Fun course, weird layout 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 4, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Excellent variety of shots.
-Beautiful Park
-For the most part, well marked and easy to follow paths from one hole to the next.

Cons:

The layout:
It is technically a ten hole course, with two tees for each leaving you with twenty different holes. This wasn't really a problem for me since I was playing on a weekday morning, but if you were trying to play on a weekend, I would imagine it being hell trying to avoid other golfers.

Good variety of holes 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 23, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course has a little of everything. Up hill, down hill, valleys, water worries, tunnle shots, left and right turns.
It is mostly a dedicated park minus a walking trail that runs through but doesn't go accross a fairway.
It has a practice basket that is right next to the parking lot with some table to let you warm up and get ready.
A couple trash cans on the course really help.
Fairways are usually well maintained as well as good baskets in place.
10 tess but can really play as a 20 with multiple tees for each basket.

Cons:

The course can get a little busy in summer and packed.
A longer hole or two would be nice but being in a limited spot I know why there isn't one.

Other Thoughts:

Good local course to work and picking your spot and throw.

* Signs are well placed and very helpful as well.
* Well maintained.

Cons:

* Be careful if you just started playing, lots of ways to lose you disc if you don't pay attention to where it landed.

Other Thoughts:

* Hole #4 is lots of fun!

Nice Course W/Great Amenities! Thanks! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 24, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Red Oak Park is just another of the Twin Cities stable of enjoyable courses. This one is so well maintained and signed that it's almost easy to forget that's it also a pretty nicely designed course. The course is not long but well laid out through the mostly small thickets of trees. There are two clearly marked pads for each basket. Note: That does not constitute a 20 hole course! That means this is a 10 hole course with two teepads for each baskets. Hence a 10 hole course still. Clear!

The pads are wedge shaped and great. The baskets are DGA with the red numbers facing the correct way. The tee signs are super. They're mounted on 8" by 8" poles with probably a 6" by 6" colored sign under a thick piece of plexiglass. Very pretty and virtually indestrucible. Some of the best signs ever. There are wood chips paths to follow and wood chips spread around the baskets. No muddy problems here. Most of the holes are fairly short and then you get to # 9 with it's 357' pretty, natural hyser fairway. Hole # 4 was fun throwing from the top of one hill to a basket on the next hill.

Cons:

# 9 and # 10 are listed as par 4's but they really play as more difficult 3's. The course is recreational in nature as it's not quite a true intermediate course. It was absolutely perfect me-an aging recreational player. It lacks the wow factor or an EPIC hole. Advanced to pro players won't find the challenge they're looking for here. Big armed players will be disappointed that they aren't getting to show off their guns.

Other Thoughts:

This is an EPIC moment for me. This is my 300th review! I want to take this course home with me along with the recreational department/local club to maintain it. The signage, cleanliness, challenge for me, navigational help, baskets, dual tees, design, and pads all join forces to make this one great little 10 hole course. It just misses making my favorites list.

Another great Twin Cities Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 17, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

1) Dual concrete tees on this great course. These are always appreciated! Alternate tees definitely alter the course too!

2) Nice color coded posts to indicate which tee you are looking for.

3) Nice signs on the tees indicated par distance hole # and a map.

4) Nice entrance sign to the park indicating Red Oak Disc Golf and also a nice sign as you approach the first hole, indicating the overall map of the course and each holes layout. It also indicated the course was adopted by the Burnsville Disc Golf Club. Nice to see a local presence on this course.

5) Nice use of elevation on this course, there are some real elevation changes on many of the hole including #4 where you are basically shooting over a ravine, with an overall net elevation change of very little, but the potential differential is huge.

6) Plenty of garbage cans to make sure people take care of this park.

7) Lots of variance in distance on these holes . . . I just always hate playing courses with all the holes in a certain short range of distance. This course ranges from mid 100's up to the upper 300's. This promotes lots of different disc use as well as different shot making needed.

8) Practice basket is available for use by the first tee.

9) Benches available in spots to rest in between drives.

Cons:

1) Quite a few areas on the course where the turf is wore down to nothing and is compacted and will erode. This seems typical for Twin Cities DG and that can be assumed is from the amount of players in the area.

2) Thickness of some of the peripheral areas is pretty rough . . . you are penalized badly, but not just in disc golf also in your body trying to get through those areas.

3) Sounds like it would be busy, but I was there on a Friday morning so I only saw a gew other disc golfers as well as some cross country runners.

4) Flow is decent except for #10 because after putting out on #9 you must walk 100' back up the fairway (and into harms way) and then potetnially cross in front of the group in frot of you throwing from the tee on #10.

Other Thoughts:

This is just a solid course. it is nice design, pretty decent maintenance, great amenities on site and it presents a challenge with each shot.

I would play this course over and over . . .some rounds I would try to get my best score and the next round I would try other crazy routes which are certainly available. Give it a shot sometime try the big anny rather than the straight up the gut shot. Test yourself!!!!

Im not sure why everyone says this is 20 holes . . .it is only 10 with 2 sets of tees. Yes the tees alter the hole but it is still the same fairway for a good portion of the hole so in my opinion why call it front 10 back 10 when it is just 10 holes played from two sets of tees.

South Metro Gem 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 27, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Good mix of shots from open to tightly wooded, righty's and lefty's,
Concrete Tees
Good use of available elevation
Multiple and well marked tee pads for every pin
Benches on many holes
Very well maintained with mowed fairways in the Summer and shoveled tees in the Winter
Good signage
Layout does a nice job of avoiding the pedestrian path that runs through the course

Cons:

Occasional back ups due to multiple pads for every pin
Awkward transition from 9/19 to 10/20
Lacks a risk/reward hole
Needs more trash cans

Other Thoughts:

Redoak Park could very well be a case study for making the most with what you have and stands as a real credit to the Burnsville disc golf club. Situated on a small parcel of land the course feels much bigger due mainly to use of multiple tee pads for each pin. On seven of the ten pins the change of tees greatly alters your drive while only three (1/11,4/14,6/16) feel redundant due to changes in length only. The course flows well from hole to hole with the exception of the transition from 9/19 to 10/20 which requires a switch back down the fairway of 9/19 and then requires the player to cross in front of one or both tees on the fairway of 10/20. The moderate length puts Redoak within the range of beginners while it's technical features offers the advanced player many opportunities to hone their skills. The course is constantly being improved upon with new amenities seeming to appear with each new visit. It's hard to have a bad day at Redoak and is a must play if you're in the south metro. Also check out the Rack Shack on Cliff road on you're way out for some tasty post-round chow.

It's just like 20 holes, only with half the baskets 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 7, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Lots of elevation and trees
-Concrete tees
-Nicely maintained
-Good baskets

Cons:

-No multi-shot holes

Other Thoughts:

This course has 10 baskets with two tees per hole. The tees are numbered such that you would play one set the first time around and then the other set the second time for a total of 20 holes. There are a bunch of fun shots to be had on this course as you throw up, down and across the varied landscape. The course flows very well from one hole to the next as there are well-defined trails connecting them. While there is a multi-use recreation path that winds through the park, the course does a good job of avoiding it. I found it strange the decision to make it 10 holes instead of the standard 9. This might have allowed one or two par 4 holes on the course and then used the the extra one as a practice basket. That aside, it's a very enjoyable course to play.

Some of the tees are a bit muddy following rain

Burnsville DGC does a very nice job of keeping this course up! It's a nice compact 10-hole course with second tee boxes to give a 20-hole feel.

Nice Wooded Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 7, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Great Scenery
- Nice challenge with good sized hills and lots of trees
- Tee boxes well marked

Cons:

- Was crowded. Was 5th group in line to go at 7:00 PM
- No Distance/par markings at the holes
- Some of the tee boxes were slick with mud
- Back 10 holes are almost pointless. Most just add 20 feet or so to the front 10.

Other Thoughts:

A very nice course nestled in the woods. It's a tough course if you have trouble staying on or near the fairway.

Long Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 18, 2010 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Because they put in two tee boxes for every hole there is a total of 20 holes to play. Nice mix of left and right handed shots as well as long and short.

Cons:

It is nice that there are 20 possible holes to play, but that doesn't leave room for shorter tee boxes when I take my wife out.

Other Thoughts:

Signs with par to go with distance would be nice.

Fun and Challenging 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 28, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Beautiful setting in the woods. The fairways are groomed well and the rough is pretty rough.

Challenging enough for more advanced players, but not overly intimidating. A good drive in the fairway will serve you well here.

Good signage. The tees show the length of the hole and there are signs pointing to the next teebox, where it isn't obvious. Big plus.

Dual teepads. This is great, because you can play a full 18 on the 9 holes. The alternate tees provide a different look at each hole. If you can't have a "true" 18, this is the best alternative. This is great stuff!

Nice and secluded. It's a fun trek through the woods.

Baskets are all good.

Holes are varied. There are short and long, open and technical, but they are all challenging and most importantly fun. The longest hole here is 440' I believe.

Some birdie opportunities. Always important!

Can see the whole course in about 30 minutes. (not including alt. tees)

Cons:

Could be frustrating if you toss a few into the woods and spend some time searching. 2 feet into the woods could mean you have no shot.

Teepads are dirt. These are not terrible, but they can be slippery. I haven't played here after a rain, but I can imagine it might get slick. I've slipped a couple times when they were bone-dry.

With dual tees you sometimes you don't realize there's a group waiting to play the "alternate" hole.

Disc-thieving ninjas* They tried stealing my disc twice from the fairway. This was the most deliberate attempt at disc-thievery that I have ever witnessed.
*Note they were probably 12 yrs old, but still..

Other Thoughts:

This is a really fun and challenging course to play. If you like a wooded course that also has plenty of open space to work with, with a variety of long and short holes that reward accurate tee shots, this might be the course for you! I would highly recommend Red Oak if you are in the area.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 15, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Each hole is challenging in it's own way. The course is done very well and while it is small, you feel like it is much larger because of the sumac and tree cover. Having 18 tees on 9 pins is nice because you can get familiar with the course a lot faster and each tee box offers a new challenge. Long holes as well as short holes make it easy to throw a good score as well.

Cons:

While it is not a huge issue, the tee boxes are dirt which sometimes makes teeing off a bit challenging. While league nights are fun, there are too many people playing for non-leaguers to be able to play because there are only 9 pins.

Other Thoughts:

Don't be afraid to go into the trees. I have never lost a disc but I found one yesterday! Fun course for beginners and veterans alike!

Huge improvements! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 21, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The course has been redesigned in 2009 and is now VERY playable. In the past this course was mostly overgrown with blind shots to heavily vegitated areas. The fairways are now mowed and holes are very well-marked. 9 pins play with 18 tee boxes for an interesting 18 holes.

Cons:

The course can be VERY challenging on some holes - I have walked off from frustration once or twice. On some holes the tree cover changes down the fairway and makes for difficult-to-read gusts of wind.

Other Thoughts:

League play on Thursday nights at 6pm is a great time! Very well run.

Considerably Improved 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 4, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course offers some distance and what I like best is that it presents an opportunity to utilize a variety of shots.
The recent improvements have DRASTICALLY reduced the time spent looking for discs thrown off-line.
Go ahead and throw your favorite discs!

Cons:

No concrete tee pads and there are only 9 holes. It would be nice to have the holes be a bit longer for those like me that can throw 400+

Other Thoughts:

There appears to be room to add at least 3 or 4 more holes. I'd like to see a few more holes on this course.
