Good Spot 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 12, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good variety of shots in and out of the woods. The wooded shots have fairly easy openings. Oklahoma Joes is right down the road, so that is always a plus.

Cons:

Very worn, slightly trashy. Was a windy day, but alot of liter about. Wasn't always easy to find where the pin was, due to multiple locations per hole, and not very well marked.

Other Thoughts:

All and all is a godo course and a good. Grab some Joes between the Down Under and the Top, and your good to go.

I Love Rosedale 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 9, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Hole 3: Fun tunnel shot through the woods. Great for right handed golfers with one of the hole placement.

Hole 5: Another fun tunnel shot. The elevation change is fun to throw low on. There's a nice drop off after about 50 feet.

Hole 7: If you want to practice your distance, this hole is the one for you. At the long basket, this is a perfect driving hole for the average player.

Hole 10: This is a fun hole to play with right handed anhyzer shots. Fun to play with those understable discs (there's never too much wind down there either - lots of protection by the trees)

Hole 13: Good elevation change. Easy to overdrive the hole.

Hole 14: If you have an overstable fairway driver, excellent opportunity to practice.

Cons:

Hole 9: The island landing is fun to mess with, but why one pin is par 4 and the pin 30 feet in front of it is a par 3, i have no idea...

Hole 13: Open, not many trees.

Other Thoughts:

This is a great course. It's very playable for the average dolfer. There's a few birdie opportunities too. There's plenty of wooded areas that aren't too difficult to play through also. If you're in the area, you gotta play this course.

great place for a quick 9 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 12, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Tons of different shots/hole types.
-Easy to follow no confusion on hole placement or tee pads.
-Tees and baskets are in good condition.
-Shaded most of the course so it was no problem playing in 100+temps.
-Lots of benches and trash cans.
-Multi-basket locations

Cons:

-For how many well placed trash cans there are it was kinda trashy.
-Some holes placements are just a tad far fetched for some par 3s but far from impossible.

Other Thoughts:

Overall I really liked this course and I love the fact that there is a bottom 18 course just down the hill. It's a great location to meet people from anywhere in kc and would be a great park to play all 36 holes and have a vast variety of land holes and shot types. Great course for beginners and pros alike.

Good mix of holes 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 8, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Tons of alternate hole locations keeps it fresh and fun every time. Every hole has at least three positions, and many have five (hole 8 has 7) 10/10

There is a great variety of openness on shots. Some holes have tight drives, some tight approaches, some of both, only a couple that are pretty open the whole way, but those are nice for a breather. For example, drive on the first hole is pretty open, but the approach is into a treed region and is very technical. 10/10

Baskets are in great condition and tees are concrete and also in great condition. 10/10

Navigation between holes is pretty easy. A couple of exceptions are after the ninth hole (look for the staircase down the slope to the right) and also the 18 tee looks like it could be the 13 tee (13 is across the road to the right), but nothing too difficult. 9/10

The course is pretty well manicured most of the time. There are visible, regularly mowed fairways that help with navigation, but the rough isn't too deep or uncomfortable. There are lots of benches and several trash cans that help with litter. 9/10

Tee signs with maps on every hole that show distances and all of the various hole positions help with navigation of the actual holes. Several holes are blind, but the maps and fairways make it pretty easy most of the time. 8/10

Obstacles are used very well and help make up for the lack of more than mild elevation on the first 12 holes. 9/10

Not too difficult for more advanced beginners. You probably don't want to play this course if you're occaisionally a wild thrower because of the dropoffs mentioned in the cons. Overall though the course does a good job of challenging many skill levels, longer hole positions can challenge more advanced players, while shorter positions can be exciting for beginners. 7/10

There is good variety in the distance. However, longer holes tend to be more open while shorter holes are more technical or require more shot shaping. The difference in numerical lengths is there, but not as much in how long the holes feel. There are some holes that are exceptions to this for sure (5 immediately comes to mind as a short hole, while 8 can be a monster with either of the back 2 positions). It could definitely be better, but it's still pretty good. 7/10

There isn't a ton of severe elevation present, there is definitely more of it in play on the back nine, while the front nine is pretty flat. The elevation is still used well even at spots where there isn't a ton. How flat it is isn't really noticeable while playing, even after playing it about eight times I never really noticed until I thought about it for this review. 5/10

Cons:

Most holes are pretty simple and straightforward, and there aren't very many different ways to play them. 3/10

Discs can be pretty easy to lose. There are lots of steep dropoffs if you venture very far off the fairways, and getting down to them can be dangerous and nearly impossible. 3/10

Not a huge variety in distance. Longer holes tend to be more open while shorter holes are more technical or require more shot shaping. The difference in numerical lengths is there, but not in how long the holes feel. There are some holes that are exceptions for sure (5 immediately comes to mind as a short hole, while 8 can be a monster with either of the back 2 positions), but overall 4/10

Some hole positions demand different shot paths (5, 6, 10, 12 favor left to right, 13 favors right to left), but the course is below average in this area overall. 4/10

Other Thoughts:

Overall difficulty 6/10

Often appears more crowded than it is since there is another 18 hole course on site.

Be sure to bring solid footwear, the course is rocky in places.

Recreationally fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 25, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Teesigns present, teepads are large, navigation relatively simple, benches a plus, colored poles help with hole distances. good mix of shots left to right, right to left.

Cons:

A couple of holes have 8-10 different placements fine, but makes it awefully hard to figure out where to go, maybe spend extra money on some alt teepads. that makes every pin placement x2.

Other Thoughts:

The course is well played and having a down under in the same park bonus. Also, DD has moved their store in just up the road so if you lose a disc stop by. Also right next to DD is the best BBQ in the nation so Easy to make a good day out of rosedale

Great place for a good round 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 22, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

I played this course in 102-degree heat and came away happy. (Three bottles of water helped, but still.)

Lots of variety here, with long bombs, shorter technical shots, uphills, downhills, valleys, blind shots over crestlines, and so forth. The grass is groomed and the fairways clean. Multiple pin placements on every hole, benches to rest on, lots of safe parking, centrally located in the KC metro - not surprising that this place has been popular for so long.

For hot-weather play, there's also a water spigot after #5 (I think), which is a definite plus.

I played with two local groups and found everyone friendly and willing to show a traveler how to play the course.

Cons:

There are a few holes near the beginning of this course where the fairway consists of rough rock. This forces air shots and rewards rollers and worm-burners with pretty severe disc damage. Not much that can be done about it but it's certainly less than optimum.

There's also a couple of places where fairways are close together. This is not an issue if you can direct your shots accurately but hey, not everyone's Ken Climo. #18 also runs closely parallel to a major street and if your shot gets into the right-side rough, it'll likely roll down to asphalt (mine did and got hit by a car).

Other Thoughts:

Overall I'd say this course was close to the ultimate in recreational disc golf. Not so challenging as to require a commitment to play, definitely not a pitch-and-putt practice course. I'll be back.

Rosey Rosedale 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 29, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Rosedale has a very good mix of open and wooded holes. Some that can be done in two, or even aced, and some that border on needing a par 4 rating. It is well worn, well laid out, well marked. Some of the elevation changes can be trickier than they look. Cement tee pads are in good shape, and the park is well maintained.

Cons:

There are a couple of long walks between holes, and a couple of others where an errant toss can whack the party in front of you.

Old school, but still a lot of fun 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 3, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Good mixed skill course with multiple pin positions that make this course very adaptable from pitch and putt to championship caliber. Pin position changes (up to 8 on some holes) offers great variety. Shorter pin positions are good for beginner and intermediate players. Longer ones are good for more advanced players. Good signage. Even better sister course in the wooded bottoms.

Cons:

A bit run down due to its age. Inconsistent maintenance can mean looking for discs in plain ol' grass if you come here at the wrong part of the mowing cycle. Big, crowds, (being centrally located and rec friendly, this is easily the most crowded course in the KC metro). Get here before 10 AM on a weekday if you want to play. Hole 18 can be very dangerous. I see short pin setups here more than I would like when I visit. Orientation can be a bit confusing for first timers. No multiple tees, so you're kind of stuck with whatever layout is offered.

Other Thoughts:

Rosedale is your general 1980's era park golf. The park has a wooded perimeter with a mostly open center. Given Rosedale's age and spotty maintenance, this course has kept up well with the times, as its popularity with local players shows. Not the best in town, but you can park here and play two courses. Easily accessible from I-35.

Beginner/Intermediate 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 29, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Course is set around the outside of a large multi-use park, which includes a skate park and some tennis courts. The holes are well separated from this, so there shouldn't be any interference except by #18.
- Majority of the course is more or less in the open, with larger mature trees or bits of forest to make things interesting. There are obvious lines that need to be hit, like hyzers or anhyzers to get around the woods, and a few windows like on #10 and #15. A lot of baskets are located within trees or woods, to add challenge to an otherwise open shot.
-With at least four different pin positions on every hole, the course can play very differently from round to round. #9 especially, which can be an easy 290' shot or a tough 520' hole with a huge bush to get around, and then a pinch point to a downhill approach. #7 can be a nice easy shot in the shorts, or a big-risk island shot that needs big D to reach. Great variety overall.
- Some parts of the course are pretty hilly, with the steepest parts by #13-#17. The more open terrain has the most elevation changes, but a lot of holes have some sort of slope. #10 is a shorter downhill shot that has punishment for going too far, and the area right of #15's fairway is a wooded hill. Others play uphill to add more difficulty, like #6 or #11.
- Road O.B. by a few basket placements definitely adds more challenge, like #12 and #17, and the island on #7 of course, and the road on/next to #14.
- Nice teepads, baskets, and signage. Some baskets have large flags so you know which one to throw to in a few spots, which is nice. Pretty good amenities overall. Navigation is pretty easy, especially with the map in front.

Cons:

- A lot of fairly wide open holes here, with only some forest on the back end, or a few trees in the fairway to worry about. Almost any kind of shot can get you by the basket, so line shaping isn't a huge factor in many spots.
- Layout is a little funky, you have to backtrack down #3's fairway to get to #4's tee? That is a huge bottleneck. A few teepads in precarious spots, like #7, #11, and maybe #15. And while the roads offer some more challenge, it is a pain to be playing while cars cruise by.

Other Thoughts:

- A fun course to let some drives fly, many opportunities to grip it and rip it. Enough trees and woods, or elevation, to keep things interesting, but maybe not exciting. The wooded holes are definitely more enjoyable, though the potential of the island green on #7 and the par-4 placement on #9 are also right up there. Still, after one round you'll probably be a little bored of throwing hyzers, especially those with a bigger arm.
- More experienced players will find some things to like, everyone else should find fun and challenge. Also, a perfect complement to the Down Under course.

Rosedale 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 8, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The most centrally located and busiest course in KC. Offers several dogleg shots and tough approaches with baskets usually surrounded by trees. Plays left, so it forces RHBH players to adjust their game. Easy to meet other players.

Cons:

Dirty and poorly maintained. Busy with regular, slow playing lines. Lots of riff raff getting high at every bench, especially down under. Built on top of a steep rocky bluff, so errant throws are extra punishing and difficult to find.

Other Thoughts:

Although this park is busy, its only due to its location. Its one of the oldest DG parks in KC, but needs a serious overhaul to be family friendly. Worthwhile to play for shot variety and meeting new people.

My new KC favorite 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 12, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

A challenging course for without being discouraging to a fairly new player. Good variety of right & left drives, some wide open & some technical. Played quickly in spite of a lot of groups on the course. Nice terrain changes and some risk/ reward holes with pins near the edge of the bluffs. A lot of trees but the leaves were not too deep to find discs and the grass in the open was not too deep. Benches on the tees and good signs showing fairways and possible pin locations

Cons:

On a couple of holes I had a hard time seeing which basket was in use the basket from the tee, but I'm only 5'6 and the guys in my group who were 6' could see them. a couple of rocky fairways would be pretty hard on cheaper plastic, but I was warned about that & a Champion disc showed no damage.

Other Thoughts:

I have played several KC courses one or two times and Swope several, but Rosedale is my new favorite. I'm looking forward to playing "Down Under" on my next trip!

Model Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Apr 16, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

This is a gorgeous and well maintained course with thoughtful tee and pin locations. The whole course was filled with good variety and shots that made sense and kept the game flowing very naturally. Very clean park too. I felt like I could have used most all of the discs in my bag to properly conquer this one.

Cons:

Some shots were a little too close to the road for comfort and my brother actually lost a disc in the back of a garbage truck that was driving by. It also looked like there might be big crowds most of the time (understandable for such a nice course). I was a little concerned that there seemed to be too many opportunities for kids to play on the fairways and get knocked silly by a driver. The biggest con for this course is that I live 400 miles away ;)

Other Thoughts:

There was a brilliant and honorable feature of this course that I'd like to see everywhere: A drop box where you can return missing/found discs and a local official opens it and calls the numbers or asks people to show up to claim their lost discs on a specific, posted date and time. Cool.

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 24, 2010 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

There are nice concrete teepads, signs and benches at every hole, trashcans are scattered around the course, baskets are all in good shape and are moved frequently. This course has a lot to offer as far as shot variety: fairways ranging from narrow and short, to open bombs and everything in between, some risk/reward situations can make for some interesting lines, some elevation that plays really well, multipe basket locations, some blind shots, a lot of length variety without having anything too short or overwhelmingly long.
There are also some benches and a practice basket by the start of the course. Often times, there will be someone selling used discs here for cheap.

Cons:

Can be extremely crowded, especially on the weekends. The grass isn't consistently mowed, so sometimes it can be long but I have rarely had any problem finding any discs in the open. If you have problems keeping it on the fairway, you might end up in some serious trouble or lose a disc.

Other Thoughts:

This park offers two of the best courses in the area. Two dramatically different courses, great in thier own way. Another favorite in the area is Waterworks. If there was a "must play" list for the KC area, Rosedale and Waterworks would be right at the top.
Down the street there is a gas station with a decent disc selection and Oklahoma Joes BBQ, my personal favorite.

Love the mult. pin placements 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 16, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

A nice park course situated in Kansas City, KS. This course offers a nice mix of open and technical shots with good variations of distances throughout. There is a lot of different pin placements, which I thought added a lot to the course, because with the 6 or so layouts available there are new challenges and changes every time you play the course. The course also offers a good mix of elevation shots throughout. The tee signs a well marked and have nice concrete tee pads. The course flows well throughout the park which makes it easy to navigate the park. The park also offers a bottom, more technical course, which is another bonus. There is a variety of shots required to play this course which add to the overall challenge of the course.

Cons:

There are a few flaws with this course. The course was a fun course, but challenge wise was only about a 3.5/5. This course also was lacking the wow factor to put it above other courses. The course was also rather boring with design and beauty.

Other Thoughts:

Overall this was a fun course that I would recommend if you are in the Kansas City area after Water Works. This course has some challenge and is very fun to play, but many of the locals were rude and disrespectful of the course which is a big negative in my book. The multiple pin placements really add to the course and make it stand out in my book, because you are basically getting more than one course with different difficulties.

Better Course Down Below... 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 19, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is located in a hilly park of south-western KC. Plenty of changes in elevation here. Lots of uphill/downhill shots. Excellent variation in shots here. Left to Right/Right to Left and even straight shots are here. Good mix of open/wooded here, but not as many wooded holes as I would have liked. Good variation of distances and there weren't very many "should have been par 2" holes. Tee signs were in good shape. Tee pads were the biggest I've ever seen! Benches and trash cans at most tees. Baskets were in good shape and had flags on the top of them which made them easy to see from the tee.

Cons:

Grass really needed to be mowed when I was there. I spent a good half hour looking for discs in the open. Navigation was a little rough. I skipped one hole and spent lots of time looking for the next tee. Not in the best neighborhood. I saw some guys sitting at a table who looked like drug dealers. Some of the fairways with rocks really tore up the cheap discs (DX Pro-D etc.).

Other Thoughts:

Overall this is a nice course. I didn't have a good day when I came. I got a disc stuck in a tree and I wasted tons of time because of navigations issues and looking for discs in the tall grass.

*UPDATE* I decided to up the rating from a 3 to a 4 because I've played a lot of courses that were worse recently and I realized that this isn't that bad of a course.
