Charlotte Classic 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 8, 2022 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Variety of shots required, good elevation changes, incredible greens, mix of open and wooded holes, dedicated dg course, accuracy and shot shaping rewarded, great improvements to course infrastructure recently (bridges, stairs, cat walks), cool rock formations. Every single hole is different.

Cons:

Some of the holes are poorly drained, the course needs time to dry after rainfall. Sometimes the volunteer course keepers get behind on course management, and since it's such a BIG course it demands a lot of work. Seems like since since the "Covid surge" of new players this course is getting enough traffic to keep it pretty clean. There's been a lot of work done out here this spring and over the last couple years. Signage may be a little confusing, with so many tournaments and layout tweaks it helps to have some local knowledge about this course (this is the only thing keeping me from a higher rating).

Other Thoughts:

Once you know the Gold/Grey layouts well, the "Pro" layout is easy-peasy to follow. On hot days I'll skip the long holes that stray into the Renske course. As a matter of fact, once you walk the course a few times, the possibilities for unique combinations are many. If you can't throw a variety of shots with decent accuracy this course can and will eat you alive.

This is a phenomenal course really, and a little spit shining could earn this course a 4.5 or 5. Truly a jewel in the Queen City's crown

Same as Gold just extra friggin hard 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 9, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very similar to the Gold course... just added difficulty. It's incredibly hard, but really a great way to test your ability.

Cons:

Same as the gold course, not much negative to say, but be prepared to count a pretty high score.

PPC - A solid DG challenge 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 16, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Concrete tee pads, great signs and excellent baskets on every hole. Benches at every tee also.
A few open holes, but most are wooded, either the entire length or the finish to the basket. Great use of the elevation in this park, up, down, side hill and even a couple of flat holes! Straight, left and right holes, I felt there were a few more left to right holes.
Some really cool pin positions, #5 downhill to a green that dropped off behind the basket, #10 and #14 with the baskets set in large rocks.
Has some really cool holes too, #9- Par 4, tee shot through the woods to a clearing then a 100 degree turn to the right and uphill to the basket in the open. #10, downhill then turns left into the woods, up in the rocks. #14, blind tee shot, left or right alleys, into the woods to a basket up in the rocks.
Plenty of parking at the tennis center, which also provides restrooms, water and drinks (oh and showers, if you need them).

Cons:

#18 - No tee pad, no signage, only a dirt patch that is to be interpreted as the tee, to a very short finishing hole. A lot of the shule needs to be cleaned up on #1, basket is away from the tennis courts, but needs some clearing.

Other Thoughts:

The intermediate level course of the 3 now here at Renny. This will give most players a challenge in shot making, uphill workout and avoiding the ravine of no return, on #3, #7 and #18.
I had no problem (except #18) navigating this course. Several of the baskets are shared with the Gold course, and some holes have 2 baskets. They did a nice job of dual labeling the shared baskets, yellow band with hole # for the Gold holes and white (or silver) bands with hole # for this course. The next tee signs (and these are needed several places) follow that same color scheme.
#11 also uses rocks in the layout, blind tee shot over a hill to a basket behind these rocks. They are not really an obstacle but make a cool hole.
#12 is a challenge, long, tight, uphill to a protected basket.
Then your payback is #13 downhill in the open, around the power tower to a basket in the woods.
Overall, a great job of using this awesome terrain, mixing the holes in with the Gold course. All of these holes were manageable for me, maybe next time I'll just play these and not include RenSke in a figure eight.
I don't mind raising the rating on this course at all, after all the work that has been done on it, it deserves a higher rating.

No respect I tell ya, no respect 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 22, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

After playing this course twice in the last week, I'm honestly stunned at the low rating for this course. I can see that prior confusion over Black/Grey/Gold/etc. may have been an issue in the past, but currently -- Renny PPC is for sure in my eyes a solid 4 disc course.

This is the mid-level course on this property, with the nearby Renske filling the short track beginner slot and Gold filling the World Champion layout slot. While it may seem on the short side at around 5200-5300 feet for a mid-level course, the often dramatic elevation change (for Charlotte) more than makes up for the challenge. It is a much more strenuous trek than RenSke, which is a walk in the park by comparison.

As someone who played many years ago and is now back as a beginner/intermediate player, this course offers everything I want: uphill holes, downhill holes, open holes, tree'd up holes, split fairways, doglegs left and right, awesome green complexes - the whole gamut is here to test a player's skill. (I currently have no interest in tackling 1,000 foot holes - that's what the Gold course is for).

The love and care put into this course (and Gold, obviously) over the years shows itself in many ways and is greatly appreciated. There are steps, bridges, bulkheads, signs for every hole, benches on every tee - even a lookout stand on No. 11. Wayyy more than is normally seen at a disc golf course.

The basket placement is at times phenomenal. Baskets -- all Discatchers by the way -- are mounted on huge rock formations (10 & 14), nestled behind rock formations (11), precariously perched on dropoffs (3, 6, 7 & 8), or tucked neatly away (4, 12 & 13). In all these cases, you still have real work to do to make par, even after a good drive.

Signage on virtually every hole was well marked and easy to navigate, even through the overlaid Gold course. Once I found the first tee (on the sidewalk up past the tennis "stadium"), everything flowed well from there. (Two small issues, below).

Cons:

While navigation is clearly much improved and for the most part crystal clear, there were a couple of confusing spots.

On No. 9, the basket wasn't where I was expecting it to be. It was a good 150 feet uphill and to the right of where it seemed a basket was at one time. Which is fine, although I felt 9 should be a par 4 with the extended length.

Also, 18 tee wasn't readily apparent to me. I walked up and played from where the two white stakes were in the ground with a faded "18 200ft" on the left one. This would differ from the 300 ft length listed under Hole Info. I may have just overlooked the tee pad though - I hope so, since a 200 ft ace run in this location with the massive ravine really not in play is a mildly disappointing way to end such a nice track.

Standing water on left side of 14 fairway and on 15 are likely due to the near record amount of rain Charlotte has had this November.

Other Thoughts:

To me, this is a fantastic course and a full test of your throwing arsenal. My favorite holes are:
- No. 10 with the long downhill hyzer bomb to the basket on rock mountain
- No. 13 with the long downhill anhyzer to the tucked basket

Others of note:
No. 4 is a long S turn that plays around a fence to a tucked basket. Very tough.
No. 7 brutalized me both times, with the nasty dropoff all down the right side.
No. 9 as mentioned above, is wicked - downhill through the trees, then uphill hard right and long.

I hope more players will play "The Whites" at Renny and give the PPC the solid rating it deserves.
