The Course Every City Wants 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 25, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

A diverse, lush, hilly, challenging course in the middle of the city.

-Amenities: Aging but very good. The kiosk has a QR code linking to course map and the current pin locations. Practice basket. Gateway Titan baskets look old but have super heavy chains that catch well and yellow flags to aid visibility. Two rubber tees in good condition and two tee signs with distances and maps per hole.

-Beauty: In summer months, beautiful green forest and pleasant fields in the neighborhood. In winter, there's no green but still a charming woodland atmosphere. Overall, much nicer than I was expecting of a downtown course.

-Elevation: A key element of Perkerson is its constant (except for hole (11)) use of hillage. A lot of side hills requiring angle control, some uphill, occasional steeper drops, and several substantially downhill (and fun!) runs on (1), (7), (14), and (17).

-Variety: About every kind of shot comes into play. Thick woods, mostly open, into and out of woods, OB features, guarded baskets, ace runs, a par-5--Perkerson has a great selection of all types of holes. It also integrates them well by switching between biomes every three or four holes.

-Shot Shaping/Gameplay: As you can guess from the previous two bullets, the gameplay at Perkerson is Excellent. The course is mostly par-3s that require threading a line, dealing with an unusual angle or elevation feature, and/or having excellent touch and control on a drive. However, three par-4s and one par-5 will force you to work on your multi-shot placement game as well. A creek is used extensively from (1)-(3), (11), and (18). The design is really brilliant, presenting excellent incorporation of the foliage and elevation while making every hole interesting. So many holes are fun, some are scary, and none are bad. It's also a challenging course that will require power and finesse to score well from the long tees--you need to know exactly how you're throwing when the lines are this interesting.

-Multi-Tees/Pins: Two tees per hole vary the challenge significantly. I guess the Black tees are advanced level, so having the Reds is a welcome reprieve for players who want to stay out of the weeds. The pin positions update pretty regularly. Several reviewers complained about not having a position indicator, which is justified, but nowadays you can access the locations by scanning a QR code at the start of the course.

Cons:

Only small things here and there.

-Navigation: Tricky your first time. (4)-(5), (6)-(7), (9)-(10), (11)-(12), (14)-(15), and (17)-(18) could all be problematic, so be armed with a map to save time. Be careful with the (11)-(12) transition as it crosses the fairway of (14).

-Pin Locating: Even if you know the position, first time around players may have difficulty spotting the basket from the tee. When bad shots lead to consequences like at this course, it's helpful to know the fairways better than is always evident.

-Gameplay Limitations: The only reason Perkerson doesn't break into the 4.5 range is that it doesn't have enough long holes. I don't get bored of the course, but having only 4 multi-shot challenges holds it back a bit.

-Rough/Beatdown: When you stray off the fairways it's not pretty. Some holes, especially from (7)-(10), have it thick. I've found lost discs practically in fairways here before. When I was a new player, sometimes it was grueling and disheartening to be in the ivy or behind a bush yet again.

-Other Park Users: A lot of folks like to walk through the park and I've had to wait pretty often for them.

-Neighborhood: It's not the finest area of town (I always chuckle when I drive past "Hood-Mart" to get to the course), though the neighborhood immediately surrounding Perkerson seems nice. I've seen stories of car break-ins and conflicting advice on which parking lot to use. I personally have no experience with anything uncomfortable other than large smoking sessions up near hole (7).

Other Thoughts:

Perkerson is a great course. With its outstanding variety, fun factor, and challenge, I consider it to be the best course in the Atlanta metro area. Be prepared for a challenge, but also expect to throw some really fun tee shots and enjoy an Excellent disc golfing experience.

DG oasis in the city limits 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 9, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- The course uses alot of elevation changes and it never feels like the design was forced, thats really just the nature of the terrain.
- All the baskets and tee pads were in good condition. Most of the tee signs were in good condition, except for one
- Red and black tees along with 2-3 pin placements on most holes means there are alot of different ways to play here
- The course layout/design was high quality. Good mix of shorter and longer holes, with a couple par 4 and 5.
- The park has several cool looking outdoor fireplaces that border the fairway on a couple holes
- Natural beauty of the park was very enjoyable

Cons:

- Like many other reviews have mentioned, the park is a bit sketchy.
- There was a surprising amount of trash/litter around the park
- Tee pads are not concrete. I had no problem with the rubber tees (which were actually pretty nice) but should be noted

Other Thoughts:

I played one round from the black and one from red and the combination of really good course design and the natural beauty of the park were the defining characteristics for me

A gem tucked inside Atlanta 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 21, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

+ This is a gem of a course, tucked away only about 10 minutes from the Atlanta airport. A wooded old city park with tennis courts, playgrounds, basketball and baseball - with 18 holes hidden away right in the middle!
+ Great use of elevation
+ Great use of the several creeks
+ Tees are terrific, baskets are adequate if not latest and greatest
+ Go ahead: stand on either tee of hole #2 and admire how they've used the natural curve of the creek to frame the hole.

Cons:

+ Unfortunate amount of trash around the course
+ Two basket-to-tee transitions are a bit tricky (6-7, 14-15), but they're pretty intuitive
+ No way to know which basket position is being used. It's pretty obvious if you can see the basket - but you'll have to walk a ways forward on a few holes to check it out.

Other Thoughts:

There are a lot of comments about the surrounding area. While it's not suburban, it's also not "the hood." It's a working class neighborhood and yes, there are some houses in disrepair. It's smart to park up by the playground and park building. Best advice: see for yourself.

diamond in the rough 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 12, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

I was not expecting much from a neighborhood course just outside downtown Atlanta, but Perkerson Park delivers. After a while of being really pleasantly surprised by each hole, I finally took a closer look at the tee signs and was not surprised to see Houckdesign's logo on it. Let me tell you, on this course- he out did himself.

The park has ample elevation and it come into play almost every hole, but never abuses it. I hate the "throw up/down the hill" holes that make you trudge along hating walking uphill. But none of these were that. The terrain was always interestingly engaged, and competitively strategized.

None of the holes are repetitive, but even better: so many stick out as being great. One of my particularly favorite holes was 14's "Foxhole," a gentle left-right downhill (there's a LHBH line, but i'm not LH). Some holes are lightly wooded field holes, and some through the forest, but the woods holes don't have punishing rough, and unless you land waaaayyyy down the slope, or in a creek, you can still hit par, or birdie with an impressive throw-in.

And just to cover the amenities: two full-size rubber/mulch pads (very grippy, I loved them) on every hole, detailed signage on every hole. Baskets mentioned below. Navigation is pretty easy. There were a couple places I needed to use the map, but just to be safe.

Cons:

To start with the small stuff: The baskets are old Titan Gateways. They actually catch really well, but on one a chain has fallen off, some don't stand up straight anymore.

There are two big hang ups for me on giving this course a 4.5 or better: its condition, and the number of pins. Perkerson Park doesn't seem well loved by the locals, so there's trash almost all over the park, and broken glass everywhere. It's truly a shame because if you could just pick up this course and drop it exactly the same somewhere on a prettier, cleaner piece of land, it may even earn a 5.0 here or there, but easily a 4.5. It's probably the best inner city course I've played so far (65ish total courses)

There are also three pin options on every hole, but only one basket. It can be confusing off the tee when you can't see the basket, and on most holes the three options end up being pretty much in the same area anyway so why even bother? Just to throw 10ft farther? 12ft to the left? It's a lot of confusion for very little change.

Other Thoughts:

I couldn't believe I was having such a good time playing in a huge, wooded, hilly, park just outside the downtown of a major city. If I was a local, i would still play this course every free afternoon I had. Being in Atlanta, you're also an hour away from Hobb's Farm, two hours from the IDGC, so I think Atlanta may be an under-the-radar disc golf destination.

Added To My Favorites List 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 9, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

- free to play, plenty of parking
- high quality, large, rubberized tees
- most holes have dual tees
- multiple pin locations
- quality tee signs: numbered, listed all pin locations, listed distances
- lots of elevation variety
- the course well landscaped, not sure if this may always be the case
- great variety of hole lengths, nice balance
- quality baskets with numbered flags
- brightly marked navigational signs between holes
- some steep sections of the course had built in steps
- mostly intuitive layout, I mistook hole 18 for 15
- a lot of chances for scoring seperstion

Cons:

- benches only for long tees
- tee signs could use pin indicators
- some of the course paths can get really muddy, could use more built in steps
- noticeable trash throughout the course rough, car tires, ect.
- neighborhood was a little sketchy, worried my car would be broken into

Other Thoughts:

Perkerson Park is a hilly, long, park style course mixed with some technical woodsy holes. The soft rubber pads were great, even in the rain. Conditions during my visit were a little muddy, especially in the woods, but it did not stifle gameplay much. I enjoyed just about every aspect of the course, from the long power drive fairways to the short technical lines in the woods, every hole brought unique challenges. The course design did a great job utilizing the park's hilly landscape. The course balance was superb.

My cons are few and petty, but worth mentioning. Walking up and down hill to find the pin placements was more taxing than usual due to the hilly landscape. Pin indicators would have been nice. Sections of the woods were a bit slick due to the rain I experienced during my round as well. You can tell a great deal of work and money has gone into the landscaping. The stone steps throughout the course are greatly appreciated my this disc golfer. Some areas could probably use more steps, gravel, retaining walls, ect. The benches were big and accommodating, although it was a luxury often denied to the short tee box throwers. I see how the park location could be listed as a con, though I didn't experience anything unsettling. My recommendation is to either leave any valuables at home, and or carry them with you.

I arrived on the tail end of a weekend tournament with the course completely to myself. I didn't see another frolfer the during my round, not even in the parking lot. The landscape looked freshly trimmed, the rough was not an issue at all. I found 5 discs in the creek running through the course and am in the process of getting them all returned. Maybe if I play my cards right I can guilt one off the owners into guiding me around other courses in the area during my next visit to ATL. All in all, I was blown away by the overall quality of the course and the amenities. This is easily one of the top courses I've yet to experience, it's just about everything I personally love to see in a course. I look forward to throwing more courses in the area soon.

A true pleasure to play. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 27, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

(4.125 Rating) This course is a true pleasure to play.
- UNIQUENESS - What I enjoyed most about Perkerson Park was the uniqueness and variety in the holes themselves. There are a couple of dogleg 4's, A short but challenging par 5, water elements in play, pocket shots, window shots, tunnel fairways, unique pin placement elements and so on. There are not too many bomb it holes if you're the type that can push it over 400. I did find 15 to be a good hole to let it rip. I also tried ripping it on 9 but smacked a tree. I ended up 100 foot dead right of the tree it hit, and took a 6.
- ELEVATION - A nice amount of elevation changes. A couple up shots and several down shots. However, the max elevation change on any one hole is about 40-50 feet.
- SHOT SELECTION - I probably played 70% backhand and the rest flicks. Most drives need to be well thought out and placed, especially on the holes thru the woods (Holes 7,8,9,10,12,13)
- CHALLENGING - One of the more challenging courses I've played. It will definitely challenge your game as you'll have to tactically attack each hole and be willing to settle or scramble for par and even boggy when things don't go your way. Probably only pros and higher end advanced players break course par on a routine basis.
- CHARACTER - There is fairly accurate hole signage throughout the course. Most of the tees are shaded well and there are two tees for pros and ams at nearly all the holes. There are multiple pin placements on every hole, most with an A, B, and C location. There is seating at a few holes. There is a practice basket by tee #1 as well. The community board however, was void of a course map and any club material. Not sure if it was the day I played or if it's normally that way.
- TEE PADS - Rubber pads of adequate length and width. The traction and footing on them is solid. As good as concrete, or better.
- SPACING - Pretty good, except for the journey between 11 to 12. There's really no shot of ending up in another fairway in lieu of grip-lock or pinging a tree. Tees are generally separated well from the prior baskets but not annoyingly far with a couple of exceptions. 4-5 and 6-7 and 14-15 are all over a 200 foot walk.
- NAVIGATION QUES - There are next tee signs everywhere. Among the most I've seen on any course I've played thus far. It really helped out a lot. I did however have to refer to my phone map a few times though.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - The raw beauty was well above average. Most courses I've played it's just an afterthought... not here. Not every course is so lucky to be partially located on a 60 foot ledge and have a gentle 10 foot wide creek running though it. I'm glad that several pin locations took use of these natural features.

Cons:

I find no major complaints about Perkerson but I'll add a few minor ticky tack things.
- TIME PLAY - Course is not a quick play. Plan to be here 3 hours or more for a group of 4 to complete 18 holes.
- OVERGROWTH - Although I played at a time when the overgrowth was mostly dead, I still spent significant time looking for my disc on the holes through the woods. Lots of leaves just wanted to conceal my disc. I predict the overgrowth must get bad towards the end of the rainy season.
- SKILL LEVEL FRIENDLY - This is not a beginners course. The odds of losing a disc here is probably higher than normal, especially when the overgrowth peaks or when the creek is at its banks.
- LOCATION - Although easy to get to from I75. The journey from the freeway to the park runs through some blighted areas. However, the area directly adjacent to the park itself, appears nice.
- VANDELISM - The hole signage on 11 was heavily damaged. There was also a bit more trash than you'd typically see on an average course. I've read on earlier posts that much has improved in terms of the trash clean-up with the help of the club. So kudos to them in their work thus far.
- PIN LOCATION PEG - I had to run up a few fairways to judge the pin locations. It would be nice to incorporate a pin location peg system at the tee area. I'll add that there are bright yellow flags on top of the baskets to help with locating the basket down fairway.

Other Thoughts:

Perkerson Park is the 50th new course I've played in 2016 as well as my 50th review. What a treat. One of the best of the 70 courses I've played as of this review. If your an Intermediate player or above and in the Atlanta area, you need to play this course.

An adventure in the forest. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 18, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Perkerson park is in a gorgeous forest in the heart of Atlanta, this course was very challenging, which is a pro to me, lots of opportunities to use forehand or backhand, clearly delineated pathways, lots of twists and turns and overall a very varied and balanced course that did not easily give up her birdies to me and my buddy.

Cons:

Random people wandering through the course, the course is partially in a neighborhood where car theft is a little more prevalent apparently, if you catch it right after a hurricane there may be a few leaves here and there.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, I really loved Perkerson park and I'd come here over and over again if I lived in Atlanta. It has a variety of uphill and downhill shots and a lot of twists and turns that make it challenging from either tee it seems (we only did the hard tees). There was a good variety of distances between each hole and the flow to each hole was very consistent also. The only drawback that I could find to the course was that it was only kinda in a shady neighborhood. Just don't be there after dark!

Perkerson Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 19, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Has practice basket

Has rubber tee pads for both tees

Has excellent tee signs

Has many benches throughout course

Has multiple basket placements for all holes

Has next tee signs posted throughout

Good mix of open/wooded fairways with doglegs and elevations

Water comes into play on some of the holes but holes #11 and #18 are the only ones that are really a factor in losing a disc

Challenging, long course with variety of pars

Free parking at multiple locations

Restrooms

Cons:

Baskets are hard to locate on some holes - need flags or bright paint

Some holes such as 5, 7, 9 have rough areas and need more maintenance

Canal running through the course can be treacherous to get in and out of if you throw your disc in

Course design and flow could use improvement as there are long walks between 4&5, 6&7, 14&15, and 11&12 requires crossing over hole #14 fairway

Not in the best of Atlanta's neighborhoods - recommend parking in the lot near hole #4 tee pad

Course can get crowded at times as it's popular with parkgoers and players

Other Thoughts:

This is a nice challenging multi-use course that is the only one with 18 holes inside the perimeter of Atlanta and is tournament-quality. This course is pretty solid and will require a variety of shots to shoot a low score. The park is scenic and well established with tall, mighty trees and a good amount of shade. Playing the black tees are definitely challenging. I have heard of break-ins at this course via Facebook but have not experience this personally. The parking lot near hole #6 seems to be more secluded so I would recommend not parking at this one. Watch out for yellow jackets here...I got stung multiple times after accidentally disturbing a nest on hole #7 while looking for my disc from an errant drive.

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 2, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Solid course with quite a bit of elevation changes and a ton of variety in hole type. From wooded holes to open ones and a ton that are pretty much in-between, you will throw discs down and to the right or up to the left and every fairway is fair. Approachable for new players and interesting for veterans. The design here is really top notch and the play itself is highly recommended. The park is multi-use but the footprint is huge so while you will see plenty of other facilities, none come into conflict with the course itself besides random walkers who just see grassy areas. The course has some solid length and I think most will appreciate the challenge that is provided by the lines that it demands. For those who aren't up for that, the short tees are muchsimpler.

Cons:

Navigation has some rough spots and 1 can be particularly difficult to find. You will definitely need to bring the map with you as many transitions are not obvious. This will get frustrating at times, even with the map.

Other Thoughts:

The course can feel unsafe but you likely won't see many issues in day light hours apparently. However, do not take a cab there. A lot of people may fly into Atlanta and have things to do downtown and it may be tempting to skip out to the course but unless you have a car this is a bad idea. Getting another cab to come out there to get you when you are done is going to be a struggle as they don't want to come out there to get you. If you want a pick up after 18 holes, your best bet is calling on hole 3. Good course but not worth the hassle of dealing with any public transportation in the area.

Pros:

Some really nicely laid out holes; multiple tee pads and pin locations for every hole; nice mix of tight shots through trees and more open shots. It's in a very beautiful park.

Cons:

Wish the creek come into play more than just as a penalty for an overhyzered shot. Some of the holes on the back nine were a little confusing to try to find the next tee pad but I downloaded a copy of the course map from dgcoursereview.com and found them all.

Other Thoughts:

The neighborhood may not be the best but I've played in parks in much worse ones in several other cities. It's a 1 mile walk from the MARTA station but easily doable. It's a real winner and, I think, the only course ITP. You really should play this course if you're in Atlanta.

Great Technical and WIDE open Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 15, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is solid 4.25 course. Better than excellent, not quite phenomenal. It is also a blast to play with some really cool shots. Playing from the black tees, you start with a nice crush from up on a hill, over the creek/valley to basket 350'+ away. Nice way to start. There's two creeks that run through the course that add a nice set of OB lines that quickly come in to play.

Hole 3 is a down hill hyzer shot that if you come it without the brakes fully engaged, you're skipping OB. Fun stuff! Forehands throwers or lefty's, you guys are good.

The course then winds along and up a ridge to hole #6(?) by the basket ball courts. Another fantastic shot is a long fading left shot to a basket down in the trees. Fun to watch the disc fly, then drop out of the sky toward the basket.

For the next 7-8 holes it's picking the sight lines through the trees and executing. Hit your line, putt for bird. Miss the line, putt for 4 or worse!

If the previous 14 holes haven't worn you out, your're good. 'Cause you're about to hit the 'crush zone'. Long Uphill/Down hill and cross hill shots drain the last of your strength! But tough to play 2 rounds from the black.

Also...major, major kudos to the tee pads. Those lowest level of course design was the best I think I've ever played. NIce, poured rubber pads. Very grippy with just a touch of give. Super nice on the knees. Best pads I've ever played on.

Cons:

You have to be careful for walkers. They don't know you're there and screaming 'FOUR!!!' like possessed banshee's will not get their attention. They ain't expecting to be hit by plastic are non-too-happy when it happens. Trust me on this.

Neighborhood a block off the course is NOT where you want to be after dark or with a flat tire. Check you gas and don't leave any valuables exposed. Just sayin'...

Other Thoughts:

Hole one is a bit tough to find. It's below the main building, and across the creek. Following the water, find the tee pad.

Hole 12 is not where you would expect. You have to cross over 14's fairway to find the tee.

15's is back across the creek after 14.

Pros:

-Tough course, not impossible, but gives you the score you deserve. Although a little long for me to have legit birdie opportunities more than a couple of times, it is always fun to play a challenging course.
-Excellent shredded rubber tee pads.
-Multiple angles of attack. I rarely knew for sure whether to throw backhand or forehand.

Cons:

-Could be difficult to navigate without a map, but a map is available if you just take the time to print it out or pull it up on your phone.
-More trash on the ground than I would like to see, including glass. It was better than when I played last summer though.
-As others have mentioned, not the best part of town. I never felt unsafe for my person, but was slightly concerned for my vehicle. I think just like in any city if you make sure not to leave valuables in the open, you would be fine. There were plenty of other patrons including individuals and families using the parks other facilities, so it can't be that bad.

Best in Atlanta 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 3, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Solid rubber composite tees, great baskets. Excellent golf lines through a great variety of landscape. Great use of elevation and existing landscaping, such as the creek that runs through the course in a hand stacked rock walled culvert. Nice signs. 3 pin placements, two tees per hole (usually).

Fantastic start to the course.. Hole one starts on a cliff over the creek, with a challenging long drive (many choices of shot, forehand or backhand as on most holes here) on a grassy slope with scattered large trees guarding the pin. All but hole 11 have some sort of elevation change, sloped landing, or both.

The constant elevation change is balanced.. I never felt like I was sick of throwing one direction or the other. There's a great flow through the more open parts of the park, and up and down the forested hillside.

The fairways never felt lucky to me. There is a definite line on every hole, and it's totally reasonable. Most holes have more than one line which is wonderful. Getting off the fairway is always punishing as it should be, but still possible to save par with a stellar recovery shot, which is very refreshing in Georgia where courses are often carved out of a thicket and the rough is totally unplayable.

Several standout holes that I always remember and look forward to playing again, especially hole one off the cliff, hole two throwing through a row of large pines toward a pin on the edge of an OB culvert, hole 11 which is the only flat hole, needing a long controlled drive to stay out of the woods and the rock walled creek, and the very challenging par 5 hole 18, which requires three perfectly placed drives along one of two routes to birdie or par. This hole can be a score killer.. I've teed off on 18 at -3 and finished the round over par.

Cons:

Everyone mentioned navigation.. I used the map on my phone the first time back when there weren't tee pads or signs and didn't have a problem. You'll need a map of some sort.

Holes 8 and 13 are very similar, and when the pins are in the same position the similarity is exaggerated. Should always have one in the long and one in the short. Especially since 14 is the same shot.. Though I love hole 14, it's the only area where the course feels repetitive. Another straight shot downhill.

An indicator of which position the basket is in would be great. I've seen this on other championship courses (which this is) such as Tyler in PA and it's such a nice feature. No big deal, but helpful when the distances are pretty different and it's hard to tell by eye.

Reviewers mentioned long walks.. I didn't really mind any of them, but yeah there are a couple of longish connections. Again, not a big deal.

Other Thoughts:

I first played this course when it was barely permanent, and have waited to see it finished before reviewing it. I think the designers and volunteers did a fantastic job, especially considering all the restrictions that come with building inside a city if Atlanta park. The length and variety of the course are excellent, and most importantly it's been fun to play since I first started and couldn't break +10 to now when I can get a couple under par. Always a challenge and always rewarding even at various skill levels. I've only played the long tees, but now that there are short tees installed I'd be curious to see how they play. Very nice to have the choice.

I play mostly championship difficulty courses in the northeast, and not only is this the best course in Atlanta, it stands favorably with the other highly rated courses I've played. Really enjoy it and always look forward to a round when I'm in Atlanta.

DG in the ATL, for the win! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 1, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

• Variety: Wonderful terrain has you playing uphill, downhill, over gullies, and on a few relatively flat fairways through a mix of wooded/well-wooded/semi-open holes, over short/med/long distances, with enough twists and turns to make you use every shot in your bag. Elevation brought into play in several ways off the tee and also on pin placements to make you think about putts and approaches. Distances vary enough to encourage using putters, mids, fairways and distance drivers off the tee, with several holes playing longer or shorter than posted due to the elevation change from tee to pin.
• Equipment: Tees of recycled rubber look and feel good under foot and are present on most tees (but not all... yet). Carpeted mats are employed where rubber hasn't been installed yet. Dual tees provide reasonably different looks, challenges, and sometimes elevations. Titan baskets were in great shape, caught well and seemed particularly very heavy duty to perform well for a long time. Lacks decent tee posts/signs (but I won't ding for that as the Course Info page says they're coming).
• Aesthetics: Genuinely a beautiful course that's a pleasant walk in the woods with delightfully hilly terrain, complete with a babbling brook that winds its way through the park, coming into play on several holes. A few have you throwing over it, but it's more formidable on the fairways runing along it. Fortunately, it isn't deep enough to pose a serious threat of disc loss. Nice touches abound, with nicely framed tee boxes and an interesting pin placement on 15 that's up on a hillside, nicely shored up with timbers to combat erosion and enhance eye-appeal. Several bridges and natural steps add ambience while helping you get from hole to hole. I noticed several lengths of stuffed netting and rope which seem placed to fight erosion on some of the hilly terrain.
• Challenging without ever feeling unfair. Some holes are tight, some more forgiving, and most offer a few lines with some being more obvious, but all were quite executable and all present a reasonable challenge. Beginners may feel a bit overmatched on some of the tighter holes, but I'd still say it's reasonably well-suited for beginners to advanced players because of the fact that all holes seem quite executable, and the tighter ones can give beginners an appreciation for what they might reasonably expect to achieve over time.
• Memorable holes: I love the way the creek flirts with you on 2, and pin treatment on 15. 12, 13, and 18 also stood out for me, and 4 was a fun Ace run... your preference may vary.

Cons:

Admittedly still a work in progress, Perkerson's make-over seems quite successful on the whole, and is likely to improve over the next year or so as signs and more tees are installed. Nonetheless, I feel obliged to state the following:
• My biggest beef is with the "drop-off" at the front of a few of the tee pads ... stepping off the front edge of a few tees would prove quite hazardous. Granted, they're so obvious as to not pose much of a "hazard" per se, but they certainly prevent a normal follow through.
• PRINT THE MAP - signs may be on the way, but until then, navigation will very difficult without the map.
• Neighborhood's a bit rough. Locals were very friendly and I had no problems, but it would behoove you to keep anything of value out of your vehicle (or at least out of sight), and to turn down the volume before you pull up to avoid drawing attention to that killer stereo you're so proud of.
• Hard to spot Titan baskets in the woods and shadows - shot of bright paint on the pole would do wonders to enhance visibility.
• Didn't find the short tee for #18.
• A few longish walks between holes, but nothing too bad. Likewise, travelers may need to walk fairways to spot pins, but again, nothing that should affect ratings.
• Leaves, leaves and more leaves - comes with the territory, but it can be tough to find discs that slide under layers of leaves. I won't ding ratings for this, but list it more as a heads up to stock your bag with appropriately colored discs if you can, and that you might want to leave dyed and tie-dyed discs in your car.

Other Thoughts:

Job well done! My thanks to those who've donated their blood, sweat and tears, or otherwise had a hand in renovating this course to make it what it is (and will be): an excellent course and a lot of fun to play.

Because Atlanta is a reasonable destination for DG'ers, and the park is 2 measly miles off I-75/85, it's bound to get a lot of visitors, deservedly so. Even though it won't benefit locals (who know the course well), the effort to make baskets more visible in the woods would be well worth it.

It's still a work in progress and I can only rate what's in place when I play, but most of the improvements affecting actual disc play are already in place, with much of the remaining improvements likely to be in terms of signage (other than a few additional tee pads). Perkerson's one of those courses with the variety, beauty and fun factor that make it better than very good, but lacking the kind of epic feel I need to say it's phenomenal, and earns every bit of 4.0 IMHO.

While there may be better courses in the area, there's a good chance this one's the most conveniently located if you're just passing through and don't have the time to venture anywhere. Even if you plan on spending some time in the area, you'll be glad you came.

Awesome inner city course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 30, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Having played on dirt and concrete pads, I loved the rubber pads. Wonderful feel. Great layout of the course, utilizing elevation gain/loss. Definitely challenging. Great erosion control.

Cons:

Would be nice to have a few shorter holes for some birdie opportunities. Could have cut the stumps a little more flush with the ground. Maybe a more clear marking of where hole one is.

A Gem in Atlanta! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 30, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

The layout - The course design is simply fantastic. It plays through a public park which incorporates a nice open area with nice green grass and tall hardwoods, along a nice old stone channeled creek (no real danger of losing a disc, but you might get wet), and through a heavily wooded hillside. The creek is the centerpiece, and hills rise on both sides. There are holes playing both across and along the creek, as well as up, down, and along the hillsides. There is a great mix of hole lengths as well. Hole 4 is 220 ft with a 20ft elevation drop easily reachable with a putter, and hole 18 is 850 ft uphill through the woods to a basket that is about 30ft higher in elevation than the tee pad.

The Baskets - I am not sure if these are custom built or production baskets, but they are much nicer than what I am used to. There were 3 rows of chains and the thickest basket metal that I have ever seen. They caught discs nicely, and barely made a sound.

Plenty of parking and public restrooms available.

Cons:

There were a few, but most of them are likely to be remedied in the near future. As mentioned by the course description, this course is a work in progress.

Tee pads - The tee pads are carpet, and while most appear to be in their permanent positions, some have flags in new locations.

Benches - There aren't any, and this course is a serious walk. They will be a welcome addition when they go in.

Signage - Since the course design has changed some in the last year, the current tee sings (laminated paper stapled to wooden stakes) are not accurate for several holes. The distances listed on the DGCR scorecard appear to be correct.

The hillside walking up to hole 1 (which is also used to access 3 other tee pads for different holes, looks like it will be prone to erosion issues. Hopefully the volunteers that are putting in this course have a plan for landscaping and shoring up this area. I would likely be slippery after rain, and could really use better stairs cut into the hillside.

Other Thoughts:

I read a lot of the reviews before playing this course, and was very excited to play the new layout. It did not disappoint, and was quite challenging from the first hole to the last.

Several previous reviewers mentioned the neighborhood as a con. While not one of Atlanta's richer areas, I would definitely not call this a 'bad neighborhood'. The park itself is beautiful and peaceful (which is amazing considering its proximity to Downtown Atlanta.

I will definitely play this course again on my next trip to the ATL. Hopefully I can make it to a tournament!

Pros:

Absolutely beautiful park! Some people mention that it is in a sketch neighborhood, but that is not at all the case...Yes, you are in south Atlanta, but the park is very serene and non-discgolfers are only present on the first couple of holes and have never been an issue in my experiences at this course. And as for the course itself, Perkerson has a little bit of everything; great uphill, downhill, left-turning, right-turning, straight, heavily-wooded, moderately-wooded, and lightly-wooded holes! It is a difficult course that will test your accuracy. Also, the creek that runs through the middle of the course adds some extra beauty to the course. If your in the area, Perkerson shouldn't be missed!

Cons:

This course is relatively new, and as such is still somewhat a work in progress. For the time being, the lack of good signage and the carpet teepads (often very short) are the two most noticeable cons. The good news is that there is a group of dedicated golfers that are putting in A LOT of time to making the necessary improvements. I hear that teepads and signage are in the near future for this course!

Other Thoughts:

For the time being, you should definitely print off a course map or try and play with a local if it is your first time here. Great course!

Pros:

A coarse that is short in Ft but is still pretty tough. Tons of elevation. Trees hills and the creek running though the park provide awesome obstacles to make this a favorite of mine

Cons:

#1 can be tricky to find for newcomers. the trails can be a little mushy after rains. carpeted tee box could be a little nicer

Other Thoughts:

i live about a half mile from this coarse so send me a message if you wanna play a round.

Pros:

This course is very diverse and is a great course to challenge your skill set. Great park with lots of beauty! This course has lots of potential and they always seem to be finding ways to make it better.

Cons:

The signage at this course is not all that great. They are working on making this better for the people that have nevered played this course. If you are going to play in the near future and have never played this course, I highly recomend playing with someone that has.

Other Thoughts:

Wish there was Sunday or Saturday doubles at this course. Willing to start the trend if I can get some input on people wating the same.
