fun rec course, if the grass is mowed 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 20, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

-beautiful landscape between the N. Platte River and the Riverside campground, with a great view of Scottsbluff National Monument
-lots of large, mature trees
-fun rec layout with mostly shorter holes but a few longer ones to lean into a driver a bit
-lots of easy holes but lots of well-placed trees too, and the longer holes are well done
-many holes with multiple routes to the basket
-Mach baskets are in good condition
-natural pads are mostly in good condition
-plenty of parking
-kiosk at hole 1 with maps/scorecards in the mailbox
-there were actually maps/scorecards in the mailbox

Cons:

-a few pads are not level or large enough, 12 and 16 i think were the worst
-the grass off the fairway is tough for disc retrieval; after reading some of the prior reviews, i feel lucky the grass was only 1-2' high in most places
-park roads, pedestrian paths, and campgrounds are all very close by many of the fairways; use caution
-it looks like the course can flood easily, the area on holes 3-7 looks particularly susceptible but the whole course sits in low lying areas
-i found the course really easy to navigate with the map but i could see how it could be more difficult when the grass is taller

Other Thoughts:

Pioneer Legends DGC in Riverside Park makes the most of some pretty cool land. The course plays through an area between the campground to the north and after a park road, the North Platte River to the south. There is a great view of Scottsbluff National Monument beyond the river. There are lots of large mature trees throughout and many are used to great effect on several holes.

I was pleasantly surprised to find maps with a scorecard on the back in the mailbox at hole 1. I was able to easily navigate with the map. The baskets are in great condition and the natural pads are mostly pretty good. A few, holes 12 and 16 in particular, were uneven or very short. The red gravel mentioned by past reviewers is long gone; they are dirt.

Holes 3-7 play through a low, marshy area. I was lucky it was dry when I play this summer. The fairways are mowed into the grass which apparently can get extremely tall. It was 2' at most when I played but past reviews describe nightmare conditions. Hole 3-7 were among my least favorite. Holes 2 and 8 are in the same section and I really like the fairway on hole 8. There's a tree directly in line with the basket so you can take the left or right line to the basket and either way there are other trees to deal with to make the green.

This was my favorite part about the course. There are just enough trees to keep it interesting and many are used really well to create challenging holes with options. Holes 1 and 9-18 play near the park road and have lots of clusters of 1-3 large trees throughout that area, except 13, 15, & 18 which are pretty open. I really liked holes 9, 11, & 16. They are a bit longer with well-placed trees and multiple routes. Hole 14 was also a cool spike hyzer.

I haven't played them all but from the looks of it this has to be the best course in the NE panhandle. There's a great variety of lines and distances that's accessible to beginners and fun for experienced players. It's definitely worth stopping to play if you're passing through or stopping here and camping if you're on a longer trip. If you're a disc golfer living in the panhandle and you haven't played here, you definitely should! That said, a fun round here is totally contingent on the grass being in reasonable condition. It could be rough otherwise.

Good For A Pit Stop While Driving Across Nebraska But Comes With Warning Label-You May Be Here A While Searching For Your Lost Discs! 2+ years

Pros:

Just finding the course is this huge park us tricky. The park has everything including a zoo, fishing lakes, summer camp facilities and anything that any other park has. The course has a very, typical useless course information at the beginning. It also has a mailbox for maps and amazingly enough, there were actually course maps in there. My absolute favorite thing about this course is the way cool tee sign posts. They are gnarled, unique looking tree stumps with one place where a small tee sign is fastened on. The tee pads are natural with boards on the side. Most were very serviceable but 2-3 were pretty rough, # 12 comes to mind. The baskets are about shiniest DGA models I've ever seen.

Even with the helpful map, navigation was dicey. I found myself constantly walking up and around trying to locate tee pads.

Holes 1 & 2 play across a field, then 3 to 7 enter the swampy area with mowed fairways and tall, tall grass (like 6-8' tall). I don't know if this is elephant grass, swamp grass or prairie grass but it's way over my head in places. I spent 15 minutes hunting for a disc in it. There were two college guys, beginner types, and their round was taking them forever as they couldn't throw anything straight. I felt sorry for them.

I did enjoy the variety of hole lengths, ranging from 135' up to 445'.

Cons:

The tall grass just off the fairways is a major problem. It could wreck most anyone's round.

The course is difficult to navigate, even with the map.

Natural pads were mostly OK but a couple needed work. Weeds growing up in several. How much play does this course get?

Several walkouts are fairly long.

The area where holes 2-7 play are in a marshy land which must get pretty saturated during some times of the year.

Other Thoughts:

I'm not sure why this course didn't excite me more? I think by the time I got through the swampy area with the high grass, I was pretty well tuned out. I had spent valuable time hunting for a disc in the swamps. I had spent valuable time walking about trying to find different holes. I was just ready to be done with this course and move on down the road. That's not exactly a glowing endorsement for this course, is it?
