even 500. When the tour comes around, great, but otherwise the majority of players can't par most of the holes in 3.

Tee signs could use maps on them, and likewise pins could have an indicator of some sort where the next tee is in case newbies don't grab a scorecard.

Some of the number plates atop the baskets aren't pointed towards the tee; makes identifying pins harder than it should be.

Holes 1, 9, 10, and 11,17 are just about on top of eachother. Lots of waiting can break up your rhythm.

Other Thoughts:

This course IS a lot of fun, and a very good challenge, but a little grooming will make it spectacular.
