Up and Back Down Again

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 24, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

A solid 9er with dual pads, elevation, and foliage.

-Amenities: High quality. DISCatchers, spacious concrete tees (both locations), signs with legend, map, and info on at least the short tees (and some longs). Practice basket, course map, and rules of disc golf posted. Benches and cup rests on almost every hole.

-Dual Tees: On some holes the difference is quibbling, but for others the longs substantially change the flight path of the hole. It's easy and fun to play the course twice with the different tees for a full 18.

-Flow: A smooth out and back through the park, which is a long strip. That said, many courses of this layout feel cramped, but Montiel is wide enough that it's no issue.

-Elevation: Substantial throughout the course. It's mostly up from (2)-(6), but the final three holes are all downhill. I only wish they were a bit longer so you could really rip.

-Shot Shaping/Gameplay: A lot of foliage, but mostly very basic shapes. The first two are the most entertaining, as they work around a large protected area with the most foliage of the property. After that, a lot of holes are basically open with one or two trees to work around. Lengths vary from ace runs to substantial drives from the longs.

Cons:

-Disc Loss: Two main hazards. First is a protected area in the middle of the property, which is most relevant on (1)-(2) but could also affect (9). Second is the property line along the back of the park, which again is mostly relevant on (1)-(2).

-That Special Sumthin' Sumthin': Montiel has an impressive list of pros. Unfortunately, they don't translate to thrilling gameplay. Everything about this place is extremely competent, but it's no more interesting than any other typical course.

-Long Tee Markings: Into the weeds here, I really wish the long tees and short tees were clearly marked as such. On a couple of holes, the long tees were not obvious, including a couple that teed from the neighborhood road bordering the park.

Other Thoughts:

Montiel is a great addition to this area, and an extremely solid 9er. Unfortunately, there aren't very many exciting-shaped holes, so its ability to draw players from a wide radius is small. On the whole, it's a pretty Typical course. You'll have a good time if you come, but it won't stick out more than other courses you know.

Pros:

-Montiel Park is a nice 9-hole community course. The course circles up and then back down a moderate hillside and plays through the native desert terrain.

-Two tees on almost every hole add variety. Especially on holes #2, #7, and #8, the back tee plays significantly harder. Tee boxes are large, textured concrete and baskets are Innova Discatchers.

-A practice basket and park information board including a course map by the first tee.

-A solid forehand is a big advantage here. Holes 3, 4, 7, 8, and 9 all slope right to left. It's difficult to hold a backhand shot on these holes without blowing by the basket.

-Every hole is an ace opportunity. The moderate distances along with the gently sloping terrain make it easy to run the basket and still hold the green.

Cons:

-This is a popular park for four-legged friends with
the large off-leash area. Watch out for dog poop on the course.

-It would be nice to see some more trees planted. Currently, only a few holes require something resembling a line.

-The ground is very rough and not easy on discs. Most of the greens are a mixture of sand, dirt, fine gravel, and boulders.

Other Thoughts:

-This is a fairly new park. A lot of work has been done to add shrubs and ground covering plants. However, some of these plants have become quite thick and excellent at swallowing discs.

-The long tees for holes 3 and 7 cut across the previous hole. Still, the park is too small to provide good opportunities for full power shots.

-I don't know how feasible it would be, but a 10-meter circle of grass around each basket would greatly improve the experience. Couple that with a few dozen new trees and this could be a really solid 9-hole course.

-This is a great practice course if you live nearby. It's usually not crowded and most holes provide the opportunity to throw whatever shot you want to work on. If you're visiting from out of town, Kit Carson or Brengle Terrace Parks are a better disc golf experience.

Pros:

Montiel DGC is a short 9 hole disc golf course located in San Marcos, California. This course a beginner friendly course but has some fun shots in between. This course plays on the back side of Montiel Park. There is a dog park but that does not interfere with the course unless you grip lock your disc on hole number 1.

There are 2 tee pads on every hole as well. The Pictures are very outdated.

Hole 1 is a fun righthand backhand hyzer shot. The basket is blind though. Hole 2 is a fun shot straight away downhill hole.
Hole 3 is a uphill hole. Very ace able. Only 129 feet.

Hole 4 is a downhill righthand forehand shot. Huge tree in the way if you throw a backhand. Back tee is blind on this hole as well. Hole 5 is a nice short uphill hole just like hole 3 but longer.
Hole 6 is a straight shot right to the basket with a few guardian trees. This hole has great views.

Hole 7 is a downhill backhand annie shot. Or a forehand.
Hole 8 and 9 are like the same hole but a little different. They are both downhill crush shots.

Tee pads are concrete which is a plus. Very nice tee signs as well.

AJ and Allen Risley definitely put a lot of work into this course which is nice to see.

Cons:

The baskets are nice but some of the chains are rusting.
-Not much of a challenge for experienced players but I would like to see them combined some holes to make a few par 4s.

Since it is a nice park to walk through you do get some pedestrians with there dogs.

I felt like I threw almost the same disc on every hole. I would like to see more of a variety.

If you see the phot of hole number 3 evey thing grass is now bushes and shrubs.

Other Thoughts:

- This course is now very beautiful. Some landscape and plants were added. The landscape was built around this course which is AWESOME because on some courses that I have played they don't do that and you have blind shot after blind shot.

The course is not dusty as much anymore. I do think they could be a little more creative with where they put the tee pad on each hole. Hole number 8 was one of them. There was a back tee located on the tee sign but I could not find it. I believe there is one but it must have been like 150 feet behind the regular tee pad.

Bring your putters!! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 26, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

You dont need anything other than your putters and maybe your OS mid. Great place to take a kid or someone who is just learning. It only has nine pins but you can play them twice round for a full 18. Most of the pins are within 250 and I would even say within 200. I use my putter on 6 out of the nine and a Roc on the other 3. Easy access parking and free

Cons:

No cons because when I go there it is to work on form or to take a newbie.

Good for what it is 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 1, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Good use of the land that would otherwise just sit there.

-Good place to work on mid-range/putting.

-Birdies all over the place. If I don't sink at least 3 each round, I'm disappointed with myself.

- Ace opportunities everywhere.

- Signage is very nice.

-Easy to Navigate.

- Ask the locals about the Safari layout. Adds a layer of complexity to what is otherwise a pretty simple course.

Cons:

- The land is pretty unremarkable. In the summer, its mostly dust.

-No challenging holes.

-No holes on which you can really air it out.

-Proximity of houses means lots of discs lost in back yards.

Other Thoughts:

This course reminds me of an executive ball golf course. Short holes, easy layout. It is a great place to work on making accurate mid-range shots. Other than that, this course isn't really anything to write home about. If you're looking for a real round, go to Kit Carson or Brengle Terrace. If you're looking to hone your skills, or just a quick 30 minute lunch round, Montiel is the place.

-Great course to work on mid range game
- Very accessible

Cons:

- Never use a driver
- 9 holes
- very dusty
- not much easier to go to Kit Carson up the road and really get a good game in

Other Thoughts:

would be a good course if you need to play a round on a lunch break, or in a half hour

Fun course don't get me wrong... but don't drive out just to play it.. go instead to kit Carson

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 6, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Fun little 9 hole course with some elevation change on every hole.

- Good signage, with accurate distances. Maps available and navigation is easy to follow with the exception on going from hole 1 to 2. Follow the path by behind the 1st basket, up the hill 250' or so.

- The course sits on a long sloping hillslide with plenty of uphill shots and downhill bombs.

- DG exclusive, no non-disc golfers to get in your way.

- No crowds, very little waiting around even on the weekends.

Cons:

- Really short, no good opportunities to air it out.

- No shade, it can get really hot.

Other Thoughts:

All in all this is fun little course that exceeds expectations of your neighborhood 9 holer.

Easy trip off the highway to get a quick round in.

You can tell this course is well used and cared for by the locals.

Fun with just putters 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 7, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- REALLY nice signs (almost too nice for a course this small :p)
- multiple tees (one cement/one rubber per hole)
- baskets in good shape
- fast drive off freeways
- not crowded, easy to play a fast round or couple rounds
- large port-a-potty and drinking fountains right next to parking lot

Cons:

- long walk between 1 & 2 (walk up hill/path from basket 1 about 250')
- not too much in the way of obstacles
- holes are VERY short
- no trash cans on the course
- small parking lot, but this shouldn't ever be an issue unless everyone from San Marcos with a dog takes it to Montiel Park's dogpark at the same time

Other Thoughts:

Honestly there isn't much to complain about with Montiel Park. It's exactly what a small 9-holer in a city park should be, and it's in much better shape than most 9 hole courses you'll come across.

I wish there were some more obstacles than the few scattered trees and scrub bushes to make the course a little bit more difficult, but I also can't fault the course designers for doing the best with the land available to them.

This is a perfect course for a beginner player to learn to control their discs out in the open because there aren't many obstacles, but also deal with some elevation changes and have the chance to "rip" (and i say that in relation to just this course, because a rip at Montiel is only 300') a couple discs on 8 & 9 on the way back to their car.

I played it with just a putter today and it's also a good place for the advanced player to practice taking runs at baskets from 100'-150' out.

If for some reason you're in the area, it's worth the 20 minute stop to play it, at least to try for a couple aces. Extra half-disc added for how nice the signs are!

Nice Addition to San Diego DG Scene 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 22, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

A nice 9-hole course with alternating tees. The short tees makes for great practice for driving with your putter. Mix it up between short and long tees for a longer round. It is a well-designed course in a small area of land. The signage are really nice and they make finding the next tees simple if it's your first time. The teepads at the short tees are concrete while some of the longer tees are on rubber pads.

It adds a nice variety to the San Diego Disc Golf scene. Every course in this county has its own scenery and this course is no exception. If you want to avoid the crowd at Morley and got some new disc golfers with you, this is the place to go.

The location was easy to find, right off the 78 freeway. It is also the only free-to-play course in San Diego.

Cons:

Could use more obstacles, the holes were fairly open except for hole 7 which is behind a group of trees. Some of the pads for the longer tees weren't to be found. The terrain can be pretty rough and can beat up some of those weaker plastics.

No shade around the holes so be prepared to bring lot of water during those hot summer months. I learned my lesson the first time around and will come prepared the next time.

Other Thoughts:

Great course for those ace runs if you're looking to get some aces. Leave the bag at home, you'll only need a couple of discs here. I even played a round here using only mid-ranges and putters and was just fine.

I will definitely come out here again.

Great start! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 10, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

A much needed course in San Diego. Well thought out considering lack of landscaping. Great for families, kids etc... Also has long tees which make this short course more challenging. Next to dog park for spouse / kids that don't want to play. Friendly locals. Good beginner course

Cons:

Short but fun. Hopefully grass and trees will pop up someday! :)

Other Thoughts:

Reminds me of a "bunny-slope" at a ski resort. About the same size and rise of a beginners hill. half the holes up the hill, the other half down the hill.
