Neighborhood disc golf

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 10, 2024 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Course is almost always in good shape
- Nice concrete tee pads
- On slower days, due to the compact nature of the park, you can play to different baskets
- Clever setup shows that neighborhood disc golf courses can fit into even the tiniest slivers of park land & still provide some good variety
- Free
- Easy to get to
- Plenty of parking

Cons:

- Biggest negative is that there is nearly always traffic on this course with frequent large groups (5+) of stoner types; if that is your scene however, may be a plus
- Road comes into play on multiple shots with a ton of cars parked alongside; not uncommon for certain people to be striking cars with their disc or to be retrieving a disc in the residential road

Other Thoughts:

Come during the week if you can

Do not park along the side of the course (along the road) unless you are ok with your car being struck by a pothead's disc. Either park near the tennis courts (behind the fence which sits next to the practice hole) or a little further into the neighborhood

Great tennis courts here that are sparsely used, if you want to get in a half round of disc golf & some tennis with a friend

Great Way to Use a Small Space

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 26, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

A neighborhood nook that is well put together but has some overlap issues.

-Amenities: Concrete tees, numbered Mach IIIs, great tee signs including a picture of the hole. Some holes had what appeared to be circle 1 or something slightly closer drawn in.

-Feel: Very welcoming. The park is nicely maintained on a moderately busy street and you can see the whole grassy plot from any point.

-Beginner Friendly: Not any trouble to be had beyond some large trees scattered throughout. Other than the road at risk (see below), this would be a nice place to learn the sport.

-Shot Shaping/Gameplay: Despite the limited land, a surprisingly engaging layout with low ceilings, trees, and demanding shot shapes. A good number of holes are ace runs for the more experienced, but there are also some very tricky holes on account of distance or gaps in the low canopy. It's certainly not a difficult course and you'll be trying to go low, but at the same time it's not boring and you'll feel satisfaction with most birdies.

Cons:

-Hole-to-Hole Overlap: Several holes either share fairways or play adjacent with another fairway at risk. Due to this, I doubt the course could hold more than 3 groups at once safely. Also, if a group tries to safari like one foursome did when I was there, you better really have your head on a swivel.

-Road Risk: At least three holes play at high risk of hitting cars parked on the street. Hole (2) is a short one playing straight towards the road and even a slight overthrow could mean dents or cracks. A couple later holes have road on the left for a newb hyzer to find. Yikes!

-Scope: All par-3s on a flat piece of land topping off at 300'. There is definitely a limit to the uniqueness of holes out here.

Other Thoughts:

I really enjoyed Northside - enough to give it two rounds instead of one to wrap up a nagging trip. The combo of ace runs be demanding mid-length shots was fun and motivating, and the grassy park had me very content. The primary issue here is with bad throws hitting people or cars. On the whole, it scored a Typical for boring topography but nice design.

Beautiful park, decent disc golf 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 25, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Northside park is a neighborhood park in the town of Azusa, CA. It's a well-maintained, tidy, and quiet park that features all of your typical Socal park amenities plus a 9-hole disc golf course. Parking was easy to find (I just parked on the southern side of W 12th Street adjacent to the park) and I walked right up to the first tee without any wait.

There were several other groups of disc golfers already on the course. One was just finishing up hole 1 so it gave me someone to follow as I navigated my way around the course. I had a map I printed from dgcoursereview as well, but it's always nice to have a confirmation as well. In the end it didn't really matter anyway, as by the 2nd hole we were all playing together for the rest of the round.

As for the course, it's a great place to bring someone to learn the game. The course is on the shorter side. Most of the holes are between the 200-300 foot range. There are some trees scattered throughout the park offering obstacles for your drives and approaches. Baskets were placed in positions that sometimes required you to decide whether you wanted to go left or right of the tree, but nothing was overly complicated or challenging to work through. The course is relatively flat and over even terrain. Most of it is well maintained grass or sidewalk, so again it's great if you're bringing someone to introduce them to the sport.

Each hole features concrete tee pads, baskets in great condition, and signage. Like most 9 hole courses in the area, I heard there were a number of alternate layouts available for locals who wanted a change of pace. All in all it was an enjoyable round!

Pros:
- Concrete pads
- Nice targets
- Beautiful park and well landscaped
- Accurate maps online
- Variety of hole lengths and types
- Easy parking
- Quick round
- Practice basket

Cons:

Aside from the limitation of 9 holes, the biggest con for me on this course was just the general layout. It wasn't a huge deal breaker for me because I joined a local, but even with a map it's still difficult to know which target you're aiming for. Targets 2 and 9 were the biggest confusion for me. I was aiming for the wrong basket on both of them until a local set me straight.

Secondly, fairways cross each other here in opposite directions. The flow of our round was continuously interrupted because we had traffic coming opposite direction on our fairway. We also heard a few "FORE" calls out there too because it was just too many fairways crossing each other. The park filled up during our round so it was a challenge to stay focused.

My last gripe is actually nothing against the park itself but the parking that lines up along W 12th Street. There were a line of cars parked on the north side of the street near the baskets for 2 and 9. Thankfully I didn't strike any of them, but I'd guess the curb was 20 feet from the basket... well within range of landing for decent players.

Other Thoughts:

Final thoughts... Northside park was fun, but I don't think I'll be playing here again. It's worth a visit if you're like me and just happened to be in the area, but I wouldn't go out of my way to play it. Or if you're just looking to get out and throw some discs, go for it. Park on the SOUTH side of W 12th Street, walk past the playground to find the pad for hole 1, and enjoy! Watch out for other players tho!

Small course in a small park 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 26, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Short but cute neighborhood course in a nice area. Great course for first time players and children. Bring the family.

It is a very small course in a very small area. Design is appropriate given the small space. Seems to bring the limited trees and terrain into play for newer players.

The park has a lot of nice signage and there are signs on every tee. The number plates on the most baskets have nice custom graphics.

Since it is so small and compact it is easy to get in a few rounds. When I played, there were walkers and a only few other people in the park.

No problems using a cart or stroller here.

There are longer local layouts I did not get to play. If there are no other folks on the course, alternate layouts would provide better challenge for experienced players.

Fully equipped restrooms are next to parking area.

Cons:

The holes are short and it the regular layout would not be worth the drive.

Would be difficult to play with any more walkers or park users.

Not easy to follow on first time if you don't have a map or local player.

Other Thoughts:

I was pleasantly surprised by this cute little neighborhood park. It was in a nice area. I felt safe playing alone.

The regular nine hole layout is not really worth a drive from anywhere. However, if you are already in the area, stop by for a quick round and add another course to your "Played" list.

I rated this course by comparing it to other nine hole courses I have played in small neighborhood parks.

Even though it is nothing special, I do plan to go back to play the longer layouts.

Cons:

Very short. This is only because of the small amount of land to work with.

Other Thoughts:

Great for when i take some one for thier first time or for a family!

Nice small, tight course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 13, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Very nice maintained course.Basket placement is good. Nice quiet neighborhood. We wer the only ones playing on a friday morning.

Cons:

Park is small. Hole 7 is a little to close to the tee. Baskets seem to be a little on the small side and tend to spit the disc out.

Other Thoughts:

I took my wife Nina with me and she really enjoyed the course. It is perfect for someone learning to play or just to practice your technique.

Creative holes on a small amount of land. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 4, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

• The course designers did a good job of using, at least, one key obstacle on each hole that keeps the course from being a wide-open pitch and putt.
• Good for players working on their approach game and learners.
• Terrain is flat and easy to walk through.
• Lots of opportunities to create your own safari course

Cons:

• Very short. This is only because of the small amount of land to work with.
• Lots of non-golfers on adjacent walking paths. They did seem to understand what was going on though and didn't blindly walk through fairways.
• Some tee-signs were outdated and did not reflect new pin placements or if they were updated the signs didn't clearly show where the basket was. The close proximity of all the fairways did make this a problem on my first visit.

Other Thoughts:

While this isn't a destination course there was thought put into Northside. It's a decent little neighborhood park and I hope it gets new players to crave more.

One Clean, Safe DG Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 13, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Fun tee signs that have random little hole-specific strategy blurbs on them (albeit no hole map or directions to next tee)
-Interesting use of the trees on the land. Each hole makes significant use of at least one tree, whether it's eliminating a hyzer line or giving golfers a low ceiling to work with. The trees make this course.
-Extremely quiet, clean park. The locals set up camp near hole 1 and leave their stuff there as they play. It is always visible with the flat layout of the park and gives the course a very sheltered vibe.
-Course is DG exclusive, but underused. Makes it a great place for mob golf and ace contests.
-Alternate tees delineated by spray paint on the "Sidewalk Course" make for a much tougher and more rewarding round. Apparently there is a "Gorilla Course" as well. Ask a local. They won't bite. ;)

Cons:

-Flat flat flat. As a pancake.
-Short Short Short. Longest hole is something like 250'. The rest are between 105' and 220'.
-A couple crossover shots could lead to safety issues.
-Baskets are on the shallow side. Aim for the pole!
-Tricky to navigate to. We got a little lost from the bad google directions it spat out and then spent about ten minutes trying to find the 210. One way streets suck.
-I could see some shanks going into the back yards of some of the houses next to the course. The way the course is set up, though, makes it a pretty slim possibility.

Other Thoughts:

This is a quiet, shady beginner course in Azusa. While my biggest complaint about the course is the flat terrain, the alternative tees in particular use the trees to shape some fun lines. The place is as spotless a course as I have reviewed. The locals must really cherish the place. They sure seemed at home, helping us noobs navigate and giving us the scoop about the two alternate course layouts. I won't be rushing back, but I would like to make it back there at some point and try to line up a game shooting the longest configuration.

Great course to learn at and something for the more seasoned golfer as well. :)
