Pros:
-fantastic elevation changes
-great design, uses features well and layout is good
-discatchers in great shape
-natural tees in good condition
-awesome greens, each is either well protected or on a slope
-lots of mature trees, well defined fairways require a variety of shots
-trashcans, course map, plenty of parking, other park facilities
**Update**
-9 new holes! 18 total
-still room for expansion
Cons:
-natural tees are good for now but without regular maintenance i can see them getting bad very quickly with all the elevation. some already have exposed roots, etc and most of them are not level. it would be great to see concrete here eventually but it makes sense to break the course in a bit first
-no restrooms or drinking fountains
-navigation is pretty easy but a few next tee signs would be good since lots of beginners will play here
-what Giles already said in his cons about par and tweener holes definitely applies (see Giles review below)
not much to say here, course is clean and safe
**Update**
The new back 9 is great but there is a definite lack of shorter, more technical holes.
Other Thoughts:
This 9 hole course is laid out in one section of a large park with all kinds of large and subtle elevation changes. There are many mature oak trees that come into play on all holes. The fairways are semi-open with well-defined flight paths, many obstacles, and a variety of fairway shapes. This is no pitch-and-putt either! With 1 hole at 553', 4 holes over 400', and 8 holes over 300' this is certainly not the typical, beginner-level 9 hole course. With the distance and the number of trees, long and accurate shots are required to score well.
Every hole except the first has some significant elevation change. Hole 3 is a huge 553' downhill bomb, hole 8 is a long, subtle downhill 470', and holes 4 and 6 are tricky uphill shots. The greens and basket positions are thoughtfully placed also, with nearly each one either protected by trees or low hanging branches (3, 5, 6, 7) or placed on slopes for dangerous putts and approaches (2, 4, 9). Hole 8 has a cool 'island' green surrounded by a small stone wall, elevated about a foot.
This course is the first in its area so it's a great introduction to the sport. Lots of beginners will play here so I presume that is why the par is set at 30. Despite being quite a long course, it is still beginner friendly with the generous pars and elevation. Nothing will hook a beginner like seeing a drive flying 500' downhill!
Definitely worth the drive from DFW to check out this course. 2 rounds make a nice afternoon. Not much else out here but you can play Town Lake on your way back.
**Update**
With 9 new holes, this course now has a lot to offer. Most of the new holes are quite lengthy; this is definitely a big arm course. The new back 9 mostly winds around the area between the front 9 and Hwy 69. A small creek runs through this area and comes into play on 3 or 4 holes. Half of them are long and flat, the other half are long with elevation. Only a couple are under 300'. Personally I would have liked to see a few shorter technical holes sprinkled in. New holes already have signs too.
