Popular Local Niner

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 6, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Popular because it provides more of a challenge and is more scenic than most of the area's other nine-hole loops. It has some nice elevation changes, some open to lightly wooded holes, and even flirts with a small stream on a couple of holes. One concrete tee and one pin placement featuring what I would call intermediate distances cater to a large swath of the discing population.

Cons:

We weren't quite sure where to park and ended up parking down by the bottom and walking back up the hill to the #1 tee. The navigation was a little wonky in a couple of spots. The course will appeal to a lot of disc golfers but may be a little difficult for new/low-level recs and a little easy for advanced or above. A fun round should be had by most though, provided you can handle the hills.

Other Thoughts:

So we have a fun better than your standard nine-hole course that would make for a great weekly buddy round course.

Basic Park Course, Fun 9 Hole Round 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 19, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

I had some time free and I was in the area so I stopped by to play a quick round at this 9 hole course. The course shares the area with a very well-developed park. I saw ball fields, soccer, trails, and shelters in a well maintained and large park.
-Even though the course was only 9 holes, it offered a variety of shots ranging from doglegs to 500+ foot drives.
-Holes 5 and 8 play over a creek, which is fun without offering a major risk for losing a disc. 5 is a big dogleg right while 8 is short, but has an obstructed line to the basket.
-Uses the elevation changes well. Hole 1 starts with a 200 foot shot up a steep hill. Hole 2 plays along the side of the hill while hole 4 comes back down with a dogleg right, emptying out into an open basin.
-Several holes are wooded, with fairly wide fairways
-Tee signs on each hole
-Concrete teepads
-Park has plenty of parking, bathrooms, and water fountains

Cons:

-Teepads were a bit small
-Hole 8 was shortened, hurting what was a great shot
-Walking path comes into play on a few holes
-Marsh near basket 4 presents a lost disc risk
-A few shots are blind, presenting a risk if no spotter is present
-Long walk from 9 back to 1
-Baskets are getting a bit old and beat up. I saw one or two that were short or bent.
-It appears they are updating pars on the course. Udisc had old pars which were definitely too high, but many of the signs were now par 3 which is more accurate. I'd suggest playing the whole course as par 3.

Other Thoughts:

This course does exactly what it needs to do, it provides a fun 9 hole round that takes 40 minutes to play through solo. While not particularly challenging, the shots are varied enough to make the round enjoyable. If you're in the area I definitely recommend stopping in, it's worth checking off your list!

My Rating: 2.8 (rounding up to 3)

Nine Hole Courses are Cool Too! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 12, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Mason Sports Park DGC is a fantastic nine-hole course in the Cincinnati suburb of Mason, Ohio. Set in a very nice multi-use park with many different sports to be played here. I have a sneaky suspicion that there is a reason this is dubbed a Sports Park.

The course has a lot of different types of golf for being nine holes. Holes to throw full drives on, and holes to shape shots through the woods on. Holes that require a full shot, and holes that require finesse. Uphill, downhill and flat holes. I've seen less variety on a full 18!

Decent tee signs with adequate information, tee pads that get the job done, and slightly older Discatchers that catch well. Nothing to complain about, but nothing to write home about either.

Hole 8 is a great downhill tunnel shot with a wide creek to cross near the basket. Getting all the way down the tunnel and crossing the creek in one shot requires great accuracy and a decent amount of power, and is very satisfying when done.

Cons:

Holes 3 and 4 are wooded shots that require shot shapes to reach the pin that might or might not exist, and if they do I really would like someone to teach me. I was scrambling on both those holes, even though they are both reachable.

Hole 2 plays close to the parking lot, and on a busy day, a car might find itself with a nice dent from a poorly thrown shot. However, on a day with no cars in the lot, it is fun to play.

One tee and one pin position to play, so if you want to play twice to get a full 18 in, it will be the same both times.

A few holes that play in the tweener range, where a 3 feels pretty good, but a 4 feels really bad. They are more than likely par 3s by scoring average as a two is possible, but really only reachable with a stronger arm than mine.

The rough off of the fairway is thick in a lot of places, and getting slightly off the line might force you to pitch out. In nine holes, I did it a few times so take my word for it.

Other Thoughts:

I always have a hard time rating 9 hole courses, but I settled on a 3. If I had 18 of these holes, I would frequent the place, but being only 9, it most likely won't see a return trip with so many other great courses in the area. Mason Sports Park is often forgotten about when listing the courses worth playing when in the area, but if you are North of the city, it's a nice 45 minute stop.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 24, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Playing around a large multi-use park, the course takes you through vastly different types of land - some holes playing around a parking lot, while others feel like they're in the middle of a forest. One of the main reasons this is a highly regarded 9-holer in the region is its variety. Most 18 courses in a park like this don't have nearly as much variety.

The course makes great use of the elevation present, opening with a steep uphill blind shot to the pin, and then following with a fun downhill bomb with a reasonable chance at an ace run. The creek is used in different ways on 5 and 8, and is really picturesque. 8 is definitely the highlight hole here, and stood out to me even after bagging most of the Cincy area courses. It combines so many fun aspects: downhill bomb, blind tee shot, tight tunnel out the gate and then opens up, creek at a perfectly dangerous position, cooler stocked with beer near the pin (ok, well I guess it doesn't have EVERYTHING).

For 9 holes, it also does a nice job of providing variety in distances. There are plenty of chances to air out a disc as well as hit multiple finesse shots.

Cons:

Even only being 9 holes, there are many times where a spotter would be helpful.

I particularly did not like 3 and 4. They're both blind shots with very narrow fairways bordered by thick rough. This is my least favorite kind of hole.

Hole 2 is fun, but dangerously close to the parking lot. You can easily hit parked cars.

Somehow, the same guy played through my round twice, and nearly hit me each time before I saw him. No fault of the course, unless he's been planted there meticulously. Maybe, I accidentally wore my Steelers shirt.

Other Thoughts:

After raving about hole 8, my rating might seem a little low. I wavered on giving it a 3.5. Mason has about 3-4 holes that I really enjoyed, but also a few that were average, and then a couple that I really didn't like. Those ones might be more of a personal preference. I can see people really enjoying this course. It's still one of the best 9 hole courses I've played.

Great 9 hole course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 21, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

9 hole course that works around other park activities, but stays separate. It's a great use of the land.

Concrete tee pads, that could have stood to be a touch longer, but nothing too serious. The ground was quite level around the tee pads. One tee per hole.

Discatcher baskets, all in decent enough repair. One pin position per hole.

Now that we're past that, let's talk about the actual holes. Every hole is pretty damn fantastic. Lots of elevation, lots of distance, and lots of trees. You'll need to be accurate and long to score well here.

The elevation is especially used well here. Almost every hole has at least a little up or down, with many have severe changes. Very well done.

The river comes into play on a couple holes, although the only one it SHOULD come into play is 8.

Cons:

One tee/one pin position. As great as this is for a 9 hole course, it would be even better with more options.

You'll want/need a spotter on many holes, as you'll be throwing big shots around blind corners on several holes, and the rough is pretty thick. If you're playing solo and really going for it, there's a BIG chance of losing discs here.

Other Thoughts:

Even with the cons above, there's really not much bad that can be said about this course, other than it would be awesome with 9 more similar holes.

This is NOT a course for beginners, although I imagine it gets a decent amount of chucker traffic with being a 9 holer. All other skill levels should have a lot of fun here, especially if you're capable of 350' drives.

Overall, this is a great addition to the Cincy area, and definitely a must hit if you're in the area.

Wish there was room for more 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 27, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The most challenging nine hole course in the Greater Cincinnati area, the Mason DGC is truly embedded in a very well maintained (and heavily invested in) Sports Park. Of course there are hiking paths, soccer/football fields, top-notch baseball fields, and all the amenities that go with them (plenty of parking, bathrooms, concession stand, etc). But I think the neatest feature is the expensive and sturdily built bridge leading walkers, and specifically disc golfers, over the picturesque creek to the further half of the course.
The location (Near Kings Island Amusement Park) means there are plenty of nearby restaurants, gas stations, hotels, and other attractions for the whole family to make this a travel destination, and this course is worthy of a visit.
Nine holes of challenging, Intermediate to Advanced level disc golf weave through the parts of the park that are not suitable for other sports. There is tremendous use of the elevation here, with 1, 3 & 6 being essentially uphill, 5, 7 & 9 being level, and 2, 4 & 8 being downhill. There is a fairly even distribution of left and right turning shots. There are a couple of 400 footers, one nearly 600', and only one hole under 310 feet.
Tees are in good shape, and very few holes have much chance of interaction with other park users...which is good because almost every hole is 'blind' from the tee, and generally pushes even the best players to par 3's (birdies are possible, but demand a great deal of skill). The lanes of foliage you must navigate are fair, but very challenging. As a first year player, this course demands I play a conservative round, if I want to have any chance at shooting par. What makes that hard is that the distances and accuracy require good shots every time for a Recreational, or even an Intermediate player to play bogie free.
The signature hole is the 360' #8, which requires a drive of over 280', avoiding the trees, to carry the creek, which is hidden from the tee, and 25 feet below your feet. If the creek is running low, it almost requires you go for it. If it's high, you may look like Tin Cup if you hit a gust of wind, or a branch, or...

Cons:

***Major update 7/1/20***: Well, that dropped my rating a full disc. When the park decided to pave a pedestrian and bike path straight through the fairway of the signature hole #8, it was bad, but now, to make the hole safer (it was, ...before the path), they dropped the tee down to the terrace by the smelly creek, shortening the hole by over 100' and eliminating the elevation. That, combined with the lack of keeping the hedges from encroaching on the fairways, and I decided the course is now just worth a three disc rating.

The most noticeable design feature that is worth mentioning is the fact that there is no parking near the #1 tee. Our league players generally start on #3, in order to finish at the #2 basket, which is right next to the lot.
While the tee signs are good, and accurately relate the necessary info for each hole, first timers might want to print a map or hook up with a guide, as there are long walks from the lot to #1 (or from #9 to #1), from #2 to #3, and from #4 to #5.
The Innova baskets here (yep, with the 'chastity belt' tops) have a little rust going on, but since I have trouble enough putting my disc in the chains like I should, I'm not gonna blame the baskets!

Other Thoughts:

I have played here five rounds, but have been so focused on the challenge, I didn't note whether or not there are trash cans. I did notice the lack of benches, because playing two rounds here (18 holes) can be as fatiguing as a round at Mt. Airy (and I score about the same for 18 holes at these two parks).

Pretty Good 9 Holes 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 26, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

All the same as above. The company I work for designed/installed the pedestrian bridge used for #5 and #8 so it was nice to see that "in play".

Holes are really well manicured (as stated). It was really a nice course to look at. I know that sounds funny but, not all disc golf courses are pleasing to the eye. This one is.

It is not a difficult walk either.

We played around 11:50am on a Thursday and we were the only ones on the course.

Throwing your disc in the trees is not too hurtful as there are a lot of trails in and out. It is not really dense.

Cons:

As stated above, the repative LEFT to RIGHT holes was annoying but it really does test your RHBH An-Hyzer skill.

Other Thoughts:

Although I see the comments about a mando on #9 forcing players to throw down the line LEFT of the tree line, it takes a pretty accurate throw to get it threw the tree line and out to the field.

I enjoyed this course a lot. Made for a nice lunch break round.

P.S. - People are listing #8 as a par 5. It is not. As a PDGA course designer myself, this is at best, a Par 4. Even if you lay up short of the creek, you are still in the circle in 2. If you have to play it as a 5 it is because you tossed it into the trees.

Best 9 Hole in Cincy 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 3, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-large open field to warmup/practice in. Even has field goal posts to aim. Big enough for monster arms.
-This course will challenge all levels and reward them aswell.
-Plays to both RH/LH and forces Int-Adv players to really work a disc to get a 2.
-Played as a par 3 this is very fun, if your new play it with listed pars to build confidence.
-This course is very well maintained.
-Long concrete tee pads
-Cold water fountains
*others have been covered

Cons:

-This frustrates me more than anything else on this course. The tee pads on several of the holes make no sense. They are aligned in very weird directions.
-Hole 2 can lead to car damage.
*others covered

Other Thoughts:

Ok im going to be very descriptive in my posts of cincy courses. So if you dont want hole by hole then stop reading now.

-Hole 1. Short shot but adds some difficulty with a steep incline and a blind shot with trees to the right. LH's will have a decent mid range shot. RH's will have to force a turnover shot uphill which can be hard. *A great shot to try for anyone is a thumber/tomahawk. If thrown right it parks..
Hole 2. Amazing layout. This hole is on a hillside and makes LH's throw a dead straight shot between two big trees. Rh's can throw a straight light fading shot or a big hyzer to park.
Hole 3. A big hyzer for rightys and a difficult turnover of LH's. This seems like a simple hyzer but requires good line shaping and can be more difficult than you imagine because the fairway slopes downhill.
Hole 4. Great layout. S shot for both LH/RH, plays downhill and through a tunnel. Very challenging hole for all levels.
Hole 5. Easy shot for LH. RH's this hole can harm you. This requires some big turnover or creativity and watch out for the creek.
*The next 4 holes seperate the wannabe's from the true players.
Hole 6. Long uphill hole bending to the right with a scary fence to watchout for. LH's can throw a bomb driver, RH's have to work a long controlled turnover line.
Hole 7. Tight fairway bending to the right and long. This shot builds confidence for the next hole one of the best in cincy. Long hyzer line for RH and long tough turnover for LH. Trees down the fairway make approaches for 3's very tough.
Hole 8. In my opinion the best in Cincy. A beautiful shot downhill and over a wide creek. If you park this hole you will remember it and fall in love with this course. This hole really plays with your head and its relatively short.
Hole 9. A very tight fairway and lots of length. LH's will love it for controlled bomb shots and RH's can get creative. real players must call the cart path OB.

Hardest 9 hole course around Cincy 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 11, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Almost every hole doglegs right: This will force you to work on bending your throws right. (tilting the disc or sidearm)

- Nice elevation Changes: There are several holes that either go up hill or have a drop off somewhere along the way.

- Creek: There is a creek that is pretty deep in spots (even more so after a rain). Most creeks on the courses around cincy don't have much water in them, but this thing is like a mini river. Its probably around 20 feet wide and even when its low you can actually hear the water flowing.

Cons:

- Only 9 holes: If this were 18 it would be excellent.

- There are so many dogleg rights that its almost unfair. My dad has a mean side arm and he always beats me and my cousin there because we mostly toss backhanded. It will make your right curving throws better. It will force you to find a way.

Other Thoughts:

One of the best 9 hole courses around.

Cool Course, but Only 9 Holes :-( 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 9, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course offers nice scenery, a variety of holes, and a decent challenge.

It is located in a new, clean park with lots of other activites (i.e. lacrosse, soccer, brand-new baseball fields, sweet playgrounds for the kids, etc.). The city of Mason obviously intends for the park to see heavy traffic from everyone in the community, which should motivate them to keep it clean and manicured. Also, Mason is an affluent area in general, so the course shouldn't suffer from dilapidation.

As far as play/challenge, I would rate the course a 3.5 out of 5. The holes are mixed between 215 ft. birdies to 400+ ft. "testers". Also, shifts from tighter wooded holes to more open fairways require you to break out all of your shots.

Finally, as previously mentioned, hole #8 is about 300ft., with a babbling brook crossing at about the 225 ft. mark. My friend had a killer drive on this one which was cruising over the water when it hit a tree squarely, reversed direction, and spiraled into the creek. Needless to say, we all lost it...ha ha ha...

Cons:

My only gripe is that the course is only 9 holes. Because much of the space is already occupied by other activites/ball fields, I don't see expansion as a possibility.

Other Thoughts:

This course is nearby several other courses including Turtlecreek, Gulley, and the brand new Countryside YMCA course in Lebanon. (Countryside YMCA just opened on 5/5/09 and isn't yet listed in this website, but I plan to take pictures and add it soon). We drove from Cincinnati up to Mason Sports Park (30 minutes) on 5/9/09 and also played Countryside YMCA's 9 holes (twice). I could have driven over to Gulley (5 miles away) and played 18 more if not for prior obligations.
