Tough Wooded Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 8, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- Brush is not crazy thick
- Practice basket
- Benches at many holes
- Alternate concrete Tee pads on almost all holes
- Lots of elevation
- Course stays relatively cool on hotter days
- A lot of other nice amenities in the park for you to enjoy that also don't interfere with the course
- Wooded shots are fair even if challenging
- brooms by tee pads
- friendly people

Cons:

- Not a great course for beginners
- I found a few spots tricky to navigate or find the alternate pads
- Not a lot of variation in hole length
- I found myself using the same few discs on this course

Other Thoughts:

I enjoyed the few rounds I played here. It is VERY hilly and the elevation is used well in the hole design. For the most part a very positive experience. I was initially confused about where to park and where the course started but once I got on the course it was straight forward.

This course is pretty much entirely wooded. There are "open" holes that are lined by trees and brush on each side but are relatively wide (30-40 ft) and clear of trees. The rest of the holes have much tighter wooded fairways (10-20 ft) that also have trees in the middle of them forcing you to throw well controlled shots.

One of the top courses I've played 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 19, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Course is well maintained with lots of activities in the park. I like that there is trash cans at every tee and a broom to brush off the concrete pads. Plus, it's nice to have the benches to sit down for a few. I like the hole variety. Not a humdrum course for sure. Easy to navigate. signs everywhere letting you know what hole you were playing and the direction to the next hole. Great baskets. This course is laid out very well.

Cons:

just nit picking but maybe more information on the hole #s.

Awesome course! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 8, 2016 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Dual pads on most holes.
-BIG variety of shots. Forehands, hyzers, dead straight, flex, rollers, overhands. Definitely will appeal to all play styles and test your shot selection.
-Lots of elevation to make for some really interesting holes. A couple are just either straight up or straight down, but there are a lot of slanted fairways to really make you think about shot selection.
-Easy to navigate, no problems getting around the course
-brooms available to sweep off the tee pads on every hole. It wasn't a huge problem today, but in the summer when it gets dusty, that is a huge plus
-very well kept. The tees were in good shape, not a lot of garbage around, nicely mowed grass. Rolling Hills is an awesome park to begin with.

Cons:

-maybe just a con for me, but there aren't any bomb holes. On longs, there are longer shots, but not any more open "let-it-rip" kind of shots
-All of the holes are par 3 drive and putt kind of shots. I would love to see more placement shots, but I think this comes with a longer course

Other Thoughts:

The park itself is really great, with multiple running paths, a water park, and other really great activities. I live in about a 20-30min ring of many amazing courses, and this is one of my favorites. If you're in the area, you definitely have to play this course!

This place is a freakin' blast!! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 31, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Aesthetic-- course plays through a portion of a large "metro-type" park. Many other amenities dot the landscape. a bike riding/access trail winds through the course so be on the look out. you do not throw over the trail (IIRC) but it's close to in play.

Teepads-- Excellent. large, level and in phenomenal repair. As has been said in other review, there are huge drop offs after the teepad that could really ruin your follow through.

Routing/nav-- super easy. we never ever felt like we could possibly get lost. plenty of next tee signs made it super easy.

Baskets-- Discraft in excellent repair with orange reflective tape on the necks.

Multiple teepads-- huge plus here. there are so many unique looks here that the multiple teepads help to accentuate.

elevation!!!!-- huge use of elevation here. huge plus in every single manner. It is rediculously refreshing to have this much elevation change on a course in this area.

Course amenities-- plenty of places to sit and rest between holes. it's a bit funny, you can tell which tee people throw from as they are the ones with the seats near them :)

Cons:

Teesigns-- accurate length description and an arrow pointing you where the fairway is but a map of the hole would be most excellent. a lot of scouting is needed on this course to find the pins.

Variety/Challenge-- it seems that a lot of the SE Michigan courses are left hand/forehand friendly with right fades... this is no exception. the holes (even the longs) are not that challenging. I think I ended +1 on my first round through.

Other Thoughts:

Overall this course was a blast. Very refreshing. I totally should have played this course by now.

Cons:

Found it tough to navigate. Not from this area so I got lost.

Other Thoughts:

Glad of all the courses I had to choose from that you folks have in east Michigan that I chose Rolling Hills. Ha only a short time available to play and I chose this one based on the rating it received and the positive comments. Did not disappoint. I did not mind the gate fee - it was worth it.

Wooded course, but not too tight 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 8, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

- nice concrete tee pads
- well maintained park grounds
- very little trash, lots of cans to put it in
- brooms by the tee pads
- a lot of fun technical holes up and down hills, over rises, around slight bends
- Good mix of short and long wooded holes, but fairways are open enough to "miss" most of the trees
- bathrooms near the start of the course, also picnic grounds
- excellent signs leading the way through the course, there's no possibility of getting lost
- virtually no chance of losing a disc

Cons:

- COST - $9 per day per car for a non resident. UGH
- lack of wide open holes (one or two open/long holes would really mix it up, and the sledding hill area provides that space!)
- need more dirt in front of tee pads...there is a good foot drop off a few of them, making for a risky run up

Other Thoughts:

This course almost favors the forehand divers I think...a lot of slight turns made easy with a good forehand. I hit a lot of trees...but still got a good score (-10 on 18 my first time there). I think they kind of built in some "tree strokes" for you. :)

All in all this is a nice park, an excellent course and well worth the visit. Because there are so many good courses nearby, it would be worth taking a weekend trip to the Ann Arbor/Dexter/Brighton area and playing several courses.

There is a waterpark here, lots of picnic areas, good bathrooms and a nice bike trail. I highly recommend this course, one of my personal favorites.

Great course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 29, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Concrete tee pads
Brooms at nearly every tee pad
Posts marked with distance to basket at each tee pad
Pro and Amateur tees
Good baskets
Great elevation changes
Easy to navigate (posts pointing out the way)

Cons:

Kind of expensive for non resident compared to other parks.

First tee pad was kind of hard to find. Only found it due to a practice basket sitting out in the open.

No signs in the park directing you to the proper parking lot after the first main sign.

Other Thoughts:

Loved the course, reminded me slightly of Hudson Mills Original course just slightly smaller. It's closer to my house than Hudson so that's a + for me.

Couple this course with Lakeshore and it makes a great Sunday afternoon.

they aren't kidding 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 5, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

**The course design uses the natural elevation perfectly. For SE MI, the grades can be pretty 'extreme'.. it may be a bit strenuous for those who have some difficulty getting around in the woods, but to me it was a pleasure to walk and even more so to throw. I believe it was either holes #11-12 or #12-13 where you play up a roughly 50' hill on the first, then right back down the hill on the next hole, very satisfying.

**Upon walking up, a good number of the holes treat the player to that "wow" moment, which is not very common in even the best courses around here.

**Incredibly clean course. Lidded trash cans (most likely to keep animals/rain out) on what seemed like 99% of holes on both tees, Brooms on most tee pads are a nice touch.

**Good mix of distance/precision. Not many tunnel shots, but densely wooded enough to get you thinking one shot ahead of yourself and picking the best lines possible.

**Tall signage indicating next hole location, really hard to stray off track here.

Cons:

**For non-county residents, the $9 park admission is too much. I would like to think they set the price so high because Rolling Hills Waterpark is what really brings the non-county folk in, but would prefer to see that cost reflected in the (completely separate from park admission) Waterpark admission fee. They counter the cost of admission by making DG free to play, but unless you have a couple buddies with you, you pay a dollar / 2 holes.

**Course map on the scorecard was initially a bit difficult to navigate, but became virtually unnecessary once on the course, just know that the lonely practice basket on the right side of the parking lot is basically the gateway to Hole #1.

**The only thing missing design wise is a real bomber of a hole, there are opportunities to air it out from the tee pads here and there, but nothing where you have to launch two stupid long drives to make par, could be a personal taste thing, but a con to me nonetheless.

Other Thoughts:

**Only 18 holes. I know, I know, ONLY?? 18 holes is plenty, a full course indeed, especially with two tee pads on most holes.. I just feel like with the space available on the park grounds, and the fact that the course has been open for like 26 years, they might have thought about expansion at some point. Not a big deal, but I would like to see 24 holes out here at some point :D

Pros:

Well maintained,Very clean very little trash found tossed about..Good signs pointing in direction of baskets and next tees. Unique use of elevation at many tees. Very beautiful park. Easy to make a day full of activities here with the water park, geocaches, letter boxes, trails, playgrounds, etc :)

Cons:

Cost of admission for non-washtenaw county residents can be pricey regardless of if you are getting a daily or an annual. Though I think $9 is kinda steep if you go a couple of times, the $45 annual pass seems waaay too high. (just my opinion). some of the steeper elevations can be a bit tricky to manuver especially if there has been recent rain

Other Thoughts:

This is a really nice course for both beginners and old pros. Be cautious on some o f the slopes especially if its damp or muddy. Bring mosquito spray because those little buggers are blood thirsty! ;)

Well Maintained 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 7, 2011 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- The park staff keeps this course in pristine condition. The grass is cut nicely and the paths are taken care of.
- Great use of the elevation and woods. Some very unique holes both up and down some steep hills.
- Nice tee pads. And some holes have both pro and am tees.
- For the most part good signage at each tee.
- Benches at almost every tee pad and also brooms at every tee pad to clean off any debris.

Cons:

- While sometimes funny, there is too much graffiti on tee signs and benches.
- Most of the time there are signs pointing you in the right direction, but on a few holes they are missing.

***Cost of admission, but luckily this time of year no one was manning the gate!

Other Thoughts:

This course is a beautiful disc course over a nicely maintained park with lots of elevation and fun holes. It also is nicely flowing, so you can usually get a round in about an hour without too much traffic.
If you are in the Ypsilanti/Ann Arbor area this is a must stop on the tour!

-Not many drives where you can air it out

Pretty and Wooded 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 2, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

Rolling Hills is a very aptly named, beautiful and mostly wooded, 18 hole course located in Ypsilanti Michigan. The course shares the park with lots of other amenities such as a water park and playgrounds.

This course plays mostly through some secluded woods with a few holes that open up a little. Even with numerous holes that have trees scattered in the fairway, there are multiple distinct lines available.

The design of this course is very well balanced offering a wide variety of shots (FH, BH OH etc..). To shoot low rounds a golfer will need to be proficient in all types of throws. There is a very nice variety in the hole lengths (although nothing over 400') and the available elevation was used to full advantage. There are some significant uphill and downhill holes with plenty of minor elevation in between. The course has a very natural flow to it that is easy to follow.

The tees, tee signs and baskets were all in good condition. There are two tees on 11 of the holes. There are also next tee signs on wooden posts that make navigating the course pretty easy.

The course was in immaculate shape, with trashcans available. Honestly there were not even stray sticks in the fairway when I played. I was super impressed.

The rough is pretty thick but definitely manageable compared to other courses I have played in Michigan.

There is a building near the parking lot that has water and bathrooms available.

A nice practice basket on the way to Hole #1's Tee.

Cons:

This course is really missing an "air it out" hole. Usually even shorter courses have one long hole where you really need to pull a big drive to get it there.

The $9 entry fee for out of county residents is a bit much.

Of the 7 holes with only one tee, instead of combing them as red/blue together they made them white tees. The first one I came across I looked for 10 minutes for the blue tee but couldn't find it. Just adds a little confusion, nothing major.

The mosquitoes on this course were about as bad as I have ever come across (the size of small birds of prey). It has been a rainy spring so they were out in force and my Deep Woods Off did not faze them in the least. Giant, mutant, DEET resistant skeeters.......

Other Thoughts:

Really, a very fun course that is well put together and maintained. I prefer wooded courses so this was right up my alley. I will say that if I go back I will make sure I play some other nearby courses on the same day to try and get some more value out of the Washtenaw County cover charge.

I had two favorite holes. The first was #1, which is perfect introduction to the course. 313' on a gentle anny down a very picturesque tree lined fairway. The second was number 15. This hole is a dramatic decline in elevation, 289', turning a little leftwith a fallen tree about halfway down. You can get a putter there but it needs to hold the right line.

This course is a great addition to the great collection of courses in the Ann Arbor/Ypsilanti area.

Pure Michigan! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 26, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Woodsy and technical with elevation that's used very effectively. Tree lined fairways (many dotted with a few more sprinkled in for good measure) require you to find and execute a line in order to score well. Course is aptly named, with many elevation changes ranging from subtle to very dramatic. Features several picturesque holes and visually impressive drop offs that are very inviting to throw, along with some distance robbing uphill grades. Well balanced mix of lines will have you using every shot in your arsenal, and thinking about your plan of attack. Challenging enough for experienced players without being intimidating to beginners. Wonderful disc play on a well-designed course.
• Flows naturally from basket to next tee, only had trouble in one spot (went to 16 after 9, had to back track to find 10).
• Concrete pads are fine and baskets were a non-issue. Distance only tee markers are simple but in good condition:
11 blues for long
11 reds for short
7 whites on holes with a single tee pad.
• Rough isn't too bad for the most part (but can be thick in spots). Risk of disc loss is relatively low for a course of this caliber.
• Very effectively isolated from other park activities. Park was clean and well maintained and absolutely bustling with other activity when we played, but course was completely secluded... hardly saw anyone during our round.
• Tons of shade makes playing here on hot days a lot easier.
• Update: Dubs league has added brooms to sweep tees at many holes - either they didn't quite have enough for all 18 holes, or someone's already swiped a few of them, but they are present on most holes.

Cons:

$9/car for out-of-county residents! At that price, they ought to include lunch or at least someone to sweep tee pads.
• Dual pads on 11 of the 18 hole are pretty much same line give ot take 75-130 ft.
• Fine when I played, but with all the elevation and so many bare patches in the wooded sections, I can totally see how the course would be a mess after a good rain, if not downright treacherous to get good footing on.
• If well wooded, technical courses aren't your idea of good discing, stay away - frustration is simply a matter of time. Just cause your drive looks OK doesn't means you're out of the woods (literally). Most holes offer opportunities to hit trees all along the fairway.
• No real "air it out holes," virtually every tee shot requires control.

Other Thoughts:

If I had to select one course that typifies Michigan disc golf, this would be it. Great design, terrain, and setting combine to create the quintessential Michigan discing experience. Course has aged beautifully and is solid in every aspect - no glaring deficiencies.

Bring friends to help out with the entry fee and play Rolling Hills the same day as Independence Lake to stretch your park pass and you've got one helluva nice day of DG.

Tons of quality DG variety make the Ann Arbor/Ypsi area a great destination: Hudson Mills, Rolling Hills, Ponds of Lakeshore, and Red Hawk at Independence Lake each have distinct personalities, and offer unique challenges depending on your personal strengths and weaknesses. Each of them is well designed, clean, a complete joy to play, and completely different from the others. For a shorter technical challenge, try nearby Mary Beth Doyle park - not up to the standards the others set, but not a bad course unto itself.

Pros:

Nice park, good use of what elevation is available, nice wooded holes. Two sets of tees: shorts are friendly to most players, longs are challenging for good players. Excellent workout for those looking for lefty-friendly course. Great place to develop a RH sidearm.

Cons:

High fees if not county resident with annual pass. Tees need brushing occasionally.

Other Thoughts:

Get your scoring done on the 1st 6 holes, after that birdies are harder to come by.

RH sidearm is a big asset on this course, particularly on the long tees. Short tees are much more neutral. Guys with a good RH flip-up shot also do well here. Lefties will want to come back again to play the longs.

Holes 7,8, and 12 require a very precise shot through wooded terrain. Hole 17 has very tight access to pin due to large tree in fairway getting bigger & bigger.

Interesting course with plenty of wooded shots. Very easy to navigate between holes. A mix of sun/shade. Also a good mix of elevation shots. Dual tees that are actually more challenging for the Pro Tees (as opposed to just being 10 feet behind the am tee).

A very well maintained fairway and probably the cleanest course I've seen.
