ZigZag & Shoeless John 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 30, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a beautiful course, that is not yet well known. It is rather forgiving on the front nine, and gets woody & a bit tougher on the back. It covers both the upper & lower camps of Nawakwa, and is pretty well cared for. Tee boxes/Markers are easy to find, & accurate.

Cons:

Few cons, but you may irritate some curious campers who share the grounds. Be aware of camp kids playing in the region, and not being aware of the danger of discs coming in. It can get rather windy, & there is a fair amount of poison ivy to avoid, also!

Other Thoughts:

This course is great for beginners! It is also pretty obscure, so not a lot of traffic to avoid, or backup at the tees. It is a beautiful campus to walk, and enjoy a fun round on.

Pros:

Frequent elevation changes.

Some shot shaping on the latter third of the course.

Rules of play (see title for one of them)

Cons:

Micro tee boxes.

Some tee boxes too close to previous baskets.

Some crossing fairways.

A "gaga" pit - huh? Looked suitable for cock and/or small canine fighting. My suburban upbringing did not prepare me to interpret this situation - sort of like when my country cousins spoke to me about the joys of "corn hole".

Other Thoughts:

Playing this course reminded me of my years as a teen in the mid 70's, playing frisbee golf with our lids, with the targets being the lamppost at the end of the street, but having to go left of grandma's vegetable patch.

Backstops, cabins, vehicles, utility buildings, shelters, benches, trash bins, utility poles/wires, and - oh yeah, trees - are some of the obstacles you'll need to avoid. At times, people, too.

Basketball courts, playing fields, roads, driveways, walkways will often serve as part of your fairway.

The first two thirds of the course is primarily open, with one or two of the aforementioned obstacles to avoid. Elevation, and increasing distance, provide the challenge.

The fairway for the last third are gravel access roads, which do force a variety of shot shaping, as the trees are fairly dense along the sides of these roads. Hole-18 plays through the heart of the complex, between the main buildings.

Favourite hole: Meat/fishhook #9. Do you hyzer under (picnic tables) or over (branches/wires) or go to the left of (backstop) the roof of the shelter? Then, do you try to turn before (trees), after (dowslope) or over (height) the small utility building guarding the basket?

A bit nostalgic, a bit fun, worth a bagging, but probably not a revisit.

Quirky 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 16, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good signage. Nice scenery on a plateau where baskets #7 - #12 are located. Beginner friendly pars.

Cons:

Very short teepads lead to drives being thrown with 1 or zero steps. The fairways for holes #13 - #18 use single lane gravel/paved camp roads which cuts the fun and chews up your discs.

Other Thoughts:

This course is apparently intended for casual play by church campers. Still there is some utility for players beyond a beginner level as baskets frequently are located at the fringe of rough so distance control is emphasized and camp buildings and facilities as well as camp roads that are in play emphasize accuracy.
In an odd, quirky way it kind of works. The micro teepads limit or eliminate a runup but the distances are achievable (hope you practiced your Beato drills) and you probably won't be running hard at the single chain baskets because they're often perched on the edge of unfriendly rough (at least the sticker bushes had blackberries on them) . A course map or a good study of the signage is essential especially for locating baskets #5, #9, and #15 and finding the tee for #13. The early baskets were unnumbered and from the #5 tee it appears you should play to basket #6, and #9 looks like it might play to the #12
basket. Among the peculiarities I encountered during my round were from the fairway deliberately throwing an approach shot over a building and through woods rather than continuing along the fairway, throwing 5 consecutive shots with a putter (for birdie!) to navigate a twisting fairway down a gravel road
through the woods, and playing a finishing hole fairway right through what appeared to be the village square for the campground and out a road on the other side. Overall not a destination course but thanks and a tip of the cap to the Eagle Scout project that lead to this course and to the Evangelical Lutheran
church camp for allowing play when campers are not present.

On the hillsides of Camp Nawakwa!!! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 4, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The course is very navigable. Each hole has a tee sign that is accurate and a basket with a next tee arrow. It is a beginner friendly course especially the front 9. The course is well maintained a bit of rough within 10 meters of some baskets, but for a new course it is beautiful.

Cons:

There are a few holes that play through another. As well as a hole or two where the next tee pad is in close proximity to the basket,

Other Thoughts:

The tees are a wooden box filled with mulch 3 to 4 feet long. I liked it played the course while wet and had no issues with footing. It is awesome after the years i have spent working at the camp to see baskets. Back in my day we had to pick buildings to hit!
