Pros:
A bomber layout that's very Typical of disc golf on bolf courses.
-Maintenance: Immaculate grass. The baskets are also in very good shape.
-Bolf Integration: Just like Colina Park, this course integrates frolf and bolf well. The layouts share tees and fairways, so there isn't the dangerous and confusion rite of crossing fairways and deciding who should be throwing.
-Rip It: Wide open with plenty of long holes to sling the disc with abandon. I found myself going with the widest rim driver on a bunch of these holes that, at least for a player of my distance, didn't really require accuracy off the tee.
-Shot Shaping/Gameplay: Minimal shaping, with distance being key on most of these. An average hole utilizes one key tree and perhaps two additional peripheral trees to define the shape. More often than not, it's a simple hyzer or anhyzer. A few holes have baskets perched on hills for extra action. There are a couple of shots that stand out though: hole (4) is slightly downhill and the basket is guarded by trees with low ceiling, hole (7) is a fun downhill bomb with obstacles on both sides of the large fairway, and (9) deals with cart paths, OB left, and mid-fairway trees. Also included are some birdie opportunities for 300' or lesser throwers.
Cons:
-Interest: Or lack thereof. I wouldn't consider any of these holes to be technical. Throw far or throw farther. As noted, there are obstacles, but very few that are difficult to avoid.
-Drainage: I've been told this was a historically rainy winter, so perhaps this isn't valid. Nonetheless, when I played here, several holes had marshy sections and two had lots of standing water. Hole (18) was so bad they shortened it temporarily.
-Basket Location Finding: with no tee signs, it can be difficult to locate baskets. On a couple of long holes, I aimed for the wrong basket on my first drives.
-Traffic: My sense after playing here was that the bolf course constantly busy. Early afternoon on a Thursday, I played through at least 5 slow golf groups. Obviously a problem everywhere in San Diego, not just here.
-Amenities: Passable, but slightly worse than average. Tees are natural, but giant. Solid, numbered DISCatchers. No disc golf-specific signage. Definitely no extra frills, other than of course the club house for golfers.
-Fee: $20 here was about as much as I've ever paid for a round. Only other time I remember doing so, it was at Bucksnort, which is substantially more interesting than here.
Other Thoughts:
Mission Bay is a fun opportunity to throw lots of drivers. It is not an opportunity to face challengingly shaped fairways. Keep in mind that you'll pay a lot to share with golfers, but it could be worth it on a mild day where the sun will shine on the manicured fields.
