Pros:
Life In Christ Fellowship in a nondenominational church located just off of I-70 , west of Columbus . They have decided to design and maintain a disc golf course on part of their grounds . There is plenty of parking close to the kiosk and the first hole . I didn't see a bathroom open , and since the church services were over on the Sunday late afternoon that I was there , I am not sure you can use theirs .
-- THE EQUIPMENT -- There is a nice kiosk near hole 1 . People are putting found discs ( I found one , too , and called the owner to pick it up ) up in the Kiosk roof's supports . There is also a garbage can near the kiosk , which was the only one I remember seeing . Please carry out what you carry in .
The course advertises 18 holes , and they utilize the tees and baskets to its utmost . There are 10 large springy rubber tee pads to share with the 18 holes . There are a large 5' X 9' . You might use it pointed one way towards a basket , and use it the other way coming back .
The tee signs are good. Very descriptive , they give you hole number , par , distance flight path , and even a commandment . Since there was no commandment that said , "Thou Shall no covet thy neighbor's drive , I was inclined to use a mulligan or 2 during my round . The baskets are the MVP Black Hole , which were adequate .
Worth mentioning. They had some cool little brooms attached to the tee signs for you to brush off needy tee pads .
-- THE LANDSCAPE -- The course plays mostly flat or slightly sloping . Much of it is kind of park style , with a few woods holes at the beginning and end . A large pond may come into play on holes 1 and maybe 17 . There is a small gulley that will come into play also on 2 & 17 . Grass cutting may have been neglected as of late , at the grass was at least ankle deep , to higher . The overgrowth can be brutal ( see cons ) .
-- THE HIGHLIGHTS -- No highlight holes , but a couple of interesting ones . #3 is a par 4 298' hole that starts with a hard left to a landing zone in a gulley and on a narrow path . The basket is out of the brush and a hard right to the basket .
Best hole to me was #11 , 531' where you drive to an opening that releases a 2nd drive ( maybe approach ) uphill to the basket , which has brush on the right and behind it .
__ THE TIME -- I was turned around and a little confused here , so it took me and hour and 10 minutes to play the course . A foursome that had most of the course to theirselves will get through in a little under 2 hours .
-- I don't know if the course has a large following or not , and there was 1 other person out on the course when I was . You might have this place exclusively yours on off-peak times.
Cons:
Safety - They have consolidated this course that should hold 9 holes into a crowded 18 . There are baskets overlapping fairways , blind shots that might go into other players , baskets close to tee pads . All I can say is , " Heads Up " !
Navigation -- You need to print the map here . It sounds easy to go out for 10 holes , then play all holes coming back , but it's not . I had to backtrack to play 14 . Seeing 3 baskets at a time plus tee pads will do that to you .
Disc Risk -- Medium . If the course was longer , I would have rated it higher . The grass was high , the bushes were thick , and if you wander out of the fairways and into the course framing brush here , you disc might bs a goner .The overgrowth with its thorns can break skin . The pond should be out of play and hard to throw into .
Crowding -- I imagine that there will be waits if several groups play at once ., since baskets and tee pads are shared . Keep this in mind if you play during popular hours .
Easy , Lack Of Wow -- Some will be disappointed in the lack of challenging holes . This may be by design , as the church may not want the congregation and locals to feel intimidated . A couple of holes make it hard or impossible to get to like 3 , 17 , 6 & 14 .
Other Thoughts:
Don't let my course review score influence a chance to play . This was a good course placement to open up the I-70 Columbus - Dayton Corridor . The course is inexpensive advertising for Life In Christ Fellowship Church , and a way of saying Hi and inviting the public and curious to drop by . I think , with a few tweaks , the course could be a staple to the Columbus disc golf world . Any course that ever has a donation box , drop a couple of dollars in .
MY RECOMMENDATION -- For the congregation and the newbies , you may want to bring spotters if you want to play here . Same with families . Some control will help you leave with the discs you came with . When I set that guy's disc up in the wood supports of the kiosk , his disc had company . If you are a local living in the Jefferson area , this course is okay for you . Intermediates and up might want to head toward Veteran's , unless living down the street . Travelers might step off of I-70 to play a few holes out and back , just to pump blood back into their legs . Course Baggers , a good way to pick up another course while collecting in Columbus .
