Great tight course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 8, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The flow of the course is great, you never walk too far even if you're mixing short and long tees. Most holes do give ample space to hit the main lines, and a few have multiple lines for some gutsier throws.

The shorter hole lengths make the course play much quicker, which was great for busier days. Even behind a larger group I didn't wait too long despite the less advanced players throwing off the fairways. Before you know it you're on 12 and just about wrapped up.

The course was very well maintained and the addition of the astro turf was very welcomed, more courses should look into that to cut out maintenance time when grass starts to grow more. The wooden walkways and stairs made traversing the course much better, never did feel like I was straining myself unless I was off the beaten path on my throws.

It's a great mix of technical shots, distance, flexes, etc. Every hole feels unique and doesn't stale as the course goes on. Despite having shorter holes than many courses I've played, it does not make it any less challenging. Avoiding trees is key here.

Cons:

The course is very tight. One stray throw could compromise the safety of others. Some teeboxes weren't too far off of the fairways of other holes.

A few blind shots, again with it being a tighter course it became a concern of safety. I'd definitely recommend having someone spot just in case other players may be near by.

Most holes are too short, which makes carding Par for less skilled players easier. Many holes were just a matter of keeping the disc in the middle and it never felt too difficult given DGC's par count via Hole Info.

It was a very busy day. Luckily there is hole 1 that could be a hazard to others, mainly walkers on the walking path which was almost directly behind or to the side. Again, one stray throw could mean trouble. The tighter course design meant people were waiting to either tee off or advance to the next hole because of the threat of others straying their throws.

Other Thoughts:

It's a great, quick course that plays fast and isn't too difficult. A good mixture of throws that doesn't get stale and the course in full is very well kept.

Sadly, the tighter design means it is a safety hazard and ramps up as more people play it.

Overall, definitely one to play and test various shots and enjoy quick rounds.

Well balanced course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 7, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Easy to find discs
-Good signs telling you the direction of the basket
-A nice variety of shot distances
-Fairly clean course and little creeks in the forest

Cons:

-A few holes you can't see the basket
-Some of the baskets are placed pretty close to each other and this might trip up some players as to which basket is the right one

Other Thoughts:

This course is pretty well balanced and most of the holes are reasonable. I played well on it and most holes didn't give me any trouble (though I've been disc golfing for over a decade).

Not too long, but a good challenge 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 12, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

I do not get up to Plymouth much from Apple Valley, so since I was in the area I decided to take a peek since it was highly rated. Unfortunately the weather was not in prime condition as it was lightly raining with winds averaging at 25mph and gusting over 35mph. I will try not to let the sloppy conditions put a negative spin on the review. This course is in my opinion great for an intermediate player to really improve their placement game. A mix of very short and medium length holes, but if you miss your line you will be scrambling. If you are looking to bomb drives, you are better off going to Bassett Creek a few miles away. This is a wooded finesse course to test your accuracy.

When I first got there, I saw something I rarely see these days, a map of the entire course! Usually going to a course for the first time I have no idea where I am supposed to go. Case and point, Bassett Creek a few miles away. But here you get a very nice map and hole #1 box right next to it. Each tee has a small metal pole with the distance (if it is the long or short tee) and even a directional arrow to the basket! No real need to guess where you are throwing. Just outside of the putting circle on each hole is another metal pole that directs you to the next long or short tee. Very simple but very effective! In addition you get paths that are traced out with logs to make it even easier to find your way!

The course itself flows very well. The next tee is usually within 50-60ft of the previous basket, so even as a first timer I was able to find my way very easily.

The design of the course was great as it uses of all the space and landscape. There are elevation changes, nothing really steep, just a lot of rolling hills in the woods, making you throw uphill and down hill. There are clear paths to the basket but can be very narrow and punishing if you miss. There are some short holes, like a 141ft hole, but the basket is placed perfectly where you have to get a lucky tree kick or a perfect skip to get a decent putt. For those wanting to toss a long drive, hole 8 is your chance. A 671ft par 5 (it is a legit par 4 for sure) is very challenging as it will test your flick and dare you to throw your disc over a creek the last 250-300ft with a narrow fairway. I was proud my 2nd time through to card a 4 hitting a 35ft putt.

In addition to the flow of the course and the great use of the natural landscape, the course if very well kept. The baskets are in great shape, the tee pads are concrete, you get logs tracing the paths to the next tee with markers, and there are benches/trash cans all over! This helps with the litter as I saw almost none. A pleasant sight to be sure!

The course really tests a lot of your shots. Up the middle touch shots, accurate hyzer shots, flicks, thumbers. There are many different lines and shots to use on every hole on this course. Even being a lefty I felt the course played very neutral, as there are a couple RHBH dominate holes, a couple LHBH dominate holes and most with lines for both lefties/righties.

There are short tees and most of the longer holes, so feel free to bring newer players to the course. Due to the difficulty of the baskets, and the creek that runs through and along many holes, I do not recommend this course to introduce someone to disc golf.

Cons:

With it being in the middle of fall, and the fact you are in the middle of the woods, the ground is covered in a layer of leaves. I did not lose any discs, but I did have some that took a few moments to find as they were buried, so like with all wooded courses in the fall, watch your shot and make note of landmarks in the area.

Not a course to bomb shots. Maybe fairway drivers off the tee on a few holes as there are quite a few 280-320 foot holes, so if you are a pro, mids, if you are intermediate then mids to fairway drivers.

Bring a long stick to get your discs out of the creek! I only had to do this one time my first time on hole #8 (my shot hyzered to late and fell in). Not too deep, but up to 2 feet in places. Great for challenging holes, but sticks if you lose your disc!

Other Thoughts:

Even in the rain I would recommend the course. It was easy to find my way, loved the bridges all over the place, heck they have bridges to get to the other bank of the creek so if you toss your disc over you don't have to jump or back track! For me, it really tested a variety of shots and I ended up throwing different discs both times through the course. For those wanting to take their mid to short game to the next level this is a challenging 12 hole course that you cannot miss! I will have to make a trip back just to play here on a nice day.

Pros:

Beautiful wooded course with a creek winding through. The tees are in excellent condition and have a good size to them, maybe even a little more than you would need on most of the holes.
Tee signs are fairly basic, but do the job. Plenty of shot shaping and accuracy is demanded on this course. The design of the course utilizes the elevation in the woods perfectly which also adds to the playing with your depth perception aspect of the course. Most of the holes are pretty short and can be played with just a midrange and putter. There are a couple of holes that you can kind of open up on, but accuracy is still demanded. You will need just about every shot in your bag out here as well. Super fun 12 hole course that plays fairly quick. Good warm up for some of the bigger courses in the area.

Cons:

No real cons other than it could get pretty muddy after a good rain due to mostly dirt landscape in the woods.

Other Thoughts:

Even though this course is only 12 holes, it is a very fun course. Could easily get two rounds in here in the same time it takes to get one in at some of the other courses.

Rec Course With Enviromental Concerns! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 15, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Starting with #1 throwing the hyser shot around the corner, across the little water hazard and to a green, ARTIFICAL GRASS GREEN. This is the first I've seen on a disc golf course. And then artifical grass starting off the first 100 feet or more of the second fairway. I thought the whole course was going to covered. But I found out otherwise and saw why. This is a major high impact course with lots of traffic. There are two pads for each hole. The pads for the longs (cough, cough, longs??????) are really extra long and nice concrete pads. I've seen so many pro-calibier courses which could use these pads. The short tees are a little smaller than standard. From the shorts, this plays as a Pitch & Putt. From the longs, it's a great Intermediate course. Many tee signs were missing. #'s 5, 10 and 11 were all fun little ACE runs. # 8 is pretty much a killer hole at 600' with the creek in play on your left side all the way. It could easily blow your round up.

Cons:

I squeezed in a round just before dark and the course was still filled with players. I could imagine what it would be like at primetime.

I'd be mostly concerned with enviromental issues mainly ground compaction and erosion issues. I hope the disc golf community is willing to work with government agencies. The indoor/outdoor carpet is a good start.

Other Thoughts:

This is truly a nice little course. 12 good holes is better than 18 holes squeezed in. That doesn't bother me a bit. What does bother me is the fact that the Parks Department has to put up a sign specifically aimed at the disc golfers pleading with them to stop abusing drugs, alcohol and to quit littering on this course. Players, you have to take some ownership here. Pack your litter out! Don't hesitate to pick something up and carry it to the nearest can. This course is a treasure that you don't want to lose.

Only one con I could imagine would be bugs at times of the season.

Good Morning . . . now throw over a raging river for throw #1 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 19, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

1) The design of this course is absolutely top notch . . . it is clear Timmy Gill knows what he is doing up in the Twin Cities because I have now played almost all of the course in the metro area and this is by far the most progressive dis golf scene I have ever seen in my cross country travels. I look forward to my effort to have this sort of impact on the SE WI scene.

2) Awesome variety on this course both in terrain as well as the obstacles.

3) Challenge is ever present even though there are duecable holes.

4) Lots of different lines needed to play well on this course.

5) Artificial turf is used on the #1 green, as well as the first 150' of the second fairway. I have only seen that in a couple places and that certainly takes away the erosion impact of the course on the environment.

6) The wooded holes are fairly clean . . . not a lot of dead wood laying around, minimal garbage on the course . . . just overall a well maintained wooded section of the course . . . at least in comparison to some I have seen.

7) Signs on most holes have Par, Hole #, Distance, and Par. Diagrams are minimal but they are present to show direction of hole basically.

8) Benches, picnic tables in a couple spots, and garbage cans are a nice tough to a course I assume gets a lot of play . . .

9) Lots of directionals on this course to move you to the next tee.

10) Infrastructure is pretty solid with decent bridges, timber stairs, astroturf, etc etc etc . . . something you rarely see on disc golf courses.

11) Wooded emphasis along with one prarietype holes (although it was unmowed), and a water shot or two . . .my type of course.

12) Dual conrete tees are always appreciated and these were in good shape.

13) Hole #8 is quite possibly the most sadistic difficult hole I have ever played. It is a double dogless with a tight gap off the tee, a stream rolling by on the left with a hardpan fairway that will shoot all shots left towards the water. I would put this hole as quite possibly one of the best holes I have played. I took a 7 with a great upshot to park it along the creek and make the putt . . . if only they could do a little beach out in the stream like at Winthrop . . . but that would lead to more erosion and environmental impact.

Cons:

1) Erosion, compaction, and other environmental impacts are pretty rough on this course.

2) Muddy after rain because there is absolutely no cover on the compacted fairways in the woods.

3) Large garbage cans will defintely keep enough garbage to keep the course clean as long as the players throw stuff away rather than on the ground.

4) Logs are used in multiple places to makr fairways or walkpaths between holes . . . I just love this minor detail of a course

5) I can tell this is one of the most played courses in the area. It is in the WE$T $IDE of town so I am sure there are a lot of disc golfing high schoolers. It would be busy most days but it was my second course on the day and I arrived by about 7:00 AM so I didnt have to deal with it, but I am sure it is an issue.

6) Dangerous in a couple spots like #7 throwing pretty near the #8 tee. Skips are always a possibility on this course because of the hard compacted soils.

Other Thoughts:

This course is so close to a 4 it sickens me I cannot give it that rating. While the layout, the design, the holes, the variety, the challenge and even the fun factor are top notch . . . the maintenance and the serious environmental impacts the course is having on the creek and downstream areas has to be extreme. I know this isn't something most disc golfers will notice or pay attention too . . . or possibly even care about. I however, care about the sustainability of courses and not losing great courses because one tree hugger or environmentalist decides to raise a stink about the impact these courses have on the environment. That is why I want to be involved in disc golf course design, because I might be able to catch these things and design and install apporopriately to avoid this type of scenario. It won't always be avoidable, but measures can be taken to minimize the impact. I like what they did with the astroturf on #1 green and #2 fairway, but to really reduce the impact this course will have on the environment, astroturf should line a few hundred feet of the 700' monster #8. I won't preach any longer, but this is quite possibly one of the worst cases I have ever seen for the impact our game has on the environment.

Plymouth Creek 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 16, 2009 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Challenging course. There are a ton of trees here and hole 8 is a beast! (600+ ft dogleg right throught trees with the creek on your left)

Very woody. You are pretty much in the woods the whole time. It's a cool setting!

Water is a factor on several holes.

You will probably have to use some shots you may not use often. I throw a lot of thumbers here to get up over stuff and through really tight trees. Rollers might work well here, but beware of the water.

Signage is very good. It might take a little searching/asking your first time through, but there are signs pointing to the long and short tees. Most teeboxes have signs showing the distance and the direction towards the basket. Very nice.

Dual concrete teeboxes and the baskets are nice.

Not much litter here. There are garbage cans and bags hung up near pretty much every hole. Much appreciated.

Quite a bit of elevation change. There are some nice downhill and uphill shots and decent elevation change throughout.

Cons:

Trees can pretty much kill your round. I could see people getting frustrated here.

The creek can also be a bear. I swear my discs love to roll here, and right toward the creek.

Seems to get pretty busy during prime time.

You could easily lose a disc in the creek, or possibly in the woods.

Other Thoughts:

This is a challenging course, but anyone should enjoy themselves here, as long as you don't mind hitting some trees during your hike through the woods.

The "floor" of the woods, for the most part, is dirt, so you can pretty easily see where your disc ended up. I guess this is mainly due to all the trees blocking the sunlight.

It's laid out well and has good signage, which should help the first-timer. I went solo and figured it out with no problems. (that's saying something..)

Definitely recommended if you're looking for a challenging alternative to more wide open courses!

Classic woods course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 26, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course starts over a creek and between some trees and that really sets the tone for the whole round.

After the first hole, which is pretty open, you head into the woods proper. Hole 2 is actually one of my favorites. A slight uphill shot after which the trees open up a bit ending in a slight anhyzer to the basket (285 ft). It highlights how well though out many of the holes are. Not letting only the trees dictate what shape is required they also use the terrian to good effect and later on a stream to form OB.

There are multiple teepads with pretty good signage. The flow is sensible in most areas. Parking is great.

Later on (hole 8) the creek starts to play a major role in defining the fairway but the holes still are more than the sum of thier parts. On Hole 8 I suppose a 3 is possible and maybe a 2 with an amazing putt but a 5 is likely and I am sure many people shoot higher than that. Normally, giving the scoring range, you might think it is just do to the luck of the hole, it is actually is just because of the smart design. It seperates people that just throw from people that are making shots.

Cons:

This park is heavily used. I have never been there when there isn't a line. The fairways are worn and the garbage is not confined to the cans. Usually I wouldn't include this as a con of the course because it doesn't really affect the play, but in this case it does.

Other Thoughts:

There is a great open multi use field across the street from hole 1. I have used it several times to practice shots or to teach people shots. It is rare to have such a nice space to air it out.

12 holes in a very busy course makes it hard to justify driving there over the other parks in the area. It is well designed enough that I make a point of it a few times a year.

If this park got some love and a few extra holes it could easily move up to 4 stars.

-Great signs, even when you can't see the basket you know where it is.
-Heavy woods make interesting and unique challenge.
-Requires all types of shots to navigate course successfully.
-Each hole is unique compared to other holes on course. Is not repetitive at all.
-Although woods are thick the traffic through there is heavy so losing a disc isnt a problem as long as you keep away from the water.

Cons:

-Dirty stream type thing that is very muddy and polluted so if you throw a disc in there its gross.
-Appeared to be one of the busier parks in the area. You may have to wait on some tees.
-It was a little dirty but other than that and the busyness I have no other complaints about this course.

Cons:
