Greatness could be had 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 19, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ DISCatchers. They are a bit old with a newer 1 or 2 mixed in there but they are mostly older DISCatchers with not as many chains and are slightly rusty. That being said, I had no issue with these baskets catching like they should.

+ Nice full color teesigns with all the alternate pin positions shown with distances and routes to take.

+ Parking by the tons. Just a lot of parking.

+ Bathrooms are placed throughout the property. Once I started playing, I didn't really notice them being around but there are a few facilities throughout the property.

+ Next tee markers are on the trees directing you where to go. I didn't have to consult uDisc too often to figure out where to go next. The signs are just little arrows on some trees. Takes you a bit to figure them out but once you do it's not too bad.

+ Diversity is king here. This course makes you use a lot of different shots and discs. You need to bring you full bag of tricks here to score well. I threw just about every shot except for a roller here.

+ Hole 8 is the signature hole to me but there are plenty of great holes here. Hole 8 is just a fun downhill shot over a little valley. Its a downhill tunnel and just a breeze to throw.

+ The course brings a lot of elements into play here. You will have wide open bombs, short technical par 3's, shots over water, uphill and downhill shots, shots wide open to the elements and others that are completely shielded. You kind of have a lot of different shots you need to know how to throw to be able to score well here. I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of variety of this course and it is probably this courses biggest positive it has.

Cons:

- Natural teepads. This is the biggest downfall of this course and takes it down half a point. When the pads are dry they aren't too terrible but these will get muddy with rain. They also aren't all that flat and some have roots coming up thru them. You can usually find a good place to throw off of. The tees can also get a bit slick because there are a lot of pine needles on the course and on some pads. Some teepads also had some stakes pounded into the ground at the front of the teepad with a rope stretched between them to mark where the teepad is. Would be nice to see this on all of the tees but its not a big deal.

- Hole 16 was missing a teesign. You could still tell where the teebox is if you have uDisc and if not you just have to look around for the worn down spot that indicates a teepad.

- The teesigns are nice but don't help as much as they could. They show you the different pin placements and the distances and some natural features but they don't tell you which pin position the hole is in and it seems like the distances are a bit off. They still had the old teesigns in the area and the distances on the old and the new didn't match up. Something just seemed a bit off.

- Some holes seem to play directly on top of some of the camping sites. I think I counted 3 holes where you were teeing off and or holing out way to close to campsites. It wasn't an issue when I played but I could see this being an issue in the summer months.

- Some holes had mandos listed on the teesigns but did not have them marked on the course.

Other Thoughts:

To get into the park it is now $3 a person. I really enjoyed playing this course and would go back if I am in the area. I would prefer to play Ford Park but that is only because it has concrete teepads. If this course had concrete tees then it wouldn't even be close. This course is so close to being a 4.0+. There needs to be concrete tees here and the simple edition of marking what position the pin is in would make this course so much better.

I really enjoyed my time here. The course started and finished great and every hole has something to offer. This course is the style of course that I love and prefer to play. Its wooded, but not too wooded. Its got a good bit of length but not too much. The par 3's are good par 3's the 4's seem like good 4's, not too many if any par 3.5's. The one par 5 is a bit shorter but its not bad. If you 5 it you will probably feel bad but a 4 feels pretty ok. I enjoyed the variety of this course and what it has to offer. I don't think you need to travel out of your way to play this course but if you are in the area then it should go to the top of your list of courses to play. This is a better course then the others in the Shreveport area but it's not a must play, if there were concrete tees then this might turn into a must play or definitely play here first kind of course.

Very Good State Park Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 17, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

It is great to see a Disc Golf Course in a state park. It is $2 to get in for the day, but that is a minor expense for playing a nice course. Be sure to ask for the map/scorecard when you check in.

The course winds through several areas of mature forest. Most holes are in the trees and require a careful drive, but a couple are quite open.

Hole 4 requires a drive across a short neck of the lake, but the carry is short. Holes 5, 16, 17 and 18 play along the edge of the lake, but it isn't really in play.

About half of the wooded holes are clean enough that a errant tee shot will still give you a fair look at the basket. But others are very thick along the edges, and a drive fading into the edge will leave you with a tough second shot.

Hole 7 is an 888 foot shot across an open grass field. The basket is tucked about 100' back in to the woods, and there are black-and-white painted posts on either side of the gap to give you a hint of where to drive. Hole 8 comes back across the same field, so these two holes are your opportunity to air it out.

Hole 9 is a tight drive down a power line clearing, with thick brush on either side of the fairway. It is narrow, and difficult not to fade your drive(s) into the edge.

Hole 16 is a blind drive over a rise with the basket tucked out of sight to the left. Hole 18 is a nice finishing hole that returns you to the parking area.

There is a huge parking lot near the Hole 1 tee, a couple of restrooms along the way, and plenty of trash cans. Tee signs are basic, giving hole number and distance. Tee pads are natural, which fits in well in this environment.

Most holes have a couple of basket positions, and in some cases you'll need to walk up to see the basket. A few holes offer a two tee positions.

Cons:

Tee signs are very basic, with no hole diagram. I always appreciate a map, especially when I'm only going to have a chance to play a course once or twice.

A few of the tee pads were a bit rutted out, and some were a little muddy and slick.

There is little elevation on the course, so the challenge is limited to missing the trees.

Other Thoughts:

Overall a very nice park course. We camped here a few nights and enjoyed both this course and the ones at Lake Claiborne.

beautiful location 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 22, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Gorgeous location next to Lake Bistineau
Nice mix of holes, short, long, open, tunnel
Well groomed
Disccatcher baskets with dual locations

Cons:

Poor signage; hard to determine basket location
Must have map; course mixed with hiking trails
Course is far from any major city.
Dirt tee-boxes

Other Thoughts:

The first time I played this course, was after a daylong rain, so all the teeboxes were muddy, and the lake was high. Had to find the basket on several holes then walk back to tee off, as there is no sign telling you where basket is, nor which pin placement is being used.
Maybe bring a boat and go fishing after play. The lake is supposed to be excellent for fishing.

I played it again recently, and the lake had been drained, so no real water hazards. Tee boxes, though dirt, were really not bad when they were dry. Really no one else out there. I think if i played this regularly, it would be one of my favorites.

Classic Louisiana Beauty + Disc Golf = A GOOD TIME 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 14, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course is embedded in sheer Louisiana Beauty! Enjoy a brisk walk through old cypress trees hung with spanish moss. Hear the wind pass through the tall pines and live oaks.
This course offers a challenge to newcomers and veteran disc golfers alike.
A course map is available at the park enterance.
The course is well marked with bright blue markers on every hole indicating two seperate pin distances (long and short). Some holes offer alternative tee pads (closer to the pin).
The course design is well done, offering a varation of required shots. The design of the course gives you a great overview of the state park and chances to enjoy the lovely scenes of this great landscape. I especially enjoyed on serveral holes being forced out of my natural bent. For instance, several opening drives required a hyzer shot when I typically would have felt more comfortable with an anhyzer. The draped spanish moss creates haunting windows of opportunity, that if missed create havoc for your next shot. The wooded holes on the course are punishers. Not only are they very narrow (10 -30 feet tunnels), they are long! Several wooded holes played 200 - 500 feet long. Any wayward drives carved their way into dense woods that punished you into a dropped stroke just to get back in the fairway. Pin placements were mostly tucked into trees that required laser accuracy to hit the long putts, or nice approach shots to have chance at par.
Not a great deal of water on the course (good for beginners).
Several spots to take a break on a bench or use the restrooms.
Highly recommended!

Cons:

One major drawback to this course is the lack of concrete tee pads. I never realized what a difference having permanent tee pads made until playing this course (which has elementary dirt pads) in the rain. My footing was shaky and really hindered my power throws and drives.
The course had standing water on several holes after moderate rain fall the days before playing the course.

Other Thoughts:

For good or bad (you chose), several holes required a long walk from basket to next tee pad (some felt like 200-300 yards). BE SURE TO GRAB A MAP before heading out to #1.
Beatiful course. Great for disc golf and nature hikes!
