Beacon Hollow Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 28, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Discatcher Pro 28 baskets
- Concrete Tees
- Descriptive tee signs
- Garbage cans throughout the course
- Multiple shot holes (par 4 and 5)
- Cool, creepy old sanitarium buildings that are probably haunted

Cons:

- Some 'tweener' holes
- Some confusion with baskets from the other course
- A bit overly righty-friendly

Other Thoughts:

This review is for the 'Beacon Hollow' course that makes use of eighteen baskets moved from the former Riverside course in Cherokee. This course strings together 18 holes that wind throughout the Cherokee Mental Health Institute into a 'championship level' course.

The course makes good use of the sprawling, wooded grounds of the MHI, providing several multi-shot holes. For the most part, the shot shapes required are neutral (allowing the option of a right-to-left or left-to-right shot to get to the basket). However, on the holes that force a certain shot shape, those tend to favor a right-handed hyzer shot.

There is a good balance of hole lengths, but a few holes tend to be of a length that are too long to be fair par 3 and too short to be legitimate par 4.

The last hole can be confusing to a visiting player, as it features a hard right dogleg that runs along the original course that still exists on site. Once you throw your tee shot, there are several baskets within view that could be confused for the intended basket.

Overall, a very good course that, with a couple of tweaks, could easily be an excellent course.
