2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 15, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

1.) Course is located in the middle of a county park in the metro Detroit area. One can play a round or two of disc golf, go mountain biking, go to the park's water park, etc. I particularly like this, because I can do more than one of my favorite outdoor activities in one setting.

2.) An extremely well-maintained course! I have only been playing for a year, but this is by far the most well-maintained course I have played. Trash cans at almost every hole, brooms at every tee pad to dust off any dirt, grass cut, stumps/benches to sit at while you wait, etc.

3.) Elevation varies throughout the course. Course varies from uphills, downhills, dogleg lefts and rights. Each hole presented itself with a new challenge, but not too difficult where it would deter players from coming back.

4.) Course was easy to navigate, especially since it was my boyfriend's and my first time there. "Next Tee" signs were at every hole. We didn't have to use a map.

5.) Tee pads were concrete, and there were pro tee pads at a majority of the holes.

6.) Baskets were double-chained. Always a bonus in my book!

7.) Designers used the land given extremely well and to its advantage, especially when trees came into play. This is my own opinion, but I also liked how if I shanked a disc into the woods, it was relatively easy to find my disc, and I was able to get out of the brush with some ease. Another thing I liked about the design was that you were able to see or at least know when the hole was open for you to play at most of them (if this makes any sense).

8.) A putting basket was placed before you entered the course.

Cons:

1.) Signage only had hole number, an arrow pointing to what direction the basket was, and how many feet away you are. Although the course was so well-maintained that you could guess where the basket was, it would have been nice to have a simple guide so you knew where you were throwing. In addition, I would have also liked to know the par number for my own reference. This was the only thing that stopped it from getting a five in my book.

2.) Terrain was about the same throughout the entire course. Course description says that half the holes were open and half were wooded. I would have to disagree with that. I think that the entire course was wooded in some form or another. I don't think there were really any "open" holes. This isn't necessarily a con in my book; I do enjoy wooded holes. However, I was given the impression that half were actually open.

Got to play here for the first time. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 2, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

• Fantastic use of Uphill and Downhill landscapes
• Very well maintained
• Rough/Brush is very tolerable
• You get a good workout from the hiking
• Trash / benches / brooms at most holes

Cons:

• $9 a car for non-resisdents, make sure you car pool!
• Wish it had 3 tee pads like Independence.
• No dogs here!
• No holes to bomb a disc.

Other Thoughts:

My first trip to Rolling Hills made me wish I had stopped by sooner, what a great course!

This is the best place to practice uphill and downhill shots, and even then it has great variety.

Rolling Hills 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 28, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

Was easy to find each hole and was relatively clean. It has a variety of shots, some up hills, some down hills, some short windows for different lines, some long, and some short holes. The wildlife adds a great amount of character to this wonderful course.

Cons:

It was muddy and some of the holes had very steep hills.

Other Thoughts:

I would definitely recommend playing this course to anyone in the area.

Tons of Fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 13, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

*concrete tees
*hole # and distance on tee signs
*multiple holes with multiple tees
*brooms on all the tees
*exceptionally well maintained
*trash cans on every hole emptied often during high traffic
*holes with long tees offer significantly more challenge and on a couple more elevation
*SUPERB use of elevation all over course
*very scenic wooded and open holes
*great hole variety
*signs for the next tee pad on any hole where its not obvious
*picnic tables and benches on the course
*indoor bathrooms
*on-site water park

Cons:

*thorny in spots
*pay to enter park
*additional fee for water park
*even a crude hole map on the tee sign is better than none and this spectacular course deserves them

Other Thoughts:

This course is so much fun I am so glad I've been fortunate enough to live near it since I began discing and had so many chances to play it. If you already have a year parking pass for Independence Lake then you can also play Rolling Hills for free, and seeing as being a pay to play course is just about the only thing besides adding hole maps on the tee signs they would need to change to get a 5 rating from me, you people should play this course ASAP. The day passes are also interchangeable with the ones from Independence lake on that day so if you have some time and just the day pass then playing both is fun and you only pay once.

Ypsi's Disc Golf Claim to Fame 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 24, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Challenging. A lot of technical shots. Long tees often have very tight windows to start with, most all have interesting lines on them necessary to avoid trees.
-Scenic. Woods, flowers, nice mowed fairways, and more hills than most of the area.
-Well maintained. Not much trash, and trashcans everywhere. Good seating on course.
-Good signs, tees, and baskets. Distances everywhere, multiple tees on most holes. Most everywhere it's clear where to go. Easy to skip from hole 9 to 16, though.
-Elevation. It's there, and it's well used. Hills to chuck your discs off, and brutal uphill shots, one into a mess of trees.
-Clubhouse on site to fill up water and use bathrooms.
-Good flow. Every hole follows naturally, and course arranged to be playable as shorter rounds if pressed for time.
-Break out every shot in your bag, you'll need it for the million different ways to get in trouble.
-Roughs not too bad, most places lack serious thorns, poison ivy and growth. Not everywhere, though.
-Hole 15. Its just awesome. Off the top of a huge hill needing to go around trees at all kinds of angles.

Cons:

-Prone to muddiness after it rains, watch your foot faults or you may skid in mud pits off the front end of teepads.
-Expensive for non-county residents. Well worth my $20 yearly pass, but $9 parking for non-Washtenaw residents. Still worth your money, but may price out some younger enthusiasts.
-Gets a little mosquito infested during that time of the year, but better than a lot of local courses during the troubled times. Bearable without bugspray at twilight, if you like slapping.
-A workout. More effort than you may like for your round, due to the hills and high probablility of hitting trees.
-Closes at sunset, so no night golf.
-No water hazards.
-Easy to skip holes at one point. Pay attention to basket numbers.
-Might be frustrating to newbies, a lot of opportunities to hit 10 trees in a single hole.

Other Thoughts:

I am so glad I live near this course.
It was closed for some time this year to put in roundabouts, I guess to better handle the water park traffic. I missed it so much, it was like a girlfriend studying abroad for a semester. And it was only 6 weeks.

Anyway, this course has everything but mercy. Washtenaw County has a lot of good courses to play, but this is definitely in our top tier and not to be missed on a trip to this area.

Unique and Technical Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 25, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course contains a great mix of shots on a very well maintained course in Ypsilanti. The majority of shots off the tee are straight or lean right which may be a advantage to lefties or right-handed forehands. Hilly terrain is both very welcome and fairly unique in this part of Michigan. The water park nearby is a great place to chill out after a round. (extra cost)

Cons:

Most of these cons are par for the course as they say in Michigan's outdoors. Bugs and poison ivy abound. The rough is very rough. Losing and/or finding discs should be expected on a typical round. Errant throws will be punished. There are a couple of dicey navigational moments for new players, but locals are generally helpful...and abundant. This course can be crowded during peak hours or league play. You play for free but admission to the park isn't free, but a yearly is only $20 and gets you into Independence Lakes courses as well. As a general warning, dogs are no longer allowed on the course.

Other Thoughts:

This course is a perfect compliment to Ypsilanti's other great course across town at Lakeshore. Play them both in a day and you'll get to throw every disc in your bag.

This Course is a GEM! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 14, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

18 Unique Holes. Concrete Tees. Pro and Am Tees on a lot of the holes. Clean and well kept. Friendly players. Mix of both wooded and non-wooded shots. Cool elevation shots. Cool blind drives.

Cons:

The signs for the next holes could be a little nicer. Not bad or hard to follow they just don't do the course justice. Price is a rip if you are going to play by yourself but with a few friends seems more than fair! There is no real concession stand. You have to pay a seperate fee to get into the waterpark if you want access to a concession stand.

Other Thoughts:

This course was an 1 1/4 hour drive for me and was WELL WORTH THE DRIVE! This is a course you will want to arrive early at. Play a round and then enjoy the waterpark. Go back and play another round. The park is very nice. Bring something to drink and something for lunch. Not much in the way of eating near by. I would recommend this course to anyone wanting a break from HudsonMills.

Great course with surprising amount of hills 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 23, 2008 Played the course:never

Pros:

Course itself is 18 holes, most very fun. Surprising amount of steep hills for southeast Michigan - you'll be throwing uphill and downhill at times. Course includes warm-up hole and nice clubhouse with bathroom.

Everything is well-marked - if you are ever confused, look for a 4x4 post near the basket - it usually has an arrow to the next hole. Tees are in great shape, and clear about distances and directions. Everything's in great shape - no vandalism.

The holes are really fun. There's a great mix of wide open blasts with a lot of precision throws through tunnels of trees.

No water holes, and very little swampiness.

Cons:

There's a $4 car fee, but most of the times I've come no one has been in the guard house, so it's been free.

A couple of holes are blind, so unless you've played the course before, it's hard to know where to throw.

Other Thoughts:

Start at the far end of the parking lot - away from the clubhouse.

Bring bug spray.
