Only course in the area 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 16, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

It's the only disc golf course in the area without having to drive a long distance. It's sponsored by a combination of the city parks and rec department and UCM so there should be discs able to be checked out at the parks and rec offices and the UCM gyms, but given most of the original UCM Disc Golf Club members who worked to get the land grant and the cash flow to build the course from both sponsors are gone, there are pretty low odds anyone is even bothering to take care of the course anymore.

The course was designed by back hand dominant players so most of the shots are designed to be taken backhanded or left handed.

The course was donated for free by the University and the land was granted by the City and designed by students at UCM within the restrictions granted by the city Parks and Rec department and built with the assistance of volunteers from Whiteman Air Force Base so you can't really argue with the results. It took very little time to go from "We have on disc golf course" to "We have a disc golf course."

Cons:

The city didn't allow access to the wide open field on the backside which caused the course to need to be very cramped up and short. Most holes are at best a par 2 or 3. There are obstacles basically everywhere. Luckily it is the cities least used park so there are rarely people occupying the pavillions or the rundown park equipment nearby. You do have a risk to throw a disc into someone's yard, into a creek with limited access especially in winter months, or over a barb wire fence so you have to be careful.

Other Thoughts:

Not the best course by any means, but it is a far sight better than the no course that Warrensburg had for ages before the UCM students banded together with the city to create one. Could it be better? Absolutely. Will it ever be better? Probably not unless an entirely new set of people begin working for the city who are more open to the ideas of recreation and using unused land that the city owns.

In case you can't tell, I was the founding member of the Disc Golf Club at UCM and did all the legwork to organize this park into existence. Coming from California where we had amazing parks for days with 18+ holes, this is nothing compared to that, but it is 1000 times better than the nothing we had before I got there and considering we got it done for "free" with no money out of pocket from any student using funds from the University and getting a free land grant from the city, this is pretty good. I'd love to see someone revive the UCM Disc Golf Club and campaign with the University and City to get another course opened up or even expanding this course into the unused land that stretches well beyond the back of the course.

With that in mind, of course there is going to be some bias in my review, but even I know this isn't a perfect course. It's between a 2.5 and a 3 for me and it only gets elevated to that status because there is absolutely no competition in the area without a long drive to get there. If this course had competition nearby it would fall to a 1.5 or so as it's about as good as something someone stuck in their backyard while trying to cram in 9 pins.

Marr Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 5, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

NEW concrete tee pads.
Well maintained by Warrensburg Parks and Rec.
Accessible for newer players.
Excellent fairway drive/up shot practice for experienced players.
Most of the course follows a walking path
Parking and bathrooms

Cons:

Short - you won't get any full distance drive practice here
Hard to see walkers in some spots
Baskets like to spit (especially #5 - it's mean)
For a little course the disc loss potential is surprisingly high

Other Thoughts:

The highest I can rate Marr is a 3 because it's a simple, short-shot 9-hole course. That said, for what it is I love it. Played it hundreds of times as I live .6 miles away.

Most holes demand a specific line/shape that experienced players *should* have in their bag. If you can 2 each of these holes then you're ready for any upshot you'll face on a technical par 4.

Small Town Options 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 27, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The course has good, well kept baskets.
The course is moderately easy to navigate.
There is a decent variety of long and medium holes.

NEW(ish) Concrete Tee Pads! (although some a on the small side)

Cons:

There is a creek to avoid on most of the holes.
It is really easy to lose a disc in the woods or creek.
There are a couple holes playing through occupied spaces, having to be cautious where you throw your disc(s) to avoid hitting picnickers. There also on occasion are, UBER rude neighbors from the houses who's back yards back up against the park (particularly on hole 8 & 9).

Other Thoughts:

This is the only disc golf course within 20 miles+ of Warrensburg. Good for practice/learning, but also very challenging for new players. You run the risk of losing discs, and there is no easy way to retrieve them if they wind up in the drink or woods. I would recommend this park if you are looking for something different with some difficult & technical shots.

Not a bad course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 16, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Trees!!! Not on the first two holes, but holes 3 and 4 for sure. They thin out on 5 and 6, and are there to the right for holes number 7. Hole 8 starts out tree... Um.. tree-ie? But hole number 9 has trees to work around. The whole course needs out of bounds marked on each sign because it is confusing on hole 9. Do you go over or around the trees? 1 and 2 are great little warm up holes.

Cons:

No out of bounds really marked, and you play through some areas where you could hit a bystander if not careful... But then that is a challenge to the course. Isn't that what we like? Challenges? No holder for Course Cards with par and distance info on them. Dirt tees still. YUCKY after rains. Gravel would be nice or Concrete.

Other Thoughts:

I liked this course. Hastings, right smack-dab on the main strip, offers a wide variety of Innova and Discraft disc to choose from. This is a great thing. Towns like Clinton have no such stores yet and offer a good course to throw at.

Not bad for the 'Burg. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 1, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I was very pleasantly surprised! They didn't have much to use with the ground they were given, but boy, did they use it. 1-2 are very easy, basic shots; 3-4 take you through the woods. 5-7 are longer and also employ the woods to a lesser extent, while 8-9 are long bombs that allow the big arms to stretch out and have fun.

Brand new baskets are, obviously, in great condition.

Ample parking right next to the course.

For being a new course that's obviously still rough around the edges, the signage was fantastic and generally never left me wondering where to go. Just pay attention to the "next tee" arrow on the sign when you start the hole.

The course is only 9 holes and short at that, making it a very easy play after work or to work on putting/technique.

There aren't really enough big challenges for advanced players, but for the casual/beginner like myself, it was a very fun course and tested every element of my (still developing) game.

There is a small dry creek bed that somewhat comes into play on hole 5; kudos to the designer for using everything available

The course is short, but there are bathrooms at the first/second hole, and they're easily accessible from the 7th if you need them too.

The area was fairly quiet -- if you're looking at this, I'm guessing you live in Warrensburg, so you could have guessed that.

EDIT 5/1/2015: There are now gravel teepads installed, which helps a lot. In addition, 2, 8, and 9 have been altered somewhat to not be as close to the surrounding yards. This is both good and bad, but mostly good, as it significantly cuts down on the risk of lost discs/damaged property in the surrounding yards. Signage is also up telling disc golfers not to go into yards to get discs.

Cons:

On 1-2 and 8-9, you're throwing right at people's fenced yards. It's a bit cramped and I was nervous to really open up with my driver because I didn't want it to end up in someone's yard.

The guy next to hole 1 is super nice but he needs to figure out a way to stop his two dogs from getting out. They escaped like 3 times during the 45 minutes I played the course. They're friendly but seriously man? Get those puppies corralled!

The course is right in the middle of a very residential area; with so many homes around, I wonder how long it will be before homeowners start to get fed up with people traipsing through their yards/over their fences to get discs. I lived in Warrensburg long enough to guess that won't be an issue, but you never know.

No tee boxes; the little flags they used to identify them have already been moved or stolen, seems like. There's signs there though, so it's not a huge deal.

There is a b-ball goal and large slab of concrete, along with a playground, smack in the middle of hole 7. Nobody there when I played, but this could be an issue. Just be careful and don't bean someone's precious snowflake in the head with your putter.

While I didn't see any fellow DGers out here, there were several people either walking their dogs or milling about the park. You might have to watch out for them and/or wait for them and their puppy to clear the area before you rip your driver.

Watch out for the nasty barbed wire fence near hole 5!! I had an errant drive go on the outside of it; luckily I found a branch to push it back over to me with, but if you lost one out there, it'd be gone for good. The city should probably at least cut the barbs down like Blue Springs did with their course.

EDIT 5/1/2015: The signage is starting to look a bit rough and is still generally pretty unhelpful. The maps really aren't necessary since the holes are fairly short, but it would be nice to get better signage in. Hole 4's sign has fallen down due to constant spring rains. Hole 2's teepad has been moved to where it is a VERY short 150 feet. I nearly beaned my own car in the parking lot off the teepad (it stopped just short in the grass thankfully), so please be careful if you're used to throwing 200+ feet on your drives!

Other Thoughts:

This is definitely not a destination course or anything, just a nice 9 holes for you to play if you happen to live or work in Warrensburg. For being brand new and rough around the edges, I found it really fun and I'm sure it will be a great home course for your DGers out in the 'Burg to keep up on your basics in between trips to bigger courses!

Add at least some mulch tees and maybe some benches, and this course might even be a 3.5. For what it is, it's awesome, and I hope the city puts a bit more effort into it to make it a great short little course. With the university nearby I'd hope it'll start to see a lot of use.

EDIT 5/1/2015 - since holes 8 and 9 have been substantially shortened, 9 is still a fairly interesting hole, but 8 went from being the real fun long bomb to a pretty straightforward shot. It's no doubt they did this to protect nearby residents' yards. I completely understand and agree with this change, however, it's a shame to see those holes have to go. They were very shoehorned into the area so I'm honestly not surprised the residents complained.

To be honest, with the changes, this is a superb beginner course. Short, easy to play, convenient if you're in the area, and good baskets in good shape. The small creekbed can eat a disc if you're not careful, but it's not awful and fairly easy to avoid.

I'd Love to Have One of These Across the Street 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 14, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-decent signage
-nice baskets
-challenging layout
-variety in layout
-lots of mature trees that make the holes interesting
-fair amount of elevation change
-easy to navigate
-bathrooms at the parking lot
-water fountain at the parking lot

Cons:

-no tee pads (yet?)
-only a couple of trash cans
-several holes play very close to one another in a back and forth style...I was glad someone was not throwing behind or in front of us in a few places.
-several holes also play immediately along or over the walking path, or over a barbeque area, or, depending on how you want to tee off, over a "basketball court" (which seems to be randomly placed in the middle of a grassy area of the park)

*added 10/12/13*
-flags marking precise location to tee off are all but gone, leaving a general worn area to tee from.
-the park does appear to receive regular foot traffic across the course, such as walkers, runners, and dog-walkers.

Other Thoughts:

I was passing through with my wife and two year old, along with a couple, their baby, and two young boys. Halfway through, the ladies commented that it was a nice park for a stroller.

Being a 9 hole course and having 3 brand new players along with me, I pulled only a mid and a putter out of the car. These two discs were sufficient for several of the holes. However, I look forward to going back with the rest of my bag. There are a few longer distance holes and holes that may call for specific shots.

The first few holes are under 300' and I think there may have been another, but they've got enough challenge between the low ceilings, many trees, and slight elevation, that I couldn't call it a con.

A few par 4s here may be an item of dispute for some. Nothing new there. If you think a hole shouldn't be a par 4, play it as a par 3. Have fun.

This small park is tucked away and right on the edge of a residential spot. There were several tweens hanging out at the playground. Other than that spot, it was hard to tell how much traffic the rest of this small park receives. So, I can't say whether the holes playing over park attractions are truly an issue. If those things aren't being used, they may as well be part of a disc golf course.

I thought this was a really fun 9 hole course. I wanted to play it again, but we were just passing through. If 9 hole courses aren't allowed anything higher than a 3 disc rating, I'd still rate this a 3. You have to think before you throw on most holes, and at least half the holes feel like they could be part of a larger 4+ disc rated course--even the shorties. I wouldn't drive 40 minutes just to play it, the only course in Warrensburg. But if I'm gonna be closer or passing through, I'll definitely make extra time to throw it if I can.

*added 10/12/13*
The sign for hole 2 was moved closer to the pin, creating a new tee location, but the sign does include a general illustration of where the previous tee was. This is almost a con for a couple of reasons:
-the original tee location was well placed and offered a fair challenge for par 3. The new location reduces the challenge of the hole enough so as to make the hole appear to be designed solely for a beginner's par 3.
-since there are no actual tee pads, the original tee location doesn't even have the luxury of a flag to mark it...
