A Monster of a Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 18, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-excellent concrete tee pads
-signs on each hole
-nice high benches
-plenty of garbage cans
-some good elevation change
-well-manicured course, growth and grass are generally very well maintained
-despite some challenging shots, usually discs are pretty easy to find

Cons:

-currently, several baskets are missing (6, 14, 15, for the most part we played to another basket)
-some signs have been vandalised
-a lot of more open holes can get repetitive
-some nasty brambles if you have to push in to the woods to find a disc

Other Thoughts:

This is an impressive (and long) course. I always remember it longer than the numbers would show. I think the fact that you play 24 holes makes it seem longer. It's definitely a course to play when you're in the area. There are multiple holes that play over the creek hazard as well as the interesting "donut" OB hole. Just make sure you're up for around 1.5 miles of walking when you go out to play this course. Sometimes I think 24 holes can be too much. I love playing disc golf, but a lot of times more than 18 holes is just a result of trying to cram in a few more poorly thought out holes. This course, in my opinion, does not suffer from that, because the last few holes are actually some of my favorites.

Variety & a good challenge 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 14, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

The Riney B disc golf course has variety, elevation, distance, tree lane challenges, and a unique hole with a donut-shaped OB around a hilltop basket. There are 24 baskets (-ish: you now often play from the 6th tee to basket #7, and the #14 & #15 baskets were not in place as of the date of this review) ranging over some nice park land posing a decent challenge for even the intermediate to advanced disc golfer. The shortest hole is in the 175' range, but there is also one over 500'. A very slow, water-filled creek influences your shot selection on about a third of the holes. Maintenance of the course appears to be good and consistent, and there has been some obvious effort put in this year to improve and keep trimmed for a couple of the nicer tournaments they run here annually.

There is an excellent map, and some quality signage (Hiss! Boo! ...to the idiot vandals and visigoths who've messed with them!) at each tee, along with trash barrels and benches on almost every hole. The park has no other obvious activities which would interfere with the disc golf. Even the paths seem to go around only the perimeter, except for a spot or two where they might come into play, but only if both parties are being willfully oblivious of the other. The park center is a really nice looking water park, and there is a full scale, classic railroad engine, etc., displayed with signs to stay off (though with steps inviting you to step on up for a look-see!?).

Opening with a diagonal bomb drive off the ridge down to the edge of the woods, this course quickly immerses the player in its trademark hedge-rowed fairways, challenging lines, and baskets teasingly tucked into the woods. There are several holes which demand precision through wooded lanes as tight as 12-15' wide, but all are navigable for the accomplished disc golfer.

But you soon emerge onto a wide open, rolling-hilled bomb, followed by the donut mentioned above. You work around the lower, back end of the course to a tricky S-bending 17th (send a spotter ahead!), and up hill on 18, to one of my favorites: the 19th, where you hyzer (rhbh) across the open, into the woods, and navigate your second shot (hopefully) though a few strategically maintained trees to a pin position at the end of the lane.

Another interesting hole is the 'fish'-shaped 22nd, which has crossing tees and fairways, 290' out around the trees and bushes to a blind pin position. After getting your drive (or more commonly, your upshot) to stay atop the ridge and hole out on 23, you finish coming diagonally back up to the parking lot on #24, for a fairly well rounded, well...er...round. You'll use most of the shots in your bag to complete Riney B.

Cons:

A couple of the pin positions seem to be intentionally grueling, where the 'green' has been left with dozens of small guardian trees, making even 'gimme' putts inside of 20' a head-scratcher.

There is obviously going to be an issue with drainage in some of the low-lying areas of this course, which might make you think twice about which holes to play if it has been rainy recently. I've been lucky enough to have played here twice when it was fairly dry, but you can tell by the ruts the maintenance gear has left, that you can spend some time in marshy land, too.

Other Thoughts:

Not something the course can control, but: The first time I played here, a train grinded by on the tracks that run along the back of the course, and might have been the loudest, most sustained noise I've heard all year out on a course (folks from the Super Summer Slammer remember that?). I don't think they're all that way, but wow!

Rough and Tough 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 13, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Nice variety of holes
Concrete tee pads
Discatcher baskets
Well taken care of
Many different shots
Challenging for all skill levels
Pin placements switched often
Of course, 24 holes
Great elevation changes

Cons:

Very thick rough
Poison ivy in certain spots
Some unreasonable mandos
Will flood if it rains

Other Thoughts:

As many have stated this course sits in a very suitable spot. It's in the perfect area. It gives you just about everything, when it comes to shot selection. The only big problem is the tendency of it to flood. If it rains, even the slightest it will dolls. When you go just make sure you go on the right day. Another big problem is the bugs. They are everywhere. You will need some sort of repellent. I know it also gets stated a lot, but I have to mention it. The rough here is so THICK. At some parts if your disc goes in, you can just kiss it goodbye. My favorite hole here is the donut hole. It is just really cool how the did that. Although it was not very friendly to me I still enjoyed it. I live up in northern Kentucky, and I still love to come down to Lexington and get some good golf in. They have great courses here. But, I have to say Riney is my favorite. So like they always say, good luck and good shooting.

Riney B 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 25, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Very well put together with the land that is there. A lot of good elevation changes. Good variety of distance, open vs. wooded holes on the course. Good tees good signs. tees were all in good condition. The course challenges you to use multiple types of shots. The water hazards are there small streams but nothing that you will really loose a disc on, which is an awesome pro if you ask me. This is a great course to play and I do look forward to keep playing because of the challenge it has in the variety of shots needed, the accuracy needed, and the distances required.

Cons:

No very aesthetically pleasing, just kind of boring but maybe just because the time of year I played. Just kind of building in and out of the woods where it looks like they just cleared a path.

Other Thoughts:

24 holes makes for a good day, although its not easy to play part of the course such as 9 or 18 and end by the parking lot.

Nice n rough 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 15, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course plays through a long strip of park with wooded areas on both sides filled with thick brushy rough waiting to snare errant drives. There is a good mix of holes that play through the open areas with some minor elevation changes and tight fairways through the woods with a nice variety of hole shapes. There is some good length on a few of the open holes, and creative use of the elevation available.

The concrete tees were in good shape, and had enough texture to provide good footing. There were next tee signs where necessary, and though many were misnumbered, they were adequate to make it fairly easy to follow the course. The discatchers were in decent shape and caught well.

Cons:

There is some flooding on the lower parts of the course near the creek, even with no recent rain a couple fairways had a couple inches of standing water. The signage needs an upgrade here, with misnumbered signage where it isn't missing altogether. The lack of signage makes for extra walking with lots of blind holes. There are a few of the open holes that feel like filler just to get to 24 holes.

Other Thoughts:

Riney B is a fun challenge with a nice mix of hole types. Beginners might find the wooded holes a little punishing and tight, while more experienced players will find some nice challenges throughout the course. If you're in the area, this one's worth a stop despite the lack of real signage and the flooding issues.

When Good Beavers Go Bad! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 4, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

High-quality signs at tees. Lots of imagination demonstrated throughout the twenty-four holes.

Cons:

Susceptible to dampness, and apparently becoming worse. Nature's engineers are having a real go at making the middle of this course a suitable habitat for themselves - and less so for disc golf! When I played the course in early April, 2010, the small footbridge at #7 was partially submerged, water was encroaching the entire left-side of #8, and the tee for #9 had water heading its way, too. Water and very damp ground was also a problem at baskets #10, 13, and 14, and tee #15.

Other Thoughts:

This course provides excellent variation in tightness, from the long, wide-open holes that begin, end, and are scattered about the course to the short-n-tight wooded holes found in spurts throughout. Most holes are on the flat side, but there were a few opportunities to watch your discs glide from a elevated position, or go up-n-over a small ridge. Even blend of straight/left/no-turning shots needed off the tee.

Holes I found particularly interesting were: #4 a 200', straight, tightening wooded shot, that then required a 90-degree right turn and about 75 more feet; #11, about 200' up a hill and its artificial out-of-bounds "moat"; #15, with its very generous fairway to start which squeezed into a funnel a few hundred feet away, where it then opened widely; #16-#17, requiring single/multi-turning shots around a screen of trees - or daring you to try the shortcut up-n-over them; #22, offering you a choice of two tees, depending upon if you prefer to throw a U-shaped right- or left-turning shot

As you enter the park, tee #1 is next to the near left corner of the parking lot, and basket #24 is close to the far left corner. Food and petrol options nearby.

Hopefully the disc golf course will find a way to coexist with the local critters - the work the beavers were doing on a 2' diameter tree near the bridge at #7 was most impressive! Excellent all-around variety, making the most of the available landscape.

A hole for everyone 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 29, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Tee signs are very accurate and mark other baskets that are viewable from tee.
-Teepads and baskets are new and in great shape.
-Navigation is very easy to follow without a map.
-The layout is just perfect there is plenty of fun for all types of golfer, start out open hit some moderate woods, then thick woods then open. Great mix of short and long with a couple ace runs.
-Extra six holes make this course even longer with more fun.
-Scenery the course is very well kept and takes you along and over a large creek on many holes.
-Elevation this is a mainly flat course but the design takes advantage of what elevation is there to make some fun approaches on a few baskets.
-Course is very playable for newbies who dont mind high scores and has some challenges for higher caliber players.
-Multiple teepads and basket placements on most every hole.

Cons:

-The rough is extremely rough, would be awesome if some of the holes had the area around the creek completely cleared out other than large trees.
-Seemed to have no trash cans on the course.
-A few holes had me scrathing my head, not a huge con but none the less one or two holes seemed like fillers.
-Mandos I am not a fan of mandos if you see a line i say take it.

Other Thoughts:

The course was dry when i was there could see how in the spring it could get wet, but dont they all. The innova baskets are not friendly to me, but i dont consider that a con just i need to learn where to hit them. Rinney is first impression in my top three. Behind Idle wild not sure if it better than banklick or not, would have to play it a few more times, which i will everytime i head down to the red river gorge.

Ice Bowling... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 17, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is a lot of fun. There were very challenging wooded holes were you better have a nice hyzer, and a long anhyzer in your arsenal. The wooded holes have narrow well maintained fairways. If you can toss a nice controlled midrange drive you will be set for a par. If you go for it you can get the bird or double boge. The open field shot are very nicely laid out with good use of elevation changes.
There are some water issues, as said before. Personally I like it, because it is going to change all the time because of the presence of Beavers. You can def see where they have been working on taking down some small trees. This means they will continue to build dams and make their territory bigger for years to come. Stopping a beaver from building is not easy at all. So I would not count on the holes close to the lake getting any better. Luckily the day I was there we did not play several of the low holes and the others with water were thick with ice. The island hole was nice, but not to me b/c of the fat cross wind. Several holes had marked OB and drop points. There was another sweet hole on the back side where the pin is on a levee, over shoot and bubye 30'.

Cons:

Water, but anytime you get to see wildlife in action I can not call it a total negative. Beavers a engineers with teeth. Could really use some trash cans. I started to pick trash up but realized quickly I would be toting a hefty bag in a few holes. It is winter, the under brush was pretty vicious, I can only imagine in the Sring and summer, lots of thorns. Just be warned you may bleed a little to get that disc back.

Other Thoughts:

Get challenging course. Planning for the expansion fo the beaver lodge and subsequent lake will be a challenge for this course moving forward. Beavers do not go away, they multiply. Go beavers!

2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 17, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Riney B is a fun, challenging and long course with a nice mix of open and wooded holes.

The open holes (roughly 2/3 of the course) are long and range from mostly open to technical curving fairways surrounded by dense rough or a stream. the open holes are generally very long with few of them less than 300 feet.

The wooded holes are very technical with lots of trees, and often times, curves in the fairways. A good skilled shot (or a very lucky one) can birdie or par many of these holes and a poor shot can easily end up as a 5.

The tee pads are in excellent condition and are nice and long. The layout is easy to follow and there are signs pointing you towards the next hole. Some of the holes have multiple pin positions which really change how the hole is played.

**Update 4/16/09** Tee signs have been installed. They are large, very detailed, and look fantastic.

Cons:

Holes 13-15 were extremely wet and nearly unplayable on Jan 12 and Mar 30 when I was there. A dam is nearby and is elevated slightly higher than these holes causing them to be soaking wet. There were some standing puddles elsewhere on the course, but nothing that caused any real problems.

Other Thoughts:

I wouldn't recommend a course of this length and difficulty to newer plays, but advanced players should enjoy the challenge.

Keep up the great work!

Maintenance Nightmare... 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 13, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Variety - This course has it and in bunches.

#4 (Hard right dogleg) - Is a great hole, Gives you the option to go over the top but punishes you badly for the misses!
#9 - This slight uphill hole has improved more over the past year than any hole on the course. The fairway is better defined but is still very unforgiving on bad shots.
#15 is a beautiful DG hole - Will be even better once a few of the pot holes in the fairway fill in (these can be rough on ankles & legs). Long shot to a narrow opening with the basket sitting out in the open. (500'+ hole)
#14 is another nice shot - Right to left with a peninsula placement (water on three sides) - Easy to deuce but easier to go OB. Another of my favorites.

This course manages to cater to everyone a little without truly favoring anyone. Forehand, backhand, overhand - You better hope you have at least a little of each. Even if not needed off the pad you will need it WHEN (not IF) you find the rough. And the rough is real rough in places. Keep you tee shots in play and be very selective on you upshots.
Nice mix of open drivers holes and tight lines through the woods. This place will also teach you how to play in the wind.

This course defines Risk/Reward - The openings are there if you have the courage and the shot to go at it.

Cons:

A few things that are keeping this course from a higher rating:
1 - Course can be very soggy on multiple holes (1,13,14 & 15 are the worst).
2 - Some of the Brush, Honeysuckle, Poison Ivy, Briars, etc.... really needs to go. Too many players get frustrated with the number of lost discs.
3 - Course seems to have been made big and long (24 holes) without regards for the maintenance issues this would cause. Still think this would be better as a great 18 hole course instead of the 24.

Other Thoughts:

Much has been done to fine-tune a few of the more "questionable" holes since the course was opened. Get out the calculator for when you miss your line on a drive. Playing alone will lead to lost discs, spotters on some holes are needed..

Scouts and Local volunteers did some initial cleanup in the area of the first two holes - A little more work like this will really cause a big improvement.

Maintenance has been improving and it looks like it is being mowed(weather permitting) regularly.

Muddy and watered down 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Mar 25, 2008 Played the course:once

Pros:

Mix of long and short holes (both open and a few in the woods), Nice changes in elevation, lots of wind, course tests every shot in your bag and your accuracy

Cons:

Some fairways still flood but drainage issues have much improved over last year, some of the holes are still kind of hit or miss but they are getting better

Other Thoughts:

Course has been completed and shows more and more promise as the season go along. Some new placements have been added along with concrete tee which make this course much much easier to play. On a side note there should be more OB's on some of the holes along with Mando's (there are a few places where people can accidently throw into your fairway)
