Beautiful well designed course for the space 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 2, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

My home course is basically bulldozed out of the woods, so this review is probably slanted towards the positive. It is very scenic, clean, good signage, nice baskets and tee pads. I thought the design was well thought out utilizing multiple lines and shots with two tee pads and two baskets on each hole. It was a good mix of hyzer/straight/turnover or rhfh flick shots. Everything is par three even if it is 440ft. I like it. I only throw 300-320, but I think a good long par 3 that takes a great shot to birdie is a good thing. Wide open off the tee but having to navigate trees/bushes many with a low ceiling closer to the basket. There was enough variety to keep me interested.

Cons:

Some direction about which tee box you are going to on next hole would be a good addition. No big deal but many times I walked to the next box and then had to walk to the correct one for me since this is essentially a 9 hole course with two distinct tee pads to make it a 18 hole course. There was nothing else negative for me.

Other Thoughts:

Overall I loved it. Beautiful neighborhood and course. I will play here every time I can when I'm in Charleston.

Great variety of distances and use of trees. Excellent use of land. Hats off to the crew who designed this course. A++ job.

Fun playing the Circle! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 2, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

*All Innova Discather baskets in great shape
*All concrete tee pads
*Easy to navigate with good signage.
*Great for any skill level with variety of distances
*Great layout- for the small amount of land used.
*Good buffer zones between holes because of the roads.

Cons:

*Very busy, with generally large groups of players. Because of the extra tees. and baskets the flow of this course can be very slow paced.

Other Thoughts:

Even with the flow of the course being slow, I really enjoyed this course. The great holes and variety of distances make this a must play course. Many locals are very nice in giving tips if asked and the use of a map is not needed due to the circle layout. Must Play if in the Charleston Area. One of the coolest course, I've ever seen.

Ring Around the Rosie 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 29, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Layout - This is a very unique course that is squeezed in between the outside of a traffic circle inside a square grid with incoming roads dividing each area where holes are placed. The landscape is a park style area with sparse trees, bushes and... shrubbery.

Each hole has two tees which are usually put as far left and right back as possible considering the landscaping. So in essence because you're going counter-clockwise around the circle the right back tee is longer, especially when going to the left front basket. The two baskets were cleverly chosen so that you can easily distinguish which is which. One set of baskets are discatchers with the yelllow top, the other set is Mach.. somethings.. I forgot.. doesn't matter.

Enough of that let's describe how it plays. So basically to play the "18" hole course you have to go around the circle playing one set of tees then around the circle again playing the other set of tees... but what if you go around the circle twice the first time playing all discatchers then go around the circle twice more playing all the... SHUT UP! IT"S ONLY 18 HOLES READ THE COURSE PAGE.

Sorry... this is the pros right. Okay so if you're playing the left tees you are pretty much always looking at a hyzer line to the left basket or a straightish shot to the right basket. When you're on the right tees you're looking at a straightish shot the left basket and a anny/fh to the right basket... (yes i'm rhbh deal with it)

I do really like how they used the shrubbery to create interesting lines and some blind shots where you're trying to tuck the disc in to pockets of shrubbery. They also create some vertical gaps where you're going under tree limbs or sometimes over shrubbery and under a tree limb. In that respect they used the shrubbery nicely.

Again if you didn't read that good the baskets are sometimes tucked in to tricky areas to create some challenge. You also have to contend with OB (the roads) and shrubbery.

There is some balance in hole length by playing each different combination, the right tees give you an opportunity to throw a driver often; and it's often necessary to hit the low ceiling shots which pop up.

The flow is not confusing just go counter clockwise and look for tees. If you go clockwise you can probably actually still play it but the holes will be super short.. wait.. 72 hole layout? SHUT UP.

Equipment - Concrete pads with signs at both tees and two creatively unique baskets on each hole. There's also a big course map at #1 for those unfamiliar with circles.

Atmosphere - The shrubbery is pretty.

Cons:

Layout - The first time I went around the circle and played the 9 long, throwing two discs to each basket I was like yeah this is kinda cool and interesting and neat and fun for most of the holes and then I was like wait I just keep throwing annys. Then the second time I went around and played the short pads I was like yeah this is now dumb and boring and I can't wait to go play Trophy Lakes.

It may seem like I'm trashing this course but I do think it's decent. It's actually probably the best course you can put outside a traffic circle inside a square with roads running in between it. They did create some interesting lines with shrubbery. It's just that the nature of what it is makes it repetitive, kinda like you're just going in... circles.

Also this is a 9 hole course pretending to be 18 if you didn't get any of that from the stuff I wrote up there. Yes I get it, I see what you did with the baskets, cool, great, nice, but it's still just a 9 hole course with multiple layouts.

Also on several occasions I just about threw my TL in to the road and I can definitely see that happening on the holes asking you to throw 350+ with the possibility of fading out, turning over in to the many roads in which cars can come from all directions.

Equipment - Some of the tee signs are broken.

Atmosphere - You may feel stuck in a loop.

Other Thoughts:

Honestly I think this is a neat course. Definitely different and definitely a good place to work on throwing hyzers/straight through gaps/annys. You can let some drivers fly in to cars if you want. It has a fun factor so I'd honestly recommend it if you're from out of town. I'm sure the locals appreciate it for what it is.

Shrubbery.

Great for what it is 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 6, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is a very beginner friendly course. Most of the holes are quite open but there are a few holes with tighter shots or lower ceilings.

The course is well designed given the limited amount of space available. There are 2 sets of baskets on every hole, and the silvers play different from the golds. While most of the holes go to the left, there are holes that will go to the right as well.

Navigation is fairly easy, as the course goes around the traffic circle. You can start the course on any hole, it isn't necessary to start on 1. Parking is easy and the area is safe.

All tee pads are new concrete and the signage for each hole is good. There is a map showing the line to each hole from the pad, for both baskets.

The entire course is par 3, with most holes being 250-300 feet. The gold baskets have a few longer holes, with one over 400 feet.

Although some of the bushes can be pretty thick, you shouldn't have much of a problem losing discs on this course, so that is another plus (especially for beginners).

Cons:

While it is listed as an 18 hole course, it is more accurate to say it is 9 holes with slightly varied teepads. The second set of baskets does add variety, but it doesn't have the true variety that you get from a proper 18 hole course.

The course is certainly fun to play, but for more experienced players it might not offer the challenge of a more punishing course.

With only 9 holes, the course can only handle 9 groups playing at the same time, and only one group can really tee off on a given hole.

Other Thoughts:

While not a championship level course, this is an excellent place to get some throws in. There is enough variety to keep you entertained and enough variety and challenge that anyone should be able to enjoy this course.

This course is especially good for beginners as it will not punish you like a more technical course will.

Park Circle: One of my favorite 9-hole courses!

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 24, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Park Circle is a very cool, unique course. No matter what the locals say, this is still a 9-hole course. And if the locals are going to say this is a 18-hole layout, they really should claim it's a 36-hole course: 9 fairways x 2 tee pads x 2 baskets = 36 unique hole layouts.
- 2016 updated comment: I really like that some of the gimmicky pin positions are gone. No more baskets in shrubs (#5); no more baskets past a shrub line (#1) or surrounded by shrubs (#8). I also like that some of the angles created by the tee pads make for more natural flight paths for discs. And, the tee pads are FINALLY full-length. Only took a decade for that to happen!
The rest of this review is essentially a copy and paste from my 2008 review. After playing this course for a decade, there's not much new to say.
- Course loops around a traffic circle. Holes play on 8 grass islands between roads. #5 & 6 share an island; other holes play on individual islands.
- 18 baskets, on 9 fairways, with 2 sets of tees gives course a multitude of layouts. As of 2009, all tee pads are now concrete, which is a huge improvement over the dirt tees.
- Each tee pad has a sign making it easy for the first timer to distinguish between 1/10, 2/11, etc. Also list the correct distances to each basket. That had been a sore point in the past. Now, it's a plus.
- Course is essentially wide open, so you can let it rip. Avoid the minimal tree and shrub cover and you're fine. No holes longer than 400 feet.
- Good course to practice throwing, so long as you're not throwing drives 400 ft+.
- Holes are close to each other, so you can easily get a quick round in. You could park anywhere around the circle and begin a round there. Why not start on #4, after driving up from Quarterman Park? Why not start on #5 after hitting up one of the food joints down the road?
- For such a flat, open course, it takes a good combination of length and accuracy for birdies. This is an easy course for an entire round of 9, 18 or 36 straight pars.
- Park's main rec building in middle of traffic circle has restrooms, water fountains and soda machines.

Cons:

Holes are all relatively similar due to the lack of elevation. Also, due to the design of the course, if you throw straight and 250-300 feet, you're going to fill your scorecard up with 3s.
- Many of the alternate tees and/or baskets don't give much change in hole layouts from original tee pad. To its credit, the tee pads are now spread out as far as possible on many holes to give the most variance.
- Due to its repetitive nature, some players are not going to like this course and/or master its layout rather quickly. For the dozens of times I've played over the past decade, I've always loved my first loop around, playing the first 9. Each subsequent loop becomes more arduous. If my in-laws lived 5 minutes away instead of 25, I'd play a ton of 9-hole rounds versus feeling like I need to play 18 or more holes.
- Lack of many trees results in lots of sun, not that shade is going to provide much help during the hot & humid summer days.
- My petty complaint: this is a 9-hole layout. There are only nine fairways. In a tourney, you can only have nine groups teeing off at one time. I have talked with others who have played here expecting to play 18 UNIQUE layouts, and feeling slightly let down they only played 9 holes twice. Do we call Crooked Creek in Chapin, SC a 54-hole course because holes have multiple tees and many baskets have three pin positions?

Other Thoughts:

Park Circle is great for what it offers. With the slight improvements to the existing course, it's the best it's ever been. And it's also a quicker play! After all these years, this is still the best 9-hole course I've played. Now, it's a 9-holer with different layouts.
- No water on course, so only way to lose disc is in big, thick bushes/shrubs. Some of the bushes are really deep, so you may be searching for errant throws for a while.
- Biggest obstacle on course is wind. On windy days, you better keep shots low, or they'll sail away. Even 10 foot putts become challenging in windy conditions.
Wind changes directions as you make your way through course.
- To make up for lack of obstacles, some pins are placed right up next to bushes. On #5 for example, you can be 10 feet from the basket, but have to loft the disc over the bushes to reach basket the basket, thus turning a sure birdie into a more likely par.
- Great course to introduce newcomers to game. I've seen many families, beginners and/or one-disc-throwing players here often. If you're in Charleston and you're introduced a newcomer to the game, this is the course you're coming to.
- Park gets decorated for Christmas. Only course I've played that's been lit up by Christmas lights or had to worry about hitting a Santa display.
- Hardly a visit to Charleston goes by without a round at Park Circle. I've always enjoyed this simple layout. It's convenient to anywhere in the area, leading to much of its traffic. It can't compete with Trophy Lakes in terms of quality. Still, it holds a special place in my disc-golf-playing heart and will continue to be the course I most often play when I'm in town.

Perfectly simple 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 2, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Tee pads are large and uniform, signs are marked well with accurate distance and clearly labeled obstacles. Easy navigation around course. Grounds have been up kept so discs can easily be spotted and pretty much litter free. Tons of parking all the way around. 18 baskets with 36 holes. Uses all of the limited space available. Club members were very helpful

Cons:

Each hole can only be played by one group. Meaning 9 groups total. For the most part you can find the next tee, but a point in the right direction to the next tee would be nice. Crossing the street could be dangerous. Use caution.

Other Thoughts:

This course was vastly improved, it's layout is amazing and simole. You can get in for a quick 9 or okay a whole day. The detail on the tee signs are amazing, and the place really looks uniform. Great job on the redesign John Apsey
