Fun course! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 12, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

A beautiful course. Great open shots over huge elevation changes, nice use of such a small area, great signs, nice baskets, some challenging shots around trees and no crowds!

Cons:

Grass is a little tall in late winter. No restroom on the course.

Other Thoughts:

Very impressed. We stopped on our drive up I5 and it was great to get our legs a workout and play this fun 9 basket course. Would love to play this course again.

Mini Whistlers Bend! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 12, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

I see Oakland as a miniature version of Whistlers Bend. And because Whistlers is my all time favorite course, that means I was pretty impressed with Oakland. To start with, it has the same lovely rolling hills effect as Whistler, only on a five acre plot. Essentially, there is a large drainage gulch which runs down the middle of the course. Because this part of Oregon is a very dry climate, I doubt that this drainage area would ever have water. What it does provide is a wonderful little valley to throw up, over and across and the designers used it to the maximimum. It also means you're constantly hiking up and down providing you, the disc golfer, with quite the little workout.

The amenities are top notch. The Bentley baskets with their orange coloring are cool. The rubber mat tee pads are all perfectly flat and leveled, just a pleasure to throw from. There is a small scorecard dispenser at the beginning. The signs are lovely wooden ones giving the usual info, hole #, par, distance and preferred route. There is a great course map over at # 4, by the street. Also, I printed off the on-line version and it's one of the best, easy to read, on-line maps around. Kudos to whoever designed the maps. There is a porto-potti in the middle of the course for your needs.

There were so many really enjoyable holes.
# 1. 283' along the hillside with quite a few trees to contend with. You have to keep your drive low here.
# 2. 285' down the hill fun throw.
# 3. Easy little 153' hyser ACE run, also downhill.
# 4. 404' uphill and blind to a more boring open basket.
# 5. 336' up the hill passing the volleyball courts. The basket is tucked up in some trees.
# 6. 224' downhill. The basket sits precariously on a ridge with a deep gorge on the left. What's OK about this hole is, while the gorge is deep, it's unforgiving and fairly easy to play out of.
# 7. 387' across the entire drainage area. The tee pad is up high on the hillside and the basket looms high on the other far side. There are enough trees in your way to add to the challenge here.
# 8. 282' downhill shot to an open basket ahead. Possible ACE! But wouldn't be an easy ACE, by any means.
# 9. 323' across the big drainage area again. Similar throw to # 7. Basket is up on the other side of the valley and brings you back to the start.

Cons:

The course is not without it's faults. Holes 2, 7, 8 and 9, all have crossing fairways. On a busy course in Portland, this would be a concern. Here in Oakland? I don't think it's going to get the play to be a big deal. On the morning I played, there was one other couple on the course. We managed quite well, thank you.

A couple of the baskets are set too low, #'s 6 and 8 should be raised a couple of inches.

It's kinda strange having the course map at hole 4. I understand the designers wanted it by the street where it's visible and not by # 1 and the parking area. It is one of the prettiest course maps I've seen. Very impressive.

Other Thoughts:

I'm not one to give 3.5 ratings to nine hole courses but Oakland DGC really impressed me. I'm putting it on my favorites list. It has so many fun downhill throws, sits on such a perfect little piece of acreage and the amenities just add to the overall disc golf experience here.

Yes, there are crossing fairways. You may have to wait for other players to cross in front of you but they would be clearly visible and I don't consider it a safety hazard, just a minor inconvenience.

Oakland is just minutes off the I-5 freeway. Don't drive by without taking the time to enjoy this course!
