Nice school course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 10, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

To start with, this is by far one of the best courses I've seen designed for kids and new players from the short tees. It starts out easy and open, and gradually gets a little more difficult and adds a little length and some obstacles while staying reasonable for middle school aged kids. The long tees offer more challenge and are a good step up for kids who take to the sport or adults who want to play the course.

A couple holes bring a steep wooded hill into play, with a short but tough uphill shot, and a fun downhill bomb through a tight window. The rest of the holes are flatter, but do a good job of bringing the woods into play on at least one side from the long tees on many holes. There is some length variety from the long tees with some ace runs and some longer shots where you can throw a driver.

The baskets are in good shape and catch well. There are basic tee signs with distance on both sets of tees, and the short tees have basic maps showing layout. The course is easy to follow and nicely maintained.

Cons:

The course is pretty easy and straightforward, even from the long tees other than a couple interesting holes. It's unfortunate that they lost most of the holes on the hill, that would make it much more interesting and challenging to have more elevation and wooded shots in play.

The tees are rutted and eroded, and don't offer a good surface to tee from. The signs are not in the best shape, and some are missing the hole information. Several holes are blind, and with minimal signage we had to do a lot of extra walking to check out where the pins were. A few holes bring the running track and sports fields into play, causing some possible safety issues and making part of the course unplayable when the fields are in use.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course for the intended audience from the short tees, and has long tees that make the course interesting and somewhat challenging, so as school courses go this one is pretty darn good. For more serious players, this isn't a must play, but it's a nice addition to the disc golf scene in town and a great way to expose kids and the community to the sport.

Nothing Outstanding 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 13, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Gorgeous scenery.
Some holes are difficult and will help you throw a wider variety of shots.
Practice basket on course provides a nice warm-up.

Cons:

Tee box locations are sometimes tucked away or nonexistent.
Tee boxes are highly beat down and makes it hard to get a decent run-up.
Heavy overgrowth makes a few holes undesirable to play
Second half of the course gets kind of short/boring
Sometimes difficult to distinguish what basket you're throwing to.
No maps on the long tee boxes.

Other Thoughts:

While this course was very pretty to play, as it's set in and around the woods, it almost seemed like a chore finishing the round up. A lot of the times you will have to walk the majority of the hole to know where you're throwing towards as maps don't exist on the long tee boxes. (There are maps on the short tees but not the long. I don't get it either) As stated in the course description, some holes have terrible overgrowth, particularly #6, where one wrong throw might mean kissing your disc goodbye. The holes range from making you make very technical shots (i.e. #5, 7, 8) and some are just ridiculously short (i.e. #4, 11, 12) Hole #11 reaches beyond 600 ft and is the only hole on the course that really lets you air one out. While it was fun at times playing this course, it was good to finish. Menomonie offers many other courses that are definitely worth looking into before you settle with this one.
