NE coachman 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 18, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

Concrete Teepads, Teesigns. Lots of trees for shade.
Not crowded.

Cons:

No course map at the course

Other Thoughts:

NE Coachman course is a relatively small but fun course, the average length per hole is less than 300 feet. This is counterbalanced by the fairways being tight and technical on every drive, with lots of trees and bushes coming into play on flat terrain. The shade was very welcome from the summer heat. Its still open enough that if you get into trouble off the teepad, you can recover fairly easily. The teepads are narrower than normal, about 3 feet wide, and having a whisk broom for the sand would be a good idea. There is a walking path on several holes that comes into play. Also a small creek on holes 7 through 12 that you need to stay out of. Midrange drivers are a must have on this course.
I didn't think there was any teepad drive that was unfair or restricted by "too-tight" alleys to shoot through. Some of the tee signs show their age, and are missing information, but you can still get around the course without a map. Getting from hole 12 to teepad 13 is tricky, I was told about this beforhand by some very helpful locals who walked me through the course before I started. There is no course map at the parking lot where you start, so just talk to someone in the park and they will be more than willing to help you. You can play this course in less than an hour, unless you are taking your time. I would take families to this course, or if I wanted to play a casual round and work on approach drives this is where I would go. Someone who wanted to work on their big-arm drives should not go to this course.

Pros:

tight with some distance, good complement to Cliff

Cons:

if it rains back nine is under water

Other Thoughts:

Course is not new and shiny but is a great round after Cliff. Tocobaga is much more of a beautiful experience as a tight course, but this course is more than worth it. Would play it frequently if I was in the area but is not one of the most beautiful courses in florida. Both previous reviews are on though.

Pros:

A picturesque course that is as fun to walk as it is to play. Large oaks with Spanish moss hanging throughout the course. My wife and I both enjoyed this course. This was one of our favorite courses during our honeymoon. The course is definitely a course that beginners can enjoy as well as the experienced player. Locals are very friendly and don't mind telling you about how it plays and their favorite holes as well.

Florida Suncoast Forest Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 11, 2005 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Nice trees, run of holes along the canal

Other Thoughts:

Another nice Clearwater course, but set up as a different challenge than Cliff Stephens. This course is more in the woods and laid out on less acres than its Clearwater counterpart. Water (canals, not lakes) borders the course on two sides, but only comes into play on a couple of holes. NE Coachman is also shorter than Cliff Stephens, requiring precision over power. The trees aren't too bad though, and the course is well laid out, playing to its strength of Florida forest as much as Cliff Stephens plays to its strength of Florida lakes, without making them overwhelming. Throwing long, low, and straight is the key skill for NE Coachman; the trees demand low throws, and all but a few holes are pretty much so straight-ahead.

Most holes on this course have one set of tees, but some have two, and all holes have at least one long, narrow, concrete teepad. The signs are good and the course isn't too hard to follow. I particularly remember the few holes that play out along the canals, and having to dodge all the beautiful live oaks. The day I played NE Coachman I was torn between going around Cliff Stephens for a second time or playing this one. I made the right choice; it's not as open and dazzling as Cliff Stephens but well worth the trip and a different, complementary challenge.

Favorite Hole - #7 - Long, straight shot with beautiful live oaks on the left, canal on the right.
