Tough but Fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 16, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Short but difficult holes.
Half of the holes follow a shallow creek, if you miss a shot it is easy to grab your disc.
Good use of the terrain.
Pioneer Grill has good burgers and cheap beer.

Cons:

Was muddy when we went, but rain just moved through.
Thick underbrush.

Amazing Terrain, Great Creek OB risk, but 2 throwaway holes!! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 15, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Terrain. Once you get back to the woods, you drop off toward the creek, playing twoards a pin right on the edge on hole 2. Then you cross the creek and things get really interesting with the creek very much in play. A few holes offer up the creek as the main fairway, with safer bailout options available, but not easier. This is a great forceful risk vs reward situation - risk throwing over the creek for the easier shot, or risk taking the tight and difficult route to avoid the creek!
Greens are often terraced and/or placed near the creek edge. These risky locations make you think hard about your putting skils before rifling away.
The creek as OB is plenty enough to deal with on more than half of the holes. The others (besides throwaway 1 & 9) have sharp elevation bordering their edges that can cause discs to roll into the creek, and tight tree lined and tree framed airways that can kick a disc into the creek.

Cons:

To start off, it's a niner. It only has one tee and one pin (but appeared to have multiple pin options if I remember the signs correctly). And as a niner, holes 1 and 9 are throwaways! hole 1 throws from the parking lot, across an open volleyball area, into a pin near a few trees. Then hole 9 does about the opposite but forces you to throw back into and across volleyball nets. Sure, you could play it as OB, but with the amazing terrain, get all 9 holes back in the hills along the creek!
Not a lot of variety. We're talking about tight wooded holes, some sharp elevation (but not really used like at Brickyard), and not a lot of varied distances.
If all holes were back in the woods along the creek, if there were multiple tees (no concrete needed, just level crushed stone), and if there were multiple pins on each hole, this course could be even more amazing than brickyard. Plus it's only $1 to play and right at a bar and grill.
Signs didn't really identify if across the creek was OB. Playing this way would make it more interesting and tough. Especialy if you were required to cross the creek on #7 in order to be in bounds. This would require people playing the creek 'airway' to actually make it to the green or back into the main fairway.

Other Thoughts:

This is a fun play. Not exactly the greatest or most fundamental design, but fun. It's a good round with buddies where you can egg each other on to 'go for it' and laugh when they miss or cheer when they make it!
I would come back here, but only after playing brickyard. It was very unique, but seemed to me to be very roughly put together, not entirely varied/balanced, and the 2 throwaway holes were amazingly disappointing.
It costs $1 to play, better than $5 at axledog which was lackluster anyway.

Great 9er 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 11, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is one of my absolute favorite 9 hole courses. It has great elevation with several steep holes, and some form of elevation on just about every hole to keep you on your toes. Two holes play over the creek if you dare, with the entire flight of the shot over water if you take the most open route, a great risk/reward decision with much tougher but drier routes through the trees. There is a great mix of left and right turning holes here, even though all the holes are pretty short you'll need to be creative with your shot selection.

The baskets are in great shape, and caught well. The tees were a mix of natural pads that were decently maintained, and some concrete pads. There were hole signs that did a nice job showing the hole layout and distance. The bar offers beers for your round, and call-ahead ordering for after, and has lots of other fun stuff to do including volleyball, horseshoes, and a stage for live music. There is also a short well-lit putting course with full sized baskets but very short lengths for a fun nighttime game, seemed like a really fun addition to the course.

Cons:

There were a few holes that were very much throw-aways at the beginning and end of the course, including playing through the volleyball courts and very near some of the tables on the patio adding some safety issues as well. There is some thick rough that can eat discs, but it's not anything that makes the course unplayable. There are some erosion issues on the hills that can get quite muddy and slick.

Other Thoughts:

This is a really fun place to play despite the filler holes, it could be even better with a little work fixing these. I love the atmosphere of the bar and the course, and the terrain and creek make for some very fun short holes that don't make you really notice the lack of distance. I definitely recommend a stop here, though it may be a little frustrating for some beginners and a little difficult to get around if you've spent much time at the bar beforehand with steep hills and some thin bridges over the creek.
