short, wooded, old school course

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 15, 2024 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-short, wooded holes with mowed lanes and fairly tough rough
-older, single chain DGA's in good condition
-newer tee signs with maps have replaced the ones pictured here
-course map at the start
-a lot of the dirt tees are mostly flat and in good condition
-the maintenance was great the weekend that i played, easy to navigate and play
-camping and all kinds of stuff available on-site

Cons:

-some of the natural tees are not flat or even
-the rough can be pretty tough in some places, a lot better than older reviews indicate though
-long-ish walk back to the parking lot after hole 18, have to backtrack through holes 9 & 10
-the road is in play along the right side of holes 6 & 7, fun for a hyzer skip but watch for cars

Other Thoughts:

I had a lot of fun at this course. I was camping at the State Park for a few nights while course bagging the Wichita Falls area. It was the perfect warm up course for the morning or cool down course before dusk.

The course has been around since 1997 and from the look of the older reviews here, it hasn't always been taken care of very well. It seems like there is a better effort to keep the course in good condition now but I can imagine there are certain times over the summer where it gets a little wild. The baskets look 1997 but they are still solid and catch good putts. The signs have been replaced since the pictures on this site and are great.

The holes are mostly short with mostly straight lines and taller grass and then thick mesquite trees off the fairways. A lot of holes can be driven with a putter for the experienced player but there are a few longer holes and hyzer shots where you probably will want a driver.

This is not a destination course but I think it's well worth the drive from Wichita Falls if you like shorter wooded courses. Besides the private River's Edge course, this is the most wooded course in the WF area. Big arm players looking to blast drives will probably be bored here but there are still holes where an experienced player still needs a good, accurate drive to earn birdie. My noodle arm loves courses like this and it was in great condition so I had a blast. It helps when you drive a half mile down the road after your round, start a fire, and cook campfire tacos.

Lake Arrowhead 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 15, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Short course with some technical shots. It is maintained way better than it used to. Fairwaiys are mowed wider and trimmed beter. Tee signs on each hole.

Cons:

Natural uneven tee pads. Single chain baskets. Off of the fairway is pretty thick rough with fire grass, mesquite trees and lots of wildlife (snakes, spiders, other critters)

Other Thoughts:

Its a fun short course that you can play quickly with a handful of discs. Its built inside Lake Arrowhead State Park so there is a $3 donation required to enter but thats a small price to pay to help fund a state park that has a lot of things to offer.

Old School Disc Golf 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 31, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good flow of holes
Easy to follow
Tee signs are still in place

Cons:

Grass tee pads
most of the holes are on the short side
Long walk from 18 back to the parking lot
single chain practice baskets

Other Thoughts:

For some reason I just never made it over here to play. This is what I would consider an old school course, Cut out of the mesquite trees only a few of the holes are tough to reach off the tee for most players.

However, accuracy is key here, once off the fairway, you are going to be in very keep rough and mesquite trees that are no fun to throw out of.

The course is very easy to follow, not only is there a new map near hole one, but not only do the tee's show you what directions, someone has put red tape on the basket showing you what direction to walk. But with the limited mowing out here,it is very easy to figure it out anyways.

So not the best course to work on your long game, but if you need to work on your accuracy mid-range game, this is the place to play.
