Pros:
It would have saved me a lot searching after I had finished playing # 9. I walked north, I walked south, I ran into the Feather River. Finally, I gave up and went and had breakfast. While at breakfast, I pulled up the course map on my I-pad and said , "Hello, back nine." And then I drove back and finished my round.
Riverbend Park North is one of two courses here at the park. At the starting area is a practice basket and two heavy duty concrete picnic tables but no course sign. The parks department doesn't seem to be a fan of signage. Personally, I kinda miss em. The course plays 9 holes heading south until you reach the park's center. Then I painfully found out, the back nine starts way back yonder.
The course has nice long 16' concrete tee pads with the hole #, par, distances and route on a metal plate that is imbedded into the concrete. It is vandal proof. The baskets are a very pretty blue DGA Mach 2's. They have white numbers which I found especially readable from distances. Most holes on the front nine were in 200-300' range.
The back nine started strong with # 10, my favorite hole on the course. It'# a pretty 270' throw down a valley and through a narrow gap between trees with the basket standing farther behind. # 14 provides the opportunity for you to send your disc scuba diving in the Feather River. The basket is set close enough to the river bank that some players will cut it a little too close.
I was impressed with # 18. Not because it is such a dynamic hole or anything. As I walked up to the tee box, I thought to myself, this hole is going to play right around the corner right into the walking path. Instead, the course designer wisely chose to make a shorter hole playing up and to the left before the corner thereby greatly reducing any safety concerns. I remain impressed.
Cons:
I'm sorry but I just don't find river bottom land all that attractive.
My feet didn't enjoy walking on all those river bottom rocks.
Unusual design with back nine where it is. It would have made more sense to make the back nine 1 to 9 and then continue on from there by making the current # 1 become the start of the back nine # at # 10.
It makes it a little difficult to spot the tee pads without a sign sticking up.
Creepy homeless dudes lurking around.
There wasn't anything too creative here. Kind of a ho-hum round but but my Egg and Sausage McMuffin at the nearby McDonalds was delicious!
Other Thoughts:
The North Course here at Riverbend Park is OK but I have to give the edge to the South Course by a small margin. Together, they make for 36 holes of pretty decent golfing. I understand the locals play what I think they said is twenty-nine (If I heard them correctly) where they veer from North Course in the middle and then play the 18 holes of the South Course. Or something clever like that.
