Fun course, definitely worth playing 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 14, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

* Good tee signage, but could be more helpful.
* Green--grass everywhere, picturesque.
* Decent concrete tee pads with benches at most of them.
* Fun obstacles, elevations, doglegs, trees.

Cons:

* No indication of pin positions, leaving one to guess where to drive to hidden baskets.
* No flagging of baskets, leaving grey baskets sometimes difficult to see or find in the grey, overcast climate.

Other Thoughts:

Excellent course, a lot of fun. Low down is, there are lots of elevation shots, wooded areas but no tunnel shots, nice signage, clear paths, benches, and beautiful scenery. Not beginner friendly. Yes, can be cart friendly, but there are some places where you will be pulling up a steep incline.

Now for the deets...

You will need UDisc to navigate this course or play with a local. The signage at each tee is nice, but does not tell you which pin position the basket's in. Many of the baskets are not visible from the tee, so you end up guessing where to drive. It would be nice if the signage showed the pin position. On most baskets, there are directional arrows pointing you to the next tee. And on some of the signage, it also show what direction to take for the next tee. That said, on many tees, you could spend some time looking for them. Use UDisc.

I played in a drizzle and hardly anyone was in the park, so I can't comment on safety or how busy the park is. However, the baskets are DGA Mach 5 baskets, so 24 strands of lighter heavy duty links. These baskets have no colored band and so are grey. In a grey, overcast Seattle drizzle. Good thing it isn't very overcast here many days. [sarc] Therefore, it is difficult to see the basket. Pink, red streamers hanging from the basket would help immensely. On a few baskets, putting a fiberglass pole with a red triangle flag would be helpful as you cannot see the basket at all from the tee due to elevation, or a hill in the way.

This is not for beginners, at least if they do not want to become frustrated. It seemed like most of the throws are long due to the elevations. For example, #9 is "only" 251' but you are driving up a 40'-50' hill. Many throws are like that. There are a couple, like #10, I think, that throws you off because even though there was only slight wind, there are clearings in through some trees where you have a head wind, and of course, sends your disc upward. This happened twice.

This is a very clean park. There was no trash of any kind that I saw. A very pleasant outing in a picturesque park setting. There is a playground with minimal playground equipment. There is also a neat bike/tricycle track for little kids at the park. Brick restrooms are open in the spring and summer, port-a-potties otherwise. Benches behind most of the tees.

I would give 4.5 disc rating if they would improve visibility of the baskets and indicate pin positions. There is supposed to be a pro shop on site, but I have no clue where that is.

Great in town course. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 25, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is my first time in Seattle and my first time in the PNW. I'm in town for work from Atlanta and brought my bag. I'm bouncing around the west coast for a week and decided to try to play every day.

Very fun layout playing the 27 hole Ace run course. Udisc is 100% mandatory. Without it I would have been lost. I was lucky to talk to some locals after the pond on hole one and they let me know which layout to follow. If this hadn't happened I would have been hosed. Playing 27th holes, all of which are aceable is a lot of fun.

Cons:

Playing this course without Udisc and knowing what the layout was would have been completely impossible. Fortunately, it seems like there are a lot of locals out at any point in time and they are more than willing to help you out.

Other Thoughts:

Playing this time of year (mid July) where I'm from in the south is always brutal. Even when starting in the late afternoon. Here locals were complaining about the heat, but to me, low 80's and low humidity felt GREAT. Locals were super welcoming and more than happy to point the way or burn you down. Highly recommend.

Little bit of everything 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 16, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

I used every type of shot I know on this course, it is challenging on some holes, fairly easy on others, each hole is an entirely different challenge which makes this very fun to play. The rough is pretty forgiving. There is also a good amount of open space to get creative. Hole 1 is an awesome start hole over the water, builds you confidence with a small water gap. A few holes with space to let one loose, some holes need touch shots.

Cons:

No signage at all, find some regulars and follow them. There is a great map at the start but after that it is hard to find your way.

Take me back! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 1, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Beautiful setting, great variety of elevation shots, wide open fields and tight trees, left and right bends and straightaways, the perfect practice putting green, a pro shop with a great selection of discs and a pro behind the counter. A basket of lost-and-found discs, too.

Cons:

While the baskets are all numbered, I think, none of the tee pads are, and the map under the "Links/Files" tab here is seriously outdated. There is an up-to-date map sign at the parking lot, though. If you have a smartphone, take a photo of that for reference. Today was my 3rd consecutive weekend playing there, and I still had to pull out the phone once to verify my next tee. Two fairways are tight up against baseball diamonds. It's embarrassing to drop a disc into the outfield during a game.

Other Thoughts:

I live over an hour north of Seattle, but drove down three consecutive weekends to play here. I hope to be back next weekend. So many of the courses around here are mostly flat, but this one forces you to consider how throwing down or up will affect the curve of your flight. Even the practice putting green is on a slope, the 3 baskets forming a triangle, so you can practice those tricky upward and downward putts. (I bought 4 matching soft putters here to tune up that part of my game.)
NOTE ABOUT THE PARK NAME: While there is still at least one small, blue sign on SW 108th St, pointing down 10th Ave SW, toward "Lakewood Park," Google Maps and my Waze navigation app both call it "Lakewood Disc Golf Club." To add to the confusion, when you reach the park entrance, you'll find an official sign reading "Thurnau Memorial Park." You're not lost, this is the place.

Pros:

Great course. Play very early on a Sunday (afraid of crowds). Using the map made following the course fairly easy, although we did throw at the wrong basket on a few holes. Friendly locals pointed us in the right direction a few times.

Really like the rock benches and tee pads.

Cons:

None, experienced other than getting turned around on the last few holes.

Great Course for an out of towner! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 22, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Challenging course, with lots of different types of holes, so I had to utilize all my discs and tons of different shots.

Pro shop was clutch! I dropped my keys by the first hole, and a nice person brought them to the shop for me. Tells you a lot about the kinds friendly people playing the course.

Cons:

A bit crowded when we went. We got stuck behind a family playing with 5 year olds and it took a while for them to let us pass. It opened up after that.

The course was dry due to the drought, but still playable.

Only some of the baskets gave directions to the next tee, so we found ourselves getting lost from time to time. I guess there's a map online, so if you can find that, some other users said it's helpful.

Other Thoughts:

My girlfriend and I were visiting from Illinois, and boy this was an awesome course to play, coming from the Great Plains/ Midwest. Hills and forests?! We have some in the Chicagoland area, but nothing as exciting as this course. We loved the design and wanted to play the course twice.

great all around course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 24, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a really fun course. I really enjoyed the elevation changes and the mix of hole lengths. The basket placements were all great, and the tees were up there with the best I've ever played on. I played this course visiting some friends in Seattle and would love to come back and play it again.

Cons:

The only con I have, and it's a rather large one, is the difficulty of navigating the course. I don't think I could have made it through without the map in the uDisc app. I believe I only saw one or two tee signs and none of the tees themselves were marked as to what hole they were. Some of the baskets were also mis-numbered causing even more confusion.

Other Thoughts:

Don't let the course navigation deter you from playing here. Do a little research first by getting a course map, or use uDisc to find the tees. It's a great course.

A course worth your time 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 3, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Forested slightly, with trees here and there, but still very much open. A good course for beginners or experienced players alike.
- The elevation varies a lot, giving you a chance to work on your throwing strength or even technical shots, seeing as there are a few baskets right on the edge of steep hills. It's a great challenge, but might be frustrating for newer players.
- The tees are concrete and smooth, with some even offering places to sit.
- Onsite pro-shop. I didn't get a chance to browse this as much as I wanted to, since I was playing during closing time, but the fact that it's right at hole #1 is awesome. They also offer maps for the course, costing $1, which was really handy. I will be visiting this shop again soon during regular hours for sure!
- The baskets are numbered with a big red sign on top, and most of the baskets have a "next hole" direction sign on them.
- Overall, I had a blast playing this course.

Cons:

- The water hazard can be fun for some people at hole #1, but I didn't' trust my throw enough to clear it, so I skipped it. It's pretty big, and I don't have discs to spare, really. However, I've heard their is a disc recovery program or something, so that would be helpful. Perhaps next time I will be more adventurous.
- Even when I had the map (boughten at the shop) and the baskets had the next hole sign, I STILL had trouble finding the tees. Not so much holes 1-13, but the rest were really off the beaten path, and my buddy and I ended up playing holes we weren't supposed to yet. After some time and asking some friendly people, we eventually figured it out. I can't blame the party involved in laying out the course, the map was still accurate to some degree. But yeesh, was that ever confusing.

Other Thoughts:

I will definitely visit this course again, not just for the pro shop, but to actually play it through the way it was intended. People were friendly all around, and we never had issues dealing with garbage or anything like that.

My "home" course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 17, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Well manicured grounds, good pin placement rotation, pro-shop on site, lost disc program, 20 holes, great tee pads

Cons:

Can get slow on the weekend due to the amount of people playing, in white center, broken glass from idiots not throwing their bottles away

Other Thoughts:

This is a really fun course with 2 holes that play over water. Not too challenging but there are some hard holes. This is a great place to bring beginners as a lot of the holes are wide open and there is plenty of room to throw. My gripes aren't really anything that the people running the course can do anything about like the broken glass. Some people just don't respect beautiful places like this.

I put in white center as a con because from time to time I see sketchy people hanging out at the picnic benches by hole 7 that obviously aren't there to play disc golf, but other than that everyone I've come in to contact here is really friendly, especially the guys at the pro-shop. I am only 5 months in to playing this game and they are pretty helpful with what type of discs would work for me and on helping with some techniques. Great place overall and I would recommend it to anyone.

Winter relief 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jan 25, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

•Nice large concrete tee pads.

•Variety of shots - it got to do it all today. Uphill, downhill, shaped shots left and right, and few chances to wind up and let fly.

•Challenging, without being stupid hard. A competent disc golfer would grab some birdies, mainly pars, and perhaps a bogey or two.

•Accesible by public transportation - hugely important when you are on the road w/o car. 30-40 minutes from downtown.

•Chainbanerz - these guys do a heckuva job working on this course, in spite of King County's lack of interest.

•Pro shop on site - I'm travelling with a spartan bag, and realized half way through my round that an under-stable disc would help. Bingo.

Cons:

Through no fault of their own, the course in in a major state of flux. Confusion reigns when holes are removed, changed etc. Zen is key to enjoying the round.

Other Thoughts:

What a fun time. Keith was awesome, helping an out of towner find his way. The weather was unexpectedly wonderful, upper forties and partly sunny(later totally sunny). The waterfowl were making a racket on the lake.
And the disc golf was very fun. Again, it was challenging, but the opportunity to make nice shots was there, if only occasionally taken on my part.

This is a fun course, not a frustrating course. I'm hoping to try Seatac before I leave, but I have a feeling I'll get my butt kicked there. Not so here.

a great park for disc golf! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 13, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Good hole design and terrain utilization.
- Nice teepads & baskets. I liked the natural stone shaping of the teepads. They were plenty big enough and grippy.
- Good mix of open and wooded/technical holes.
- Solid diversity of left / straight / right / uphill / downhill shaped holes. It has it all.
- Nice pro-shop / vending near restrooms.
- Friendly locals who call you on lost discs and turn them in to the shop.

Cons:

- long walk from 18 back to parking lot.
- the walk to hole 9's basket (across water) forces you to cross right in front of hole 10's basket where people might be throwing. Just be careful there. The holes themselves are good and there is no other way to get over there so not much can be done about this.
- While not jaw-dropping perfect, I can't really pick out too many other flaws.. The course had to be re-designed due to construction and development on the back of the property. A local showed me the terrain and fence-line back there and it looks like the course lost some really nice space.. bummer. But I applaud those who did the re-design.. Still an excellent course by all means!

Other Thoughts:

I had a blast at this course. The Deaf Disc Golf Championships were going on and we had to wait for them to finish (enjoyed watching them for a little while), but the fact that the Chainbangerz club stepped up and hosted such a tournament is nothing short of awesome!
I also lost a disc, got a call back the next day and Dana from the shop actually opened it up afterhours JUST to give me my disc back since I was on my way to the airport to fly home. Very cool of her! Keep doing what you guys are doing out there! I can't wait to come back again someday.

Getting Better All The Time! Now 20 Holes! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 22, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Lakewood is a real gem of a course. My home digs are a testament of love, sweat, tears and I hope I don't sound too biased in my review as a result! The land that Lakewood sits on is gorgeous rolling grassy hills and a mix of Madrona and fir that shapes the fairways. The fairways play mostly open but require a mix of power and finesse, as there are many OB perils such as fences, roads, lakes and sidewalks that will penalize a poor shot. Scoring can sway both ways depending on how much game you bring. You can bring your longer drivers here, but also bring your accurate short range game as some pin placements can be testy on sloped ground.

Though many of the new holes are shorter, I find them to be a lot of fun. Holes 1-3 (in short position) are now a string of birdie runs. But don't get distracted - hole #2 was a playoff hole in the recent Battle of Seattle tournment and this hole was won (and lost) by an Open player who failed to sink his 28' birdie putt, slightly around a guarding madrona tree!

The tee pads and benches are unlike anything I've ever seen before. The Chainbangerz disc golf club finally raised the necessary funds to create these marvelous gems during the (ongoing) remodel. The benches look like large worn stones and the teepads are long, grippy, and are bordered by a curved edge that adds a more natural look. The bench on #13 is called the amphitheater as it resembles old Roman stadium seating.

There's now a small pro shop (Chainbangerz) near hole #1 that you can replenish you thirst and lust for plastic - hooray!

Cons:

FLOW - When you finish #13, you must walk back along hole #11 and turn right at their tee pad to get to #14.

As it stands, hole numbers and distances are yet to be carved into the tee pads, so it's your best guess as to which hole you may be playing and how long. I suggest you print a map or obtain one at the disc shop by hole #1 and 6. They do now have "Next Tee" signs on the holes, but I only hope that vandals do not remove them.

Other Thoughts:

The course, as others have noted is a notch easier than the original layout, but I think many of the replacement holes (2 that go over the water), are really a lot of fun, and require accuracy more than strength.

By the way - for those who are weary to throw over the pond on Hole #1 - there is a drop zone on the edge of the parking area (it's a concrete pad in the shape of Washington about 40 ft. from the short pin). If you wish, you may take a penalty stroke and tee from this position instead - and it's possible to par the short pin from there!

As many improvements are corrected, my rating will go up. I was fortunate to be part of the first re-design crew and feel that we were able to preserve much of the old while bringing in some new flavors.
