Rough 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 19, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Awesome course when manicured.

Cons:

Course is in rough shape and hard to play even in the short position

Other Thoughts:

Beginner and intermediate players should probably stay away until cleaned up.
Advanced and pro players will find it very frustrating to play right now.
Lost 2 discs in rough within the circle and 1 30 feet from tee pad from my errant drive.

Oh my, another tree tunnel off the tee 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 14, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice work to get a course into unfavorable terrain. Being aggressive while maintaining accuracy off the tee will result in many birdie opportunities.

Cons:

Inadequate signage. This park is honeycombed with trails and paths branch out in many directions from several baskets. Bringing a course map is a necessity. Holes have very little diversity.

Other Thoughts:

There is a hike between many holes. I enjoyed it but I mention it for completeness for those who don't.
Holes 1-6: The course seemed fun and different as the tight tunnels off the tee into a variety of elevation changes lead to creative thinking about disc and shot selection.
Holes 7-12: The basic hole layout doesn't change much but the distance and difficulty go up a notch. If you miss fairways this course could start to get into your head. But it's starting to seem a bit boring and redundant.
Holes 13-18: A lot of relocation work is being done here. But the repetitive nature of the tee shots has become mind numbing. "Let's see, a tight tunnel going uphill to a blind basket. Haven't I played this hole about 6 times today?" I was tired and hungry and I poached an apple from the orchard.
A long downhill walk after #17 lead to a bench but no tee sign or tee pad for #18. I explored a few of the intersecting trails and never did find the tee. Presumably from the bench you fling your disc straight down the hill and when you get to the creek turn right and you'll see the basket. Don't follow what looks like a fairway going off to the right as you near the bottom of the slope, you'll never even see the basket from that path.

Nice course, but navigational nightmare 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 4, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Front 9 had brick tee pads
Good variety of shots, some elevation changes. Some shots feature a low canopy to add challenge.
Benches on nearly every tee pad
Discatchers in good shape
Bathrooms
Practice basket
Some nice views of the West Virginia hill side including a picturesque view of an apple orchard

Cons:

Back 9 had uneven chunky gravel tee pads
Navigation is atrocious, every basket has multiple paths and no clue on which is the correct way to go. Playing this course was like playing the castles in Mario and trying to figure out the correct combination of paths to get to the next hole.
Tee signs only gave distance for short position, but all front 9 baskets were in tournament long position, no flight paths or indication of where the baskets were and all baskets were blind. I had to walk an extra 2 miles to figure out where the tees were and an extra mile to know where the blind baskets were, this was extremely frustrating and a waste of time.
Tournament longs were just double the length and surround the basket by thick trees, hard to be hard, not fun.
Hole 18's vegetation was overgrown and lead to increased chance of disc loss.
Hole 7 has a split with an open fairway on the right and a wall of trees on the left, and the basket is tucked way behind the trees. Without tee signs you would assume you should drive for the open fairway.

Other Thoughts:

Course desperately needs accurate signage with flight paths and distances. Course needs numerous arrows to guide you to the next basket. This is a young course in a multi use park with tons of potential to be great. you can see that the course is a work in progress with work currently being done, but I rated the course based on condition the day I played it.

Vertically Variable 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 2, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Great variety in which elevation is used - minor and major downhills and uphills, up-n-over rises, across valleys, and, of course, flat.

Part of a nice multi-purpose park, mostly away from other park users, other than those that mistake fairways for walking paths! :) Smattering of benches and trash cans along course. Practice basket and plenty of space to loosen up.

Cons:

Single basket/single tee. Tees are short, and a mixture of natural and gravel, which makes for some slipping and sliding.

Other Thoughts:

The course initially plays steeply up, then zig-zags across, then finally comes zooming down a wooded hill. A couple holes under 200', a couple over 300', but most fall into the mid-200s range. Decent mixture of right/left/no-turning shots, with the right being a bit more sweeping, and the lefts being more subtle and near the basket.

Navigation: The first half is simple, with good tee signs, and more signs near baskets directing you to the next tee. Directional signage ends at #10, as does most of the tee signs - hopefully this will be remedied soon. Some tips: from basket #12, go left, following the orange surveyor tape to find tee #13. To find tee #14, continue straight when the obvious path turns hard right. To find tee #15, go downhill and right from #14's basket. Tee #18, I believe, is a little plateau to the left of the path, just where it turns hard right and downhill.

Hole #11 is nice as you have a sweeping view of an orchard to your left; Hole #12 is the only hole where you have a choice of flight paths; Hole #18 is an epic ending hole, seemingly straight downhill, needing to stay out of the woods to both the left and right.

Overall, a solid course, with some challenging but not overbearing throwing lanes. With Whispering Falls to the north, and Sherando/Signal View to the south, this stretch of I81 provides lots of quality disc golf opportunities.

Update 7/10/11: The first 12 holes now have brick teepads, 6x12. There is a new tee-5. so it has no sign (old tee and sign still available). Hole-18 has a new tee location. A couple of the holes (4, 7) were in different positions than I recall, so the distance information at the sign is incorrect.

nice views but.... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 1, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Near interstate so it makes for a nice rest stop. Nice views. Good workout as there is quite a bit of elevation change. Nice variety of holes. Brand new Discatchers.

Cons:

Weak tee pads. Very short. In fact, I only ended up using a driver on the first hole. Played the rest of the course with Rocs and a putter.

Other Thoughts:

This course plays up and around, then down a pretty good sized hill. Good mix of shots needed to score well but this course is kind of easy and very short. No real driving holes where you would want to let it rip. Longest hole is probably about 280' or so (#1) and most less that 200'. However it is a fun course with good views and makes for a good pit stop if you are traveling on I-81.
