Pros:

Cecilville is a town in the middle of some of the most amazing wilderness you could ever imagine. The Salmon River and the surrounding Trinity Wilderness is one of the most beautiful places you will ever see in your life. Getting here is half the fun, or maybe it's not so much fun?? I guess it depends if you are driving or the passenger. Perhaps riding a bicycle here would be the best idea??

The course is located at the saloon in Cecilville, it was closed when we pulled in, but someone from nearby must have known we had arrived in town and came over to check on us. It was kind of odd, like there was a sensor on the road alerting someone that someone had come to Cecilville. Everything was cool even though he was surprised we drove in from "that way" as he had never even gone that way.

Anyway, found the first hole pretty easily and the rest of the course as well. There were some enjoyable holes from what I remember. The first few had a nice feel in the open areas, with some room to bomb and one hole along a nice northern cali stream. A lot of climbing and elevation to the course as you traverse quite a large mountainside. True wilderness feel to some of the course. There are still some holes and areas on the course that really stick out in my mind even 3 years later. I had a great time here. I'd like to come back again when the saloon is open.

Cons:

It's way in the middle of nowhere. The sign as you get to Salmon River Rd says "Ignore your GPS estimated time it will take way longer" They were right. The road is downright scary, amazing and one of the most amazing things I've ever seen, but some might not enjoy this ride in. Only do it in a car or SUV, no trailers or anything like that.

Other Thoughts:

I got word about this course from a friend from high school who lives out on Salmon River Rd. Only 60 people live on this 15+mile road.... We left Arcata and started toward Cecilville. Stopped at this overlook to take in the view and rest the legs. Started talking to this guy on a motorcycle who lived out that way. He was telling us about "how this is where that show Murder Mountain is filmed" And how we we way out in the wilderness of Cali. He told us which way he was going and about how there were all these cool places to check out if we wanted to on the way. We told the way we were headed. He says "I've lived out here my whole life, I've never gone that way".

That was the beginning of the craziest car ride I've been on in my life. Thankfully we never passed a car going the other way as I would not have wanted to figure out who was going to have to back up to a spot where we could pass. There is one rest area along the way on Salmon River Rd and we stopped for a break. We looked across the river and saw a bunch of trails and paths worn in. My friend asked what those were. I replied "Most likely bear trails". 5 seconds later we see a huge bear walking along one of the paths.

We ended up camping nearby, I think you can camp at the course also? But we stayed one of the state park campgrounds in the Trinity Wilderness about 5-10 miles northeast of the course. The second campground past the course is ideal. I couldn't recommend a place to stay more. Take what you need going here. Spend a few days. The Salmon River is one of the few wild rivers left and it's absolutely beautiful and not to be missed. Check it out on youtube to get an idea of what you are in for. I hope to be back.
