Salk Park is Rolling Meadows main park. The South side of the park is well developed and holds ball fields, a soccer field, an ice area, a community center and an aquatic center. About all you see of that development from the disc golf course is the ice arena parking lot and the preschool playground you throw toward on #3. The North side of the park is a flat, narrow strip of land running on either side of a creek. It has a sled hill, a playground, a walking path and a lot of open space. Houses line the park boundary on both sides. The course has new Innova DisCatcher, nice tees and functional tee signs. There are two very good pedestrian bridges and good signage when you cross the creek. Some of the holes have some distance, so it's a good place to air out drives. Hole #4 has an alternate tee on top of the sled hill, which is cool.

Other than the throw off the sled hill, this is a painfully boring, repetitive course. The site is lightly wooded and several of the holes are wide open. Holes #2, #5 & #7 are basically the same shot. Holes #8 and #10 are the same shot, just with the creek on the other side. Hole #11 is the same shot as #8 and #10, only with no creek. A lot of this course makes you think "didn't we already play this hole?" Unfortunately, none of those shots are good enough to make you want to play them again.

The walking path winds through the course, and on holes like #2 and #5 it conflicts with the entire hole. I noticed four times that people walking on the path kept looking back at me, like they expected me to throw on them. I got the impression that this multi-use wasn't working out very well.

The golf is meh. The lack of obstacles and elevation means you basically throw the same shot over an over. The only scoring separation you get is from the difference in distances people are throwing.

The course is 12 holes, but the holes conflict with each other. The area where #6-#7-#8 are is a head-scratcher. There is a long walk from #5's basket to the #6 tee for no reason; the #6 tee could be up closer to the walking path and farther back. With hole #6's basket back where it is, hole #7 shoots up past the #6 basket into an area between #6's basket and #8's tee. All of the holes conflict with each other. #8 is a long for long's sake shot next to the creek that could be shortened to get the tee out of the way. #7 could be pulled altogether or #7's tee could be used for #8 if you were not trying to cram 12 holes into a small space. The course would be better with more variety if it was only 9 or 10 holes.

Given that North Salk Park is flat and lightly wooded, it wasn't going to be a great course. It has the potential to be better than it is, though. I think most people find that the fact that it is 12 holes is a pro, but for me I found myself thinking "is it over yet?" by hole #8. A redesign down to 9 holes would greatly improve this course in my opinion. As it is, the course is boring and repetitive. It's an open spot to air out drives, otherwise it is a waste of time.

The course plays through a small flat park. The sled hill comes into play on the long tee for hole 4 adding a fun downhill bomb. Some scattered trees dot the grassy fairways, adding some obstacles on many of the shots. A few of the holes play along the creek, it could potentially come into play on a bad shot. There is some nice distance on a few of the holes here, offering some chances to air out some drives. The signage is decent, with hole length and layout. The large paving blocks make for a good tee surface.

The park is flat and very open, making this course a bit lacking in variety. A few of the holes seemed like they purposely avoided some available trees and instead opted for the wide open shot. The creek could have been used more to add some risk/reward decisions.

There are major safety issues here. It's a busy park with lots of other activities going on in the middle of fairways. Two different soccer games were going on when I played, causing hole 4's long tee and holes 10 and 11 to be completely unplayable without hitting someone. A couple holes play very close to one another, especially in holes 6-8 where errant shots can easily end up on other fairways.

Beginners will find some length here, but not a whole lot of punishment for errant shots. More experienced players won't find a whole lot of variety, and the only real challenge is the distance on a few holes. It's disappointing to see the continued installation of poorly thought out courses with little challenge or variety and numerous safety issues. It only serves to further the stereotypes of flat boring chicagoland disc golf, and holds the sport back in this area.
