Time Flies Like An Arrow 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 22, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

(2.084 Rating) A small park style course with a big hill and a bunch of water.
- ELEVATION - I played all three Oshkosh 18 hole courses in the same day. The biggest elevation play in Oshkosh by far, is Hole (16) here. I think it plays 40 feet down from the top of the hill. Being able to chuck a disc 400 feet to the basket will be a thrill for those that max out at 300 feet. It was personally my favorite throw on the course and I chucked more than one.
- TEES - Really great tees, which was something that I wasn't expecting. 6 feet by 12 feet with a foul line extension. Every surface was in great condition. It made me wonder how they could put so much time and money into one aspect, but then they had no money for cheaper items like benches, signage or alternate basket locations. Perhaps they are coming next.
- ACEABILITY - Players are five times more likely to ace here than a normal course. A handful of shots are under 200 feet and another handful of obstacle free shots are in the low 200s. I'd be willing to bet that regulars here rack of multiple aces a year.
- QUICK PLAY - I blew through this course in 45 minutes. Figure a four-sum in an hour and a half. Very few walks walk between holes are over a 100 feet and searching will be limited to trying to retrieve one from Sawyer Creek.
- NAVIGATION - OK. A photo of the course map should be able to get all players through the course near seamlessly. For those that didn't take a photo and don't have some other map source, it could get interesting. No directional cues on the layout other than the placard above the basket indicating direction. Tee signage is just a numbered post.

Cons:

Too much course in too little space.
- MISSING BASKETS - There were three missing baskets during my Thanksgiving round, holes (7), (11) and (13). On (7) I threw figuring perhaps the basket was tucked in the distance tall grass. But as I got to my disc, I noticed a worn patch of grass about 40 feet ahead. Sure enough, as I got even closer, I found a pole hole. From reading the course description, I guess it's a winter removal thing, but why November?
- DESIGN - Trying to squeeze 18 holes into this space causes lots of problems. I would agree with another reviewer that this may have been better as a 9 hole course. Tees and baskets are too close to each other in numerous instances. Ball field fences and a water park fence are in play. I wish the other side of the river was used. Perhaps the designer was not allowed to go over there. Another thing regarding the design is the shortness and amount of water. Many higher skilled players probably wont like this set-up due to the length, while newer players won't like the amount water. There is going be a small niche of players that this layout will appeal to.
- NATURAL BEAUTY - The shots along the river are all nice plays, as well as the top of the hill throw on (16). After these elements however, the course is kind-of blah. Way too many featureless shots. Other park amenities are in view just about the whole time. The best beauty in the park is on the other side of the river where no holes exist.
- CHARACTER - Other than excellent tees and adequate baskets, the other common adds are not present. The only tee seating is on the first hole. There's a community board with no info, other than the course map. As stated above, signage on the course is limited to a wood post with number. I saw some faded sharpie distances on a few posts. There are no alternate baskets, tees or practice basket.
- LACK OF CHALLENGE - I didn't play well but I attribute that to 25 degree temps and 10 to 15 mph winds. Other than water on 6 of the first 9 holes there is nothing to challenge a skilled player. I think an 850 rated player should average 1 or 2 down.
- BEGINNER FRIENDLY - Despite the lower than normal difficultly level, this course is not beginner friendly. I'd personally be short at least one disc and perhaps a second had the creek not been iced over.
- UNIQUENESS - Honestly not too bad. As noted already, a big hill and water plays. However, too many open shots. I counted 9 tee shots without a tree in play. Players that like shot shaping woods plays, won't like this course.
- LOOSE DISC OPPS - I skipped one off the ice on (3) back into play and also clipped some heavy overgrowth on (6) sending it to the middle of the creek where I eventually found a long enough stick to grab it off the ice. Players that aren't cautious or are inaccurate will lose plastic.

Other Thoughts:

A quick little 18 hole course. I'm sure this course has a local following, but outside of that, there is no reason to head here unless you are trying to bag courses. I would advise beginners to stay away from this course as there is just too much water and they will likely lose all their discs.

Would be better as nine... 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 3, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

18 holes in Red Arrow Park.

DGA baskets, all in decent repair. More below on these.

Nice, grippy concrete tee pads. The ends were somewhat arrow shaped, which helped quite a bit finding what basket to throw to.

A few interesting shots here, helped by a river that winds around the edge of the northern side of the park, and a former garbage dump hill on the south end.

Navigation was surprisingly intuitive, especially since it's mostly just baskets out in an open field.

Cons:

This is mostly a short, open course. More than half the holes are basically open field shots in the 150-250' range. Hole 4 felt like it was about 100'.

No tee signs. Hole numbers are posted on 6' 4x4 posts, with no other information about the holes.

The baskets are incorrectly numbered. It's not hard to figure out where to throw, but it's a bit confusing at first. Also, the baskets are mounted in the center of 6' diameter circular concrete slabs, which is a huge bummer if you actually throw accurate shots. I had one such shot (hole 3), in which I hit the concrete under the basket and had the disc skip up and out into the river. Just a horrible idea, and completely unnecessary.

A couple of the holes play VERY close to a baseball diamond. Hole 18's line basically curves a couple feet from the outfield fence. Hole 13 also could be an issue if a drive got away from somebody.

Other Thoughts:

This could be a really cool 9 holer, but instead is a pretty bland 18 hole course. Holes 3, 6, 14, and 15 are decent, but everything else is just a basket in a field, with very minimal (if any) obstacles.

There's also a nice looking bulletin board at the beginning of the course...with nothing in it. A course map would be great.

The park also has baseball diamonds, bathrooms, and a city pool in it. Decent place to take the kids to swim, while you disc.

While I wouldn't go out of my way to play it again, I have to imagine some cool safari holes could be worked out here. Don't go out of your way, but if you happen to be next door, you could do worse.

Most Diverse Course I have ever played 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 20, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

1) This course has the ultimate in variety. It has a handful of really short technical holes through tight wooded areas. It has a couple long open holes. It has elevation up, down and on baskets on or near slopes. It has some wooded holes, a couple with some length too!

2) Although it is called "Garbage Hill" the sledding hill adds some character to 3 or 4 holes on what would otherwise be a very level park.

3) Tight wooded holes add some character and give you some risk/reward shots.

4) All tees have a post by them, but some of the signs are missing.

Cons:

1) Maintenance is lacking. It is obvious this course gets a lot of use or has in the past with little to no maintenance.

2)Tees are rutted out. All paths in the wooded areas are wore down to clay soil.
3) Underbrush is evident on some holes, but that really defines the fairways on the technical holes.

4) Trash is really evident along the river, which happens on all rivers, but regardless takes away from the course.

5) Course could use some signage directing which hole is next in a couple places. The design took the smallest amount of space and made the most of it, but that can lead to some confusing routing!

Other Thoughts:

I give this course a 3 overall in technicality, variety, and fun factor. The maintenance takes the overall grade down to a 2 though. That means the maintenance would be rated 0. It is by far the worst course I have played in terms of tee areas, signage, garbage, and overall turf quality.

I am glad I played this course, but if maintenance isn't improved I might not ever go back. Although if I wanted a variety or practice I would certainly play this course again.
