Beautiful Park-Scrubby Desert Course! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 16, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Red Mountain Park is really a lovely park. However he South course play completely in the not so beautiful desert scrub while the North course has more than half of it's holes playing in the desert area.

The South course has nice concrete tee pads and great tee signs. They do feature an arrow showing where the following pad is but half the time I forgot to check and still had to hunt around for the next tee. I appreciated places where locals had constructed little arrows out of rocks to help guide us first timers.

Many of the holes seemed to be in the 300-400 ft, range. Almost all of them were basically straight shots. I guess with all this low shrub it would be hard to design holes with any doglegs.
As with all the Phoenix area courses I've played this week, this course was 100% vandalism free! No grafitti! There was a small amount of trash left here and there, mostly plastic water bottles and Big Gulps. C'mon guys! Pack em out!

Cons:

The wind was definitely a factor this morning. It was blowing quite strong and greatly dded to the challenge. Straight hole after straight hole becomes repetitious and a little boring after awhile. I played the two courses back to back so that adds up to 28 holes straight of straight holes!

Other Thoughts:

The course is OK. I just don't see myself getting real excited about playing here. it's hot, dusty, and visually unattractive. Sorry, I really enjoy playing disc golf in nice surroundings.

Pros:

This fairly flat desert landscape is on an area that has very low pedestrian traffic which is good and bad but a trade off none the less. Baskets, tee pads and signage are good. The combination of winds and distance make the course challenging

Cons:

Baskets are constantly hidden in an attempt to make it interesting for locals but makes it confusing for new players. I have never agreed with this design strategy on par 3s.

Other Thoughts:

Course needs a lot of artificial OBs and fairway borders to make it more interesting. they could also add more benches or colored rocks to better define the course.

Nice Course w/ Room for Improvement 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 6, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This course has really large brand new tee pads and very nice new baskets. The holes are challenging with a surprising amount of vegetation and large trees for a desert course. The baskets are fairly well protected by the trees. It also looks like there is plenty of room to perhaps expand the course with alternate basket locations in the future.
Red Mountain Park itself is a beautiful park with excellent amenities. It's a great family area so bring the wife and kids to hang out by the lake and then go huck a few!!

Cons:

The biggest problem I had at the course was navigation. The flow is not intuitive. Even with a map I had some difficulty locating a few holes. Signs would really help (I do understand there is a fundraiser in the works to alleviate this). It would have been nice to have each tee pad marked as to which hole it was. It's an issue which could have been seen to at the pour.
Stickers, stickers, stickers. As Psicko said be sure and watch where you place your bag. I wish I had worn long pants even though it was hot out.

Other Thoughts:

I enjoyed playing this course and I will be back to play it again (and play the North course as well).
If you are not with someone who has played the course before be sure and print up a map, you are going to need it!
Please remember to bring ALOT of water, you WILL need it!
With just a few tweaks (mainly signage) this could easily be a four star course.
UPDATE: Six months later there are now sign posts, but no signs. A few of the baskets are marked, but no tees and none of the signs are marked. Even on my second time through I had a hard time navigating this place. As long as the South course stays so confusing, I'll stick to the North course.
