A Charlotte Classic 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Feb 28, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Multiple tee/basket layouts for good variety keep the experience fresh. The tees are concrete for good footing.

Fairway shapes have plenty of variety, with many right and left turning holes, and a few that have options for either. The use of topography here is also excellent, and adds to my enjoyment of the course. It's a wooded course, but isn't terribly tight.

You don't need a big arm, or even drivers to play the original layout, and it is a good place to try out super class discs, or take newer players just learning to throw golf discs.

For someone of my ability, there are lots of birdie opportunities, I broke par for the first time on this course.

Holes 9 and 18 bring you right back to the parking lot, so you've got options if you only want to play 9, or play 9 more, and it's nice if you want to stash something in your car, or if you forgot something you need to grab.

Being one of the busier courses around, there's usually someone friendly around to join you for a round. Even if you're playing here solo for the first time, the course is easy and straightforward to navigate with signs at every short tee, and a sign at the first tee stating long/short basket locations.

A practice basket is located along with a kiosk with course maps and scorecards directly behind the first tee.

There are lots of benches around, and trash cans abound, keeping up the parks clean appearance. Clean bathrooms are located right by the parking lot.

The beautiful park setting gives a secluded feeling on most of the holes.

There are plenty of other things to do at the park, including basketball courts, soccer/cricket field, softball fields, and a dog park.

Cons:

Being the closest course to UNCC, it gets crowded, and you can expect to wait at a few holes.

The DGA Mach 3 baskets are difficult for me to see. Some, but not all, of the baskets have a round yellow number plate on top, which make them a little easier for me to locate. Mostly, though, the baskets just blend in to the surrounding trees. The last two times I was there, the outer chains on basket #16 were disconnected from the bottom ring, but it caught fine for me.

I didn't notice any signs at the long tees, but they're usually not very far from the shorts, so it's not a real big con.

Being Charlotte's oldest course, and with as much traffic as it gets, the soil on a lot of the course is not in the best of shape.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course that I really enjoy playing. It's well worth the trip for a round, a must play whether you live in the Charlotte area, or are just visiting.

Not the best in Charlotte... but fun! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 23, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Wide Open Wooded. Reedy, like Kilborne TPC, is a wooded course with wide open fairways. (20'+ wide, shaped fairways through trees). Get offline and you'll pay with a tough recovery attempt, but hit the gap and you'll get a realistic biride shot/park job.
- Scoreable. (Note: when we played the course, the pins were in the short positions). The original layout, in the short positions, is begging to be birided. Big scores can easily be had (-10+). After showing my ass for the first 13 holes, I birdied 5 of the last 6 to get to -5.
- Two Looks. Like many Charlotte courses, Reedy offers two teepads, and sometimes two pins, on every hole. Therefore, there are "two" courses: Original and Stout, with the Stouts usually being longer and/or quite a bit tougher.

Cons:

- Break-Ins. When pulling into the park you will see a large sign about leaving valuable items in your vehicle... it's no joke. Apparently they have break-ins there all the time. I don't know how often "all the time" is... but, it's often enough to have a sign. The DG parking lot is secluded at Reedy and this probably leads to the criminals feeling safe.
- Crowded. Because Reedy is probably the best beginner friendly course in Charlotte, it's packed. There were large groups all over the course. We started early enough and didn't really have any trouble, but when we finished our round and walked back to the parking lot, Hole 1 probably had 4 groups waiting.

Other Thoughts:

- Aces Anybody? Midway through the round I said to the rest of the group, "This course is begging to be aced". All of a sudden on the hole behind us a kid bangs his first ace. Two holes later a guy in our group bangs his first ace. And then on the 17th Hole, I bang the center of the basket and it spits.
- Overall, it's a pretty fun course and I can see why it's crowded. Lots of decent shots, good FAIRways, scores to be had, and easier than the other Charlotte greats.
- My Rankings. If you're planning a road trip to Charlotte, here are my rankings (of the courses I've played): Renny, Hornetts, Sugaw, Kilborne, Reedy, .....................Veterans.
- My Score: -5

I Play It At Least Twice A Week 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 9, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Wooded, yet open enough for letting discs fly.
Woods provide shade.
Close to University of Charlotte.
Usually not difficult to find unfortunately thrown discs.

Cons:

It can get crowded.
Most holes are fitted for a right turning throw, especially on the back nine.

Other Thoughts:

Hole 14 (the one next to the cricket/soccer fields) has an alternate tee. Above the concrete stands, to the left looking down at the field, is a tee that juts off of the sidewalk. It provides the only truly open shot of the course where you can throw it as hard as you can. We play it a par 5, but probably should be a par 4.

Old, but still a great course. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 31, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Concrete tee-pads, great variety, not alot of trees down the fairway on most holes, which keeps it pretty fair for even the most novice of players. Original tees plus "Stout" tees make for a great day whether you are a beginner or feel up to a little bit more of a challenge.

Totally wooded, so it provides great shade through the whole round which is good on those hot summer days! Not a far drive from other Charlotte area courses (i.e. Kilborne, Sugaw). No thick bushes/thorny brush that makes it hard to retrieve a disc (like "Renny" across town).

Wildlife abounds here, which is a plus for me. There is nothing like having a course which is in almost total seclusion to give a feeling of "near-serenity".

Restrooms are across the parking-lot from the practice basket near hole # 1's tee-pad.

Cons:

Sometimes when I go there it can be REALLY crowded and it always seems to be I get stuck behind that SLOW group of folks that are playing just ahead of me. That's just my 2 cents.

Also, it seems to have alot of erosion on the fairways of most holes....It can get pretty muddy after a heavy rain.... Watch your footing folks!

There is a possibility of ending up in some water on the left side of the fairway on hole #4 if you play it from the "stout" tee on that hole.

Other Thoughts:

I like the fact that if I only want to get in a quick 9, you have that option due to the fact that hole 9's basket is right near teepad #1.

You have to love this course even though it is one of the oldest in the area. This one and Kilborne TPC is where I spend alot of my time.

UPDATE:
I wish more people would stop being lazy and learn to PLACE THEIR TRASH WHERE IT BELONGS, or pack it out! I am starting to see more and more trash out on these fine Charlotte courses and it just pisses me off. Most of Charlotte's courses are not without garbage pails. There should be no reason to leave your empty beer bottles laying right next to the teepad when there is a trashcan right there next to the bench (on most holes). Grow up people...

WARNING!: LOCK your vehicle up and leave valuables in your vehicle OUT OF SIGHT. I have heard and seen evidence of numerous vehicle BREAK-INS while playing on this course!

Good Practice Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 11, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-This course is one of the best courses in the Charlotte area to just take a Putter and a Roc out and practice with those disc. All the holes save a few long dog legs when longer baskets are used are reachable.
-One thing I really like about this course is that on several holes you can use more than one type of shot for a good result. For example on hole 1 you can go for a hyzar shot or a fairly straight shot depending on which side of the trees you decide to go.
-This course has really good sized teepads especially for being built in '89, most courses around that time have those really tiny tee's.
-Reedy Creek uses water effectively coming into play on several holes where an early release or a long throw might get you in trouble.
-Several holes have not 1 but 2 good possible tees to throw from.

Cons:

-I found that some of the stout tee's aren't that great and really just move the original one back 15ft and putt a tree in front of you.
-I have played this course several times in the rain during tournament and I can tell you it is not a fun course to play when wet, it gets pretty muddy.

Other Thoughts:

Whenever I make the hour trip down to Charlotte we will normally start out with Reedy Creek because it is such a good little warm up course. I have played several times during tournaments and casual rounds and always have a good time playing the course. It might not stack up to some of the other Charlotte courses but I would still recommend anyone in the area to give it at least a round or two.

Reedy IS Charlotte disc golf 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 13, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Reedy has variety and elevation, which are it's two strongest assets:

- Although some holes are similar, each has a distinct flavor. Between the blind shots (6, 7, 11, 13, 14, 18), holes with water in play (numerous), drastic elevation changes (6, 14), and tight fairways (3, 8), there are many holes that stand out about this course.

- It's the elevation that really sets it apart from other Charlotte courses. Nothing else in the area is quite like Reedy when it comes to this. It almost has a mountain feel at times because the woods really take away the urban flavor and the elevation comes into play so often.

- Most of the course is shaded, so it's a great place to play in the hot summer.

- Reedy has many classic ameneties like benches and trash cans at the holes, etc.

- As others have mentioned, there are two locations for the baskets that get changed throughout the year. When the baskets are in the short locations, it really gives you birdie opportunities galore. When they are in the long, the course can be a bit more demanding. In addition to those, there are also the stout tees which can really challenge you.

Cons:

- It's by far the most crowded course in Charlotte. Because it's close to UNCC, it picks up a lot of college kids as well as other casual players. You are more likely to find a group of 5-6 playing here than anywhere else, and that can be frustrating.

- The course gets muddy after rains, and it stays muddy for a good long while. I'd venture to say that there are parts of the course that are muddy year round because of the shade.

- At times, the course can be littered with beer cans and bottles. That's in direct correlation with the college crowd that often plays the course. To the park's credit, that issue has gotten better over the years, so somebody is doing a better job of cleaning up the course.

- Baskets are not yellow DiscCatchers, so they are hard to pick out at times. Most holes have a yellow "sign" on top to help locate them, but the latter holes don't even have that.

Other Thoughts:

- Reedy IS Charlotte disc golf. It's the course that most outsiders relate to Charlotte, and it is by far the most played course in the area. When folks ask about me about Charlotte disc golf, they almost always mention Reedy in there somewhere.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 27, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Really fun course to play. So many birdie holes. Dual tee pads and two layouts. Each hole is designed with the disc golfer in mind, no unusual trees in the way. Nice elevation changes. Short layout provides birdie chance on every hole, long layout plays just a few shots harder from the short tee pads. Stout tee pads provide extra challenge not only in length but design.

Cons:

Crowded but only because it is not as difficult as the surrounding courses. By far the funnest course to play in Charlotte.

B+ = You Be Feelin' Positive After Playing This 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 27, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

What I personally like and how this course stacks up:
1) Holes with good risk/reward -- C (Original layout will rarely punish you more for a bad shot than for a so-so shot. Most of Stout's holes will lay a spanking you for bad shots, but too often in a way that is not really fair.)
2) Holes that have rewarding birdie opportunities -- A- (Most holes on both layouts' long basket positions will give me a natural high when I birdie. There are 4-5 holes on Original where it feels bad not to get birdies. For reference, I throw accurately to 300'.)
3) More wooded than open - lots of variety of shots required caused by hole shape and topography -- B+ average (Original has nice variety, but nothing severe. Stout has lots of wierd and fluky angles and lines to navigate).
4) Natural beauty (Appalachian beauty preferred) and seclusion -- B+ (Very nice seclusion, but only average beauty for the woods you are in.)
5) Bonus amount for multi-shot holes with defined landing zones, good risk/reward and multiple options to play them -- C- (11 Stout is excellent! It has a very small and hard to reach landing zone. If you try to reach the pin from anwhere but the LZ be prepared to pay for your sin with at least 2 added strokes. 15 is just OK - takes a longer first shot than the players who the course is designed for will typically have.....and even then there often is no real line to the basket.)

Other Thoughts:

It's all about feeding the addiction, so I ranked this course subjectively based on my own "personal addiction factor". The grades above tell how well the course will draw me back to itself again and again and again. Since I have played a decent number of courses (115 18-hole, 50 9-hole as of early 2009), my hope is that players/explorers who have similar addiction tastes will find my ratings list helpful as they choose courses to play and explore.

I fully expect others with different tastes/philosophies to disagree with me....that's the fun of things here. See my profile for my rating philosophy.

Oh....and a PS: I love the online "Be the Disc!" narrated fly-by videos! :)

Can get muddy when it's wet. Very busy course.

Other Thoughts:

Good use of alternate tees and baskets. This course is a challenge for your mid-range game.

Reedy Creek 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 26, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Great Amenities including clean restrooms, trashcans and benches.
-Very well maintained fairways that offer a great variety of shots.
-Multiple teepads let you make the course as difficult as you want it to be. Also, changes the course enough to give it a whole new experience.
-Easy to navigate.

Cons:

Course can get busy on weekends and can become quite muddy/slippery after a rain.

Other Thoughts:

Best Woods course in Charlotte, not as long or as difficult as some of its neighboring courses but still very much worth the play. Highly recommended.

Good Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 5, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Reedy has good tee signs. Trash cans and benches on most holes.
-There are concrete tee pads, and several holes have multiple tee pads.
-There are also different pin placements on many holes. The local club usually alternates and puts the pins in the long postion for spring summer, short for fall and winter.
-This is a great course to hone your accuracy without having to bomb your disc.
-The course flows very well, with signs pointing to the next hole when it's not obvious.
-There is a putting basket to practice on.
-This is a great summer course. It is very heavily wooded offering you shade for most of your round.

Cons:

-This course can get real slippery after it rains, it also has alot of roots above ground. It's a good idea to watch your footing.
-Can get really crowded. If playing on the weekends or later in the day on weekdays you can expect delays. If playing by yourself you will have to play through many groups. But I've never had anyone not let me play through.
-The back nine has a walking trail, though it's only been an issue a few times, I have encountered walkers taking a wrong turn and ending up in the fairway.

Other Thoughts:

Reedy is a fun course to play. It has a varitey of left, right and straight. The design does a great job with the elevation available. When the baskets are in the short postion I usually take more mid-range than drivers. This a great course for recreational/casual players.

Charlotte's Old School Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 4, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- The classic Charlotte course. It's the oldest existing course in the area. It's probably Charlotte's most played course. Seems anyone in the area who has ever played disc golf, has played Reedy.
- Variety of holes - doglegs, holes with elevation changes, short, long, etc.
- Plenty of risk/reward chances on this course. Lots of shorter holes, under 250 feet, present plenty of chances for possible birdies. Because it's a wooded course, you still have to have accuracy to score well. If not, you'll end up in the woods, and have to scramble to save par.
- Easy to navigate - course is well laid out; good tee signs, dual tee pads (original and stout), dual hole placements.
- Short walk from parking lot to first hole, and practice tee. Both #9 & #18 lead back to parking lot. You can easily start at #10 if front 9 is too crowded.

Cons:

Not a difficult course. Despite being mostly in the woods, course is pretty wide open. If you do get off the fairway, trees can be pretty heavy and penalize you.
- Can be extremely crowded. Close to UNCC, so lots of college students, especially in spring & fall. Also have lots of casual players. On weekends, not uncommon for slow play to due to heavy use. Some of the college players, even in large groups, tend to not pay attention to anyone else, so you may get stuck behind a slow group that's in no rush to let you play through.
- Baskets are metal (silver) colored, instead of more common yellow DISCatcher baskets. On some holes, baskets are difficult to spot because they blend in with surroundings.
- This course has been effected by erosion, and general wear & tear, more than almost any course I've played. A number of fairways, and hills, have been completely worn down to just dirt. You really notice it when discs skim along the ground further than normal, and/or you'll get more shots that roll down hills (and further) because there's nothing to stop it.

Other Thoughts:

Good, solid course. Nothing overly good or bad about stands out about the course.
- Great course for beginners and all casual players. All skill levels will enjoy the course.
- Course isn't usually crowded during the week, so a good place to get a round in after work. As mentioned above, much busier on the weekend.
- Great park - plenty of restrooms, water fountains, etc. Park has plenty of other ammenities including numerous baseball and soccer fields, nature reserve, hiking trail, lake for fishing and dog park.
