Short and straight gets a C-.

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 30, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

.
>Decent teepads and baskets
>Pretty easy to find next tees
>Rec players should have lots of birdie chances

Cons:

.
>An almost disturbing lack of shot variety--many straight shots of similar distance in mostly open areas.
>I cannot imagine how busy the 4th largest university gets when classes are in session, so parking lots, roads, and sidewalks would become real factors on every shot for most of the year.
>Tee signs IN the teepads are a no no.
>1000' walk between holes 7 and 8.
>Parking is likely a pain when classes are in session

Other Thoughts:

.
BASICS:

>Teepads--Grooved concrete, nice condition and I would think they shed water well. Nice and wide, and they would have been long enough, except for the questionable decision to put a concrete placard tee sign IN the teepad, toward the rear of each one, a bit more on the left side. So, if you want to use the left rear side of the teepad, you are out of luck. On some holes, this made the teepads feel a bit shorter.
>Baskets--DGA Mach 2's I believe, decent condition, catch well enough.
># holes--16. This WAS an 18-hole course, but on-going building construction has eliminated holes 1 and 18. I do not know the plans for replacing these, but they will not be the original holes, even if the total does get back to 18 in the future.
>Setting, type of course, fee? Large university campus. No fee to play, but if school is in session, parking will not be free, unless you want to walk over a mile. Not even sure where one would park, because the lot we parked in was not typically open to the public (school was not in session so we parked by teepad for 2, the new 1).
>Ease of getting to--A bit dicey actually--the road one would use is closed due to construction, another road to get to hole 2 is one way, so we had to crisscross a few parking lots to get there, but one could likely start on another hole with no issues.
.
AMENITIES:
.
>Parking--See last section--could be tricky if classes are in session.
>Bathrooms--No (though campus buildings likely have them, if one can get inside).
>Practice basket/driving net--No.
>Water/food nearby--The OSU student strip is 5 minutes or so away, which has about everything.
>Clubhouse/disc shop--No (though Columbus has some)
>Benches--I recall 2, though it is a flat course.
>Trash cans--Some.
>Bag holders--No.
>Tee signs--IN the teepads, hole # and distance, and flight lines that are not terribly accurate.
>Next tee direction/signs--No, but mostly not an issue.
>Wheelchair/cart friendly--Yes, yes. Except for hole 7, which crosses a small narrow bridge.
.
COURSE PLAY:
.
>Shot variety--Very limited. (Biggest con). Most holes are 225'--325', all par 3's, mostly straight shots with little shot shaping. It is frankly one of the boring tracks I have ever played. The last 3 holes offered a little variety, but the damage had already been done. If one can throw a Roc 275' straight, double digits under is definitely a target score. I was actually leaning toward a 2.0 rating just because of the lack of variety, but the last 3 holes, and recollecting the quality of the equipment moved the needle a bit.
>Open/wooded--Open--a few holes have a few trees to work around, most have 1 or 2 at most.
>Elevation--Pretty much forgot-to-fix-the-spare-tire flat.
>Distance of holes--About 180' to 340', mostly in the 275' range.
>Layout, long walks (inc. back to car), loops--One large loop, big walk (1000' or so) between 7 and 8.
>Total distance walked--1.5 miles
>Ease of finding next tee--Great except hole 7 to 8.
>General difficulty--Rec level
>Mud/water issues--No, but dry conditions recently.
>Water or O/B to contend with--Hole 7 has a marshy creek you throw over--it is a short, but blind hole, see where you are going first. Hole 15 throws near a small pond, but again, it would take a big shank or bad tree kick to get wet. There are SEVERAL parking lots which come into play, and likely considered O/B, and if busy, car clanking risk would be high on errant shots. We didn't care, we were trying to break in some new plastic and the lots were empty, but...
>Difficult rough/lost disc risk--Quite low.
>Scrape/scratch risk--Quite low.
>How busy was course/park--3 others seen playing, BUT, if school is in session, there would be lots of foot traffic on the sidewalks, and cars in the parking lots.
.
OVERALL:
.
>Fun/enjoyment factor, would I play again? It was pretty meh overall.
>Who will this course challenge? Rec players who cannot throw straight 250' or more.
>Is it worth a drive? No.
>Anything unique? Hole 7 is OK, but hardly unique.
>Would be a half star higher with--More shot and distance variety.

I am in my 50s, 130 or so courses played, 875ish.

“Parked It” 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 23, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The West Campus DGC at Ohio State is a pretty easy course located right on campus. It's a unique setting for a course because nearly the entire course plays around parking lots with scattered trees.

+ Great textured concrete tee pads with the hole map elevated on the back of the pad. They're long and provide a lot of run-up room.

+ There's a handful of pretty solid holes despite the lack of elevation and tree coverage around the course. The design takes advantage of the space given.

+ Navigation is pretty simple. There are signs to help guide you in a few of the trickier spots.

Cons:

- The setting is about as chaotic as it gets. Most holes play near roads and parking lots that tend to be pretty busy. I'm sure there's plenty of student traffic around the course on weekdays.

- Many baskets are missing their number plate at the top.

- As a result of the setting, the course isn't very special. Sure there's a few fun tosses but like I said earlier, many are flat and open with no real hazards besides the concrete.

- 300 yard walk between holes 7 and 8.

Other Thoughts:

It's cool to see that the space was utilized for disc golf. It's a solid course for a low-tier player as long as you avoid breaking windshields.

Great for Buckeyes 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 19, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

I'm a pretty rank beginner, so clearly I know everything about the sport. /s

This course is part of Fred Beekman Park on the West campus of The Ohio State University. The course itself is on the outskirts of the park and is basically a tour of the student parking lots.

I think this course was clearly intended as a "welcome to the sport of disc golf!" layout. Discs can even be checked out from the Department of Recreational Sports.

As others have pointed out, this course could easily be played with a midrange disc only. As a beginner, I greatly enjoyed the course and I think it could serve as a good introduction to students. It was a nice opportunity to work several different throws and pay attention to form, lest I hit a car.

Concrete pads, and hole are well marked. Hole 8 is probably the only basket you can't easily see from the tee.

Greens are immaculate. OSU Landscaping works their butt off to keep campus in good shape, and this course benefits from their labor.

If you are already on campus, it's a nice way to spend a lunch break on a sunny day.

Cons:

West campus is very windy with ever-shifting winds. I somehow managed to find myself always throwing into the wind. If you're a campus regular, this isn't a surprise.

Not a lot of shade on this course as it is using existing green spaces. Sunscreen will be your friend if you're out in summer months.

Not exactly a con, but more of "urban challenges" on the course. You're almost always playing along a parking lot or road. The aforementioned wind along with the worry of hitting a car/person can be intimidating and make you tighten up.

In addition to cars, there's a good chance an undergrad will walk in front of you. Hole 5 has a lot of extra foot traffic as people walk from the remote lot to the bus stop.

To be perfectly honest, I love this course because I'm a buckeye and it's a ten minute walk from my office. I wouldn't come here on the weekend, and I'd have been disappointed, even as a beginner if I'd made a longer trip (and paid for parking). But then, the course IS designed for the student in mind.

Other Thoughts:

Park has a website: https://recsports.osu.edu/fac...ens-west-park

As many have pointed out, Ohio State's parking lots are private, and there is a third party company that relentlessly monitors the lots for people without a permit. ** You will not escape their wrath** so use a meter or visitor parking kiosks. Since I work on campus, this is a moot point. COTA users could take the #84 right to the first tee.

The course map indicates a practice hole near the beginning. That has since been paved over for parking. There is a nice open cricket pitch if you want to warm up and throw a few long drives.

OSU DGC 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 29, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Conveniently located on Ohio States Campus makes this one of the few courses close to the city of Columbus. Well maintained with nice pads and baskets. A decent variety of holes. Great practice course for accuracy and short game.

Cons:

Roads, cars, parking lots surrounding course. Short course with little to no elevation. Crowded with non disc golfers walking around. Long walks between a few holes and parking.

Other Thoughts:

Played this course a lot when I lived close but not really worth traveling to play.

Pros:

small and fast
could ace almost every hole because they are short
not as busy as you'd think

Cons:

all par 3's realistically.
bust roads near buy

Other Thoughts:

this is a fun small course you can run or play a cool off round after playing griggs. you really only need a good mid range, or a mid and a putter to play. you could realistically ace every hole if your a high enough caliber player (don't have to be a pro, just need some luck)

Not too fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 18, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Very grippy teepads

-Baskets caught well

-Tee signs look very nice

-Variation of short and long tees

-Locals were very nice

Cons:

-The wind was insane, and by other reviews it seems like this is regular.

-More than half the holes had a possibility of throwing into a crowded parking lot.

-Con 1+ Con 2 = Not good.

-The course was extremely crowded, which is good for the game, bad for you.

-Some people were walking through the fairways on their way to classes and had no idea what they were doing.

-No pars on tee signs, not that big of a deal. The signs also had distances marked in yards.

Other Thoughts:

I liked the idea of some of the holes, but they were next to impossible to play because of wind as well as avoiding the parking lot. The one time I got to play this course without bad wind was very enjoyable, but I've played it a couple more times with wind being a major problem. It's unfortunate that this decent course has to have this problem.

Pitch and Putt, Crazy Wind sometimes 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 21, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Pretty Good Baskets
Extremely Grippy Tee pads
Grass is maintained well
Good practice course and place to bring your beginner friends

Cons:

Extreme wind on alot of days since there is so much open space due to the parking lots
Parking costs alot which they've just raised to $1.50 an hour
Students are there yes, but most are aware that there's people throwing around, not a huge deal
Every shot is RHBH hyzer shot, which could be a plus if you're a strong RHBH thrower

Other Thoughts:

I've played this course a ton since I live on campus. If it's not windy it can be fun. If there is wind, you can look at it two ways: 1. Great way to learn how your discs fly and how to control the wind. 2. Zero fun because your discs go anywhere without your knowledge.
I don't mind the students, you just wait until they pass and throw, no big deal. There are alot of ace runs and really you could play the whole course with a putter if you only wanted to carry one disc. I would like to see a mix of shots like some anny's along with the hyzers, but it's not a bad place to work on your game.

A Change of Scenery 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 17, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

*Cement tee pads
*Signs
*Very easy to navigate.
*Urban setting
*Great putter and midrange course
*Takes about an hour and 15 minutes to play. Easy to squeeze in two rounds on a tight schedule.
*Has 300' holes mixed in.
*Well maintained.

Cons:

*Heavy traffic toward the evening hours. People walk through the fairways and it can add time to your round. Most of the people seem to be clueless or careless about walking around the course.
*The windy conditions can turn your disc into a dangerous projectile if you're not careful. Every hole gives you the potential to either hit a car or a person if you're not careful. Added pressure!

Other Thoughts:

Hole 1 parking is the most ideal place to park. When coming off of Kenny rd. Turn onto carmack and take the first left. If the parking lot is completely full, you can keep trucking down to the second left and park back there. This would have you starting on hole 7. I've done this a couple of times.

When it is windy, watch out! I've almost drilled a crowd of people with a driver and my buddy has nailed a moving car with a disc that is on a hyzer. This course is a change of pace with the urban setting. It's beautifully maintained and offers some thick brush you need to stay away from hole 7 through 10. Other than that, the course is open, but crowded with campus life.

I would recommend playing this course if in the area, but griggs, hoover, and alum creek offer more of a challenge.

A Tight Windy Urban Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 10, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very well kept, has nice baskets, good markers. The tee pads are different, lots of extra traction. Nice short grass, leaves taken care of during the fall.

Cons:

Parking is a pain, the course doesn't have a nice flow and new players have to be aware of signs to find some holes. The tee boxes could be longer, and the signs for the tee's are actually on the box itself. This can interfere with your approach depending on your shot type. Very very busy, i wouldn't recommend going there on a weekday during class times. Lots of cars to avoid. I even had people walking through some fairways in front of me after getting off buses. It feels like you play the same hole more than once, not much change between hole styles.

Other Thoughts:

If you are like me, and enjoy the nature aspects of disc golf, then this isn't the course for you. There are lots of cars, pedestrians and roads to watch out for. Rather than being in a nice out of the way course, and enjoying a quiet relaxing round. You find yourself trapped in a busy urban area. I would recommend that someone looking to play in this area would much rather enjoy playing Glacier Ridge Metro Park, or Griggs.

Well Groomed 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 1, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Very Clean
Easy to Navigate
Great Teepads
New Baskets
Always Kept Mowed
Great Tee Signs

Cons:

Parking (Pay Parking and Debit or Credit Only)
Holes Measured in Yards
Not A lot of Variety
Very/Too Open
Plays Around Parking and Vehicle Traffic
Pedestrians Will Get In the Way
Benches Are On the Tee Pads

Other Thoughts:

I have played this course several times as it is only about a 10 minute drive from my house. It is a fairly nice course, always kept clean and mowed. Teepads are very nice, concrete tees with drainage grooves that keep water off and add a lot of traction.

As for the layout of the course, it could be a little better. A lot of the holes are medium to long hyzer shots, a few of them have some trees that can cause you some trouble but sometimes it can seem like you are playing the same hole twice in a row. Now this course can be a whole new monster if the wind is blowing. The course is basically built in between a lot of parking lots and the wind can rip through the open space and give you lots of added challenge, or frustration depending on how you look at it.

If you are in the area and have time, check it out, but if you have limited time in the area I would recommend Hoover (Brent Hambrick Memorial), or Griggs Reservoir over this course. If you do decide to play this course, watch where you park. Most of the parking near the course is reserved for students and faculty and requires a parking pass. There are some visitor parking spaced to the right of the basket for 18, which is the first basket you will see when you come into the park. It is metered and $1.25 will give you 1 hour and 15 minutes, which depending on how fast you are and if you have to look for any discs this could be plenty of time. Usually me and two friends can play this course in this time. There is also some visitor parking in the lot behind hole #1. It is also pay and you must locate the pay box and get the tag for your car.

There are restrooms and disc rentals located in the tennis center (red building next to the first tee). Score cards and a course map also available at the first tee and there is a practice basket nearby.

THE OSU Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 14, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is right on campus, so it is easy to get to and quick to play.

The tees are amazing. You will never slip on the tee, ever.

Every hole is extremely well marked, though I would not suggest relying on the distances given or the "preferred line".

There are a few holes that are fun to play, and on a sunny day you can really enjoy yourself here.

Good learning course for beginners and those who want to practice controlled drives and mid-range shots.

Cons:

Built around a parking lot. There are many opportunities for you to hit a car, a bus, a person, a person on a bike, etc.

Really simple. You can throw the same thing, over and over and over. Most of the holes have the exact same approach and distance.

Always windy. Of the 50 or so times I have played, only a dozen have been with no wind. I guess it is hard to escape in central ohio, but still.

Busy. There is almost always someone playing, and on nice days there will be at least one backup due to many people at one hole. Many groups come through, and most are slow moving.

Other Thoughts:

Nice little course, but nothing special. Really easy to get to off the highway, and within biking distance of OSU main campus. Watch out for geese poop everywhere, but other then that, there is nothing to fear.

Decent beginner course on nice campus 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 15, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

Great tee pads with built-in signs showing an image of the hole and length. Not much rough/ivy/thorns etc. Well designed and quick to play. Well mowed and maintained.

Cons:

Parking- for non students, there are just a few spots and they are metered, might not be available. Short, with a few wide open holes with no trouble.

Other Thoughts:

Could OSU designate 10-25 spots in a far corner of one of the many empty lots as disc golfer parking?
